    The radiative-decay probability of the Hoyle state is actually controversial because new data which contradicts the currently adopted value has been recently reported. In this work, we performed the new reliable measurement of the radiative-decay probability of the Hoyle state. We successfully obtained 40 triplecoincidence events of scattered α particles, recoil 12C, and emitted γ rays for the first time. Further analysis will determine the radiative-decay probability, and puzzle over the radiative-decay probability.

    Abstract Photonuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $$A=60$$ are planned to be studied experimentally and theoretically with the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual photon excitation by proton scattering and real photo absorption by a high-brilliance $$\gamma $$-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photoabsorption cross sections and decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field and beyond-mean-field models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photonuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated based on the discrepancies between the model predictions and experimental data. The data and predictions will be implemented in the general reaction calculation code, . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

    Several (α, p) reactions with radioactive-ions (RI) in the αp-process are important to characterize X-ray bursts. However, some of them do not have sufficient experimental data, and the 26Si(α, p)29P reaction is one of such reactions. We performed a direct measurement of the reaction in inverse kinematics with a thick target at the CNS RI beam separator (CRIB).We used a multiplexer circuit, Mesytec MUX, to acquire data from many channels of silicon detectors. In this experimental setup, a resonant elastic scattering was measured simultaneously. The details of the experimental conditions and the preliminary results of the analysis are discussed.

    The reaction rate of the triple-alpha reaction can be enhanced in hot and dense environments due to the deexcitation of the Hoyle state in 12C by neutrons. The cross section of the deexcitation should be determined for the enhanced reaction rate. We plan to obtain the cross section by measuring the inverse reaction using a neutron beam around 10 MeV and an active target system. In the present paper, we report a proof-of-principle experiment using a neutron beam at 14 MeV. The obtained cross section is consistent with a previous result, demonstrating the validity of our method.

    I have designed a new experiment with a new gas target and waveform analysis method for the silicon detector in order to search for the alpha condensed state in 20Ne nucleus. The experimental condition such as the method of the waveform analysis was examined, and most proper condition was determined. Based on this experimental condition, the proposal of a new experiment for 20Ne was submitted to the experimental facility and approved with a high-grade evaluation. In addition, I analyzed the experimental data obtained by the previous experiment, and proposed candidates for the alpha condensed state in 20Ne for the first time in the world. These results are very important both from the experimental and theoretical sides to study the nature of low-density nuclear matter.

    An active target system with a micro pixel chamber was developed and a performance test was carried out using an accelerated beam. Three-dimensional trajectories of incident, scattered and recoil particles in the 4He + 4He elasctic scattering were successfully measured. The first measurement using a radioactive beam will be done in FY2015 to clarify cluster correlations in neutron-rich nuclei.

    New experimental information on the generalized nuclear force with strangeness degrees of freedom can be obtained by investigating the structure of hypernuclei, nuclei with strangeness. In this research, we extract spectroscopic information on Ξ hypernuclei which have not been observed. A new magnetic spectrometersystem has been constructed and the good performance of the spectrometer has been confirmed.
