    We report on recent developments that enable megahertz hard X-ray phase contrast imaging (MHz XPCI) experiments at the Single Particles, Clusters, and Biomolecules and Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (SPB/SFX) instrument of the European XFEL facility (EuXFEL). We describe the technical implementation of the key components, including an MHz fast camera and a modular indirect X-ray microscope system based on fast scintillators coupled through a high-resolution optical microscope, which enable full-field X-ray microscopy with phase contrast of fast and irreversible phenomena. The image quality for MHz XPCI data showed significant improvement compared with a pilot demonstration of the technique using parallel beam illumination, which also allows access to up to 24 keV photon energies at the SPB/SFX instrument of the EuXFEL. With these developments, MHz XPCI was implemented as a new method offered for a broad user community (academic and industrial) and is accessible via standard user proposals. Furthermore, intra-train pulse diagnostics with a high few-micrometre spatial resolution and recording up to 128 images of consecutive pulses in a train at up to 1.1 MHz repetition rate is available upstream of the instrument. Together with the diagnostic camera upstream of the instrument and the MHz XPCI setup at the SPB/SFX instrument, simultaneous two-plane measurements for future beam studies and feedback for machine parameter tuning are now possible.

    Abstract The short wavelength of X-rays makes them good for high-resolution imaging system applying for the fields from medicine to industry. The thin-film grating required for X-ray imaging can be created using printing, which is a cost-effective method for large-area imaging. Since the grating resolution (line/space, L/S) influences the imaging resolution, it is crucial to enhance L/S through printing methods. In this study, thin-film gratings were fabricated from silver nanoparticles using letterpress inversion printing, achieving a maximum L/S grating resolution of 1 μm/1 μm (the highest resolution achieved through printing). Subsequently, the cross-section of a pine needle was successfully imaged.

    Abstract The design and evaluation experiments of a multibeam X-ray tomography optical system that can be used with synchrotron radiation from sources with a narrow energy bandwidth, i.e. undulator sources, are reported. It consists of silicon single crystals that diffract the incident X-rays to 27 beams, which are used to image a sample. The energy of the beams was aligned with an accuracy sufficient for use at typical undulator beamlines. Projection images of a test sample were collected and successfully reconstructed, showing the feasibility of a high-speed X-ray tomography instrument based on the optical system.

    Abstract We report on an application of 4D synchrotron radiation microtomography with a temporal resolution of 10 ms. Our device that can compresses a sample while rotating it at high speed made it possible for the first time to capture the moment of a local fracture inside a porous composite material. It was visualized that the fracture was caused by local tensile shear stress, not local compressive stress.

    Abstract A proof-of-concept experiment for sub-millisecond temporal and 10 μm order spatial resolution 4D X-ray tomography imaging using a multibeam X-ray imaging system is reported. The 3D structure of a tungsten wire during mechanical deformation was reconstructed using a super-compressed sensing-based algorithm from 28 projection images acquired simultaneously with a temporal resolution of 0.5 ms. The multibeam imaging system does not require rotation of the sample, X-ray source or detector. The experiment demonstrates the potential for improving the time resolution in observing non-repeatable dynamic phenomena, such as those occurring in fluids, living beings, or material fractures.

    Abstract A multi-beam X-ray optical system using a σ-polarization diffraction geometry is proposed and its potential for high-speed tomography using synchrotron radiation is experimentally evaluated. Projection images of a sample are obtained simultaneously from different directions with X-ray beams generated by diffraction of a white synchrotron radiation beam at silicon single crystals. This makes it possible to record a tomographic dataset without rotation of the sample or X-ray source. Data sets of two samples obtained in a proof-of-principle experiment with an exposure time of 1 ms were successfully reconstructed using an advanced compressed-sensing algorithm.

    Abstract Notwithstanding the various uses of rubber, the fracture mechanism of filler-reinforced rubber remains unclear. This study used four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) involving monochromatic synchrotron X-rays to examine the cavitation within silica-reinforced rubber quantitatively and systematically. The results suggested a threshold value of silica content for the cavitation morphology. Macroscopic fractures, such as those developed by void formation, occurred below the threshold value of silica content. Above this threshold, the density of rubber decreased but macroscopic voids rarely occurred. The lower-density rubber area in the high-silica-content rubber was reversible at the effective pixel size for 4D-CT. These results suggest that the growth of the damage points to macrosized voids could be stopped by the formation of a network of rigid polymer layers. This study allows the elucidation of the reinforcing mechanism and the cavitation morphology of filler-reinforced rubber.

    Abstract A setup for fast multi-energy X-ray tomography is reported. Projection images of a sample using X-ray beams with energies below and above an absorption edge of an element of interest were recorded simultaneously with a multi-beam detector. The sample was rotated to obtain a data set for tomography.     <title>Abstract</title>X-ray absorption of breast cancers and surrounding healthy tissue can be very similar, a situation that sometimes leads to missed cancers or false-positive diagnoses. To increase the accuracy of mammography and breast tomosynthesis, we describe dynamic X-ray elastography using a novel pulsed X-ray source. This new imaging modality provides both absorption and mechanical properties of the imaged material. We use a small acoustic speaker to vibrate the sample while a synchronously pulsed cold cathode X-ray source images the mechanical deformation. Using these stroboscopic images, we derive two-dimensional stiffness maps of the sample in addition to the conventional X-ray image. In a breast phantom composed of ZrO2 powder embedded in gel, dynamic elastography derived stiffness maps were able to discriminate a hard inclusion from surrounding material with a contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 4.5. The CNR on the corresponding absorption image was 1.1. This demonstrates the feasibility of dynamic X-ray elastography with a synchronously pulsed X-ray source.

    X-ray radiographic imaging technique has found applications in various fields. However, it is not enough to get clear X-ray images of samples with low absorbance, such as biological soft tissues. To resolve this problem, we proposed a method using an X-ray Talbot interferometer of X-ray phase imaging. In this X-ray Talbot interferometer, X-ray gratings were required to have a fine, high accuracy, high aspect ratio structure. Then, we have developed and succeeded high aspect ratio X-ray gratings with a pitch of 5.3 μm and a height of 30 μm using X-ray lithography technique. We discuss that the X-ray gratings having a large effective area in order to obtain imaging size of practical use in medical application. In currently study, we have fabricated the X-ray gratings with a large effective area of 60 mm×60 mm. And, we conducted X-ray phase tomography of mouse at the chest and abdominal using X-ray Talbot interferometer. As a result, we successfully observed soft tissues and high density tissues. With the aim of broadening a field of view, we try to fabricate X-ray gratings that have a pitch of below 5.3 μm and larger area of 100 mm square. This result suggests that X-ray Talbot interferometer is a novel and simple method for phase sensitive X-ray radiography.

    A new method, a phase-sensitive method, using modulation of the crystal-truncation-rod (CTR) scattering under the excitation of a Bragg reflection was applied to investigate mesoscopic strain fields (up to several tens of nm) under the SiO_2/Si interface. Si wafers covered with oxide layers formed by Kr/O_2 plasma oxidation and thermal oxidation processes were used as samples, and it was shown that the sign of the strain field under the Kr/O_2 plasma oxide layer a few nanometer thick was different from those under the thermal oxide layers very near to the interface.

    We performed feasibility study on fabrication of high-aspect-ratio structured scintillator, which enables us to realize a high-sensitivity and high-spatial resolution X-ray imaging detector for high-energy hard X-rays. We used single crystalline Ce:Gd3Al2Ga3O12 (GAGG) scintillator with a short decay time and explored four microfabrication techniques (argon ion milling with high-aspect-ratio mask, wet etching, casting to high-melting-point mold, and ultra-centrifugal filling) and found the ultra-centrifugal filling technique is the most promising in the four techniques.

    There are many unknown high-speed phenomenon in non-equilibrium systems. In this research, we developed millisecond-order X-ray tomography (including four-dimensional X-ray tomography) on the basis of microsecond-order X-ray imaging using an X-ray grating interferometer, which enables us to realize high-sensitive X-ray phase-contrast imaging, and a white synchrotron X-ray beam. It is expected that this tomographic technique will be broadly used for versatile purposes in many fields including basic and application research on soft materials biomimetics.

    This study aims to observe partial melting of rocks by x-ray phase-contrast computed tomography (CT) imaging. It is difficult to distinguish host minerals and partial melts by the x-ray absorption imaging, which is a non-destructive imaging method commonly used in various fields of research, industry, and medicine, because of the small difference in the absorption coefficient. X-ray phase-contrast imaging can distinguish them because the difference in the phase shift is larger. We have conducted x-ray CT imaging experiments of natural rock samples and obtained images of absorption, phase shift, and visibility contrasts. Grain boundaries of crystals are well observed in visibility images. It is suggested that using visibility images for in-situ observation of partial melting of rocks may be useful.

    We proposed chemical fluid deposition (CFD) technique by using supercritical CO2 fluids and are establishing technique to enable to fill Gd materials into high-aspect ratio trench structures for neutron phase imaging. In this research, we try to develop the technique that impregnation of Gd2O3 nanocrystals into the trench to form nanocrystalline supralattice structures by synthesizing supercritical CO2 dispersed Gd2O3 nanocrystals. We deployed 3 step synthesis to obtain those supercritical CO2 dispersed Gd2O3 nanocrystals. First, Gd(III)oleate was synthesized in aqua and then, oleic-acid modified Gd2O3 nanocrystals was synthesized from Gd(III)oleate in Tri-n-octylamine by solvothermal method. Finally, hexafluoroacetylacetone(hfac) modified Gd2O3 nanocrsytals that can be dispersed in supercritical CO2 were obtained by using ligand exchange. Currently, we are developing CFD method that enables to deposit the nanocrystals by decreasing dispersibility with local cooling on substrates.

    The aim of this project is to improve the sensitivity of X-ray grating interferometry by the improvement of the gratings used in the interferometry and the development of novel optical systems. The improvement of the gratings was realized by the development of metallic glass imprinting technique, and 9 μm-pitch Gd-based and 3-μm pitch Pt-based metallic glass gratings were successfully fabricated. In addition, we developed two novel optical systems: X-ray phase elastography and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering imaging. For the former, we clarified the theoretical background of the effect of unresolvable edges on the images obtained in the interferometry and performed a preliminary experiment at SPring-8. For the latter, we performed experiments of grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering imaging at SPring-8 and successfully obtained contrast due to a line and space pattern with a depth of 10 nm, which is difficult to be resolved in a conventional setup.

    We improved a pulsed neutron imaging method using energy analysis and promoted its applications. First, we improved a data analysis code and applied it to analyze martensite phase of quenched steels, a Japanese sword and a new material, and could develop a method to measure hardness non-destructively. CT methods were examined. A hydrogen storage material could be also studied. An imaging method of small angle scattering was developed. Quantitative analysis of a resonance absorption spectrum became feasible. Magnetic field was measured with good accuracy and the method was applied to a magnetic foil. Furthermore, we succeeded in phase contrast measurements using pulsed neutrons firstly in the world. A high counting rate detector and a camera type detector with short channel width of time of flight measurement were successfully manufactured.

    Imprinting method for fabricating large-area and high aspect ratio pattern was established for Pd-based metallic glass (MG) with high formability and for Gd-based MG with low formability. Sufficient depth of imprinting can be obtained even under the isothermal heating condition at supercooled liquid region for Pd-based MG, while the high-rate isochronal heating condition above crystallization temperature was needed for Gd-based MG. By using imprinting with optimized conditions, we have successfully prepared gratings which are applicable for X-ray and neutron Talbot-Lau interferometer.

    The final goal of this project is to realize three-dimensional and high-sensitive projection X-ray microscope using a compact laboratory source near future. We have established several elemental techniques to realize this microscope. We have successfully described X-ray propagation in the X-ray microscope system by a wave-optics theory and developed a simulator that allows us to predict the X-ray propagation and design the X-ray microscope. We have constructed an X-ray projection microscope using a compact laboratory with a μm-size X-ray source and demonstrated that three independent images (absorption, fringe-phase, and visibility-contrast images) with Fresnel diffraction can be obtained by the X-ray microscope. We further developed elemental techniques including fabrications of structured X-ray target and flexible X-ray grating.

    A method to evaluate structures and strains in the neXt generation silicon device using multiple X-ray diffraction was developed. By using this method it was revealed that strains are locally relaXed at the SiO_2/Si and Si_3N_4/Si interfaces, which were formed by Kr/O_2 and Xe/NH_3 plasmas, respectively. To apply this method to investigate local structures and strains in silicon devices, a multi-layer Laue lens-type X-ray focusing device was designed by using a simulator based on Takagi-Taupin type dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction. The focusing device was fabricated by using a deposition system. For visualization of three-dimensional strain distribution, another method based on X-ray phase imaging microscopy was also developed.

    Using the X-ray phase measurement techniques with X-ray transmission grating(s), including X-ray Talbot interferometry, in combination with an X-ray imaging microscope with a Fresnel zone plate, X-ray phase-sensitive imaging microscopy has been developed, enabling high-sensitive and high-resolution observation for weakly absorbing objects, such as polymers and biological tissues. In addition, by repeating the phase measurement at plural projection directions, three-dimensional image reconstruction of the refractive index (X-ray phase tomography) has also been demonstrated.
