    The aim of this paper is to explain case alternations on causees, illustrated in (1), which correlate with semantic alternations: the dative-marked causee is construed as being more volitional than and less affected than the accusative one:(1) John-ga Tom-o/ni hasir-ase-ta. John-NOM Tom-ACC/DAT run-CAUS-PAST 'John made /had Tom run'.I adopt Role and Reference Grammar [RRG] (Van Valin and LaPolla 1997) as a framework which analyzes causative constructions such as (1). It classifies two-place verbs, depending on whether they have one or two macroroles (actor and undergoer). My proposal is that the complex verb comprising of the causative suffix -ase- and hasir- 'run' underspecifies the number of macroroles which it takes. In other words, (1) may take one or two macroroles, depending on its relative transitivity: the more affected the causee is, the more transitive (1) becomes and is more likely to take two macroroles, while the less affected the causee is, the less transitive (1) becomes and is more likely to take only one macrorole (actor). In the latter case, the causee receives non-macrorole status and takes dative case, the default case marker for non-macrorole arguments (Silverstein 1993). This analysis extends with no modification to analogous causative constructions in other languages and simple verb constructions and potential constructions in Japanese which embed transitive verbs.

    今年度は、研究実施計画にあげた2つのトピック、(1)研究書や公刊された論文に基づく関連データの収集、(2)文法理論の検討、に沿って研究を進めた。他の作業((3)内外の学会での研究成果の発表、(4)研究計画のリビュー)については、研究の進捗状況を考慮して見合わせた。 まず、(1)については、様々な語族に属する言語の句構造木の形状に関連するデータ(例:代名詞同一指示、かき混ぜの有無、項機能が形態論により同定されるか、統語論において同定されるか)を、研究文献から収集し、句構造木の形状を決定する3つの主要なパラメーター、(1)階層的⇔非階層的、(2)従属部マーキング⇔主要部マーキング、(3)内心構造⇔外心構造、に基づいて、言語を分類した。その結果、例えば、オーストラリア原住民語に属するウォルビリ語は、非階層的・主要部マーキング・外心構造として分類され、一方、バントゥー諸語の多く(例:チチェワ語、セソト語)は階層的・主要部マーキング・外心構造として分類される。ただし、数は多くはないものの、2つの句構造木の形状が共存する言語が存在することが、文献調査の過程で明らかになった。 (2)については、ミニマリスト・プログラム、主要部駆動句構造文法、一般化句構造文法について句構造木の取り扱いを中心に検討したが、(1)〜(3)のパラメーターが生みだす句構造木のヴァリエーションを収容できる文法理論として、語彙機能文法が最も柔軟なモデルであることが判明した。

    今年度は、研究実施計画にあげた3つのトピック、(1)使役構文の格フレーム、(2)心理動詞構文の格フレーム、交替、(3)所有者上昇構文の格フレーム、(4)抽象的格と形態的格の対応関係の解明、に沿って研究を進めた。 まず、(1)については、非能格自動詞を埋めこんだ使役構文の格フレームに注目し、被使役者上の格交替(対格⇔与格)を他動性の高低に帰着させる分析を、「不完全指定」概念を援用して提案し、その提案を他言語の類似した使役構文や関連する他の構文の格交替に拡大した。その成果は、『言語研究』(日本言語学会)の116号に掲載予定である。また、 続いて、(2)については、東京外語大学(アジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所)の研究プロジェクト「統語類型論における他動性と能格性に関する諸問題」での研究成果に基づく論文を執筆し、来年中に、くろしお出版から刊行される研究書の1章として出版される予定である。 (3)については、昨年10月末に、米国テキサス州で開催されたアメリカ西部言語学会で論文を口頭発表し、所有者上昇構文と関連する被害受身構文を統一的に分析した論文が、学会論文集に掲載される予定である。なお、この論文を拡大・改訂した論文を海外の学術雑誌に投稿し、現在審査中である。 最後に、(3)については、一昨年の11月に関西言語学会(於奈良女子大学)で発表した口頭発表を改訂した論文を、昨年9月にドイツの学会で口頭発表し、学会の論文集に掲載予定である。学会での発表後、言語類型論に関する膨大なデータベースをもつコンスタンツ大学や他大学の研究者から有意義なフィードバックを受けた。

  1. A Typological Study of Voice in the World's Languages

    本プロジェクトでは、諸言語に見られる態（voice）のなかで、これまで研究対象となりにくかった構文に焦点をあてて通言語学的な視点から研究をすすめることで、言語の類型論的研究に新しい観点を確立することを目的とする。態の研究においては、ヨーロッパ言語に見られる「受動態」等に関するものが一般的である。しかしオーストロネシア諸語、マヤ諸語、バントゥ諸語などにおいて報告のある「適用態」については、系統の異なる言語間での比較がこれまでなされてこなかった。本プロジェクトでは、「適用態」の存在が報告されている言語、また類似の現象が見られる言語の専門家が集まり具体例を検討することで、「適用態」の定義そのものの見直し、一般的性格の記述、態の研究全体のおける位置づけを行う。また、その成果を人間の認知活動や、諸言語の歴史的変化のメカニズムといった、よりひろい文脈の中で検討することを目的とする。
