    We have fabricated a 180 °-twisted bilayer ReSe2 by stacking two centrosymmetric monolayer ReSe2 flakes in opposite directions, which is expected to cause the loss of spatial inversion symmetry. We successfully observed spatial inversion-symmetry breaking, in contrast to the monolayer and natural bilayer ReSe2 by the second harmonic generation. ARPES measurements further revealed emergent band dispersions in the 180 °-twisted bilayer ReSe2, distinct from those of the monolayer ReSe2 used in its fabrication. The band calculation shows the finite lifting of spin degeneracy (∼50 meV) distinct from natural monolayer and bilayer ReSe2, which demonstrates that the spin-momentum locked state leading to Berry curvature related phenomena can be realized even with the stacking of centrosymmetric monolayers.     Abstract Applying lattice strain to thin films, a critical factor to tailor their properties such as stabilizing a structural phase unstable at ambient pressure, generally necessitates heteroepitaxial growth to control the lattice mismatch with substrate. Therefore, while homoepitaxy, the growth of thin film on a substrate made of the same material, is a useful method to fabricate high‐quality thin films, its application to studying strain‐induced structural phases is limited. Contrary to this general belief, here the quasi‐homoepitaxial growth of Cs and Rb thin films is reported with substantial in‐plane compressive strain. This is achieved by utilizing the alkali‐metal layer existing in bulk crystal of kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = Cs and Rb) as a structural template. The angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal the formation of metallic quantum well states and notable thickness‐dependent quasiparticle lifetime. Comparison with density functional theory calculations suggests that the obtained thin films crystalize in the face‐centered cubic structure, which is typically stable only under high pressure in bulk crystals. These findings provide a useful approach for synthesizing highly strained thin films by quasi‐homoepitaxy, and pave the way for investigating many‐body interactions in Fermi liquids with tunable dimensionality.

    Abstract A current key challenge in 2D materials is the realization of emergent quantum phenomena in hetero structures via controlling the moiré potential created by the periodicity mismatch between adjacent layers, as highlighted by the discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene. Generally, the lattice structure of the original host material remains unchanged even after the moiré superlattice is formed. However, much less attention is paid for the possibility that the moiré potential can also modify the original crystal structure itself. Here, it is demonstrated that octahedral MoTe2 which is unstable in bulk is stabilized in a commensurate MoTe2/graphene hetero‐bilayer due to the moiré potential created between the two layers. It is found that the reconstruction of electronic states via the moiré potential is responsible for this stabilization, as evidenced by the energy‐gap opening at the Fermi level observed by angle‐resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The present results provide a fresh approach to realize novel 2D quantum phases by utilizing the moiré potential.

    Abstract Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is an exciting challenge in materials science. Majorana fermions are predicted to emerge at vortex cores of two-dimensional (2D) TSCs and at both ends of one-dimensional (1D) TSCs; these two types of TSCs have been explored independently in different materials. Here, a system which has a potential to access both 1D and 2D TSCs in a single platform, Pb(111)/Bi(111) heterostructure, is proposed. One to twenty bilayers (BLs) of Bi(111) ultra-thin films are epitaxially fabricated on TlBiSe$_2$, and an intriguing evolution of electronic states upon variation of Bi-layer thickness is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The metallic quantum-well states at 1–2BLs are found to turn into the Rashba states at 5–20BLs, via the semiconducting states at 3BL. Fabrication of a Pb(111) film on 20BL Bi(111) enables observation of the proximity-induced superconductivity in Bi(111) as evident from a 1 meV energy gap at 5 K; these energy and temperature scales are considerably larger than those of Rashba superconductors. The Pb/Bi heterostructure serves as a versatile platform to study the interplay among proximity-induced superconductivity, band structure, and topology.

    <jats:p>The discovery of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in one-monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 has attracted tremendous attention. Subsequent studies suggested the importance of cooperation between intra-FeSe-layer and interfacial interactions to enhance Tc. However, the nature of intra-FeSe-layer interactions, which would play a primary role in determining the pairing symmetry, remains unclear. Here we have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of one-monolayer and alkaline-metal-deposited multilayer FeSe films on SrTiO3, and determined the evolution of quasiparticle band dispersion across Tc. We found that the band dispersion in the superconducting state deviates from the Bogoliubov-quasiparticle dispersion expected from the normal-state band dispersion with a constant gap size. This suggests highly anisotropic pairing originating from small momentum transfer and/or mass renormalization due to electron–boson coupling. This band anomaly is interpreted in terms of the electronic interactions within the FeSe layers that may be related to the high-Tc superconductivity in electron-doped FeSe.</jats:p>

    The discovery of high-temperature (<italic>T</italic>c) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question: Whether high <italic>T</italic>c is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with <italic>T</italic>c comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in situ topotactic reaction and molecular-beam epitaxy. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeS and FeSe revealed marked similarities in the electronic structure, such as heavy electron doping and interfacial electron–phonon coupling, both of which have been regarded as possible sources of high <italic>T</italic>c in FeSe. However, surprisingly, high-<italic>T</italic>c superconductivity is absent in monolayer FeS. This is linked to the weak superconducting pairing in electron-doped multilayer FeS in which the interfacial effects are absent. Our results strongly suggest that the cross-interface electron–phonon coupling enhances <italic>T</italic>c only when it cooperates with the pairing interaction inherent to the superconducting layer. This finding provides a key insight to explore heterointerface high-<italic>T</italic>c superconductors.

    <p>We have fabricated alkali metal (Li, Rb, Cs) and alkaline-earth metal (Ca) intercalated bilayer graphene on SiC substrate, and characterized them by low-energy electron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and 4-point-probe measurements. We observed a free-electron-like state in the center of the Brillouin zone, called &ldquo;interlayer state&rdquo;, as well as the folded &pi;/&pi;* bands in Rb-, Cs-, and Ca-intercalated graphene, while it was absent in Li counterpart. Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene shows the zero-resistance below 4K, indicative of the two-dimensional superconductivity. These results suggest that the interlayer state plays an important role for the superconductivity in intercalated bilayer graphene.</p>

    原子層研究が活発化する一方、それらの端(エッジ)構造に依存したエッジ物性は理解されていない。その理由は、原子層材料のエッジ構造制御の困難さと、結晶構造を同定する上で用いられるX線回折などによってエッジ構造物性を同定することの困難さにある。そこで本研究では、MBE法で作製した単原子層薄膜の電子状態をARPESによって可視化(イメージング化)し、ある端構造を持つ原子層構造を定義することで得られる電子状態の理論計算スクリーニングによって、原子層材料の終端構造を特定し、エッジ構造に起因した特異エッジ電子物性を創出が目的である。 初年度目となる本年度は、原子層を作製するための新たなMBE装置の建設を進めた。具体的には、所属研究室で故障し使用されなくなったxyzマニピュレータを独自に修理するとともに加熱装置を設計・製作した。また、原子層材料作製のためのBi・Sb・Te・Se用蒸着源を設置した。さらに、高速反射電子回折装置を設置することで、薄膜成長中の結晶構造評価をリアルタイムが可能にした。 MBE装置の建設を行う最中に、エッジ状態の同定には材料の端に分布するフォノン構造の分光学的測定手法の確立が必須であることが判明した。そこで当初研究計画にはなかったイメージング分光器の導入を行うことで、MBE装置で作製した材料をその場でPLやラマンスペクトルなどの測定が可能となる新たな装置を建設した。 また、エッジ電子状態の特定を目指した第一原理計算プログラムワーキングステーションは、ARPES実験を行いながらリモートで計算が行える研究環境に整えた。PCにはプログラミング言語の一つPythonと一般公開されている第一原理計算プログラムQuantum Espressoを導入することで電子状態や格子振動などの様々な計算が行えるように現在調整を進めている。 次年度からより具体的な研究を進める予定である。

  5. Realization of novel 2D topological insulator materials and its electronic structure analysis by spin-resolved ARPES

    I have fabricated a 2DTI (two-dimensional topological insulator) like Bi monolayer film (called Bismuthene) by using a molecular-beam-epitaxy and characterized the electronic state like Dirac-electron and topological non-trivial edge state by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Firstly, by developing a semiconductor hydrogen-annealing system, I obtained a clean hydrogen-terminated SiC (H-SIC) semiconductor surface. After depositing Bi atoms into H-SiC substrate, I clearly observed not only the superstructure patterns by LEED but also the hole-like dispersive feature by ARPES. These results indicate that we have succeeded in fabricating Bismuthene on H-SiC. In the future, I would clarify the band-gap feature of Dirac electrons and the edge-state in 2DTI. In this study. I also developed a new method for controlling the Dirac electrons by 2DTI heterostructures.

  6. Development of novel atomic layer superconductor based on fermiology by spin-resolved ARPES

    In order to improve the efficiency of materials development based on the electronic structure, we have constructed a platform in which an ultrahigh-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy system, an atomic layer thin film fabrication MBE system, and a sample evaluation chamber are operated in conjunction with each other under the same ultrahigh vacuum condition. We have fabricated various atomic layer materials and their junctions, such as iron-based high-Tc superconductors, transition metal chalcogenides, high-Tc superconductor hybrids, and topological insulator hybrids. By using the platform, we have immediately observed their electronic structures by ARPES experiments without contamination by exposure to air. Our definitive and accurate experiment has provided much knowledge about the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity, physical properties of 2D superconductors, and topological superconductivity.

    To realize monolayer graphene and graphene-nanoribbon superconductors and the mechanism of superconducting transition, I have fabricated a alkali-metal-coated monolayer graphene and graphene nanoribbon by molecular-beam epitaxy and performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). After depositing a potassium atom onto a monolayer graphene substrate, we found not only a folded Dirac-electron state due to a periodic potential of 2x2 superstructure but also a novel free-electron like two-dimensional electron gas. It has been well known that the free-electron like state plays an important rule for a superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). Surprisingly, I found that the folded Dirac-electron state and free-electron like state may be hybridized near the Fermi levels. These results suggests that the superconductivity in the metal coated graphene materials is induced by hybridization between Dirac electron and free-electron like state.

    The experimental definition of superconductivity is required to show both of zero resistance and Meissner effect. In this study we have found some superconducting ultrathin films having atomic-layer thicknesses, but only by the zero-resistance detection. In order to detect the Meissner effect, we have remodeled our world-unique system of micro-four-point probes at sub-Kelvin under vertical magnetic field in ultrahigh vacuum to combine SQUID system. Although it does not yet have enough sensitivity to detect the Meissner effect of mono-atomic-layer superconductivity, we have found several kinds of atomic-layer superconducting material systems. These showed some signatures for unconventional superconductivity beyond the BCS theory.

    We constructed a complex spin-resolved ARPES system with a multi-component MBE system to achieve the following three targets; (1) exploring the electronic structure of novel functional materials, (2) strategic development of advanced new materials based on the determined electronic structure, and (3) creating novel functions by making a hybrid of different materials. Using this ARPES system, we have succeeded in creating several new materials/functions as well as improving their novel properties. Some representative achievements are realization of high-Tc superconductivity in atomically thin FeSe, fabrication of superconducting bilayer graphene with intercalation method, synthesis of trilayer graphene with selecting the stacking sequence and identification of the electronic structure, control and tuning of electronic structure in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide, observation and mass-tuning of Dirac-cone interface states, and discovery of Weyl and nodal-line semimetals.

    Improvements of both sample quality by using inactive hexagonal boron nitride substrates and device performance of the scanning transmission electron microscope and the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy machine have made it possible to perform dramatically advanced research on electronic properties of atomic layers, which include graphene, new 2D materials, and their stacking composites. The followings remarkable results, leading to the development of atomic layer science, have been obtained; discovery of valley Hall effect in bilayer graphene, discovery of 50 K class high temperature superconductivity in FeSe atomic layers, direct observation of electron orbits in high mobility graphene, clarification of electronic structure of 2D semiconductor black phosphorus, elucidation of electronic structure of graphene multilayers, in situ observation of in-plane growth of graphene, and observation of quantum transport phenomena in epitaxial graphene on a tilted SiC substrate.

    Recently, monolayer graphite (graphene) with Dirac electrons has attracted much attention because it shows various interesting physical properties. On the other hands, the detailed electronic structure depended on the number of layers in graphene related materials has not been well understood yet. In this work, I have fabricated the thinnest limit of graphite intercalation compounds (intercalated bilayer graphene) and elucidated its electronic structures by high-resolution ARPES. In Ca intercalated bilayer graphene, I clearly observe the interlayer band responsible for superconductor in bulk GICs, suggest that Ca intercalated bilayer graphene also may show the 2-dimentional superconductivity. Additionally, I find the substrate-induced charge density wave in π band on Ca intercalated bilayer graphene.

    Recently, monolayer graphite (graphene)have attracted much attention because it shows various interesting physical properties. However, the detailed electronic responsible for the anomalous physical properties in graphene depended the number of layers has not been well understood yet. To elucidate the anomalous physical properties of graphene, we have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)of monolayer and bilayer graphene on SiC (0001). We clearly observed the band structure deviated from ideal graphene on both monolayer and bilayer graphene growth on SiC (0001). These experimental results are explained in terms of the buffer layer.

  13. 超高分解能スピン分解光電子分光装置の建設と低次元ナノ電子系の微細電子構造の研究

    これまで低次元ナノ電子系は、金属絶縁体転移、スピンパイエルス転移、超伝導転移など興味ある研究がなされてきた。現在ではこれらの特異物性のみならず、ナノスケールにおけるデバイスへの応用、さらには新たなスピンの自由度を応用したスピントロニクスの分野として精力的な研究がなされている。そのため、ナノスケールの試料を独自に作成し、それを電子状態の立場から試料評価し、さらには電子状態から判明される新たな特異物性を明らかにする上で、スピンの情報を得る事が可能となる「超高分解能スピン分解光電子分光装置」の建設が重要である。 本年度は、高分解能角度分解光電子分光装置に設置できるコンパクトサイズの高感度小型モット検出器の建設・設置を行った。この小型モット検出器を用いることによって、スピンの情報を得る事が可能となる。設置当初、小型モット検出器内部において放電によるノイズの増加の問題が発生したが、その内部構造や光電子検出部の改良を行い、ノイズの問題を解決した。また、小型モット検出器の調整のために、建設した試料作成装置を用いて新たにSi半導体表面上でV族半金属Bi薄膜作成を行った。その結果、非常に良質なBi薄膜の作成に成功し、薄膜の厚さをナノメータスケールで制御する事を可能にした。この表面を用いて、現在も引き続き超高分解能スピン分解光電子分光装置の調整を行っている。また前年度から、スピントロニクスへの応用が期待され始めたグラファイトの研究に着手しており、本年度では、磁性/超伝導といった様々な物性制御が行えるグラファイト層間化合物の研究を行った。その結果、超伝導転移を示すグラファイト層間化合物において、超伝導転移に重要な役目する電子は層間電子であることを光電子分光で明らかにした。

    近年、層状物質グラファイトを原子層化した際のディラック粒子の発見によって、様々な層状物質の原子層化による新規物性研究が行われている。本研究では、これまで本研究者が培ってきた分子線エピタキシー技術を用いて様々なセレン系遷移金属カルコゲナイド原子層を作成し、それらの電子状態を角度分解光電子分光によって直接観測することで、原子層化による新規物性解明と機能性材料開発に向けた指針を得ることを目的とする。

    グラファイト層間化合物は、多彩な物性を示すため基礎/応用研究が盛んに行われてきた。しかしながら、極限まで薄くした2層グラフェン層間化合物は積層数制御の困難さのため報告例がなく、基礎物性に関しては未解明である。そこで本研究では、電子状態を直接決定することが可能な角度分解光電子分光を用いて、作成した2層グラフェン層間化合物における特異物性を電子状態から解明することを目的とする。
