More than one diachronic corpus has shown that the Nominative-Genitive Conversion (NGC) in Japanese, which might appear to be a free alternation in adnominal clauses, has declined its frequency in the last 100 years or so (Nambu, 2014; Ogawa, 2016). Harada (1971, 1976) also identified two dialects roughly corresponding to two different age groups at the time; NCG in some specific syntactic environments was not acceptable for the Tokyo dialect speakers in their twenties, although it was acceptable for those in their forties. Primarily based on Kim's (2008) observations, Miyagawa (2011) proposes that synchronically, the more stative predicates are more likely to accept NGC. With these three previous analyses as backgrounds, this study administered an experiment of introspective judgments to 300 participants from three different age groups ranging from 74 to 20 years old. We discovered the fact that high stativity of an adnominal clause renders its Genitive subject more acceptable, and that younger participants are less likely to accept its Genitive subject. These two results enable us to conclude that the diachronic corpus investigation made by Ogawa (2016) is correct in that the restriction on NGC has been getting stronger and stronger and language change in this area is still in progress for the last 40 years. The generalization that more stative (or less eventive) predicates are more likely to accept NGC is to be attributed to the proposed hypothesis that more stative predicates need a smaller syntactic structure and that unlike the syntactic size of an adnominal clause with a Nominative subject, which is uniformly CP, the syntactic size of an adnominal clause with a Genitive subject has been shrinking from CP to VP/AP in the last 100 years or so.

Japanese V-V compounds have two structures of head-head and complement-head, and both types show atransitivity, where the internal argument(s) of a transitive or ditransitive verb are not realized. There are two independent reasons for atransitivity. One is the clause structure where the internal argument is not licensed by a verb but by a functional head, in accordance with the recent constructionist hypothesis. The other is auxiliation, a process in which a lexical verb is reanalyzed as an auxiliary. This insight roots in traditional grammar of Japanese, and we translate the insight in current theoretical terms. Depending on the subtype of compound, head-head compounds do or do not show the harmony of transitivity between the two items of the compound, and we offer an analysis of it in terms of the auxiliation of the second verb of the compound.

In this article, focusing on the dative alternation with the Give Verbs and Verbs of Future Having, we propose (i) that the V-NP-PP construction and the double object construction (DOC) share the same underlying structure, which involves a small clause CP headed by the invisible verb HAVE, which is an amalgamation of the invisible copula BE and the invisible adposition TO, and (ii) that the former is derived from the latter, by the excorporation of TO out of HAVE, the C-to-V incorporation, and the A-movement of the Theme NP across the CP boundary. We argue that every movement across a CP-boundary is constrained by the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC), from which a syntactic solution is given to the question why certain double object verbs lack the V-NP-PP variant. It is argued that the legitimate derivation of the V-NP-PP variant from the DOC is subject to the PIC, since the C-to-V in-corporation, which is independently constrained by the temporal equivalence condition, enables movement to the matrix Spec of the matrix non-phase head V, which is otherwise inapplicable.

The Subject Raising (SR) in Japanese is an A-movement across a CP-boundary. It remains unclear why such a movement is possible without violating the Phase Impenetrability Condition. To answer this question, it is proposed in this article that the head of the embedded CP in the SR construction undergoes incorporation to the selecting V. It is argued that this proposal not only solves the above mentioned problem but also account for (i) the otherwise systematic locality effects on A-movement in Japanese, (ii) the otherwise unexplained behavior of the indeterminate pronoun in the embedded subject position, and (iii) the fact that the embedded clause cannot have a temporal reference independent of the matrix clause.

Many victims occurred by the Great East Japan earthquake, and most of them became the political weak. In our research project, we examined the possibility of the e-democracy from their viewpoint. And we paid attention about e-voting to facilitate their vote participation. There is not the local government carrying out election by the e-voting system now. However, We understood that many people permitted the use of the electronic voting system from a survey of public opinion poll that we made in Fukushima. And Our questionnaire survey for the EMB (election management body) of all Japanese cities made clear that they was careful about enforcement of the e-voting. We must solve concern of the EMB on promoting the ICT use in the election.

In view of the traditional observation that English is a noun-oriented language, analyses were made of English expressions that are syntactically composed with some nominal as head element in syntactic projections. Through corpus-based investigations, some new findings were made that the typical noun-oriented expressions of English syntax are characterized, not by nominalizations of verbs or adjectives, but by complex noun phrase structures that are made up of true (non-derived) nouns as head and relative clauses that follow them. The latter pattern is said to have a function of conveying propositional contents in noun-oriented syntactic structures.

In the academic year of 2005, the project started by integrating the knowledge the co-researchers had concerning the difference and the contrast observed in the positioning of clauses in Japanese and English. At the same time, the designated researchers looked for useful knowledge in linguistic literature that is related to the way Japanese and English is structured in combining a preceding clause and a following clause in order to express a semantic relation of event sequence. Also, the researchers collected relevant Japanese and English data from newspapers, magazines, etc. In 2005, the project continued through the assistance by graduate students who browsed in electronic corpora to collect data that are revealing in characterizing the correspondence between clause juxtaposition in Japanese and clause structuring in English. The researchers analyzed the collected data and categorizing them into some syntactic and semantic patterns In 2007, Hajime Fukuchi, the chief investigator for the project published an interim report in the Rising Generation under the title of "English Composition Seen from English Linguistics." The findings we have made so far can be summarized as follows. The semantic relations that are expressed in compound clause structure in Japanese can be can be conveyed in English through subordinate clause structures like (1) a main clause followed by a (typically, present) participial clause; (2) a main clause that is followed by a (semantically some adverbial) infinitival clause; (3) a main clause that is followed by a clause final relative clause; (4) a main clause that is followed by an adverbial subordinate clause that is introduced by when, as, etc.; (5) a prepositional phrase headed by to, with, etc. that functions as an adverbial adjunct. We arrived at a conclusion that these five corresponding syntactic patterns seem to reveal fundamental contrastive characteristics that have been made clear in linguistic literature.

    動詞の助動詞化、形容詞の前置詞化など、語彙範疇が通時的に機能範疇に変化した過程を、コーパスおよび古典の文献を用いて調査し、その原因を分析する。広義には「文法化研究」に属する研究だが、その通時的変化がなぜそのような過程で起こるかの理由を統語構造に求める点で、史的統語論研究の中に位置づけられる。
