    <p>  Metastable α"-Fe16N2 have attracted much interest as a candidate for rare-earth-free hard magnetic materials. To realize high coercivity, it is necessary to utilize not only the magnetocrystalline anisotropy but also the shape anisotropy of α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles assemblies. An increase in magnetostatic couplings and intergranular exchange couplings among particles typically reduces the coercivity. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the anisotropy and magnetic interactions among α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles. We have examined the changes in morphology, structure and magnetic properties through the synthesis of α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles from various materials such as α-FeOOH, ɤ-Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. The magnetic interactions were also estimated based on experimental results obtained by analysis of the rotational hysteresis loss of randomly oriented nanoparticles. Hc and Hkptc for the α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticle assemblies for different starting materials ranged from 2.2 to 1.1 kOe, and from 11 to 12 kOe respectively. Experimental results of the normalized coercive force and normalized switching field suggests that the existence of large magnetic interactions among α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles.</p>

    For the microwave assisted magnetic recording media design, effect of magnetization reversal and intergranular exchange coupling on effective damping factor (αeff) was investigated by Q-band FMR for Co84Pt16Cr10-8mol (SiO2) granular media. Two kinds of media A and B, wicth have small and large intergranular exchange coupling, were investigated. As a result, it was found that: 1) Magnitude of the normalized intergranular exchange coupling field (Hex/Hk) was 0.2 and 0.35 for the medium A and B, respectively. 2) For the medium A, αeff was significantly increased from 0.03 to 0.11 with decreasing normalized magnetization |M|/Ms from 1 to 0.4. At the same time, for the medium B, αeff was increased from 0.05 to just 0.07. 3) Origin of difference of αeff increment is considered that difference of distribution and magnitude of the intergranular exchange coupling.

    As one of the methods for ultra high density recording of hard disk drives, Thermally Assist Magnetic Recording (TAMR) increases memory density and thus attracts attention. The key technology of the TAMR is applying laser light as well as plasmon antenna to generate localized near-field spot. We fabricated plasmon antennas on magnetic film to understand fundamental recording capability by confined near-field stimulated by ultra short laser pulse. Some square plasmon gold antennas were deposited over a magnetic recording film (Co55Pt30Cr15-SiO2). We successfully confirmed that small magnetic domains of 67 nm × 62 nm were written at the corner of the plasmon antennas by the surface plasmon effect with a femto-second laser pulse.

    Effect of magnetization reversal and intergranular exchange coupling on effective damping factor (α_<eff>) was investigated by Q-band FMR for Co_<84>Pt_<16>Cr_<10>-8mol (SiO_2) granular media. Intergranular exchange coupling was indirectly changed by surface roughness of Ru underlayer. As a result, it was found that: 1) Magnitude of the normalized intergranular exchange coupling field H_<ex>/H_k was 0.2 and 0.35 for small and large intergranular exchange coupling medium, respectively. 2) For a small intergranular exchange coupling medium, α_<eff> was significantly increased from 0.03 to 0.11 with decreasing normalized magnetization |M|/M_s from 1 to 0.4. At the same time, for large intergranular exchange coupling medium, α_<eff> was increased from 0.05 to just 0.07. 3) Origin of difference of α_<eff> increment is considered that difference of distribution and magnitude of the intergranular exchange coupling.

    Relation among structure of Ru underlayer and atomic layer stacking structure and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy (Ku) of sputtered Co films was discussed. Small torque with amplitude below theoretical limit |KuCobulk-2π(MsCobulk)2| = 6.8×106 erg/cm3 was obtained for Co film with thickness dCo < 30 nm deposited on rough Ru underlayer. Structure analysis of the thin Co films with dCo < 30 nm deposited on rough Ru underlayer demonstrated that: 1) Magnitude of stacking faults were less than 1%, which meant the Co films had almost perfect hcp stacking, 2) Lattice constant c was expanded about 0.6% with retaining lattice constant a, 3) Thin Co films had rough surface which reflected morphology of the Ru underlayer. According to these results, it was thought that initial Co growth reflected vertical stacking of Ru underlayer on inclined crystal plane of the rough Ru underlayer. Ku was derived by correcting torque amplitude with self-demagnetizing energy considering surface morphology of Co film. Ku took maximal value of 5.0×106 erg/cm3 at dCo = 30 nm, and rapidly decreased with decreasing dCo. Reduction of Ku in dCo < 30 nm might be caused by decrement of crystallographic uniaxial anisotropy for Co film due to expansion of the c axis.

    Enhancement of the longitudinal Kerr effect by excitation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in ferromagnetic Co72Fe8B20/Au stacked films was investigated in a Kretschmann configuration with p-polarized light at 633 nm. We found that (1) it was possible to excite SPR in the bi-layer structure of Co72Fe8B20/Au with the necessity of the Au layer faced to air. We also found that (2) the dependence of the longitudinal Kerr effect on the incident angle indicated that the saturation component of ellipticity was bell-shaped in the hysteresis loop, while the rotation angle had a dispersed-shaped distribution. In contrast, the rotation angle was bell-shaped for the linear component, while the ellipticity had a dispersed-shaped distribution. Moreover, we discovered that (3) the saturation component of the longitudinal Kerr effect in the Co72Fe8B20/Au (20 nm) stacked film had a steep maximum as a function of the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer, and that the strongest resonance occurred at a ferromagnetic layer thickness of 8 nm. In addition, we found that (4) the linear component of the longitudinal Kerr effect was caused by the Faraday effect of the prism and glass substrate, which was extremely enhanced by SPR.

    Effects of substrate heating of Co sputtered film with c-plane sheet texture on atomic-layer stacking were investigated and correlation between the atomic-layer stacking and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant (K_u) were analyzed. Through the quantitative evaluation of degree of stacking faults using laboratory-scale in-plane XRD, it was found that; (1) c-plane-oriented pseudo-hep structure with around 10 % fcc stacking (P_<fcc>) as stacking faults was formed in Co films sputtered at room temperature (R.T.). By sputtering with 400℃ substrate heating, nearly complete hep structure with less than 0.1 % fcc stacking was successfully made. (2) The value of saturation magnetization (M_s) was constant and the same as the value of hcp Co bulk with increasing substrate temperature (T_<sub>), while the value of K_u changed drastically against T_<sub> and took the maximum value of 6.1 × 10^6 erg/cm^3. (3) In the analysis of perpendicular magnetic torque with twofold and fourfold components, K_<u2> contributes dominantly to K_u (= K_<u1> + K_<u2>) at P_<fcc> = 7 - 10 %. Moreover, K_<u1> and K_<u2> has the same contribution to K_u at P_<fcc> = 2.5 % and K_<u1> contributes to K_u more than K_<u2> at P_<fcc> = 0 %. (4) Therefore, it was revealed that substrate heating was effective method to eliminate stacking faults in oplane-oriented Co magnetic grains, which accordingly enhances the uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of Co sputtered film to the same value of hep Co bulk (K_u = 5.97 × 10^6 erg/cm^3).

    We propose a new test method for surface plasmon antennas applied to thermally assisted magnetic recording. Plasmon antennas were directly fabricated on a CoPtCr granular recording medium to maintain a distance between the antennas and the film. This method also makes it possible to prevent the antennas or media from becoming degraded. A silicon nitride dielectric layer was placed between the antennas and the magnetic layer to maintain a precise distance. We chose a thickness of 3 nm for the dielectric layer. Four hundred triangular Au antennas were formed on the medium with an E-beam lithographic technique. The written magnetic domains below the surface of the plasmon antennas were observed by magnetic force microscopy. Therefore, we were able to test the thermal effect of the plasmon antennas by directly placing them on the magnetic film.

    We carried out oblique-incidence sputtering and analyzed in detail the growth mechanism necessary to achieve both good magnetic isolation and a reduction of the Ru interlayer thickness. The results revealed that : (1) Ru grains in the obliquely sputtered Ru thin film possessed a c -plane sheet texture due to epitaxial growth on seed layer grains, and deep gaps were observed at the grain boundaries ; (2) evaluation of the magnetic properties of the magnetic layer deposited on obliquely and conventionally sputtered Ru films suggests that magnetic isolation was enhanced by oblique-incidence sputtering ; (3) an obliquely sputtered pseudo-hcp PdW, CoCr interlayer also enhanced the magnetic isolation of the subsequent magnetic layer ; (4) following the initial growth of a continuous Ru film 1 nm thick, the grains grew, whereas by the conventional method this initial continuous Ru film grew to a thickness of 8nm, showing clear suppression of the continuous Ru layer by oblique-incidence sputtering, and (5) the media using an obliquely sputtered Ru interlayer showed Vact/Vgrain = 1.9 with a top layer thickness of 8 nm ; thus, it was possible to reduce the Ru interlayer thickness by suppressing the constitution of the bottom layer.

    We propose a technique for low-gas-pressure (0.6 Pa) deposition of a granular film consisting of Co-based metallic grains and stoichiometric SiO2 grain boundaries by using reactive sputtering. As a typical example, we experimented in forming Co-SiO2 granular films by using dc magnetron sputtering with Ar+O2 mixed gas with a Co92.3Si7.7 (at%) alloy target. Detailed analyses of the composition, microstructure, and magnetic properties of the granular films revealed that: (1) a high deposition rate of 3.4 nm/s was realized under a Si-selective oxidization condition of the surface of the CoSi alloy target. (2) The granular film with an O/Si composition ratio of 2 was successfully achieved under the selective oxidization conditions. (3) c-plane-oriented Co grains with SiO2 grain boundaries were formed on a Ru underlayer. (4) The low-gas-pressure process made it possible to enhance the columnar grown of Co grains without tapering off. These results suggest that the low-gas-pressure process will be effective in improving corrosion and impact resistance even for the current mass-produced perpendicular magnetic recording media with CoPtCr (-SiO2, -TiO2) granular materials.

    A Faraday-effect system to measure small patterned areas with about a 6-μm sized laser spot was constructed. We found that highly accurate Faraday measurements were possible for a patterned array of nanodots and also obtained the dependence of the Faraday effect on the angle of the sample. Two lasers with wavelengths of 633 nm and 690 nm were close to the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelengths of the noble material of Au. A nanodot array, consisting of magnetic materials made up of a Co/Pt multilayer, sandwiched by Au, that was not more than 100 nm in diameter, was fabricated, and the optical and magneto-optical properties were investigated.

    Recently, the development of the energy efficient equipment is driven by environmental problems and the energy resource depletion problem. The energy loss associated with the motors and the transformers is a huge amount, and it is necessary to execute the efficiency improvement on these devices in order to decrease the global environment stress. For these devices, an analysis means for which the magnetic process by the domain observation is very useful in an amorphous strips and the flat rolled magnetic steel sheets. However, there was a problem that the size of the device was large and the evaluation over a large area was necessary. We have developed the Kerr effect microscope that can promptly evaluate the magnetic district structure of micron order. This time, we applied the basic technology established in the Kerr microscope optical system to the focused optical system. As a result, we developed the wide viewing domain imaging device witch can observe the magnetic domain of the mm order, and can detect the direction of the magnetization.

    The relationship among the sputtering conditions, composition, microstructure, and magnetic properties of Co-Si-O granular film deposited using various metal-oxide composite targets was investigated. The raw materials of the sintered targets were (a) (Co)-(SiO2), (b) (Co)-(Si)-(Co3O4), and (c) (Co)-(Si)-(CoO) retaining the same nominal composition of (Co)-7.7mol%(SiO2), Co79.9Si6.7O13.4 (at%). It was found that; (1) in the case of Ar gas pressure (PAr) of 0.6-4.0 Pa, the discharge voltage with targets (b) and (c) was lower than that with target (a), (2) the oxygen content of the film became larger with increasing PAr from 0.6-8.0 Pa, (3) each granular film deposited by using the three targets with the same sputtering conditions showed nearly the same film composition, phase, microstructure and magnetic properties. This indicates that it is possible to control oxygen content and O/Si ratio in the granular film at the same time by increasing the amount of raw material of oxide in the composite target. Moreover, it is indispensable for formation of SiO2 phase in the films to choose at least two kinds of raw materials including Si or O.

    Suppression of spike noise and wide adjacent track erasure (WATE) are important technical issues for perpendicular recording media (PRM) with a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL). To solve these problems simultaneously, we propose in this paper a new type of SUL with negative uniaxial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (Ku) induced by material with negative uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy (Kugrain). For the proposed SUL, it can be expected that (1) WATE will be suppressed due to a wide distribution of magnetic flux under the return yoke, and that (2) spike noise will be eliminated due to the formation of a Neel wall instead of a Bloch wall. We selected hcp-CoIr as a negative kugrain material and fabricated c-plane-oriented CoIr film by sputtering. Kugrain of c-plane-oriented CoIr film had a minimum value of -6 × 106 erg/cm3 (saturation magnetization, Ms = 920 emu/cm3 ) at an Ir content of 22 at.%. In PRM using c-plane-oriented CoIr films as SULs, WATE could be suppressed compared with the PRM using amorphous CoZrNb as SUL. And from evaluation of envelopes for PRM using c-plane-oriented CoIr films as SULs, it was found that spike noise could not be clearly observed with a CoIr thickness below the calculated critical thickness of Neel wall formation.

    To combine &ldquo;maintenance of thermal stability&rdquo; and &ldquo;magnetic isolation among magnetic grains&rdquo; for CoCr-based perpendicular media, we focus attention on the post-annealing process. Significant improvement of the magnetic properties is confirmed for the post-annealed media utilizing titanium as both cap- and under-layers. In consequence it was found that a remarkable large coercivity of 9.1 kOe and squareness of 1 are realized for Ti/Co68Cr16Pt16/Ti post-annealed media; a non-ferromagnetic TiCoPt layer with B2 type structure is formed between the Ti and CoCrPt layers by post-annealing; and a remarkable improvement of the magnetic properties is caused by both magnetic isolation among magnetic grains and elimination of the nanocrystalline initial layer, which behaves like a soft magnetic layer.

    We propose a noble stacked soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) with the so-called top-type pinning structure, which consists of a soft magnetic layer (SM layer) fabricated by plating and an antiferromagnetic layer (AFM layer) deposited by sputtering, on an Al/NiP disk. Through investigation of the structure and magnetic properties of this stacked SUL, we clarified the following points: (1) the thermal stability of NiFeP plated on an Al/NiP disk is 280°C, which is the crystallization temperature of the amorphous NiP layer; (2) to induce large unidirectial magnetic anisotropy in the SUL, it is necessary to introduce a soft magnetic buffer layer and apply dry etching to the NiFeP surface; (3) a unidirectional magnetic anisotropy field can be induced in an SM layer fabricated by plating as well as in one fabricated by sputtering, which results in the whole disk having a single-domain structure.

    To develop nanocrystalline soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) material with high saturation magnetization and low SUL noise, we studied the properties of an Fe-Si-Al-N film. To obtain SUL with high stray-field stability, the Fe-Si-Al-N film is applied to antiferro/ferromagnetic (AFM/FM) multilayer films. As the results, the following points are clarified: 1) As the composition of FeSiAlN film, with increasing nitrogen flow ratio, Fe is replace with N on constant Al + Si concentration line. 2) With increasing nitrogen content, soft magnetic properties of FeSiAlN film are increased due to nanocrystalline effect. 3) As the grain size of FeSiAlN film is decreased, the SUL noise of FeSiAlN film is reduced. Since subsequent high temperature annealing process is not necessary, this process is promising to be applied for moderate temperature process. 4) In the AFM/FM stacked SUL film, the unidirectionOal exchange energy J_k is decreased with the total magnetization of the film.

    A guideline for selecting materials to be used in CoCr-based perpendicular media with high squareness and normalized coercivity was investigated by taking the effects of thermal agitation and intergranular exchange coupling into consideration. The main results are as follows: (1) The current media have a low maximum value of Hc/Hk grain of 0.35, which is considered to be due to the effects of thermal agitation for Ku grain Vact/kT <150, and intergranular exchange coupling for Ku grain Vact/kT > 200. (2) Media with low 4πMs/Hkgrain and large α tend to show a low positive Hn/Hkgrain. (3) Media with large 4πMs/Hkgrain and large α tend to show a low effective nucleation field Hneff. On the other hand, some media that have low α, with a value of about 1, show positive Hneff. The behavior of Hneff is considered to be caused by thermal agitation. (4) To realize a medium with S = 1 and α as low as possible, the selection of a material with 4πMs/Hk grain = 0.2-0.3 (for α = 1.6) is promising. This medium is expected to show values of Ku grain Vact/kT of 150-200, and of Hc/Hk grain of 0.22-0.28. To realize a medium with high Hc/Hk grain, 4πMs/Hk grain = 0.6-0.7 (for α = 1.3) is promising. This medium is expected to show values of Ku grain Vact/kT of 150, and of Hc/Hk grain of 0.35.

    To reduce the spike noise caused by stray magnetic fields, we investigated layered stacking soft-magnetic underlayers (SULs) with interlayer magnetic coupling. To reduce SUL noise as well, nanocrystalline or amorphous materials are used in the large part of the soft-magnetic layer. Through investigation of material problems in ferromagnetic (FM)/nonmagnetic (NM) stacked SULs and antiferromagnetic (AFM)/ferromagnetic (FM) stacked SULs, the following points were clarified: (1) In the case of FM/NM stacked layers using Ru as the NM layer and CoZrNb as the FM layer, when the layer structure of CoZrNb (150 nm)/Ru (0.6 nm)/CoZrNb (150 nm) was adopted, the M-H loop was shifted due to RKKY interlayer exchange coupling. The value of the interlayer exchange coupling constant J was derived at a small value of 0.015 erg/cm2. (2) In the above layer structure, by sputtering the Ru layer under At + O2 atmosphere, or by introducing a Co70Fe30 layer which has high saturation magnetization Ms, between the Ru layer and CoZrNb layer, the value of Hex and J were enhanced. The J value shows prospects of enhancement over one digit if appropriate materials and process are introduced. (3) In AFM/FM stacked SULs, the unidirectional anisotropy constant Jk between the AFM and FM layers was reduced by increasing the thickness of the FM layer. The principal problem is how to suppress the reduction of Jk by controlling the soft magnetic properties of the FM layer.

    The thickenss dependence of a magnetic field from which the rotational hysteresis loss has vanished was experimentally investigated for Co-CrPtB perpendicular recording media. It was clarified that (1) in Co72Cr16Pt8B4 media with film thickenss dmag. under 200 nm and Co64Cr24Pt8B4 media with dmag. under 100nm, a homogeneous structure was realized, except for the existence of an initial growth region with a thickness of about 2 nm; (2) for both media, the perpendicular rotational hysteresis loss Wr, the maximum field of Wr, Hp, and the field where Wr=0, HWr=0, increase with increasing dmag.; (3) for both media,HWr=0 increase with increasing dmag. and saturates at a field of about magnetic anisotropy Hkgain; and (4) for a medium with a thim magnetic film, at an applied field HWr=0 < H < Hkgain in a direction parallel to the film plane, a multi-domain state is realized, even though no hysteresis loss has been observed in torque measurement at this field. The last of these findings is considered to be due to the existence of thermal agitation between the multi-domains.

    The perpendicular magnetic properties and structures of CoCrPtB/Ti, CoCrPtB/Co60Cr40/Ti, and CoCrPtB/Co60Cr40/C/Ti perpendicular media were investigated. By examining the growth forms of a Co60Cr40 intermediate layer and a magnetic layer, as well as the effects of inserting a very thin C layer, the following points were clarified: (1) in the case of a Co60Cr40 intermediate layer fabricated without a C layer, hcp phase with a high concentration of Cr is formed at Tsub.≤ 250°C, and both σ phase and hcp phase with low Cr concentrations are formed at Tsub.≥ 300°C; (2) in the case of a Co60Cr40 intermediate layer fabricated on a very thin C layer, hcp phase with high concentration of Cr is formed only at Tsub.≤ 150°C. At Tsub.≥ 200°C, only the initial nucleation growth of hcp phase with low Cr concentration is formed, which inhibits the formation of σ phase; (3) in the case of a CoCrPtB/Co60Cr40/C/Ti medium, nanocrystalline grains are formed in the initial growth region. In the upper region, c-plane-oriented grains of hcp phase with Cr segregated structure grow in a columnar shape. As a result, the grains of the magnetic layer grow epitaxially on the intermediate layer and the perpendicular magnetic properties are improved remarkably.

    To find a soft underlayer with low noise characteristics for double-layer perpendicular media, we investigated the establishment of methods to control the soft-magnetic properties of FeTaN thin film fabricated by an in-line process, and studied the correlation between the soft-magnetic and noise characteristics of FeTaN thin films. As a result, it was clarified that (1) a uniaxial amisotropy field as high as 7.9 Oe with the easy axis in the radial direction of the disk can be induced by maintaining the nitrogen gas flow ratio (FN2/Ftotal) between 10% and 30%, while keeping the saturation magnetization as high as 1.4 T to 1.6 T and the film roughness Ra as low as 0.3 nm; (2) in FeTaN thin film fabricated with FN2/Ftotal larger than 15%, it is possible to control the easy axis of the induced uniaxial anisotropy in the radial or circumferential direction, by the combining magnetic field application with annealing and cooling processes; (3) it is important to control the stripe domain structure in order to reduce UL noise, even in FeTaN thin film; (4) in FeTaN thin films that have no stripe domain structure, as the coercivity in the easy direction decreases, the media noise tends to decrease a little; (5) FeTaN is a material that shows very low UL noise in comparison with other soft-magnetic materials such as FeBN, FeSiAl, and NiFeMo.

    Heterogeneity of the perpendicular magnetization process dependence on film depth for CoNiCrTa and CoCrTaPt perpendicular thin-film media is discussed based on a magneto-optical analysis. Results show that: (1) by means of longitudinal Kerr equipment, evaluation for separating longitudinal magnetization of a columnar structure and initial layer is possible; (2) in a perpendicular magnetization process, the top of the medium has high coercive force and high squareness compared with the bottom of the medium; and (3) the top of the medium has homogeneous magnetization thicker than 25 nm, and the bottom has a thickness of about 10 nm. The top and bottom of the medium are considered to be a columnar structure and initial layer, respectively.

    We proposed a new analysis using perpendicular torquemetry to evaluate the thickness of the initial growth layer, and to define the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of columnar structure. In CoNiCrTa media, the initial growth layer consists of nano-crystalline grains whose c-axes are randomly oriented in three dimensions, and the columnar structure consists of grains with the c-plane parallel to the film plane. The plotted product of perpendicular anisotropy to magnetic film thickness versus magnetic film thickness (Ku × dmag. vs dmag.) for these media reveals that magnetic grains in the columnar structure have a constant uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the order of 106 erg/cm3, independent of the magnetic film thickness. By taking account of magneto-optical analysis, we can derive the magnetization process of the initial layer, which is mutually coupled with the neighboring columnar structure, due to its soft magnetic property.

    To decrease surface roughness of c-plane-oriented epitaxial MnSb films fabricated on Si (111) single crystal substrates, reduction of the optimum substrate temperature for formation of c-plane-oriented MnSb films was explored based on the results obtained from precise analyses of initial film growth of c-plane-oriented MnSb films. The main results are as follows: (1) during MnSb film deposition on the Si (111) substrate at Tsub. = 250°C, (a) with an initial layer of MnSb film less than 70 nm thick, Mn reacted with Si, resulting in formation of MnSi, and Sb re-evaporated; (b) with this film region thicker than 70 nm, MnSb was formed on MnSi; (2) the MnSi (111) epitaxial buffer layer played an important role in achieving c-plane-oriented MnSb grains on the Si (111) substrate; (3) by using two-step sputtering, which is a method for fabricating MnSb films on the MnSi layer after changing substrate temperature, (a) we reduced the substrate temperature for preparing the c-plane-oriented MnSb film from 250°C to 200°C, and (b) expanded the temperature range where c-plane-oriented MnSb grains were created, from 150°C to 230°C; and (4) the use of two-step sputtering at Tsub. = 150°C decreased the surface roughness of the film to Ra= 3.6 nm.

    Ferromagnetic MnSb films were fabricated on Si(100) and (111) single crystal substrates by dc planar sputtering. The effects of the substrate temperature and bias on the epitaxial growth are discussed. The main findings are as follows: (a) MnSb grains grown at Tsub. < 170°C were (110) oriented irrespective of the crystal planes of the Si substrates; (b) MnSb grains with (101), (102), and (001) orientations existed in films prepared at Tsub. > 170°C on Si(100) substrate; (c) MnSb grains epitaxially grown on Si(111) substrate were (101)-oriented at Tsub. = 200°C and (001)-oriented at Tsub. = 250°C; (d) in the sputtering method used, the substrate voltage changed from 0 to - 200 V, corresponding to a change in the ion assist energy from 0 to 40 eV/atom; and (e) the use of an ion assist of 15 eV/atom to Si(111) substrate decreased the epitaxial growth temperature of MnSb(001)-oriented grains from 250°C to 200°C.

    Ferromagnetic MnSb films were fabricated on Si (001), (110), and (111) single-crystal substrates by facing-target sputtering and conventional planar sputtering. As a result, epitaxial growth of MnSb was realized by facing-target sputtering. However, it was not realized by planar sputtering. According to the plasma diagnosis, this difference in epitaxial growth was caused either (1) by the damage of Si substrate and MnSb film by the bombardment of high energy electron and/or negative ion or (2) due to the lack of energy supply to MnSb clusters on substrate by the incidence of the positive ions so that MnSb clusters were restricted thus lattice matching to the Si single-crystal substrate. From these results, control of the energy and density of the charged particles was found to be very important for realizing epitaxial growth of MnSb sputtered films.

    The mechanism of the enhancement of the MO Kerr rotation in the shortwavelength region for Mn50Sb44Pt6 films was investigated from the viewpoints of the dispersed-precipitates microstructure and of their components of the dielectric tensor. As results, it was found that (1) the PtMnSb phase with fcc structure coherently precipitated at grain boundaries of the host solid solution of the hex. MnSb(Pt) phase at the annealing temperatures less than 300°C, (2) the PtMnSb phase recrystallized to be the size of about 1000 Å, with changing the crystal orientation from (110) to a high atomic density plane of (111) at the annealing temperatures more than 300°C, (3) the PtSb2 phases nucleated and grew to be dendrite as a result of the diffusion of Pt atoms from the PtMnSb phase after annealing over 400°C, (4) for the Mn50Sb44Pt6 film, the maximum of K, where xx&#039; was relatively small, was originated from xy&#039;, (5) the appearance and the shift of the K maximum were caused by the xy&#039; maximum, and (6) in the sharing layers between the MnSb phase and the PtMnSb phase under the coherent precipitation process, only the magneto-optical transition (xy&#039; maximum) of the MnSb phase at 2.50 eV was observed.

    The relationship between the maximum of a magneto- optical Kerr rotation, θK, in the region of 500∼550 nm (2.48∼2.25 eV) and the formation process of the PtMnSb phase for the Mn50Sb44Pt6 films was discussed. As results, it was found; (1) The PtMnSb phase coherently precipitated at grain boundaries of the host solid solution of the hex. MnSb(Pt) phase at the annealing temperature less than 300°C. (2) The PtMnSb phase recrystallized to be the size of about 1000Å, with changing the crystal orientation into a high atomic density plane of (111) at the annealing temperature more than 300°C. (3) The appearance and the shift of the θK maximum were caused by the εxy' maximum. (4) The εxy'maximum of the PtMnSb phase at 2.00 eV was inactive in the coherent precipitation process, but active in the recrystallization process.

    The contribution of the unique magneto-optical structure with the MnSb and MMnSb (M=Au, Pd) phases to the magneto-optical spectra of the composites films with various MnSb-MMnSb volume fraction was discussed in connection with the dielectric tensor analysis. As results, it was found; (1) The Mn-Sb-M (M=Au, Pd) films after annealing at 300°C consisted of MnSb with the hexagonal phase and MMnSb with the f. c. c. phase. (2) For the Mn-Sb-Au films, the magneto-optical Kerr effect was originated from the off-diagonal part of dielectric tensor, εxy', of the hex. MnSb phase. (3) For the Mn-Sb-M (M=Pd, Pt) films, the εxy' maxima of ferromagnetic MMnSb (M=Pd, Pt) phases did not change monotonously against volume fraction of MnSb-MMnSb phases.

    The magneto-optical (MO) Kerr effect for MnSbPt films with a giant magnetic Kerr rotation was investigated in connection with the microstructure. The results revealed that (1) the PtMnSb phase with fcc structure coherently precipitated at the grain-boundary of the matrix MnSb phase with hcp structure after annealing in the range from 200°C to 300°C, (2) both the MnSb phase and the PtMnSb phase were recrystallized after annealing in the range from 300°C to 400°C, (3) the PtSb2 phases nucleated and grew to be dendrite as a result of the diffusion of Pt atoms from the PtMnSb phase after annealing at over 400°C, and (4) the change in the MO Kerr effect for MnSbPt films annealed at over 300°C corresponded to the decrease in the volume-ratio of the PtMnSb phase to the MnSb phase, owing to the formation and growth of the PtSb2 phase.

    The mechanism of the enhancement of the MO Kerr rotation for Mn50Sb44Pt6 film was investigated from the view-points of the phases and their components of the dielectric tensor. As a result, it was found that after annealing at 300°C, (1) for (MnSb)50-0.5xPtx (x < 14 at%) films, the PtMnSb phase made a larger contribution to the ε'xx spectrum than would be expected from the Pt concentration, (2) concerning the ε'xy at 2.3 eV and 4.7 eV, where the PtMnSb phase showed ε'xy structure, with increasing Pt concentration x along the line of (MnSb)50-0.5xPtx, the value of ε'xy at 4.7 eV decreased monotonously, but the value of ε'xy at 2.3 eV was maximum at x=17at%, and (3) for the Mn50Sb44Pt6 film, the maximum of θK, where ε'xx was relatively small, was originated from ε'xy.

    Ferromagnetic MnSb films were fabricated on Si (001), (110), and (111) single-crystal substrates by facing-targets sputtering at various substrate temperatures Ts (R.T. to 400°C). As a result, epitaxial growth of MnSb was realized at a relatively low substrate temperature of Ts=200°C. The crystal orientation between the MnSb and the Si substrate was found to be as follows: (a) MnSb (001)//Si (111). MnSb[210]//Si[112], (b) MnSb (100)//Si (110), MnSb [001]//Si[001], and (c) MnSb (101)//Si (001), MnSb[010]//Si <110>. The value of the surface roughness Ra for an MnSb epitaxial film (3000Å, Ts=200°C) is about 80Å. According to the torque measurement, the easy axis and hard axis of magnetization for MnSb are [010] and [001], respectively. The value of the uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy Ku is −4 × 106 erg/cm3. The easy axis and hard axis of magnetization in the (001) plane of MnSb were found to be [210] and [100], respectively. The value of K'3 is about 103 erg/cm3.

    MnSbPt films containing 50 at%Mn, 44 at%Sb, and 6 at% Pt were prepared by RF sputtering. XRD, TEM, and NMR studies revealed that in the as-deposited state, MnSbPt films had a disordered hexagonal structure, and that after annealing at 300°C NiAs-type structure and an fee-type structure were formed, promoting phase separation in MnSbPt films with a giant magneto-optical Kerr rotation. The assumption of a two-phase mixture of NiAs and fee structures is difficult to explain the giant magneto-optical effect in the short wevelength region (∼500 nm) for MnSbPt films. The giant magneto-optical effect is thought to be associated with the microstructure due to the phase separation process.

    MnSbPt films (thickness of 1000Å) with the concentration of 50at%Mn. 44at%Sb and 6at%Pt annealed 300°C showed giant Kerr rotation angle of about 0.9° at short wavelength of λ=500nm. The results of structural analysis with X-ray and NMR revealed that the giant Kerr rotation angle observed in present films is closely related to the MnSb compound including Pt atom in NiAs structure. The experiments using powder alignment samples prepared under external magnetic field showed that the direction of the easy axis of magnetization of present MnSbPt with NiAs structure was found to change from c-plane to c-axis with increasing Pt concentration.

    For realizing perpendicular magnetic recording media (PRM) for hard disk drive (HDD), precisely controlled fabrication technology with angstrom scale according to the required properties is essential from material, processes, and physical view point. PRM presently consist of three functional parts; a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL), a nonmagnetic intermediate layer, and a recording layer (RL). The control of domain structure through interlayer coupling induced by RKKY-like interaction in SUL and narrower size distribution of the magnetic particles with magnetically decoupling in recording layer are indispensable for advanced PRM with high signal to noise ratio and thermal stability. In this paper, structure and magnetic properties for SUL and RL in a real fabricated PRM is discussed in connection with sputtering process parameters and also target materials.<br>

    Since the performance of magnetic devices depends on the local magnetic properties of micron- or submicron-sized regions in their materials, the need for sophisticated observation of magnetic domains is stronger than ever. The Kerr microscope has the great advantage of allowing easy handling and smooth observation without any auxiliary preparation. In this report, we describe two types of Kerr microscope using the scanning method and the photographic method, which allow both in-plane and out-of-plane domain observation. Recent results of domain observation of elements or materials used in magnetic recording devices and spintronics devices are also briefly introduced.

  1. ホットカソード法による切削加工用酸化物・窒化物皮膜の高速スパッタ成膜技術の開発

    酸化物・窒化物薄膜の形成は、半導体メモリ・磁気記録デバイス等の先端電子デバイスから、光学素子の反射防止膜・波長フィルタ、切削工具用の超硬皮膜など、汎用製品を実現する上で必須な基盤技術である。古くは湿式メッキ法が活用され形成されることが多かったが、最近では皮膜の薄膜化・高機能化に伴い乾式 (真空) プロセスによる形成が主流となり、飛来粒子を基体に直接堆積させるPVD法、特にその中でも緻密・高強度・高密着性の点で優れているスパッタリング法が産業応用上では極めて重要である。しかしながら一般に酸化物・窒化物薄膜のスパッタ成膜では、組成制御と高速成膜とを両立することが困難であり、量産性を律速していた (一般に酸化物の成膜速度は金属の1/10以下)。そこで本研究では、組成制御が比較的容易なRFスパッタリング法を選択し、切削工具用の皮膜として必要とされるAl, Ti, Cr系の酸化物・窒化物を高速で成膜する技術の確立を目的とする。

    本研究の目的は,ハードディスク用垂直磁気記録媒体,スピントロニクスデバイスへの応用を念頭に,磁性デバイスに必須な一軸結晶対称性を具備する機能性材料を創製し,代替非磁性材料の選択の自由度を大幅に拡張し,また一軸磁気異方性が高い強磁性薄膜材料を見出すことにある.実現手法は,価電子数の制御により,稠密面原子積層合金薄膜中に膜面と平行にのみ積層欠陥を導入する,もしくは極力排除することにより,層状不整度を制御した擬似六方晶薄膜を開発することによる.結晶相とアモルファス粒界相からなるグラニュラ材料の創製を目指す.

    本研究では、1Tbit/inch2を超える超高密度ハードディスク媒体の要素技術として、量産性に好適なドライプロセスのみによる自己組織化ナノ構造テンプレート中間層の形成・薄膜化技術ならびに磁性結晶粒の反転磁界制御技術を確立することを目標とする。これらの技術の組合せにより非磁性中間層厚5nm以下、平均粒径7nm以下、粒径分散幅1nm以下、に組織制御され、かつ、熱安定性と記録容易性を兼ね備えるグラニュラ型垂直磁気記録媒体の実現の見通しが立つ。
