    This study investigates the linguistic challenges encountered by Chinese academics in science and engineering when writing for English-language scholarly publications. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research draws on survey responses from 732 participants and insights from semi-structured interviews with 13 interviewees. Sentence construction emerged as the most significant challenge, followed by issues with vocabulary selection, cohesive devices, coherence, and grammar, with notable variation across academic ranks. Common strategies to address these challenges include utilizing online tools, seeking peer support, and employing professional editing services. The findings offer actionable recommendations for tailored academic writing training, institutional support, and the integration of advanced technological tools, aiming to enhance publication success rates among non-native English-speaking scholars.

    Critical thinking is one of the most demanded skills for educational goals, job security, and problem solving in the lifelong process of 21st - century learners. Thus, various specialised courses in education have adopted approaches that integrate critical thinking throughout the curriculum. From the perspective of English language teaching, teachers, researchers, and syllabus writers are committed to the development of learners’ language acquisition through critical thinking as a language pedagogical approach. Empirical studies have frequently demonstrated a high positive correlation between leaners’ critical thinking skills and their language proficiency gains. However, in the Asian EFL context of higher education, the practice of critical thinking skills in language classrooms is not yet well supported widely. In order to clarify the essential place of critical thinking in EFL education, through the insightful discussion on the relevant literature background, this critical review of the literature suggests ways to improve English language teaching that incorporate critical thinking in three major areas: (1) language teaching instructional strategies that incorporate critical thinking, (2) language teaching materials that incorporate critical thinking, and (3) pedagogical content knowledge about critical thinking skills for language teachers. Therefore, this study aims to raise awareness among teachers, researchers, educational scholars, and regional and national authorities in the Asian EFL higher education context about the representation of critical thinking in language programs and teacher training in the roadmap for future English language education.

    This treatise deals with the meaning of "death" in Thomas Mann's (1875-1955) Death in Venice (1912). The present author interprets the death of the protagonist Aschenbach in the light of the symbolic dichotomy presented in Friedrich Nietzsche's (1844-1900) Birth of Tragedy (1872), i.e., from the conflict between the "Appolonian" vs. "Dionysian" worlds. After scrutinizing each chapter of this novel and analyzing the transition of Aschenbach' s mental condition, the present author comes to the conclusion 1) that Venice is a symbolic theater for Aschenbach in which he played a tragedy for and by himself, and 2) that Aschenbach's death means the "liberation" or "emancipation" from the "Appolonian" life, i.e., the daily rational life of the ordinary persons, and the "re-birth" into the "Dionysian" life, i.e., the lofty life of artists. By means of examining the Greek aestheticism in Death in Venice and understanding the fateful relationship between human life and art, which is the Leitmotiv of this work, we will able to penetrate into comprehension of 1) the affliction of those who must live in the modernized world and 2) the importance of the fantastic world as a shelter or an asylum of our spirit. Aschenbach, as a "work of art," obtains the eternal life in the "Dionysian" world by his death in Venice. Projecting such a figure to the nature of Greek tragedy, we will be able to grasp the true meaning of our aspiring of the spiritual eternity of human beings through art activities.

    In linguistics today, of which the goal is, as a branch of the exact sciences, to seek for the nature of language through observation, description, and analysis of linguistic phenomena, "grammar" does not necessarily mean a prescriptive rule-book to be used for adequate expression and communication. However, an ardent desire to speak and write a language with propriety has never ceased, and the tradition of grammar as an "art" has been handed down in a form of a writing manual or a style manual to this day. In this report, I examine example sentences in the "Grammar" of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and indicate how such a writing manual for research papers in general plays a role as a rule-book, i.e., as prescriptive grammar, for good writing.

    Through analyzing textbooks of English academic writing (EAW) and conducting survey on their application to English classes in ESL countries and areas (e.g., Hong Kong, Malaysia), the researcher came to the conclusion that the English learning support system practiced at universities in ESL areas and countries would be of great help to improve college students' ability for academic writing in Japan. Besides, other findings from self-learning centers at universities in EFL countries gave important suggestions to our reformation of curricula for English academic writing.

    This research cluster has investigated the methodological peculiarities of the ‘evidential Confucians’ in Japan, and examined it in conjunction with their counterparts in China and the philologie of Germany in a similar period. The most notable methodological developments include the qualities of classical philology and historical chronology in the second-half of the Tokugawa period; such disciplines as grammar and usage, phonetics, prosody and lexicography also developed in the era. The Japanese evidential scholarship owed considerably to the increasingly influential Qing China scholarship, but the exports of Japanese scholarly achievements to China was also an important factor for the mutually beneficial scholarly development on both sides of East China Sea. The mid-to-late Tokugawa scholarship was highly responsible for the development of the Bakumatsu ‘evidential’ scholarship that further helped develop 'modern' academic disciplines such as history in Meiji Japan.
