In the past decade, the early Acheulean before 1 Mya has been a focus of active research. Acheulean lithic assemblages have been shown to extend back to ∼1.75 Mya, and considerable advances in core reduction technologies are seen by 1.5 to 1.4 Mya. Here we report a bifacially flaked bone fragment (maximum dimension ∼13 cm) of a hippopotamus femur from the ∼1.4 Mya sediments of the Konso Formation in southern Ethiopia. The large number of flake scars and their distribution pattern, together with the high frequency of cone fractures, indicate anthropogenic flaking into handaxe-like form. Use-wear analyses show quasi-continuous alternate microflake scars, wear polish, edge rounding, and striae patches along an ∼5-cm-long edge toward the handaxe tip. The striae run predominantly oblique to the edge, with some perpendicular, on both the cortical and inner faces. The combined evidence is consistent with the use of this bone artifact in longitudinal motions, such as in cutting and/or sawing. This bone handaxe is the oldest known extensively flaked example from the Early Pleistocene. Despite scarcity of well-shaped bone tools, its presence at Konso shows that sophisticated flaking was practiced by ∼1.4 Mya, not only on a range of lithic materials, but also occasionally on bone, thus expanding the documented technological repertoire of African Early Pleistocene<italic>Homo</italic>.

本研究は、旧人は絶滅したのに対し、新人ホモ・サピエンスだけが人口増を果たした要因が、投槍器や弓矢を使った新しい投射技術の開発による効率的な食料獲得の実現にあったと仮定し、この仮説を狩猟用石器の実験考古学的分析、対象獣の動物考古学分析、遺跡年代値の解析により、複合的に検証することを目的とする。本年度は、COVID-19により、当初予定していたイタリアにおける初期ホモ・サピエンス遺跡とネアンデルタール人遺跡の資料調査を遂行することができなかった。そこで、既に入手した遺跡出土資料のデータ整理と解析、実験試料のデータ整理と解析を進めた。特に、イタリアの後期旧石器時代最初のホモ・サピエンス文化であるウルッツィアン（4万5000～4万2000年前）の遺跡を対象に、デジタルマイクロスコープで得られた衝撃痕跡を解析し、実験試料と比較分析した。また、シエナ大学の動物考古学を専門とする研究者と連携し、初期ホモ・サピエンスやネアンデルタール人遺跡から出土した動物化石の分析を進めた。上記の分析により、今後実行予定である他のホモ・サピエンス遺跡出土資料やネアンデルタール人遺跡出土資料と比較検討するための基礎データを構築することができた。また、初期ホモ・サピエンスやネアンデルタール人遺跡から出土した動物化石の分析により、ネアンデルタール段階とホモ・サピエンス段階の対象獣の違いについて検討するための基礎データを構築することができた。

本研究は、人類が過去100万年間以上にわたって製作してきたハンドアックスの三次元形態解析により、ハンドアックスの刃が直線かつ鋭利になり、形態の三次元的対称性が高まっていく過程を定量的データで証明する。更に、ハンドアックスの使用痕分析により、刃部の直線・鋭利化と形態の三次元的対称性の高まりが、ハンドアックスの機能変化と関連する可能性を探る。これより、原人から旧人への進化段階における、石器製作の技術発達過程を定量的に明らかにし、その背景にある認知能力の発達を理解するための基礎データを構築する。初年度である平成30年度は、有効な三次元解析の開発に努めた。本研究では、ハンドアックスの刃の直線度、形態の三次元的対称性を定量的に評価するため、ハンディー3Dスキャナで石器の三次元形態データを取得し、取得した三次元データを三次元解析ソフトで解析する。最初に、実験サンプルにより、大きく鋭利な刃を持つハンドアックスを、ハンディー3Dスキャナで正確にスキャンする方法を確認した。次いで、エチオピア・コンソ遺跡群で回収された175～80万年前のハンドアックスを三次元スキャンした。平成30年度は、様々な年代の資料をスキャンし、形態的変位の中で刃部の直線度と三次元的対称性を最も有効に評価するための分析手法を確認した。これにより、次年度におこなう分析手法が固まった。また、東アフリカにおける原人から旧人段階の人類への移行のコンテクスト情報について分析を進め、石器の発達段階との関わりを検討した。

Standard patterns of lithic use-wear formation were re-investigated and identification criteria for microwear traces were published in English. Experimental data bases of microflaking scar patterns and micro-polish images were scrutinized for global cross cultural methodology of functional determination of stone tool use. Accumulated results of experimental use-wear data by the TUMRT (Tohoku University Microwear Research Team) were compiled and publicized. In order to evaluate lithic use-wear patterns in conjunction with site structure analysis, excavations of the Upper Paleolithic sites in Yamagata Prefecture were conducted.

The Chorora Formation research resulted in the discovery of new mammalian fossil assemblages spanning 9 to 7 Ma, including fossils of a large bodied ape, supporting an African origin of the human and African great ape clade. The Konso Formation research clarified the emergence, subsequent development, and paleoenvironmental contexts of the Acheulean technological complex from 1.75 Ma through 0.85 Ma. Comparative analysis of Ardipithecus ramidus and related fossils included a new estimate of canine sexual dimorphism and key morphofunctional evaluations of the hand and foot. Results confirmed a lack of knuckle-walking related features in the Ar. ramidus midcarpal and metacarpal articulations. Analyses of foot bones supported the hypothesis of Australopithecus terrestrial adaptation.

This project resulted in construction of a global-scale database (NeanderDB), which documents more than 3200 Middle and Upper Paleolithic excavated sites across Africa and Eurasia dated to between 200 and 20 kya. A critical evaluation of the spatio-temporal contexts of the compiled data revealed regionally varied replacement and assimilation processes of the two populations, suggesting their possible co-existence and cultural interaction. The study also investigated potential differences in learning behaviors of the two populations in an effort to test the “learning hypothesis”. The results show that it is too simplistic to postulate innate cognitive differences as the single force accounting for replacement of the Neanderthals. The “learning hypothesis” proposed in 2009 now needs to be updated, taking into consideration non-innate social issues, including the population size and social organization, as important factors affecting learning behavior in the two population groups.

This study attempts to reconstruct hunting evolution in East Asia and to confirm a relationship between the hunting methods and the formation patterns of impact fractures as well as microscopic linear impact traces (MLIT)based on projectile experiments. The projectile experiments show that the frequency of the impact fractures as well as MLITs, the dimension of the impact fractures, and the ratio of the specimens remained are strongly related with the impact velocities. All the results demonstrate that there are correlations between the formation patterns of impact fractures as well as MLITs and the impact velocities, which provide us with an opportunity for identifying the hunting methods employed.
