Abstract We report a theoretical study of electronic excitation in CH3Cl and CF3Cl by electron impact. Momentum-transfer-dependent generalized oscillator strengths (GOSs) are calculated for transitions to low-lying excited singlet-states at the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles level. The influence of molecular vibration is taken into account in the calculation. The theoretical results show reasonable overall agreement with experimental data reported in the literature. The shapes of the GOS profiles reveal that the 1 1E state of CH3Cl has a valence-Rydberg mixed nature, while that of CF3Cl is of a predominant C–Cl antibonding character. A comparison with the experimental GOSs of CH3Cl provides unambiguous evidence that the 3pe state is lower in energy than the 3pa1 state. Optical oscillator strengths are also calculated and comparison is made with available experimental and other theoretical results.

X-ray and electron scattering experiments are powerful tools for investigating the electronic structures of molecules. The momentum transfer dependence of the scattering cross sections provides valuable information about the shape of molecular orbitals, correlated motion of electrons, vibronic effects on electronic excitations and so on. In this article, recent developments in x-ray and electron scattering studies on electronic structures and electronic excitation dynamics of molecules are reviewed. In particular, we focus on the following three topics. The first topic is an x-ray scattering study on electron correlation. Total (elastic+inelastic) x-ray scattering intensity as well as inelastic scattering intensity are related to electron pair distribution function through Fourier transformation, and hence comparisons between observed and calculated x-ray scattering intensities allow us to make a critical assessment of whether or not electron correlation is properly taken into account in the theoretical wave function. The second topic is interference effects on electron momentum profiles studied using (e, 2e) electron momentum spectroscopy. An analysis of the measured electron momentum densities for the F 2p nonbonding orbitals of CF4 has clearly shown the presence of oscillatory structure having information about the orientation in space of the constituent F 2p atomic orbitals. The third topic is electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) studies of vibronic effects on electronic excitations in molecules. Examining the momentum transfer dependence of the EELS cross section makes it possible to see coupling between electronic states. By using this method we have revealed the roles of vibronic coupling in some valence-shell electronic excitations in CF4 and CO2.

Through resent advances in laser technology, it has become feasible to create strong laser field, which is comparable with the electric field that a bound electron feels in matter, and various kinds of researches regarding ultrafast molecular dynamic in such strong laser field has been activated. The objective of this project is to develop laser-assisted electron momentum spectroscopy that is expected to provide more complete understanding of interaction between strong laser filed and matter. For this purpose, many theoretical calculations as well as development of several experimental techniques have been attempted. As a result, this project has successfully provided concrete experimental conditions and guidelines for improvements in experimental techniques, required to realize laser-assisted electron momentum spectroscopy in the near future.

One might expect that when an electron collides with a molecule, the probability of occurring a collision and the physical content of the collision must be largely dependent upon the angle between the incident electron beam axis and the molecular axis as well as upon the impact parameter. The objective of this project has been to open up a new research area to investigate such stereodynamics of electron-molecule collision. For this purpose, a new experimental technique, which measures the differential cross section of electron scattering as a function of spatial orientation of the target molecule and momentum transfer, has been developed. As a result, this project has successfully and for the first time found effects of stereodynamics on the cross section, which is much more substantial than supposed.

The aim of this project is to develop time-resolved electron momentum spectroscopy. It is a unique means that allows one to see the change of electron motion in transient species, which is the driving force behind any chemical reactions. While there remains an ample room for improving experimental qualities, we have successfully made the first observation of the change of electron motion during chemical reactions, such as the three-body photodissociation dynamics of the acetone molecule at 195 nm.

Various kinds of molecular properties such as reactivity are governed by molecular orbital pattern of a specific valence electron. The purpose of this project is to develop a method for imaging such molecular orbital pattern in momentum space. In order to realize this project, we have constructed an apparatus that aims to detect in triple coincidence the two outgoing electrons and the fragment ion produced by electron Compton scattering and to measure vector correlations among the three charged particles. The apparatus has been subsequently employed for dissociative ionization processes of the H_2 and O_2 molecules. Although the experimental results suffer from rather large statistical uncertainties, they are found to fulfill our expectations. For instance, the 2_<Sδ_g> electron orbital of the H_2 molecule has been observed in momentum space as what is elongated in the direction perpendicular to the molecular axis, which is well known to be stretched along the molecular axis in position space. This observation is due entirely to nature of Fourier transform. On the other hand, for the 2_<Pδ_u> orbital of the molecule, the p-type orbital nature, which lobes and a nodal plane lie in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the molecular axis respectively, has been clearly observed. In this way, we have successfully demonstrated for the first time that looking at molecular orbitals in the three dimensional form is totally possible. The achievements of this project has been highly evaluated as pioneering work for molecular orbital imaging, opening the door for detailed studies on bound electronic wave functions of molecules. This work has been invited to a broad range of international and domestic conferences (40 invited talks) and The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) Award for Creative Work has been provided to the head investigator in 2008 March.

Thanks to the present grant, we have constructed a high-sensitive x-ray spectrometer, developed a method to obtain lifetime-broadening-free XANES spectra, and carried out the following spectroscopic studies. 1. Construction of an x-ray spectrometer equipped with a two-dimensional detector and five dispersing analyzer crystal. 2. We have succeeded in obtaining weak XANES spectra excited under pre-resonantt conditions owing to the high-sensitive spectrometer described above. Subsequently, we have shown that lifetime-broadening-free XANES spectra can be obtained by numerically analyzing those spectra by an equation based on Kramers-Heisenberg equation. 3. Based on 1 and 2, we have carried out the following studies. (1) Observation of spin-selective XANES spectra of MnO and other manganese compounds. (2) Studies on orbital- and spin-ordering of LaMnO3 by spin-selective, polarization XANES spectra. (3) Observation of 2p-4f quadrupole transitions of Dy and Ho compounds. Through the last three decades of studies of binary (e,2e) spectroscopy or electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS), it has been demonstrated that the ionization reaction near the Bethe ridge is a sensitive probe for electronic structure and electron correlation. In particular, the ability to look at individual molecular orbitals in momentum space is the remarkable feature of this technique. However, EMS has not yet reached the stage of full use of its ability for intensive investigation on electronic structure of molecules. The reason for this may have been twofold; (1) a more complete knowledge of the binary (e,2e) reaction mechanism is an ever-increasing necessity as sophistication of experiments increases, and (2) the present EMS experiments measure averages over all orientations of gaseous molecules, resulting in enormous loss of information on electronic structure, anisotropy of the target wavefunction in particular. However, small cross section involved in the binary (e,2e) reaction has hindered one from developing EMS satisfactorily. Under these circumstances, we have constructed an electron-electron-fragment ion triple coincidence spectrometer. The spectrometer features remarkably high sensitivity for the two outgoing electrons by simultaneous detection in energy and momentum, and further it enables us to carry out (e,2e) experiments with fixed-in-space molecules based on their axial recoil fragmentation. By taking advantage of multichannel detection in. the spectrometer, we have successfully applied it to studies on collision dynamics of ionization excitation processes of the hydrogen molecule and directional momentum densities of the oxygen molecule. These are the first observation of molecular frame (e,2e) cross sections.

Optical properties such as absorption coefficient and reflectivity are no only one of the most fundamental properties of matters but also are related to other properties like dielectric constants and van der Waals force. In particular, interactions of the material with x-rays and charged particles are also described by optical data, as long as they are known over wide energy range. Because of various experimental difficulties however, measurements of optical constants in the vacuum-uv and soft x-ray region are scarce, and are practically nonexistence about liquids. In this project an attempt is made to establish a new spectroscopic method that makes it possible to obtain spectra of various liquids over wide energy region by the use of inelastic scattering of hard x-rays. A new spectrometer which features versatility has been constructed with the present grant-in-aid, and it was sent to synchrotron radiation facilities (Photon Factory at Tsukuba and National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven, U.S.A.). Measurements were carried out there and we have succeeded in obtaining inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of several liquids including water between 0 and 200 eV, which can be transformed to optical constants in the vacuum uv region. The data on water makes a basis of radiation chemistry, and a review paper has been written to the Journal of Japanese Radiation Chemistry Society. In addition, x-ray structure factor can also be deduced from momentum-transfer dependence of inelastic x-ray scattering spectra, which is closely related with electron correlation. The results have been analyzed in terms of the configuration interaction method as well as newly developed coupled cluster method.
