    Single crystals of a new quaternary oxide, barium hexadecayttrium tetrasilicon tritriacontaoxide, BaY16Si4O33, were obtained from a melt-solidified sample prepared by heating a mixture of BaCO3, Y2O3, and SiO2 at 2073 K. X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that Ba(SiO4)4 orthosilicate clusters in which a Ba atom is surrounded by four SiO4 tetrahedra were isolated in a framework composed of Y and O in the structure of BaY16Si4O33. The dielectric constant measured for polycrystalline ceramics of BaY16Si4O33 sintered at 1953 K was 13 (298 K, 1 MHz), and the thermal expansion coefficient was 8.70 × 10 −6 K−1 (298–873 K), which are close to the values previously reported for Y2O3.

    Silicon nitride-based ceramics having high functional mechanical properties are described with respect to phase relationships between Si3N4 and the grain boundary phases of rare-earth silicon-oxynitrides. The crystal structures of La4Si2O7N2 (La-J-phase) and Lu4Si2O7N2 (Lu-J-phase) have been determined by time-of-flight neutron powder diffractometry. The local structures of Si2 (O, N) 7 ditetrahedra including O and N atom distribution in the rare-earth silicon-oxynitrides are revealed.

    The single crystal/polycrystal sample of the transition metal oxides in which the crystal structure consisted of several crystallographically different coordination polyhedrons were produced, and the career characteristic was evaluated. Some characteristics such as the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and electronic state calculation showed that the 2H-perovskite type calcium cobaltite and spinel-type ruthenium cobaltite were in the coexistence state of the hole and electron by the electron exchange reaction and disproportionation reaction between each site resulting from two or more mixed ionic states.

    New compounds CaY_2Ge_3O_<10>, CaY_2Ge_4O_<12>, Ca_<0.8>Y_<2.4>Sn_<0.8>O_6, Ca_<1.5>Eu_3Sn_<0.5>O_7 were synthesized in the systems of rare-earth-Ca-Ge/Sn-O by solid state reaction at 1000 - 1500℃ in air. Single crystals of these compounds were obtained by annealing or by slow cooling of partially melted samples. The crystal structures of these new compounds were analyzed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. CaY_2Ge_4O_<12> is isotypic with SrNa_2P_4O_<12>, CaY_2Ge_3O_<10> crystallizes in a novel structure where Ca and Y atoms are situated disorderly in three 7-fold coordination sites between isolate germinate groups of triple GeO4 tetrahedra, Ca_<0.8>Y_<2.4>Sn_<0.8>O_6 is isotypic with Mg_3TeO_6, and Ca_<1.5>Eu_3Sn_<0.5>O_7 crystallizes in a novel structure which is related to the structure of B-form Eu_2O_3. Ca_<0.8>(Y_<1-x>Eu_x)_<2.4>Sn_<0.8>O_6 (0.0〓x<0.3) Ca_<0.8>Y_<2.4>Sn_<0.8-y>Ti_yO_6 (0.0〓y〓0.24) and Ca_<0.8>(Y_<0.9>)Eu_<0.1>)_<2.4>Sn_<0.8-y>Ti_yO_6(0.0〓y〓0.16) were prepared and investigated their luminescence properties. Under ultraviolet light irradiation of 250-264 nm, Ca_<0.8>(Y_<0.9>)Eu_<0.1>)_<2.4>Sn_<0.72>Ti_<0.08>O_6 and Ca_<0.8>(Y_<0.9>Eu_<0.1>)_<2.4>Sn_<0.8>O_6 showed bright red emission of 614 nm due to the ^5Do^<-7>F_2 transition of Eu^<3+>. A broad emission peak of Ti^<4+> centered at 450 nm was observed for Ca_<0.8>Y_<2.4>Sn_<0.72>Ti_<0.08>O_6, suggesting the possibility of energy transfer from Ti^<4+> to Eu^<3+>.

    Columnar single crystals of Ca_3Co_2O_6 and doped (Ca,Bi)_3(Co,M)_2O_6 (M=Fe,Cu) were synthesized in a molten K_2CO_3 flux. The Ca_3CO_2O_6 single crystals showed a needle-like shape and the elongated direction was confirmed to have the c axis of the crystal structure. Electric resistivity (ρ) and Seebeck coefficient (S) of the crystals were measured along the c axis direction of the crystal structure from room temperature to over 1000K in air. The Ca_3Co_2O_6 (c axis) showed p-type semiconducting behavior with ρ values of 2.0 Ωcm at room temperature and 0.013 Ωcm at 1000 K. The S values were +165 μV^<-1>K^<-1> at 300 K, +300 μV^<-1>K^<-1> at 440 K, and +169 μV^<-1>K^<-1> at 1000 K. The power factor (S^2ρ^<-1>) increased with increasing temperature and attained 0.233 mW^<-1>m^<-1>K^<-2> at 1000 K. The (Ca,Bi)_3(Co,M)_2O_6 (M=Fe,Cu) single crystals with a pseudo-one-dimensional structure were synthesized by the flux method using K_2CO_3 and p-type semiconducting behavior for the c axis of the single crystals was seen in the temperature range from room temperature to over 1000 K in air. The doping of Fe and Cu contributed to improve the power factor.

    Silicon nitride sintered material in which the grain boundary phase crystallized as Lu-containing oxynitride found to have the excellent high-temperature properties. By reduction and crystallization of the intergranular glassy phase, further improvement is expected. As a result of examining the phase relationships in detail, we found that the grain boundary composition was controlled as Lu_4Si_2O_7N_2 using the liquid phase with high nitrogen content. New silicon nitride was fabricated using high nitrogen content liquid phase in the Si_3N_4-LuN-Lu_2O_3 system. Pure lutetium nitride LuN), indispensable for high nitrogen content liquid phases, was synthesized. Lu metal was directly nitrided by gas-pressure sintering. Using this LuN, Si_3N_4-Lu_2O_3-LuN reaction root was designed for a new high-nitrogen content phase in Lu-Si-O-N quaternary system, and the phase relationship and the crystal structure was refined by X-ray analysis. Finally, we fabricate the silicon nitride ceramics with Lu-oxynitride grain boundary phase by the addition of small amount of Lu_2O_3 and by gas-pressure hot-pressing. This material showed excellent strength, oxidation resistance, high-fracture toughness and creep resistance at 1500 ℃ during 1400 h under 137 MPa tensile stress.

    An Fe-10 mass pct Ni melt was deoxidized by M (M=Si, Ti, Al, Zr, and Ce) at 1600℃, and then was quenched in water. The mean spatial diameter of inclusions tended to increase with increasing holding time, but did not show the systematic trend with respect to the deoxidation power (Si<Ti<Al< Zr<Ce). The number of particle sections per unit area decreased with decreasing deoxidation power and with increasing holding time. In all deoxidation experiments, the initial primary deoxidation products contained FeO and the content of FeO decreased with increasing the deoxidation power and holding time. An appropriate amount of Fe-50 mass% Ti alloy was added into Fe-10 mass% Ni melt, and then quenched. The number of particles per unit area, N_A, in nondendritic zone is significantly smaller than that in dendritic zone, and the N_A values in both zones increase with area fraction of solid and holding time at 1400℃. An appropriate amount of Fe-50 mass% M (M=Al, Zr, Ce) alloy or Ni-Mg alloy was added into Fe-10 mass% Ni melt, and then stirred at 1600℃. Thereafter, An Fe-50 mass% Ti alloy was added into the melt, and then stirred. The melt was cooled to 1400℃ and quenched. The N_A values for the TiN+MgO particles are considerably higher than those in other deoxidation. The size of TiN+MgO particles are smaller than those in other deoxidation. The N_A values for TiN and TiN+M_xO_y (M=Al, Zr and Ce) particles in dendritic mode are higher than those in nondendritic mode, while the size of TiN and TiN+M_xO_y (M=Al, Zr and Ce) particles in dendritic mode are smaller than those in nondendritic mode. The N_A values for the TiN and TiN+M_xO_y particles tend to slightly increase with holding time at 1400℃, but the values remain mostly unchanged.

    The supersaturation and equilibrium experiments were carried out at 1873K by using Fe-Al alloys and CaO-Al_2O_3 slags in an Al_2O_3 crucible, and the effects of Te addition and cooling rate on supersaturation were studied. The conclusions were summarized as follows. 1. Total oxygen content for a given total aluminum content obtained in equilibrium and supersaturation experiments without Te was not influenced by the cooling rate. 2. In supersaturation experiments with Te addition, total oxygen contents decreased to a constant value as a result of the removal of precipitated Al_2O_3 in the range of [% Te]>0.005 and the degree of lowering increased with a decrease in cooling rate. 3. The critical supersaturation ratio was estimated to be about 10^2 by considering the effect of Te on the interfacial energy between liquid iron and alumina. 4. Tellurium distribution ratio between an Fe-Al alloy and CaO-Al_2O_3 slag was found to be linearly related to the aluminum content in logarithmic form with a slope of 2/3, suggesting that Te in slag is present as divalent anion. An Fe-0.03-0.44mass% Al alloy or an Fe-0.07-0.58mass% Al-0.2-0.6mass% Te alloy was reoxidized with the Fe_tO(<3mass%)-containing CaO-Al_2O_3 slags at 1873 K for 5 and 60 min. The effects of slag compositions, Te addition and initial Fe_tO contents on the reoxidation of aluminum were studied. The following conclusions were obtained . 1. Acid-insoluble Al as primary inclusions containing alumina, hercynite and Fe_tO-Al_2O_3 mixture was observed in the experiments of using CaO-Al_2O_3-Fe_tO slags saturated with an Al_2O_3 crucible at 5 min. 2. The oxygen in liquid iron was supersaturated in the rapid cooling experments except those of the CaO-Al_2O_3-Fe_tO slags saturated with an Al_2O_3 crucible at 60 min with Te addition. 3. The relations between Fe_tO and Al contents were observed to be in equilibrium in the experiments except those of the CaO-Al_2O_3-Fe_tO slags saturated with an Al_2O_3 crucible at 5 min.

    1.It was confirmed from the measurement of formation free energy of oxides (FeO,CoO,NiO) by using tablet of mullite (3Al_2O_3・2SiO_2) that mullite could be used as a solid electrolyte. 2.The values for electronic conductivity limits, P_<THETA>, of mullite and ZrO_2-9 mol% MgO solid electrolytes were estimated as log (P_<THETA>/atm)=54.32-137000/T and log (P_<THETA>/atm)=27.16-75500/T,respectively/ 3.The values for oxygen activity obtained using a mullite or ZrO_2-plug type probe agreed satisfactorily with both those calculated from the Al/Al_2O_3 equilibrium and those estimated from the analyzed oxygen contents. The values for oxygen activity obtained using a ZrO_2-tube type probe were higher than those estimated from the analyzed oxygen contents. A polarization effect in a ZrO_2-tube type probe could not be eliminated in the measurement of low oxygen activity. 4.From superaturation experiments, it could be concluded that the measured EMF by a mullite probe corresponded to the oxygen activity determined bt the Al/Al_2O_3 (in mullite) equilibrium at liquid iron/electrolyte interface, while that of a ZrO_2-plug type probe corresponded to the supersaturated oxygen activity. 5.The activity of silicon in Fe-Si alloys equilibrated with SiO_2 itwere determined by a mullite or ZrO_2-plug type probe. Both results agreed well with each other. The activity of silicon in carbon-saturated Fe-Si alloys obtained by a mullite probe agreed with those calculated from the analyzed silicon contents. The measured EMF by a mullite probe corresponded to the oxygen activity determined bt the Si/SioO_2 (in mullite) equilibrium at liquid iron/electrolyte interface. 6.Since the measured EMF by a mullite probe corresponded to the aluminum or silicon activity not to the oxygen activity in bulk, it could be concluded that a mullite solid electrolytecould be used for Al-or Si-sensor in liquid metal.
