    Abstract Causality represents a directed relationship where one state, designated as a cause, directly produces or partially influences another state, an effect. Identifying causality in observations of physical phenomena is a core challenge in science, as it reveals the fundamental laws governing these observations. However, extracting causal relationships from complex data remains difficult. While recent advances in machine learning offer promising avenues, a definitive guiding principle for its application for causal inference has yet to emerge. Here, we propose a protocol to analyze spectroscopy data using DirectLiNGAM, one of statistical causal inferences for learning a Linear Non-Gaussian Acyclic Model. We applied this approach to spatially resolved core-level photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the kagome superconductor CsV₃Sb₅. Our analysis uncovered intriguing causal relationships among Cs surface coverage, core-level intensity/position, and the spectral background. These findings provide an explanation for the polar surface formation in CsV₃Sb₅ and, furthermore, reveal an unexpected causal link in the intensity of spin-orbit satellite peaks. These results highlight the potential of our method to reveal new physical laws that would be difficult to identify using conventional data analysis techniques.

    Abstract Applying lattice strain to thin films, a critical factor to tailor their properties such as stabilizing a structural phase unstable at ambient pressure, generally necessitates heteroepitaxial growth to control the lattice mismatch with substrate. Therefore, while homoepitaxy, the growth of thin film on a substrate made of the same material, is a useful method to fabricate high‐quality thin films, its application to studying strain‐induced structural phases is limited. Contrary to this general belief, here the quasi‐homoepitaxial growth of Cs and Rb thin films is reported with substantial in‐plane compressive strain. This is achieved by utilizing the alkali‐metal layer existing in bulk crystal of kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = Cs and Rb) as a structural template. The angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal the formation of metallic quantum well states and notable thickness‐dependent quasiparticle lifetime. Comparison with density functional theory calculations suggests that the obtained thin films crystalize in the face‐centered cubic structure, which is typically stable only under high pressure in bulk crystals. These findings provide a useful approach for synthesizing highly strained thin films by quasi‐homoepitaxy, and pave the way for investigating many‐body interactions in Fermi liquids with tunable dimensionality.

    Abstract Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials.

    Abstract A current key challenge in 2D materials is the realization of emergent quantum phenomena in hetero structures via controlling the moiré potential created by the periodicity mismatch between adjacent layers, as highlighted by the discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene. Generally, the lattice structure of the original host material remains unchanged even after the moiré superlattice is formed. However, much less attention is paid for the possibility that the moiré potential can also modify the original crystal structure itself. Here, it is demonstrated that octahedral MoTe2 which is unstable in bulk is stabilized in a commensurate MoTe2/graphene hetero‐bilayer due to the moiré potential created between the two layers. It is found that the reconstruction of electronic states via the moiré potential is responsible for this stabilization, as evidenced by the energy‐gap opening at the Fermi level observed by angle‐resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The present results provide a fresh approach to realize novel 2D quantum phases by utilizing the moiré potential.

    Abstract Fermi-surface (FS) nesting originating from Peierls’ idea of electronic instabilities in one-dimensional materials is a key concept to stabilize charge-density wave (CDW), whereas its applicability to two-dimensional (2D) materials is under intensive debate. Here we report unusual CDW associated with the higher-order FS nesting in monolayer 2D VS2. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy uncovered stripe CDW with $$\sqrt {21} R10.9^\circ \times \sqrt 3 R30^\circ$$ periodicity together with an energy-gap opening on the entire FS. We suggest that this CDW involves the higher-order FS-nesting vector 2q twice larger than that of the normal one (q), as supported by the anomalies in the calculated phonon dispersion and electronic susceptibility. The present results suggest that the cooperation of q and 2q nesting leads to the fully gapped CDW state unlike the case of conventional single q nesting which produces a partial gap, pointing to an intriguing mechanism of CDW transition.

    Gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) sputtering has a high potential for obtaining clean and flat surfaces on materials without causing structural or compositional damage. We have developed an Ar cluster GCIB system for surface preparation in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The constructed GCIB system is compatible with ultrahigh vacuum and achieves a beam current of 10 µA. We examined the usefulness of our GCIB system for high surface-sensitive ARPES measurements by applying it to several representative materials, e.g., Sb, GaAs, and Te. The results show that the constructed GCIB system is very useful for preparing a clean flat surface on crystals, widening opportunities for precise ARPES measurements for materials whose crystal surfaces or orientations are hardly obtained by a simple cleaving method.

    Abstract Kagome lattices offer a fertile ground to explore exotic quantum phenomena associated with electron correlation and band topology. The recent discovery of superconductivity coexisting with charge-density wave (CDW) in the kagome metals KV3Sb5, RbV3Sb5, and CsV3Sb5 suggests an intriguing entanglement of electronic order and superconductivity. However, the microscopic origin of CDW, a key to understanding the superconducting mechanism and its possible topological nature, remains elusive. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of KV3Sb5 and demonstrate a substantial reconstruction of Fermi surface in the CDW state that accompanies the formation of small three-dimensional pockets. The CDW gap exhibits a periodicity of undistorted Brillouin zone along the out-of-plane wave vector, signifying a dominant role of the in-plane inter-saddle-point scattering to the mechanism of CDW. The characteristics of experimental band dispersion can be captured by first-principles calculations with the inverse star-of-David structural distortion. The present result indicates a direct link between the low-energy excitations and CDW, and puts constraints on the microscopic theory of superconductivity in alkali-metal kagome lattices.

    Abstract Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is an exciting challenge in materials science. Majorana fermions are predicted to emerge at vortex cores of two-dimensional (2D) TSCs and at both ends of one-dimensional (1D) TSCs; these two types of TSCs have been explored independently in different materials. Here, a system which has a potential to access both 1D and 2D TSCs in a single platform, Pb(111)/Bi(111) heterostructure, is proposed. One to twenty bilayers (BLs) of Bi(111) ultra-thin films are epitaxially fabricated on TlBiSe$_2$, and an intriguing evolution of electronic states upon variation of Bi-layer thickness is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The metallic quantum-well states at 1–2BLs are found to turn into the Rashba states at 5–20BLs, via the semiconducting states at 3BL. Fabrication of a Pb(111) film on 20BL Bi(111) enables observation of the proximity-induced superconductivity in Bi(111) as evident from a 1 meV energy gap at 5 K; these energy and temperature scales are considerably larger than those of Rashba superconductors. The Pb/Bi heterostructure serves as a versatile platform to study the interplay among proximity-induced superconductivity, band structure, and topology.

    The discovery of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in one-monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 has attracted tremendous attention. Subsequent studies suggested the importance of cooperation between intra-FeSe-layer and interfacial interactions to enhance Tc. However, the nature of intra-FeSe-layer interactions, which would play a primary role in determining the pairing symmetry, remains unclear. Here we have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of one-monolayer and alkaline-metal-deposited multilayer FeSe films on SrTiO3, and determined the evolution of quasiparticle band dispersion across Tc. We found that the band dispersion in the superconducting state deviates from the Bogoliubov-quasiparticle dispersion expected from the normal-state band dispersion with a constant gap size. This suggests highly anisotropic pairing originating from small momentum transfer and/or mass renormalization due to electron–boson coupling. This band anomaly is interpreted in terms of the electronic interactions within the FeSe layers that may be related to the high-Tc superconductivity in electron-doped FeSe.

    The discovery of high-temperature (<italic>T</italic>c) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question: Whether high <italic>T</italic>c is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with <italic>T</italic>c comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in situ topotactic reaction and molecular-beam epitaxy. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeS and FeSe revealed marked similarities in the electronic structure, such as heavy electron doping and interfacial electron–phonon coupling, both of which have been regarded as possible sources of high <italic>T</italic>c in FeSe. However, surprisingly, high-<italic>T</italic>c superconductivity is absent in monolayer FeS. This is linked to the weak superconducting pairing in electron-doped multilayer FeS in which the interfacial effects are absent. Our results strongly suggest that the cross-interface electron–phonon coupling enhances <italic>T</italic>c only when it cooperates with the pairing interaction inherent to the superconducting layer. This finding provides a key insight to explore heterointerface high-<italic>T</italic>c superconductors.

    We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on atomic-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO_3 substrate. We observed that a monolayer film shows superconductivity with the onset temperature of 60 K. We also found that potassium (K) deposition onto the film enables the systematic control of carrier concentration. By using this method, we have succeeded in converting non-superconducting as-grown multilayer films into a high-temperature superconductor. We have established the electronic phase diagram of FeSe film and revealed an important role of interface for realizing the high-temperature superconductivity.

    S蒸着源を備えたトポタクティック反応装置を新たに設計・製作してMBE装置にドッキング、調整を行った。トポタクティック反応装置については、バリアブルリークバルブによるS蒸着レートの精密な制御、通電加熱機構による薄膜の加熱、耐腐食性材料を用いた各部の浸食の抑制、多段ポンプによる超高真空化を実現した。これにより、各種の薄膜試料に対してトポタクティック反応を促すための基盤が整った。また、高分解能ARPES装置の希ガスプラズマ放電管の光学系を改良し、集光用の中空ガラスキャピラリ型レンズを導入することで、ビームスポットの微小化に取り組んだ。また、差動排気システムの強化も同時に実現することでARPES測定時の真空度の向上を達成した。 以上の建設・改良した装置を用いることで、鉄系高温超伝導体FeCh (Ch = S, Se, Te)薄膜の高分解能ARPES測定を行い、電子状態のカルコゲン濃度依存性を系統的に決定した。その結果、電子ネマティック秩序や超伝導転移温度の組成依存性を理解する上で、Fe 3d軌道に依存したバンドのエネルギーシフトと状態密度の変化を考慮する必要があることを見出した。また、超伝導転移温度を跨いだ準粒子バンド分散の変化を高精度で決定することで、波数に依存しない単純なs波的超伝導状態から逸脱する振る舞いを見出した。トポロジカル絶縁体薄膜に対してもS照射を行い、トポタクティック反応を実現するための条件を見出すことに成功した。新物質の物性解明に向けて、高分解能ARPES測定を行い、基本的なバンド構造を決定した。

    We have investigated new types of atomic-layer materials based on the understanding of energy band structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level responsible for the physical properties, by integrating high-resolution spin-resolved ARPES technique and fabrication of high-quality ultrathin films using molecular-beam epitaxy. In transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), we fabricated some new monolayer compounds and accurately elucidated their unusual electronic states such as the energy gap. We also proposed a new method to control dimensionality of the TMDs. Moreover, we found Dirac electrons in the iron-based-superconductor thin films and hybrid thin films involving topological insulators and Rasha metals, and found that its appearance is governed by a few key parameters such as the spin-orbit interactions and crystal symmetry.

    We have investigated the superconducting mechanism in ultrathin iron-based superconductors and also searched for high-temperature superconductivity. By improving an angle-resolved photoemission spectrometer and a molecular-beam epitaxy system, we have grown ultrathin films of iron-based superconductors with various compositions, carrier concentrations, and thicknesses. By determing their superconducting temperatures and electronic structures, we have succeeded in achieving high-temperature superconductivity, determining the phase diagram, and uncovering exotic properties. Our detailed ARPES studies provide important insights into the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

    We constructed a complex spin-resolved ARPES system with a multi-component MBE system to achieve the following three targets; (1) exploring the electronic structure of novel functional materials, (2) strategic development of advanced new materials based on the determined electronic structure, and (3) creating novel functions by making a hybrid of different materials. Using this ARPES system, we have succeeded in creating several new materials/functions as well as improving their novel properties. Some representative achievements are realization of high-Tc superconductivity in atomically thin FeSe, fabrication of superconducting bilayer graphene with intercalation method, synthesis of trilayer graphene with selecting the stacking sequence and identification of the electronic structure, control and tuning of electronic structure in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide, observation and mass-tuning of Dirac-cone interface states, and discovery of Weyl and nodal-line semimetals.

    In order to clarify the superconducting mechanism of iron-based superconductors, we have improved an ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectrometer. By using this apparatus, we have performed systematic photoemission spectroscopy study of the electronic structure in various iron-based superconductors. The obtained results suggest an important role of spin fluctuations for the superconductivity. Our results also provide new insights into the electronic phase diagrams of iron-based superconductors. Besides performing photoemission, we have fabricated thin films of iron selenide and succeeded in converting non-superconducting multilayer films into high-temperature superconductors as a consequence of successful electron doping.

    これまで建設・改良を進めてきた超高分解能光電子分光装置を用いて、銅酸化物および鉄系高温超伝導体の電子状態の研究を行った。銅酸化物高温超伝導体Bi_2Sr_2CuO_6の超伝導・擬ギャップの温度・波数依存性を高精度で決定し、超伝導ギャップから擬ギャップへの変化が、超伝導転移温度をまたいで連続的に起こることを見出した。また、擬ギャップの消失する温度は波数によらず超伝導ギャップサイズに比例することを明らかにした。これらの結果は、長年の未解決問題であった擬ギャップの起源が、超伝導の前駆現象に関係することを示している。超伝導機構が未解明である電子型鉄系超伝導体BaFe_<2-x>Co_xAs_2のフェルミ面および超伝導ギャップを世界で初めて直接観測することに成功し、超伝導対称性がs波であること、および反強磁性ベクトルで繋がれるフェルミ面上で超伝導ギャップサイズが増大していることを見出した。これらの結果は、高温超伝導が反強磁性揺らぎによって生じていることを示している。また、ホール型Ba_<1-x>K_xFe_2As_2の結果と比較を行うことで、電子型とホール型の両者で超伝導機構が共通である「電子-ホール対称性」が成り立っていることを実験的に示した。さらに、結晶構造の異なるFeTe_<1-x>Se_x超伝導体のフェルミ面と超伝導ギャップを高分解能ARPESによって決定することに初めて成功し、反強磁性揺らぎにもとづく超伝導機構が鉄系高温超伝導体において普遍的に実現していることを示唆した。
