<title>Abstract</title>Hydrocarbon chemistry in the C–O–H system at high pressure and high temperature is important for modelling the internal structure and evolution of giant icy planets, such as Uranus and Neptune, as their interiors are thought to be mainly composed of water and methane. In particular, the formation of diamond from the simplest hydrocarbon, i.e., methane, under the internal conditions of these planets has been discussed for nearly 40 years. Here, we demonstrate the formation of diamond from methane hydrate up to 3800 K and 45 GPa using a CO2 laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy observations. The results show that the process of dissociation and polymerisation of methane molecules to produce heavier hydrocarbons while releasing hydrogen to ultimately form diamond proceeds at milder temperatures (~ 1600 K) and pressures (13–45 GPa) in the C–O–H system than in the C–H system due to the influence of water. Our findings suggest that diamond formation can also occur in the upper parts of the icy mantles of giant icy planets.

Tungsten (W) is a principal candidate as target material because of its high density and extremely high melting point. W inherently has a critical disadvantage of its brittleness at around room temperature (low temperature brittleness), recrystallization embrittlement, and irradiation embrittlement. TFGR (Toughened, Fine Grained, Recrystallized) W-1.1%TiC has been considered as a realized solution to the embrittlement problems. We started to fabricate TFGR W-1.1%TiC in 2016 under collaboration between KEK and Metal Technology Co. LTD (MTC). The TFGR W-1.1%TiC samples were successfully fabricated in June, 2018. As a result, the specimen showed slight bend ductility and 2.6 GPa of fracture strength.

Phase relations in the system MgSiO3-FeSiO3 were investigated using Kawai-type multianvil apparatus with sintered diamond anvils up to 64 GPa and 2300 K.Bridgmanite coexists with stishovite and magnesiow&uuml;stite for the (Mg0.4Fe0.6)SiO3 starting material in the pressure regions applied in this study. We found that the solubility of FeSiO3 in bridgmanite increases almost linearly with increasing pressure from 20 mol% for 27 GPa to 38 mol% for 60 GPa at 2000 K.

We observe the microstructures of slickenside of faulted cherts that are composed of Jurassic and Jurassic-Cretaceous accretionary complexes, in order to clarify generation mechanism of slickenside. Our results are 1) The trigger of faulting in chert blocks is generation of weak plane created by pressure solution. 2) Slickenside is an amorphous thin layer with 50 nm &ndash; 100 nm in width, which is composed of very tiny grains with less than 50 nm in size. These grains are amorphous materials mainly with quartz composition.

High pressure and temperature experiments of Mg2SiO4-H2 and MgSiO3-H2 samples have been carried out to clarify effect of H2 fluid on phase relation in MgO-SiO2-H2 samples and to characterize silicate composition dissolved in H2 fluids from 2.5 GPa, 1400 K to 15.0 GPa, 1600K using laser heated diamond anvil cells. The phase relations was clarified by X-ray diffraction measurements, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopic and transmission electron microscopic observation indicated that forsterite and enstatite was decomposed in Mg2SiO4-H2 and MgSiO3-H2 samples, respectively. These phase were dissolute into H2 fluid incongruently.

The 3D packing structures of the microcrystals in framboidal pyrite have been studied through morphological examinations and crystallographic orientation analysis to understand the self-organization process. The structures are divided into (i) face-centered cubic, (ii) icosahedral and (iii) random packings. The detailed crystallography of pyrite framboids is characterized by high-angle (∼90°) misorientations shown by about a half of the microcrystals in a framboid. This means that the crystallographic orientation of microcrystals is not uniform even in highly ordered framboids, suggesting that their self-organization process is not crystallographically controlled, but occurs by the physical rotation of individual microcrystals.

Spin state of Fe3+ in Al-bearing post-Mg-perovskite was measured by X-ray emission spectroscopy by reducing pressure from 165 to 35 GPa at room temperature. The result indicates that Fe3+ is low spin from 165 to around 95 GPa and it becomes almost high spin from around 95 to 35 GPa. This indicates that most Fe3+ in Al-bearing post-Mg-perovskite in the lower mantle would be in the low spin state.

Laser-cut surfaces of single and polycrystalline diamonds were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The laser-processed grooves are filled with debris materials composed of textually different types of layered carbons: (i) highly oriented, highly crystalline graphite layer, (ii) oriented microcrystalline graphite layer, and (iii) non-oriented nanocrystalline graphite layer, from the basal (unaltered) diamond surface to the center of the grooves. The observation suggests that the pulsed-laser ablation of diamonds occurs via two-step process: (1) graphitization of laser-irradiated diamond surface, followed by (2) sublimation and oxidation of carbon materials.

Elastic wave velocities of grossular garnet were determined up to 16.4 GPa and 1650 K in conjunction with in situ synchrotron X-ray measurement. We obtained marked increase in elastic wave velocities after heating to 1000 ˚C above ~10 GPa. The elastic wave velocities after heating to 1000 ˚C are ∼1-1.5 % higher than those of original grossular sample, which are comparable to previously reported elastic wave velocities of grossular. In contrast, we observed no change in X-ray diffraction patterns collected in situation, and need further detailed investigation for clarifying the cause of the marked increase in elastic wave velocities.

Advanced Pore-Free SiC (APF-SiC) with super-high strength is expected to be used as engineering structural materials since it has damage tolerance ability by preceding failure of metallic silicon particles In the present study, thermal shock tests of this material were carried out to characterize the fracture behavior. The residual strength after thermal shock was also measured. It is found that the critical temperature difference ΔT_c of this material is larger than that of conventional SiC due to smaller size of pre-existing flaws. As the result, the validity of the Griffith's theory was experimentally confirmed. In addition, the damage tolerance behavior in thermal-shocked materials is not observed because the metallic silicon particles may he failed by thermal shock.

Icosahedral architecture is extremely rare in natural materials and prohibited in minerals (bulk crystals) because it involves fivefold axes which are not compatible with translation symmetry. Here, we review an interesting icosahedral domain structure found recently in natural pyrite framboids, which are microscopic spheroidal aggregates of equant, equidimensional pyrite microcrystals and are ubiquitous in a variety of geological environments. The icosahedral structure in framboids consists of twenty tetrahedral subunits in which the internal microcrystals are regularly arranged in a cubic close packing and essentially involves fivefold and threefold microcrystal distributions on the sections. This is the only close packed icosahedral assembly of micrometric particles found in the natural world. Similar icosahedral structure based on the poly-tetrahedral construction can be observed in some synthetic nanoparticles (nanoclusters) such as multiple twinned particles of Au, Pd, etc. and chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamonds. However, there are large differences between these icosahedral nanoparticles and framboids in terms of the attributes of the constituent particles. For example, the former exist at atomic dimensions, whereas the latter are composed of single crystals which are 10^4 times larger than atoms. Therefore, investigating such a micrometer scale icosahedral self-assembly might play an important role in understanding the physical state and behavior of small particles from nanometer to micrometer scales and, potentially, also to macro scale structure.

We firstly reported synthesis of pure polycrystalline diamond via direct conversion of graphite at high pressure using multianvil apparatus, which was found to be made of peculiar nano-textures and have extraordinarily high hardness. We have been working to synthesize larger bodies of NPD for its industrial and scientific applications. In this talk, I will review some physical properties of NPD and current status of its application to various high-pressure apparatus.

In situ X-ray diffraction experiments of phase D have been conducted to confirm its stability and compression behavior under the lower mantle conditions by using a combination of multianvil apparatus and synchrotron radiation. Sintered diamond anvils were used to achieve pressures up to 46 GPa and temperature up to 1300 K. High temperature EOS for phase D was derived from obtained X-ray diffraction patterns.

Advanced Pore-Free SiC (APF-SiC) with super-high strength is developed by reaction sintering method improved newly. Authors had constructed a peculiar fracture mechanism model of this material differing from the fracture mechanism of usual ceramics. The fracture mechanism is that fracture occur at cluster crack (one of the formed some clusters). This fracture is called cluster fracture. In this study, to clarify adequacy of this model, clusters were researched in detail by using mapping analysis and observing some clusters. Crack growth behavior is researched by using AE censer. As the results, it is clarified that some clusters are formed by aggregate of un-reacted substance and the cluster fracture doesn&#039;t occur due to growth of cluster crack. In the case of 4-point bending tests is carried out at low loading rate, nonlinear behavior appeared on stress-strain curve before failure. In addition, bending strength increased with decreasing loading rate. On the basis of these results, fracture mechanism is considered as follows. Some clusters are formed by aggregate of un-reacted substance at near rupture. Cluster fracture occurs at the same time with cluster crack being one of the formed some clusters are formed. Therefore increasing strength is because to forms cluster crack stops by internal energy accumulated by loading was released since residual metallic silicones are preferentially failed.

This study found microdiamonds from the Nishisonogi unit of the Nagasaki Metamorphic Complex, westren Kyushu, Japan, that is a Cretaceous high pressure - low temperature metamorphic rocks. This is first finding of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks from Japan, and the second one from the world as a ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism at the oceanic subduction zones following the first finding from Lago di Chignana. In that sense, this finding hasd a great meaning in Earth Science. Micordiamonds show four types of the ocurrence:1)inclusions in chromitite, 2)inclusions in pseudotachylyte, 3) inclusions in pyrite porphyloblasts in a metapelite, and 4) aggregates in the matrix of a metapelite. These micordimoands are confirmed by Raman microspectroscopy and especillay for the fourth type by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)>

Slickenside is a glossy and smoothly surface developed on the fault slip plane. Although the slickenside is a common and well-known microstructure, its microstructural characterization and effect on the fault behaviour have not been fully studied, so far. To understand these issues, we studied the microstructures of natural samples including nine different rock species, and conducted the frictional experiments using limestone and gabbro samples. The recovery samples from the experiments were also studied for their microstructural characterization. One of the most important results is that the slickenside is caused by deformation concentration on the top surface of the fault within 50-100um thickness during faulting. And the other, considered from the frictional experiments using limestone is that the fault having slickenside probably reduces the chance of large earthquake, and instead augments the generation of smaller creep-related seismic activities.

Long-period stacking ordered structure synchronized with chemical concentration (LPSO) has been receiving a lot of attention as a new kind strengthening phase of materials. Mg85Zn6Y9 alloy takes 18R-type LPSO, however 18R-LPSO in the alloy can convert to duplex phase consists of hcp and fcc composed of Mg and Mg-Zn-Y, respectively. In this research, the formation process of LPSO from the duplex Mg85Zn6Y9 alloy. The fcc started to collapse and then hcp lattice expanded. After that hcp lattice started to collapse and then 18R-type LPSO emerged. Based on this result and the first principle calculation results, the formation process of LPSO was discussed. Further, we have attempted the search of LPSO related structure by means of high-pressure synthesize of Mg97Zn1Yb2 alloy. The alloy does not take LPSO at 0.1 MPa and atomic size of Yb is slightly larger than RE included LPSO. As the result, LPSO does not form, but two kind novel long-period superlattices were discovered.

We have so far been discovered the transformation from neutron-irradiated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to amorphous diamond. Here, we have investigated the change of the neutron-irradiated HOPG under high pressure in high temperature (HPHT) condition. At 2300℃/15GPa, we observed transformation to a polycrystalline diamond. At 1500℃/15GP, we observed the formation of compressed graphite. The structural changes are considered to originate in some effect of neutron irradiation-induced defects.

We have developed a double stage diamond anvil cell (ds-DAC) technique for reproducible pressure by precisely fabricating 2nd stage anvils using a focused ion beam (FIB) system. Rhenium sample was successfully compressed to V/V0 = 0.633. The calculated pressure for this minimum volume varies from 430 GPa to 630 GPa, depending on the choice of the equation of state of rhenium. We conclude that the most likely pressure achieved for the minimum volume of rhenium is in a range of 430-460 GPa based on a calibration using the platinum pressure scale to 280 GPa and the latter value of 630 GPa is unreasonably high, suggesting that the pressures in an earlier study for the equation of state of rhenium would have been significantly overestimated.

We have explored the possible existence of water in the deep Earth by using the techniques of the state-of-the-art high-pressure synthesis experiment, synchrotron X-ray in situ observation and neutron scattering experiment. As the result, it became clear that bridgmanite, which is the most abundant mineral in the lower mantle, can contain significant amounts of water in its crystal structure. The fact was confirmed by chemical compositional change, possible existence of hydrogen and lattice constant change by single crystal X-ray diffraction, the detection of OH vibration peak by IR spectroscopy, the detection of hydrogen position by neutron diffraction, and the changes of physical properties such as bulk modulus. Furthermore, it became clarified that the similar substitution can occur in superhydrous phase B and phase D, which are the other high-pressure hydrous phases in the deep mantle.

Experimental techniques for sound velocity measurements and high pressure and temperature generation using Kawai-type multi-anvil apparatus have been expanded to the deeper regions of the Earth’s lower mantle. A number of new experimental results particularly relevant to the following topics have been obtained under the pressure and temperature conditions of the deep lower mantle; 1) ultrasonic sound velocity measurements on major high-pressure minerals in the mantle and subducting slabs, 2) melting temperatures, melting relations, and element partitioning among high pressure minerals of the lower mantle materials, 3) phase relations and stabilities of some major mantle minerals and hydrous minerals, leading to important implications for the chemical compositions, evolution, and dynamics of the lower mantle of the Earth.

We studied the microtexture and inclusions of polycrystalline diamonds (ballas and carbonado) to understand their origin and formation mechanism in the deep mantle. We found that most of them were formed in the subduction zone where crustal (oceanic) materials are supplied by slab subduction and C-H-O fluid (highly supersaturated with carbon) is dominated. The crystal growth and resulting microtexture seem to depend largely on the hydrodynamics (still or advective) of the growth media. Furthermore, we found, for the first time, a natural counterpart of nano-polycrystalline diamond, which is synthesized by high pressure and high temperature experiment and known to have superior hardness and mechanical properties, from a large impact crater in Russia and revealed the formation mechanism.

A both-sided CO2 laser heating system has been developed for melting and thermal diffusivity measurements of materials contained in the icy planets such as Neptune and Uranus. Melting temperatures of ice, ammonia, and magnesium oxide under high pressure have been determined by using this instrument and a diamond anvil cell. These results suggest that water should remain in the liquid state while ammonia exists as the solid state at the pressure and temperature conditions found deep within the icy planets. These facts imply that not the water predicted by the ab initio calculations but the solid ammonia is one of the dominant constituents of the non-convective layer in the icy mantle, which is responsible for producing the non-dipole magnetic field.

In this research, we observed the microstructures of both alpine-type peridotites and peridotite xenoliths in basalt, and analyzed the microchemistry around the dislocations developed in the olivine grains of the studied samples, using optical microscopy, EPMA, EBSD, TEM and ATEM techniques to clarify if the ultra-low strain rate has any effect on the olivine plasticity. We detected Fe-concentration along dislocation line in all observed samples, which was probably caused by Cottrell atmosphere. This result strongly suggests that the effect of ultra-low strain rate on olivine plasticity is very important to understand the dynamics of the upper mantle, which has not been studied so far. In addition, we tried to do the deformation experiments of olivine to support the above conclusion, which has yet to produce any confirming results.

We performed a series of high pressure and high temperature experiments using a large-volume press to synthesize a pure, single-phase hexagonal diamond sintered body. Our study demonstrated that single-phase hexagonal diamond, which includes neither traces of unreacted graphite starting material nor cubic diamond, can be obtained at 25 GPa and 1100-1500C through direct conversion of highly-oriented, highly-crystalline graphite. The sample consists of extremely thin layered units (a few to several tens of nm) and is as dense as cubic diamond. Since our preliminary hardness measurements provided very high indentation hardness values comparable to or exceeding that of cubic diamond, this nano-sintered body of pure hexagonal diamond would have potential application as a novel ultra-hard material.

Dislocations provide a direct proof of plastic deformation of minerals. We observed dislocation structure around fluid inclusions in olivine and orthopyroxene. For olivine, development of edge dislocations with loop shape whose size is analogous to that of an adjacent fluid inclusion indicate that the dislocations result from excess pressure of the fluid inclusion. The generation of loop dislocations would be controlled by yield strength of slip systems of olivine. For orthopyroxene, a few screw dislocations are identified in c-axis. The difference in dislocation density between both minerals suggests the higher yield strength of orthopyroxene. This is verified by the fact that expansion of a fluid inclusion in olivine estimated by dislocation structure can well explain difference in CO2 fluid density between the minerals. The observation of dislocation structure around fluid inclusions in xenoliths is useful to assess relative strength of slip systems among minerals.

Technical developments have been made in producing higher pressures in multianvil apparatus using sintered diamond (SD) anvils and also for precise measurements of sound velocities of high-pressure phases under the P/T conditions of the mantle transition region. We succeeded to produce pressures as high as〜80 GPa at room temperature using SD anvils, while pressures have been limited to〜60 GPa at the high temperatures relevant to the Earth's mantle. Some new phase transitions have been found in mantle minerals under the conditions of the lower mantle, and precise determination of the P-V-T relations of these and other high-pressure phases have been conducted under the corresponding P, T conditions. On the other hand, precise measurements of sound velocities have been made at pressures to〜20GPa and temperatures to〜1700K, equivalent to those of the depths of the middle part of the mantle transition region. Using this technique; measurements on ringwoodite and majorite in a pyrolite composition, polycrystalline MgO, and the garnetite (majorite + stishovite) in a basaltic composition have been made, which provided important data sets to constrain the mineralogy of the mantle transition region and to provide a new self-consistent pressure scale. In addition to these studies, we have tested the performance of the newly produced nano-polycrystalline diamond (HIME-DIA) for high-pressure devices, and found the great potential of this novel material for anvils for both multianvil apparatus and diamond anvil cell, which yielded the highest pressures of〜110 Gpa and〜20 Gpa, respectively.

We have clarified the physical properties of deep Earth mantle minerals and the effect of water. Experiments were conducted by in situ X-ray measurements in addition to quench experiments. From our previous studies, it has been clarified that high pressure polymorphs of olivine, wadsleyite and ringwoodite, can contain 2-3 wt% of H_2O in their crystal structures, but the partitioning of H_2O among these minerals has not been clarified yet. In the present study, we have clarified the partitioning of H_2O to synthesize these coexisting phases, and found that mantle transition zone should be a strong water reservoir in the Earth's interior. In addition, the measurements of thermal expansion and elastic properties of hydrous wadsleyite and hydrous ringwoodite were conducted to clarify the H_2O content in the mantle. Combined these results with seismic observation, we estimated the H_2O content in the mantle. Further extensive studies have been conducted with seismologist. We also tried to observe dehydration and physical properties of high pressure hydrous phase with capsulation using relatively light metal capsule by in situ X-ray observation. We succeeded to get X-ray spectra of superhydrous phase B using AgPd capsule, and further improved capsule, which were made by a single crystal diamond sleeve and metal caps, were designed for in situ X-ray experiment. The capsule is quite successful, and the effective acquisition of X-ray spectra under high pressure has been achieved by in situ X-ray experiment. This technique has been adopted to determine hydrous melt structure and time-resolved experiment of dehydration.
