ABSTRACT Surface acoustic wave (SAW) magnetic field sensors benefit from small size and low cost, but they are restricted from practical applications by poor sensitivity and limit of detection (LoD). Strong coupling, a stronger form of ferromagnetic resonance, has the potential to overcome these obstacles. While Rayleigh‐SAW exhibits limited magnon‐phonon coupling, shear horizontal (SH) SAW, with more energy concentrated near the surface, is promising to improve the sensing performance. Here, shear horizontal mode‐enhanced magnetic field sensitivity in a strongly coupled magnetoacoustic wave sensor is reported. Fittings of the dispersion anticrossing at different magnetic field directions confirm the achievement of strong coupling and tunability of the coupling regime. The sensor based on the SH mode achieves high frequency sensitivity of 2.13 MHz/Oe and phase sensitivity of 508.71 °/Oe and low LoD of 47 pT/Hz 1/2 @ 10 Hz, all of which are enhanced by an order of magnitude compared to the reported Rayleigh mode sensor. As a proof‐of‐concept, the mapping process in geophysical exploration is simulated, and the practical weak‐magnetic‐field detection capability of the miniaturized sensor is demonstrated. This work provides a new strategy to enhance the magnetic field sensitivity of the SAW sensor and opens up opportunities for practical weak magnetic sensing application scenarios.

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) magnetic sensors offer an attractive platform for weak magnetic field detection, benefiting from compact form factor and wireless operation. However, intrinsic acoustic energy leakage into the substrate fundamentally limits the achievable sensitivity. Here, we present a compact SAW magnetic sensor based on high-order shear horizontal modes to enhance magnetoelastic coupling via acoustic energy confinement. We show that the magnetic-induced phase response is governed by harmonic-dependent acoustic energy confinement within the magnetostrictive layer. The reduced wavelength of higher-order harmonics strengthens acoustic energy confinement, increasing the fraction of acoustic energy participating in magnetoelastic coupling and thereby significantly amplifying the ΔG-induced phase modulation. As a result, the proposed device achieves a superior phase sensitivity of 3486°/mT under seventh-order harmonic excitation, corresponding to an approximately 770-fold enhancement over the fundamental mode, together with a limit of detection of 17 pT/Hz1/2 at 100 Hz. Offset frequency-dependent characterization under AC magnetic field modulation further reveals stable and high-performance detection of low-frequency weak magnetic signals. These results establish acoustic energy confinement as an effective mechanism for enhancing ΔG-based SAW magnetic sensing and provide a viable pathway toward high-density and on-chip integrated weak-field magnetic sensor arrays.

ABSTRACT Excitation of antiferromagnetic dynamics is at the core of ultrafast spintronics. Coherent excitation of antiferromagnetic magnons is typically monochromatic, confined at dispersion intersections between antiferromagnetic magnons and the excitation source. Broadband excitation can be enabled by introducing electron spins in an incoherent manner, albeit accompanied by high energy consumption from Joule heating. Here, we demonstrate a broadband excitation of antiferromagnetic dynamics of 2D antiferromagnet CrSBr without Joule heating, by Rayleigh‐type surface acoustic wave (R‐SAW). Incoherent magnons are efficiently excited via the angular momentum transfer from acoustic phonons, across a wide range up to the spin‐flop field. The collinear alignment between the Néel vector and phonon angular momenta induces strong excitation of magnons with high phonon dissipation, whereas orthogonal alignment suppresses dissipation, as revealed by R‐SAW transmission. Our work uncovers a mutual interplay between phonon transport and antiferromagnetic order parameters, offering a broadband, low‐loss route to manipulate antiferromagnetic dynamics.

Acoustic waves in thin films always suffer from high dispersion, leading to significant sensitivity to film thickness and corresponding device instability in practical applications. The quasi-longitudinal (QL) wave, conventionally classified as a symmetric Lamb wave, is generally considered a low-dispersion plate wave. However, the mechanism responsible for its low dispersion remains underexplored, limiting the excitation and control of QL waves in complex structures beyond simple plates. Here, we show that the QL wave inherits the non-dispersive nature of the longitudinal bulk wave, whereas its dispersion is introduced by coupling with highly dispersive Lamb waves. The coupling strength is governed by their displacement similarity such that reducing their similarity suppresses the coupling-induced dispersion. Based on this mechanism, a surface-wave-like QL wave is excited in an Al/LiNbO3/SiC heterostructure. The similarity between the QL wave and Lamb waves is reduced from 0.57 to 0.16, resulting in extremely weak coupling and a nearly non-dispersive QL wave with a dispersion curve slope of only −2.6 m/s. Acoustic resonators based on this structure show less than 0.8% variation in resonant frequency corresponding to the QL wave when the LiNbO3 thickness varies from 700 to 1100 nm. Our work not only clarifies the fundamental physics of the QL wave and then isolates a nearly non-dispersive QL wave from Lamb waves but also reports a highly robust acoustic resonator that overcomes the notorious sensitivity of resonant frequency to the piezoelectric film thickness.

Abstract Magnetic memory based on spin‐orbit torque (SOT) is a promising candidate for the next‐generation storage devices. Materials that generate out‐of‐plane spin polarization ( σ z ) are highly desired and actively pursued as the SOT generator, due to its ability to achieve field‐free SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization. However, integrating σ z into perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction for efficient data writing is not realized. Here, utilizing σ z from antiferromagnetic spin Hall effect in Mn 2 Au, σ z ‐enabled field‐free SOT switching of perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions is realized demonstrating a magnetic memory with both writing and reading electrically. The tunnel magnetoresistance ratio achieves 66% with a critical current density of 5.6 × 10 6  A cm −2 at room temperature. Such field‐free fully SOT switching is further directly confirmed by domain imaging via magneto‐optical Kerr effect microscopy. In addition to enabling field‐free switching, σ z is proposed to assist ultrafast and more efficient switching of perpendicular magnetization compared with conventional in‐planes ones, based on simulations. This research advances the application of out‐of‐plane SOTs and paves the way for high‐density, high‐speed, and low‐power magnetic memory.

High interfacial transparency is vital to achieve efficient spin-charge conversion for ideal spintronic devices with low energy consumption. However, in traditional ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic heterojunctions, the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling brings about spin memory loss (SML) and two-magnon scattering (TMS), quenching spin current crossing the heterointerfaces. To address the intrinsic deficiency of heterointerface, we design a ferromagnetic FeRh/antiferromagnetic FeRh spin homojunction for efficient spin-charge conversion, verified by a high interfacial transparency of 0.75 and a high spin torque efficiency of 0.34 from spin pumping measurements. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the interfacial electric field of homojunction is two orders of magnitude smaller than that of traditional heterojunction, producing negligible interfacial spin-orbit coupling to drastically reduce SML and TMS. Our spin homojunction exhibits potential and enlightenment for future energy-efficient spintronic devices.

Abstract In conventional ferromagnet/spacer/ferromagnet sandwiches, noncollinear couplings are commonly absent because of the low coupling energy and strong magnetization. For antiferromagnets (AFM), the small net moment can embody a low coupling energy as a sizable coupling field, however, such AFM sandwich structures have been scarcely explored. Here we demonstrate orthogonal interlayer coupling at room temperature in an all-antiferromagnetic junction Fe 2 O 3 /Cr 2 O 3 /Fe 2 O 3 , where the Néel vectors in the top and bottom Fe 2 O 3 layers are strongly orthogonally coupled and the coupling strength is significantly affected by the thickness of the antiferromagnetic Cr 2 O 3 spacer. From the energy and symmetry analysis, the direct coupling via uniform magnetic ordering in Cr 2 O 3 spacer in our junction is excluded. The coupling is proposed to be mediated by the non-uniform domain wall state in the spacer. The strong long-range coupling in an antiferromagnetic junction provides an unexplored approach for designing antiferromagnetic structures and makes it a promising building block for antiferromagnetic devices.

Abstract Negative capacitance effect in ferroelectric materials provides a solution to the energy dissipation problem induced by Boltzmann distribution of electrons in conventional electronics. Here, we discover that besides ferroelectrics, the antiferroelectrics based on Landau switches also have intrinsic negative capacitance effect. We report both the static and transient negative capacitance effect in antiferroelectric PbZrO3 films and reveal its possible physical origin. The capacitance of the capacitor of the PbZrO3 and paraelectric heterostructure is demonstrated to be larger than that of the isolated paraelectric capacitor at room temperature, indicating the existence of the static negative capacitance. The opposite variation trends of the voltage and charge transients in a circuit of the PbZrO3 capacitor in series with an external resistor demonstrate the existence of transient negative capacitance effect. Strikingly, four negative capacitance effects are observed in the antiferroelectric system during one cycle scan of voltage pulses, different from the ferroelectric counterpart with two negative capacitance effects. The polarization vector mapping, electric field and free energy analysis reveal the rich local regions of negative capacitance effect with the negative dP/dE and (δ2G)⁄(δD2), producing stronger negative capacitance effect. The observation of negative capacitance effect in antiferroelectric films significantly extends the range of its potential application and reduces the power dissipation further.
