    A test-Accelerator as Coherent Terahertz Source (t-ACTS) has been under development at Tohoku University, in which an intense coherent terahertz radiation is generated from the short electron bunches. Velocity bunching scheme in a traveling wave accelerating structure is employed to generate the short electron bunches. The in-phase and quadrature (IQ) modulator and demodulator were installed to the low-level RF systems of t-ACTS linac to control and measure the amplitude and phase of RF power. The amplitude and phase of the RF power applied to an RF electron gun cavities and the accelerating structure are controlled to produce the electron bunches with a uniform and small momentum spread suitable for the velocity bunching. By installing the feed-forward control system using IQ modulators for the beam conditioning, we have successfully generated flat RF pulses and improved beam quality, including the energy spectrum of the beam. The details of feed-forward control system of the amplitude and phase using the IQ modulator and the beam experiments are presented in this paper.

    Smith–Purcell radiation (SPR) can be generated nondestructively, providing valuable applications in light sources and beam monitors. Coherent SPR is expected to enable single-shot measurements of very short bunch lengths on the fs scale. Since the reconstruction of the longitudinal bunch shape from the coherent SPR is based on the reliable SPR spectrum, a more detailed understanding of the properties of the radiation is important in this context. Employing a 100 fs ultrashort electron bunch at the t-ACTS test accelerator, the spectrum, angular distribution, and polarization of the produced coherent SPR were measured in the terahertz frequency region and compared with a model calculation. In addition to the widely known surface current model evaluation, the effect of the geometrical shading effect on induced currents on metal surfaces was evaluated using 3D numerical calculations. The obtained SPR characteristics are also presented. In the evaluation of the grating with a shallow blaze angle, it was found that the shading effect has a non-negligible effect on the generated SPR intensity; the measured angular distribution and polarization results were in good agreement with this result.

    E-Driven method is a technical backup for positron source for ILC. In the positron source, the positron is generated and accelerated in a multi-bunch format with gaps in a macro-pulse. We employ AM (Amplitude Modulation) to suppress the transient beam-loading, but a small fluctuation is still expected, depending on the compensation accuracy. In this article, the positron yield which is ratio of numbers of positrons over electrons, is evaluated as a function of the compensation accuracy. With this result and the detail investigation of the beam loading compensation accuracy by AM, the positron yield of E-Driven Positron source for ILC is evaluated.

    The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a next-generation accelerator for high-energy physics to study the Higgs and top sector in the Standard Model, and new physics such as supersymmetry and dark matter. ILC positron source based on Electron-driven method has been proposed as a reliable technical backup. In this article, we report the design study of the positron source based on the off-the-shelf RF components. The positron is generated and accelerated in a multi-bunch format. To compensate the energy variation by the transient beam loading effect, we employ AM (Amplitude Modulation) technique and the results were 16.60 ± 0.14 MV (peak-to-peak) for L-band 2m cavity driven by 22.5 MW power and 25.76 ± 0.19 MV (peak-to-peak) for S-band 2m ac-celerator driven by 36 MW power with 0.78 A beam load-ing.

    We have developed a compact electron spectrometer (ESM) to investigate ignition mechanism in the Fast Ignition Realization Experiment project. Hot electrons, produced by the irradiation of a gold target by using a compressed chirped pulse laser, are used for auxiliary heating of the imploded core. An imaging plate is used as the electron detector for medical purposes. However, the relationship between the beam intensity and the detector signal is not clear. The ESM should be calibrated because it is highly compact and has a complex magnetic field for bending caused by installation in a limited space. We have performed the calibration by using an L-band LINAC at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University, in order to obtain an accurate electron spectrum. The calibration used a single electron pulse at two different energies, 9.5 MeV and 27.1 MeV, with 0.1-10 pC. The energy spreads are 0.2 MeV at 9.5 MeV and 0.3 MeV at 27.1 MeV. The analyzer has been tested to measure energetic electrons from plain and integrated targets irradiated by the Laser or Fast Ignition Experiment (maximum energy of 10 kJ) up to 800 J.

    The goal of this study is to establish understanding for variable polarized Terahertz (THz) radiation source. In addition to theoretical and experimental study on characteristics of polarized radiation of which is superimposed electric fields of two coherent radiations emitted from a ultra-short electron beam passing thorough the crossed undulator system, the beam dynamics under the magnetic field of the undulator system was studied. It was found out that the degree of polarization is pretty sensitive to the radiation angle, and small slippage between the radiation and the electrons that is a bit slower than the velocity of light is not negligible. Consequently a fully considered and perfected design of the guide magnetic field including the undulators is absolutely necessary for the accelerator-based variable polarized THz source to be attained.

    To realize a THz wave-driven electron accelerator, the scale matching of "Wavelength of the electromagnetic fields used for beam acceleration" and "3D beam size" is the key issue. In this research, we developed the electron source for generating the extremely short beam and an accelerating structure for THz wave with feed coupler. In the development of a DC photocathode electron gun, we clarified the parameters required to generate femtosecond electron pulses. A prototype of the Yb fiber laser for the photocathode has been build and succeeded to generate less than 100 fs laser pulse. In the design study of THz structure, we considered a type in which a dielectric is attached to the inside of a conductor. THz waves are converted from linearly polarized to radially polarized wave and faded through a tapered coupler. We demonstrated the polarization manipulation using the THz wave generated by the accelerator and established the technology for the polarization control.

    We studied x-y asymmetric beam generation for linear colliders by phase-space rotation technique. According to our result, the non-linear space charge effect is critical and causes a significant remittance growth. To prevent this problem, we propose a new method additional introducing xz emittance exchange. In this method, the beam is generated with a large spot size to prevent the non-linear space charge effect. Although a tiny y emittance is obtained by xy rotation, but the x emittance becomes too large. The large x emittance is exchanged with z-emittance by the emittance exchange technique. The study of the new proposal has been started from 2020 JFY.

    We developed a microwave undulator that can manipulate the polarization state of radiation at high speed. We designed the microwave undulator cavity that can excite two mode of electromagnetic fields for making the oscillation motion of electron beam in both the horizontal and vertical directions. The cold model of the undulator was manufactured and the electromagnetic field distribution was measured by the bead perturbation method. The electron beam trajectory was evaluated from the measured electromagnetic field distribution in the undulator cavity. We have developed a novel polarization control method that makes use of the coherence of an undulator radiation emitted from a very short electron beam. The principle of this polarization control method in THz region was demonstrated using 5 MeV electron beam and 10-periods undulator.

    We are exploring a novel method to fabricate undulator magnets having a very short period. Here, “very short period” means periods one order-of-magnitude shorter than the ordinary period of several cm. Two types of the magnet plates 100mm and 152mm long with 4-mm period length have been successfully fabricated. A connection method of these magnet plates has also been successfully developed to fabricate longer undulator magnets. Prototype undulators based on these technologies have been constructed. Field measurements and characterization show that the quality of the undulator field of these magnets is satisfactory for a very short period undulator. Test experiments for light generation using a real electron beam were made at an 50-MeV S-band linac of Tohoku University, and the first blue light was observed successfully. We made design studies of the storage ring which allowed a minimum undulator gap of 1.5mm as a compact and low-cost synchrotron light source facility.

    We performed a study on polarized x-ray generation based on self-seeding inverse Compton scattering at Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. In this study, we were able to demonstrate experimentally about two important issues that one is an extremely short electron bunch generation and another one is the generation of coherent undulator radiation. The pulse length of short electron bunch was measured using Michelson interferometer, and the deduced bunch length from frequency spectrum of the radiation was approximately 80 fs (rms). The coherent undulator radiation in terahertz region was successfully observed and its characteristics were measured. The results obtained from these experiments are valuable information for the research field related to beam physics and high intensity radiation generation.

    The temporally modulated electron bunch is useful for applications employing coherent phenomena of electron beam such as FEL (Free Electron Laser), coherent radiation, drive beam for the dielectric accelerator, etc. In this project, the temporally modulated bunch (micro-bunch structure) generation with the spatial modulation and the phase-space rotation was studied. According to the result, it is confirmed that the micro-bunch structure can be generated by this method with a large operability. It can be applicable for the pre-bunched FEL and potentially for the drive beam of the di-electric optical accelerator.

    We have developed a photocathode RF gun with DAW structure type to generate an extremely low emittance and spin polarized electron beam. NEA-GaAs cathode is used for generation of spin polarized electron beam, NEA-GaAs has a vulnerability issue and it requires an ultra-high vacuum level. It has confirmed that it is possible to install the additional vacuum pumping system to the DAW type of RF gun system without reducing the Q-value of cavities. On the other hand, to overcome a vulnerability issue of NEA surface, we evaporated CsTe semi-conductor thin film on GaAs surface and obtained a result which suggest NEA surface on GaAs wafer. This could be another technique for the NEA activation with Cs-O/F. To make the high aspect ratio of the beam shape, the X-Y emittance exchange technique is employed for RF gun system. We have performed tracking simulation for KEK-STF beam line. We established the emittance exchange method by using solenoid magnet and a set of skew quadrupole magnets.

    Laser pulse energy of third harmonic generation of 800nm became 2.7mJ from 1.0mJ with 90 femtosec at gun cathode and the pulse was within 1.0% in regard to pointing and energy stability. After 90 fs electron single bunch and 4 micro-bunch train were generated and accelerated upto 8MeV, the characteristics of broadband and quasi-monochromatic radiation due to transition and Smith-Purcell radiation were measured. By tuning the micro-bunch spacing to the THz wavelength, it is possible to generate a narrowband coherent THz wave. Depending on whether an ideal Comb beam can be formed in the RF gun by high gradient acceleration, super-radiance peak power from the small wiggler (30cm) with five period reaches about 10MW peak power at 1pC/micro-bunch and about 100MW peak power at 10pC/micro-bunch. We confirmed the Super-radiation experimentally. Innovative THz light source applications can be developed soon through international cooperative network.

    In the present study, we have been carrying out the development of overall experimental and simulation studies by using our own Laser photo-cathode RF gun which is one of the best accelerators for achieving the purpose. One of the developments, we have studied the RF deflector cavity as the candidate for the converter of electron beam structure from thin beam in space to time domain. We have succeeded the development of micro-slit by applying the FIB technology to obtain the high aspect ratio structures. Finally, we have obtained micro-slit devices with the aspect ratio of 15 with the slit size is around 100 nm.We have demonstrated the micro-spacing electron beam by using micro-slits. Further, we have operated the RF deflector cavity for the space to time conversion of electron beam, and we have succeeded the establishment of the basic technology by controlling the micro-bunched electron beam using the developed technology for the realization of coherent Compton scattering.

    Production method for short-pulse electron beam with its bunch length around 100 fs or less has been mostly established. The method employs the velocity bunching mechanism in a traveling-wave accelerating structure and an original electron gun. The gun is composed of two independent cavity cells so as to manipulate and optimize the longitudinal phase space electron distribution for the velocity bunching scheme. The accelerator system was completed, after which the electron beam was successfully accelerated up to 50 MeV, thereby it might be possible to produce coherent terahertz (THz) radiation using bending magnets and/or undulators. It can be concluded that a light source accelerator facility for THz science, in which radiation safety program was accurately approved by the national regulation, is established.

    The research has been concentrated on the highly sophisticated generation system of the soft X-ray with the energy range of 200-500 eV through the inverse Compton scattering between high quality electron beam and highly stabilized Nd : YLF laser light. High quality electron beam has been obtained from laser photocathode RF gun with specially designed for this project. On the other hand, highly stabilized Nd :YLF laser system is used for the generation of electron beam ( by 4^<th> harmonics of ND : YLF fundamenta1)and collision (by fundamental of Nd :YLF) experiments. The quality of electron beam has been measured by double slit scan technique for relatively low energy electron beam. The emittance of the electron beam is achieved to 3mm mrad, which is one of the lowest records for RF accelerated electron. The stability of laser light against to the local oscillator has been achieved to 0.26 ps. The energy of laser light per pulse has been obtained around 30mJ. The development of collision chamber is also successfully carried out. As the results, very precise measurements of soft X-ray with very low level noise have been realized. By using the system, the electron beam size measurements at the collision point and the dependence of collision angel for generated X-ray photons are demonstrated. The X-ray focusing system with specially designed zone plate is also developed.

    第3世代の放射光光源加速器では、電子ビームのエミッタンスが小さいので、挿入光源で高輝度放射光を発生することが出来る。より高い輝度を持つ放射光を発生するためには、電子ビームのエミッタンスを更に小さくする必要があり、光の回折限界に挑む第4世代光源が待ち望まれている。この研究では、既存の放射光源で電子ビームのエミッタンスを小さくする手法を開発した。放射光源であるストレージングに貯蔵された電子ビームのエミッタンスは、シンクロトロン放射の放出による振動の励起とRF加速による減衰とのつりあいによって決まるが、この効果を水平方向のベータトロン振動と縦方向のシンクロトロン振動に分配する割合を決めるdamping partition numberを変えることにより、電子ビームのエミッタンスを最大1/3にまで低下させる手法の開発研究を行い、装置の設計とビームダイナミクスに与える影響などを調べた。 この手法で減衰の分配率を効果的に変えるためには、強い2極磁場と強い4極磁場を同じ場所で同時に実現しなければならない。そこで、この要求性能を満足するために、永久磁石を用いたエッジ集束ウイグラーの開発研究を行った。永久磁石のみで構成されたいわゆるHalbach型のエッジ集束ウイグラーの5周期モデル磁石を製作して、磁場測定を行いその性能を評価した。試作したエッジ集束ウイグラーの周期長は6cmで、永久磁石は残留磁束密度1.32Tを持ち、磁石ブロックの幅は10cmで高さは2cm、エッジ角は2度である。製作したモデル集束ウイグラーの磁場を磁極ギャップの関数として測定した。磁極ギャップが3cmの時、計算で求めた中心部での最大磁場は0.43Tで、磁場勾配は1.0T/mである。測定値は、ピーク磁場で数%小さく、磁場勾配で数%大きい値であった。これらの絶対値の差を除くと、磁極ギャップ依存性を含め予想どおりの磁場分布と磁場勾配を発生することが出来る。damping partition numberを変えることにより、電子ビームのエミッタンスを低減して輝度を高める新しい手法の基礎を確立した。

    High quality electron beam generation by using a laser photo-cathode RF gun system has been performed The emittance value for the electron beam was very low enough for the Inverse Compton Scattering experiments. On the other hand, laser system for the collision with the electron beam was investigated We have achieved the stabilization of laser beam output intensity and timing to the local oscillator. The output stability was evaluated by the PSD (Power Spectrum Density) method and the value was less than 0.03%. The timing jitter was also evaluated by the same method and the value was less than 0.26ps. The pulse length of the electron beam has been measured by the new nondestructive technique named frequency analysis. The results show that the method is applicable for the measurement of electron pulse with pico-second renge. The simulation of the Inverse Compton Scattering has been performed and the optimization of the system has been realized As the results of the simulation, soft X-ray can be generated with the energy of several hundreds of eV, that is called as water windows, by the combination of the RF gun and the Nd : YLF laser. We have carried out the scattering experiment between 4.2 MeV electron beam and Nd : YLF laser, and obtained the clear X-ray signal from the X-ray, which has the time duration or 7. 7 ps with the energy of 300 eV.
