Abstract In-situ observation has expanded the application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and has made a significant contribution to materials research and development for energy, biomedical, quantum, etc. Recent technological developments related to in-situ TEM have empowered the incorporation of three-dimensional observation, which was previously considered incompatible. In this review article, we take up heating as the most commonly used external stimulus for in-situ TEM observation and overview recent in-situ TEM studies. Then, we focus on the electron tomography (ET) and in-situ heating combined observation by introducing the authors’ recent research as an example. Assuming that in-situ heating observation is expanded from two dimensions to three dimensions using a conventional TEM apparatus and a commercially available in-situ heating specimen holder, the following in-situ heating-and-ET observation procedure is proposed: (i) use a rapid heating-and-cooling function of a micro-electro-mechanical system holder; (ii) heat and cool the specimen intermittently and (iii) acquire a tilt-series dataset when the specimen heating is stopped. This procedure is not too technically challenging and can have a wide range of applications. Essential technical points for a successful 4D (space and time) observation will be discussed through reviewing the authors’ example application.

Abstract The anisotropic electronic structure of MgB2C2 was studied using soft X-ray emission spectroscopy electron microscopes. MgB2C2 fragments were selected by examining C K-emission profiles. C and B K-emission and Mg L-emission spectra were obtained, revealing common and distinct structures that reflect the mixing of valence orbitals. Since the material is reported to have two-dimensional B–C honeycomb layers, the orientational dependence of these emission spectra was also examined. Experimental data were compared with the theoretically calculated partial density of states of the valence bands (VBs) of the material. The C K-emission profile showed an apparent orientational dependence, while the B K-emission exhibited minimal dependence. This difference originated from the different energy distributions of C-2pz and B-2pz components in the VBs. The Mg L-emission intensity was very small, likely due to charge transfer from Mg atoms to B–N layers. The Mg L-emission profile showed a peak related to structures in C-K and B-K. An unexpected intensity was observed just above the VBs, which also showed orientational dependence, possibly due to a small deviation from the ideal composition of Mg:B:C = 1:2:2.

Abstract The mechanisms underlying the influence of the surface chemistry of inorganic materials on polymer structures and fracture behaviours near adhesive interfaces are not fully understood. This study demonstrates the first clear and direct evidence that molecular surface segregation and cross-linking of epoxy resin are driven by intermolecular forces at the inorganic surfaces alone, which can be linked directly to adhesive failure mechanisms. We prepare adhesive interfaces between epoxy resin and silicon substrates with varying surface chemistries (OH and H terminations) with a smoothness below 1 nm, which have different adhesive strengths by ~13 %. The epoxy resins within sub-nanometre distance from the surfaces with different chemistries exhibit distinct amine-to-epoxy ratios, cross-linked network structures, and adhesion energies. The OH- and H-terminated interfaces exhibit cohesive failure and interfacial delamination, respectively. The substrate surface chemistry impacts the cross-linked structures of the epoxy resins within several nanometres of the interfaces and the adsorption structures of molecules at the interfaces, which result in different fracture behaviours and adhesive strengths.

Abstract This study proposes a simple evaluation method for deriving L-absorption information from two L-emission spectra of 3d transition metal (TM) elements obtained at two different accelerating voltages. This method realizes a spatial identity for X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies. This method was evaluated for the Fe L-emission spectra of Fe and its oxides and was applied to the TM L-emission spectra of MnO, Co, CoO and NiO. The derived absorption peak positions were consistent with those obtained previously at synchrotron orbital radiation facilities, which considered the core–hole effect. This simple derivation method could be useful for obtaining X-ray absorption spectroscopy distribution images from X-ray emission spectroscopy mapping data obtained by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract The mechanisms of electron irradiation damage to epoxy resin samples were evaluated using their electron diffraction patterns and electron energy-loss (EEL) spectra. Their electron diffraction patterns consisted of three indistinct halo rings. The halo ring, related to an intermolecular distance of ~6.4 Å, degraded rapidly with electron beam irradiation. Such molecular-scale collapse could have been caused by cross-linking between molecular chains. The degree of electron irradiation damage to the samples changed with the accelerating voltage. Tolerance dose limit of epoxy resin estimated from the intensity of the halo ring was found to be improved at higher accelerating voltage. Changes in low-loss EEL spectra indicated that the mass loss of epoxy resin was remarkable in the early stage of electron irradiation.

Abstract For examining the characteristics of L-emission spectra of Fe, Mn and their oxides, a larger energy-dispersion spectrometer for an electron probe microanalyser was constructed. The energy resolution was evaluated to be 0.3 eV at the Fermi edge observed for the B K-emission of LaB6. The Lα,β-emission profiles and peak positions of those oxides were different from those of pure metals, reflecting the different density of states of valence bands and different charge states of metal elements. The Lℓ-emission profiles of the oxides showed shoulder structures, even though the emission is caused by transitions between two inner shell levels. The presence of the shoulder structures was assigned to the result of the 3s3d exchange interaction in the final state of the Lℓ emission, in which the 3s state has a spin. The Lℓ profiles were decomposed into two peaks by Lorentz fit, and the energy separation was evaluated to be ∼3 eV.

<title>Abstract</title> Phase diagram of Au–Si binary alloy system shows a large drop in melting temperature of about 1000K compared with that of Si at a composition of Au:Si = 81:19, where the melting temperature is about 636K. Mixing of Au and Si below the melting temperature was observed by transmission electron microscopy experiment, and it was found that the mixed region shows a diffraction pattern of a diffuse ring intensity indicating an amorphous structure of the mixed area. Si L-emission spectra, which reflect the energy state of bonding electrons of Si atom, of molten Au81Si19 alloy were measured for the first time to investigate the energy state of valence electrons of Si. The Si L-emission spectrum showed a characteristic loss of L1 peak, which is related to sp3 directional bonding in crystalline Si. The intensity profile is also different from that of molten Si reported. This suggests a characteristic atomic arrangement that exists in the molten state. The intensity profile also indicated a small density of state in the molten state at Fermi energy. The obtained spectrum was compared with the calculated density of state of possible crystal structures reported. The comparison suggested that Si atoms are surrounded by eight Au atoms in the molten state of Au81Si19 alloy. The formation of this local atomic arrangement can be an origin of a large drop of melting temperature at about Au:Si = 81:19.

<title>Abstract</title>In nanocomposites, the adhesion between nanofillers and the polymeric matrix is key to the mechanical properties. The strength and spatial distribution of the adhesive layer around the nanofillers are important, particularly the presence of chemical bonding between the nanofillers and matrix. In this work, we studied a styrene-butadiene rubber composite filled with silica nanoparticles to visualize the spatial distribution of the adhesive layer. A silane coupling agent (SCA) was added to the nanocomposite for strong adhesion. The reaction involving the SCA on the silica surface was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Si-L2,3 spectra of the silica-filled rubber nanocomposite without the SCA were the same around the nanofillers, whereas in the nanocomposite containing the SCA the spectra were position-dependent. The spectra were fitted with the intensity profiles of the Si-L2,3 spectra of silica and SCA by multiple linear least-squares fitting. The fitting coefficients of silica and SCA were used to map the spatial distribution of the chemical bonding between silica and rubber chains. Chemical bonding was observed around the silica nanoparticles but not in the SBR matrix region, providing direct evidence of the reinforcing mechanism in the silica-filled rubber nanocomposite.

In this study, we focused on the peak of the graphite (002) [G(002)] plane of neutron-irradiated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using in-situ X-ray diffraction method and analyzed the structural change during the compression and decompression processes at high temperature in order to understand the details of the transformation mechanism of neutron-irradiated HOPG. It was found that the G(002) peak can be represented by two components from RT to about 600°C, and it can be represented by only one component at the higher temperature in the neutron-irradiated sample, whereas it can be represented by only one component in the unirradiated sample.

Electronic structure of hexagonal diamond(h-DIA)was investigated by using high energyresolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy(EELS)based on transmission electron microscopy. The dielectric function of h-DIA was derived by Kramers-Kronig analysis of the EELS spectrum. Core electron excitation spectrum of h-DIA revealed density of states in conduction band, which was different distribution from that of cubic diamond. The electronic structure of h-DIA was experimentally revealed for the first time.

Cs-doped hexagonal WO3 (CWO) is used as a solar heat-shielding material for windows, in which plasma oscillation due to carrier electrons (carrier plasmon) plays an important role for near infrared scattering. Despite the hexagonal crystal structure of CWO, the anisotropic properties of the carrier plasmons have not been investigated. This study reports the momentum transfer resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopic measurements of CWO to investigate the anisotropic properties of carrier plasmons. <BR> The experimental results clarified that the two plasma oscillation modes at 1.2 and 1.8 eV have different excitation properties in CWO. One plasma oscillation at 1.2 eV was oscillation mode along the ab plane with a large damping effect. Another mode at 1.8 eV was an oscillation along the c-axis with a small damping effect. These anisotropic plasmon modes led to an accurate understanding of the heat-shielding mechanism.

In this study, we tried to evaluate the individual particles directly using the transmission electron microscope with respect to the structure and optical properties of multilayered fluorescent nanoparticles. We succeeded in demonstrating that the optical properties of individual particles can be directly evaluated by electron energy loss spectroscopy using a monochromator. We found that the crystallinity of the nano region can be discussed by this approach, and the crystallinity of the shell layer is reflected in the fluorescence efficiency.

Previously, we have discovered transformation from neutron-irradiated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to amorphous diamond under shock compression. Here, we show the band gap energy of amorphous diamond is estimated to be 4 eV, which is similar to the value reported for the amorphous diamond synthesized from C60 fullerene by shock compression. In addition, we utilized HOPG foils irradiated with a neutron dose of about a half of the previous study, and found the transformation to the amorphous diamond. Also, we reported the synthesis of transparent graphitic tiles from carbon nanowalls by shock compression. It was suggested that the transparent tile is a mixture of amorphous diamond and superhard graphitic material.
