This study developed a frame creation model for innovation of meaning involving the designer’s iterative outside‐in and inside‐out practices. The model includes four types of frames: organizational frame, intrinsic frame, interpreter frame, and user frame. The model allows us to understand that an engineer have an organizational frames and intrinsic frames inside themselves. This distinction revealed that engineers could not generate ideas by mobilizing the intrinsic frame if they were adherent to the organizational frame. We suggest that understanding the interpreter frames enables the engineer to overcome adherence to the organizational frame. Additionally, the organizational innovation capability, underpinned by the design‐oriented innovation strategy, is also an enabler to mobilize intrinsic frames in a technology‐centered or solution‐centered organization.

These Design has become important to corporate competitiveness. Studies on design have paid much attention to innovation (Von Stamm, 2003; Utterback et al., 2006). A growing number of scholars see the design as the driver of the innovation, and two key ideas has gathering attention. One is the concept of “HCD (Human-Centered-Design)” and “Design Thinking” (Brown, 2008, Martin, 2009), and the other is the concept of “DDI (Design-Driven Innovation)” (Verganti, 2009). However, there is tension between two deterministic views of design-led innovation. On one hand, design is seen as a creative problem-solving activity that works towards a desired state of affairs that can be determined in advance. On the other hand, design is seen as exploratory research through which an understanding of an issue or problem emerges. This paper investigates the contribution of the designer’s attitude relating to problem-solving/exploratory research, and provides conceptual framework that explain relations between dual nature of designer’s attitude and design-led innovation.

The present study describes the development and evaluation of a groupware which aims to support group works in a large class. Students use the groupware on their smartphone. The groupware enables instructors to form student groups by using attendance information, as well as to gather each group's outcome to share with students in the whole class. Instructors can also form groups with complex constraint conditions that are difficult in general classroom practices. The evaluations were conducted in four classes in several universities, showing that the groupware was useful at practical level, while the students highly evaluated the usefulness of the system.

This study explores “design attitude” through the “Design Attitude Dojo,” a dialogical program where practitioners from diverse fields reflect on their practices. Based on qualitative analysis of eight cases, five core attitudes were identified: questioning existing frames, maintaining possibilities, openness to others, sensory and experiential understanding, and shaping meaning. These attitudes emerge situationally rather than sequentially. The study highlights the Dojo as a method for articulating tacit attitudes in practice.

This study developed a scale to measure design attitude, defined as an intentional commitment to generate meaningful differences. Based on prior literature, an 18-item self-report scale was constructed comprising three dimensions: Creativity, Refinement, and Integration. A survey of 373 participants was conducted, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the three-factor structure with acceptable fit. All subscales showed high reliability and adequate convergent and discriminant validity. This scale offers a foundation for future research on design-oriented thinking and behavior.

This study aimed to develop a scale measuring design attitudes, which are psychological tendencies held by individual designers. As a result of a review of previous studies, a 30-item questionnaire was developed, and a questionnaire survey was conducted. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, a measurement scale for design attitude consisting of 20 items was developed. On the other hand, the reliability of the scale and the goodness of fit of the model shown in this study were not sufficient. Therefore, the findings suggest the need for continued development of the scale.

The next generation of design talent has three new abilities. (1) design propose capacity, (2) ability to realize design, (3) design capacity of producing. But the specific elements about the ability of (1) and (2) is not clear. In this study, we consider designer’s ability from the point of view of three resources that ( i ) reducing read time ( ii ) reducing production cost and( iii ) raising organizational communication. As the results, we revealed the ability to be required in the development of next generation of design talents are a) ability to activate interdepartmental communication, b) ability to visualization c) ability to knowledge mediation.

The authors have developed an educational groupware OrchestratingBoard that enables group works in ordinary lectures and exercises at universities to be done easily even for massive students in a lecture hall. This is a Web application, and it is assumed that students access it through the browsers of their own information terminals. The main function is to organize groups on site according to the information of attendees, to share the outcomes within the group and exchange opinions. Practically evaluated in 6 lessons of 4 universities, it has revealed that it works well without any trouble even in a class of 300 students, complex group organization which was difficult with conventional classes becomes possible, subjective evaluation of the students on the effectiveness is also high.
