Abstract Understanding telescope pointing (i.e. line of sight) is important for observing the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and astronomical objects. The Moon is a candidate astronomical source for pointing calibration. Although the visible size of the Moon (30′) is larger than that of the planets, we can frequently observe the Moon once a month with a high signal-to-noise ratio. We developed a method for performing pointing calibration using observational data from the Moon. We considered the tilts of the telescope axes as well as the encoder and collimation offsets for pointing calibration. In addition, we evaluated the effects of the nonuniformity of the brightness temperature of the Moon, which is a dominant systematic error. As a result, we successfully achieved a pointing accuracy of 3.3′. This is one order of magnitude smaller than an angular resolution of 36′. This level of accuracy competes with past achievements in other ground-based CMB experiments using observational data from the planets.

LiteBIRD is a planned JAXA-led cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode satellite experiment aiming for launch in the late 2020s, with a primary goal of detecting the imprint of primordial inflationary gravitational waves. Its current baseline focal-plane configuration includes 15 frequency bands between 40 and 402 GHz, fulfilling the mission requirements to detect the amplitude of gravitational waves with the total uncertainty on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, δr, down to δr < 0.001. A key aspect of this performance is accurate astrophysical component separation, and the ability to remove polarized thermal dust emission is particularly important. In this paper we note that the CMB frequency spectrum falls off nearly exponentially above 300 GHz relative to the thermal dust spectral energy distribution, and a relatively minor high frequency extension can therefore result in even lower uncertainties and better model reconstructions. Specifically, we compared the baseline design with five extended configurations, while varying the underlying dust modeling, in each of which the High-Frequency Telescope (HFT) frequency range was shifted logarithmically toward higher frequencies, with an upper cutoff ranging between 400 and 600 GHz. In each case, we measured the tensor-to-scalar ratio r uncertainty and bias using both parametric and minimum-variance component-separation algorithms. When the thermal dust sky model includes a spatially varying spectral index and temperature, we find that the statistical uncertainty on r after foreground cleaning may be reduced by as much as 30–50% by extending the upper limit of the frequency range from 400 to 600 GHz, with most of the improvement already gained at 500 GHz. We also note that a broader frequency range leads to higher residuals when fitting an incorrect dust model, but also it is easier to discriminate between models through higher χ2 sensitivity. Even in the case in which the fitting procedure does not correspond to the underlying dust model in the sky, and when the highest frequency data cannot be modeled with sufficient fidelity and must be excluded from the analysis, the uncertainty on r increases by only about 5% for a 500 GHz configuration compared to the baseline.

GroundBIRD is a ground-based telescope for measuring the polarization of cosmic microwave background radiation, and it is soon to be operational at the Teide Observatory. The GroundBIRD telescope employs Mizuguchi–Dragone dual reflectors and 161 kinetic inductance detectors coupled with single polarization antennas as photon detectors. We present the results of our optical simulation on the pointing direction, stray light response, and influence of the blackbody radiation from the baffle. We also find that the power of the baffle radiation incident on the detectors is reduced by 99.95% when corrugated feed horns are coupled to the detectors.

Abstract It has been pointed out that the spurious cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization signals caused by the absorption of the CMB monopole component due to the Galactic interstellar matter, called the CMB shadow, degrade the accuracy of detecting the CMB B-mode polarization signals imprinted by primordial gravitational waves. We have made a realistic estimation using simulated sky maps of how the CMB shadow affects forthcoming high-precision CMB B-mode experiments for the first time. The delta-map method, an internal template method taking into account the first-order spatial variation of foregrounds’ spectral parameters, is applied as a foreground-removal method. We show that if the CMB shadow effects are not taken into account in the foreground-removal process, future observations would lead to the false detection of the CMB B-mode polarization signals originating from primordial gravitational waves. We also show that the effect of the CMB shadow can be mitigated by our revised delta-map method to target the CMB B-mode polarization signals at the level of tensor-to-scalar ratio r = 0.001.

Radio absorptive materials (RAMs) are key elements for receivers in the millimeter-wave range. We previously established a method for production of RAM by using a 3D-printed mold. An advantage of this method is a wide range of choices for absorptive materials to be used. To take advantage of this flexibility, we added a range of absorptive materials to a base epoxy resin, STYCAST-2850FT, and examined the optical performance of the resultant RAM across a wide frequency range under cryogenic conditions. We found that adding a particular type of carbon fiber produced the best performance with a reflectance at 77 K estimated as 0.01%–3% over a frequency range of 20–300 GHz.

Controlling stray light at millimeter wavelengths requires special optical design and selection of absorptive materials that should be compatible with cryogenic operating environments. While a wide selection of absorptive materials exists, these typically exhibit high indices of refraction and reflect/scatter a significant fraction of light before absorption. For many lower index materials such as commercial microwave absorbers, their applications in cryogenic environments are challenging. In this paper, we present a new tool to control stray light: metamaterial microwave absorber tiles. These tiles comprise an outer metamaterial layer that approximates a lossy gradient index anti-reflection coating. They are fabricated via injection molding commercially available carbon-loaded polyurethane (25% by mass). The injection molding technology enables mass production at low cost. The design of these tiles is presented, along with thermal tests to 1 K. Room temperature optical measurements verify their control of reflectance to less than 1% up to angles of incidence, and control of wide angle scattering below 0.01%. The dielectric properties of the bulk carbon-loaded material used in the tiles is also measured at different temperatures, confirming that the material maintains similar dielectric properties down to 3 K.

A microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) is a cutting-edge superconducting detector, and its principle is based on a superconducting resonator circuit. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of the MKID is an important parameter because various MKID characterization parameters depend on it. In this paper, we propose a method to measure the Tc of the MKID by changing the applied power of the readout microwaves. A small fraction of the readout power is deposited on the MKID, and the number of quasiparticles in the MKID increases with this power. Furthermore, the quasiparticle lifetime decreases with the number of quasiparticles. Therefore, we can measure the relation between the quasiparticle lifetime and the detector response by rapidly varying the readout power. From this relation, we evaluate the intrinsic quasiparticle lifetime. This lifetime is theoretically modeled by Tc, the physical temperature of the MKID device, and other known parameters. We obtain Tc by comparing the measured lifetime with that acquired using the theoretical model. Using an MKID fabricated with aluminum, we demonstrate this method at a 0.3 K operation. The results are consistent with those obtained by Tc measured by monitoring the transmittance of the readout microwaves with the variation in the device temperature. We evaluate the degradation of the accuracy of the component separation between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foreground components caused by neglect of absorption of the CMB's monopole component by the galactic interstellar matter. The amplitude of the temperature anisotropy caused by the CMB shadow, due to dust components, is about 1 μK. This value is comparable to the required noise level necessary to probe non-Gaussianity studies with upcoming CMB experiments. In addition, the amplitude of the polarization caused by the CMB shadow due to dust is comparable to or larger than the rms value of the CMB B-mode polarization, imprinted by primordial gravitational waves. We show that applying a single-power-law model as the dust spectrum to observed multifrequency data introduces systematic errors, which are comparable to or larger than the required noise level for forthcoming CMB B-mode polarization experiments. Deducing the intrinsic spectrum of dust emission from the submillimeter wave band data reduces the systematic error to below the required noise level. However, this method requires dust temperature measurements with an accuracy of better than a few percent. We conclude that the CMB shadow due to dust must be considered in future CMB missions for achieving their targeted sensitivity. Our results will be important to detect the primordial CMB B-mode polarization, with the amplitude of the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r = 10-3....

We established a production method of a millimeter-wave absorber by using a 3D-printed mold. The mold has a periodic pyramid shape, and an absorptive material is filled into the mold. This shape reduces the surface reflection. The 3D-printed mold is made from a transparent material in the millimeter-wave range. Therefore, unmolding is not necessary. A significant benefit of this production method is easy prototyping with various shapes and various absorptive materials. We produced a test model and used a two-component epoxy encapsulant as the absorptive material. The test model achieved a low reflectance: ∼1% at 100 GHz. The absorber is sometimes maintained at a low temperature condition for cases in which superconducting detectors are used. Therefore, cryogenic performance is required in terms of a mechanical strength for the thermal cycles, an adhesive strength, and a sufficient thermal conductivity. We confirmed the test-model strength by immersing the model into a liquid-nitrogen bath.

Superconducting detectors are a modern technology applied in various fields. The microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) is one of cutting-edge superconducting detector. It is based on the principle of a superconducting resonator circuit. A radiation entering the MKID breaks the Cooper pairs in the superconducting resonator, and the intensity of the radiation is detected as a variation of the resonant condition. Therefore, calibration of the detector responsivity, i.e., the variation of the resonant phase with respect to the number of Cooper-pair breaks (quasiparticles), is important. We propose a method for responsivity calibration. Microwaves used for the detector readout locally raise the temperature in each resonator, which increases the number of quasiparticles. Since the magnitude of the temperature rise depends on the power of readout microwaves, the number of quasiparticles also depends on the power of microwaves. By changing the power of the readout microwaves, we simultaneously measure the phase difference and lifetime of quasiparticles. We calculate the number of quasiparticles from the measured lifetime and by using a theoretical formula. This measurement yields a relation between the phase response as a function of the number of quasiparticles. We demonstrate this responsivity calibration using the MKID maintained at 285mK. We also confirm consistency between the results obtained using this method and conventional calibration methods in terms of the accuracy.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background experiment being built on Cerro Toco in Chile, due to begin observations in the early 2020s. We describe the scientific goals of the experiment, motivate the design, and forecast its performance. SO will measure the temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background in six frequency bands centered at: 27, 39, 93, 145, 225 and 280 GHz. The initial configuration of SO will have three small-aperture 0.5-m telescopes and one large-aperture 6-m telescope, with a total of 60,000 cryogenic bolometers. Our key science goals are to characterize the primordial perturbations, measure the number of relativistic species and the mass of neutrinos, test for deviations from a cosmological constant, improve our understanding of galaxy evolution, and constrain the duration of reionization. The small aperture telescopes will target the largest angular scales observable from Chile, mapping ≈ 10% of the sky to a white noise level of 2 μK-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, to measure the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio,r, at a target level of σ(r)=0.003. The large aperture telescope will map ≈ 40% of the sky at arcminute angular resolution to an expected white noise level of 6 μK-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, overlapping with the majority of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope sky region and partially with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from thePlancksatellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The survey will also provide a legacy catalog of 16,000 galaxy clusters and more than 20,000 extragalactic sources.

The application of the Martin-Puplett type Fourier transform spectrometer to aperture synthesis is considered. The configuration of the mirrors and beam splitters and the fundamental mathematical elements of the system are summarized. We show that the system canmeasure spectrally resolved spatial distribution of the Stokes parameters of sources as interferedsignals. An original Martin-Puplett type Fourier transform spectrometer that can be applied toaperture synthesis in mm and sub-mm wave bands has been constructed. The preliminary resultsof our laboratory experiments are reported.

Abstract
Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. In May 2019, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, JAXA, selected LiteBIRD as the strategic large mission No. 2.

The cosmic inflation is a leading hypothesis to generate the BIg-Bang, super high density and super hot era at the early stage of the universe. Its accelerated expansion of space-time metric generated the primordial gravitational waves as well as the Big-Bang. Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB), in particular its asymmetric component of polarization patterns "B-mode", is the smoking gun evidence for the primordial gravitational waves. This primordial B-mode has not been observed yet. We developed a CMB telescope "GroundBIRD" which aims for the primordial B-mode. This telescope implements unique technologies: high-speed rotating scan modulation, cold optics, and cutting-edge superconducting detector. This grant focused on developments for systems for high-speed scan and cold optics. We established the technology to operate superconducting detectors on such an unique operation condition.

We have devoted our research activities to developing high accuracy component separation scheme which is able to separate cosmic microwave background radiation signal and foreground emission components signals originated from interstellar matter in our Galaxy from observed polarization data in microwave bands. We have completed a new original component separation scheme based on hierarchical bayesian methods. We have also performed studies which lead to deepening of our physical understandings of polarization microwave emission from the Galactic interstellar matter. One of these is all sky far infrared diffuse light map making from the all sky survey data obtained by the Japanese infrared satellite " AKARI". The PC cluster machine bought by this financial support has played crucial role to complete the first version of the "AKARI" far infrared all sky maps within the research period of this budget.

Aim of our researches were development of a new type of millimeter and submillimeter interferometer which has much larger bandwidth, much higher sensitivity and much wider field of view compared with usually used interferometer in this wavebands. We have realized this type of interferometer by applying Martin-Puplett type Fourier transform spectrometer to aperture synthesis system. This is an concrete realization of the Michelson type bolometeric interferometer. Theoretical fundamentals were summarized in the paper published in Applied Optics. The results of laboratory experiments which had succeeded in obtaining source images in extremely broad band of 0.1THz-1.05THz in every 0.01THz simuletaneously was summarized in a paper which was submitted to Applied Optics. We have installed our instruments in Nobeyama Radio Observatory in where atmospheric condition is suited to millimeter and submillimeter observations and infrastructures for performing experiments are well developed. We have succeeded in observations of Sun in 0.1THz-0.36THz with our instrument. This is an extremely wide bandwidth compared with usual interferometer in this wavebands that is at most a few 0.01THz. PC control systems were developed and accuracies of pointing and guiding of astronomical objects were dramatically improved. Because of this improvement, we have recently succeeded in observations of Moon. We developed bolometer detectors which has a higher sensitivity than possible highest sensitivity of receiver used in usual interferometer. By installing this detector on our instrument, we have concluded that the sensitivity of our instrument is able to increase dramatically by reducing the noise originated from inside of our instruments by cooling down the whole instrument. The way of extending FOV of interferometer by applying detector array to our instruments were theoretically considered and proposed.

Development of submillimeter-wave SIS photon detector is performed using superconducting niobium junctions to realize wide-field and wide-bandwidth observations in submillimeter-wave. We have also made 3-color bolometer system operating at 350,650 and 850 GHz to start submilllimeter-wave continuum observations with ASTE (Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment) submillimeter telescope. In the first year of development, we have successfully fabricated low leakage, less than 10 pA, tunnel junction with 1kA/cm2 current density by optimizing the fabrication conditions. In the next year we have observed submillimeter-wave response at 440 GHz and 650 GHz using 4 micron and 3 micron diameter junctions, respectively. In the last year, we have evaluated the detector performance, such as leakage current, current noise, voltage responsivity, quantum efficiency, linearity, time constant and beam pattern with optics. NEP shows 10(-16)W/sqrt(Hz). The measured performance is superior to submillimeter-wave bolometers. The fabrication yield is improve to be 98% for single junctions and 78% for detector elements. The 3-color bolometer system is developed to make early continuum observations with ASTE telescope and to evaluate the antenna performance. Cryostat for 0.3 K operations is developed to realize remotely operable low vibration cryogenics. We have started scientific observing runs with the bolometric receivers.

We have set up a new laboratory for development of mm-submm wave astronomical instruments aiming to measure Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy and polarization in astronomical institute at Tohoku University. The application of the Martin & Puplett type Fourier transform spectrometer to aperture synthesis was considered. An original mutual correlation type Martin & Puplett Fourier transform spectrometer was designed and developed. The instrument was designed to be compact as possible as we can, that is minimizing the light path length and the size etc. The development of this instrument was completed within 1999 budget year. Shibata and Hattori performed fundamental experiments using this instrument in the laboratory during 2000 budget year. While we were performing the experiments, we have theoretically shown that the angular distribution of the 4 Stokes parameters on the sky can be measured for wide band mm-submm waves with this instrument. In the laboratory experiments, we have shown that our instrument is actually able to measure the 4 Stokes parameters as interference signals. The developments of the mm-submm wave detectors were performed mainly in Advanced Technology Center at National Astronomical Observatory of Japan lead by Matsuo. Bolometer detectors for astronomical observations were developed and performance verifications were done. The development and performance verifications of the bolometer detector for bright sources were completed with 2000 budget year. The development of the high sensitivity bolometer detector for faint sources was started at 2000. The developments of the SIS direct submm detector was also performed. We have at the first time shown experimentally that the SIS direct detector achieves extremely low noise level of NEP=10^<-18>W/√<Hz>. The special antenna for efficient coupling between the submm waves and the SIS direct detector was designed. The fundamental designs for development of array of SIS direct detectors were also done.

This study investigates methods to determine the cosmological parameters, particularly cosmological constant using gravitational lensing. The following are results of the study. 1. The distribution of angular separation between images of lensed quasar can be used to put the upper bound for the cosmological constant. We examined the magnification bias which plays an important role in this study and obtained more accurate estimation for this. Our result shows that the existence of the cosmological constant cannot be denied by the presently available observations. 2. The number of giant luminous arcs in clusters of galaxies is unexpectedly large. We examined this problem and found that the presence of the cosmological constant increase the expected number of arcs. 3. We showed that the observation of Einstein rings using large telescope such as SUBARU may impose a severe constraint on the cosmological constant. 4. We studied the method to estimate the mass distribution of cluster of galaxies using weak shear field created by coherent distortion of background galaxies and applied the method to Q0957+561 and PG1115+080 to obtain the constraint on the Hubble parameter.
