ABSTRACT The detection of microseismic events with low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) can expand the seismic catalog and provide opportunities for a deeper understanding of subsurface reservoir features. We propose a novel polarization analysis method for comprehensively detecting S-wave arrival and P–S travel time of low-SNR events from the particle motion of P and S waves in the time and frequency domain. In most circumstances, the direct S-wave particle motion shows a flat plane, and that is perpendicular to the direct P-wave motion direction. We combine these two properties to detect the S-wave arrival of low-SNR events. Our previous study applied spectral matrix (SPM) analysis to characterize the 3D particle motion of P waves. However, SPM analysis had limitations in detecting S-wave arrivals. We then introduce the time-delay components of the SPM (complex spectral matrix [cSPM]) to characterize the S-wave particle motion, separate the S-wave from the noise, and detect S-wave arrivals. Using the cSPM analysis method, we assess the planarity and perpendicularity of the S-wave polarization in the time and frequency domains. We then define a characteristic function that detects S-wave arrivals by combining two properties, planarity and perpendicularity, to detect more low-SNR events. The P–S travel time is obtained by setting the threshold values for the P- and S-wave characteristic functions. We apply our method to 4 hr and 2 months of field data recorded at the Groningen field in the Netherlands. Our method successfully detects the P–S travel time of all catalog events and several additional undetected events. We locate the hypocenter of all events using the detected P–S travel times with a grid-based search method.

The pandemic has made human mobility difficult and face-to-face study abroad programs were replaced with online ones using remote tools. This has led to a rethinking of the form of study abroad. This research compares the education benefits and motivations of the onsite and online versions of the Tohoku University High School Bridging Program which has been ongoing since before the pandemic. As a result, we found that each onsite and online program had different features of achievements in English skills and awareness. Rather than substituting online as a temporary alternative measure of the inability to travel abroad, we believe that it is meaningful to choose the method according to the educational objectives.

Gold mines in South Africa have mining depths of up to ~4 km. Mining in such depths under high-stress conditions induces many earthquakes, which pose serious hazard to mine workers. To mitigate seismic risks and to understand the role ofmicroearthquakes in earthquake generation processes, we have conducted ultra-sensitive seismic observations, which allow acoustic emissions (AEs) to be detected down to MW −5 (typical rupture size ~ several centimeters), at two South African gold mines. We have found out various modes of AE activity previously unknown from conventional seismic networks (detectability only down to MW ~ −1): AE activity before and after an MW 2.2 earthquake, AE activity likely reflecting damage accumulation processes ahead of an advancing mining front, and AEs occurring steadily along geological faults. This paper summarizes these findings, which received the fiscal 2016 frontier award of the Japanese Society for Rock Mechanics (JSRM).

In this paper, the quantitative evaluation of performance and advantages of Geothermal Heat Pump (GeoHP) system in Yumoto District in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, was studied comparing to other ordinary areas, where the geothermal gradient and the thermal conductivity these values are 3-4 and 1.7 times larger than those in other ordinary areas shown in literatures, respectively. In this study, the GeoHP was operated at Yumoto Nursery School and the numerical simulation has also been carried out to analyze the dynamic behavior of GeoHP system, considering the geothermal gradients and thermal conductivities.<BR>It was revealed that the outgoing fluid temperature of circulation fluid in Yumoto was about 3-4°C higher than that of an ordinary area after the operation for 30 days, and that the thermal conductivity much affect the temperature change. Under a condition of 8 hours continuous operation a day, the electric power consumption of the compressor was 3.1-6.7% lower and the COP of the system was 0.2-0.4 higher in Yumoto than those in ordinary area. The maximum amount of extracted heat for 15 years under this operation condition in Yumoto was estimated to be 1.4-1.7 times larger than that in an ordinary area. It was also revealed that the room temperature recovers in only 30 minutes after an intermission of 8 hours operation a day to the same level as the 24 hours continuous operation. The electric power consumption of the compressor in the intermittent operation exceeded the case of continuous operation only in the first 20 minutes after the heat pump system restarted. It was suggested that these demerits of the intermittent operation, such as room temperature drop and higher electricity consumption after the intermission, are smaller than the demerits of the fall of the ground temperature in the continuous operation, and that the intermittent operations are suitable for the geothermal heat pump system.

In this paper, we examine how the thermal conductivity estimated on line-source theory is affected by geothermal gradient, where we discuss it through a numerical simulation referring the real data obtained at Yumoto, Fukushima, Japan. <BR>The thermal conductivity of layer estimated though thermal response test is usually apparent thermal conductivity and the estimate of apparent thermal conductivity is affected by the underground conditions such as groundwater flow and geothermal gradient. Then, we have calculated the apparent thermal conductivity using a simulator on FEM, where we changed the geothermal gradients and conditions for approximation of thermal response curves. It has been revealed that the estimated thermal conductivities have different trends depending on the thermal response curve used for estimation such as circulation test or recovery test, and heating or cooling. It has also been revealed that the difference between actual thermal conductivity and its estimates has been 7.3 in maximum to the actual thermal conductivity in case of Yumoto, where the thermal gradient is 0.106 /m.

A simulator for the geothermal heat pump system considering the groundwater flow has been developed. It is known that the groundwater flow affects the ability of heat extraction such as transient response and recovery of temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to simulate the dynamic behavior of the underground heat extraction system in order to evaluate the heat extraction rate. In this paper, the heat flow in the borehole, U-tube and subsurface layers with groundwater flow have been modeled by using the advective-diffusive equation, and the temporal change of temperature has been calculated based on Finite-Element Method (FEM). We analyzed a thermal response test (TRT) data and have clarified that the tool in this paper can simulate the heat flow in the layers associated with the groundwater flow and also represents the heat exchange between U-tube and layers. It has also been demonstrated that the simulator can examine the relationship between groundwater flow and apparent thermal conductivity, groundwater flow and temperature change of layers with time during heat extraction.

The purpose of present research is to estimate the degradation mechanism of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) by using combining non-destructive test and electrochemical measurement during loading test Mechanical degradation and chemically degradation were investigated by acoustic emission (AE) measurement system and electrochemical measurement, respectively. In the investigation of fracture process with AE amplitude distributions, high amplitude signal, middle amplitude signal and low amplitude signal correspond to vertical craking, delamination in the cathode, and vertical cracking in the elctrolyte respectively. It was demonstrated that the AE method enabled us to detect the above-mentioned mechanical damage and to determine the condition for the onset of the damage in the single cell.

An experimental apparatus has been developed which simulates pore-fluid induced slip on a preexisting fracture. Experiments conducted using the apparatus yield insights into the mechanisms of shear slip induced by fluid injection and relationship between slip behavior and fluid flow. The apparatus construction allows injection of pore fluid directly into a pre-existing fracture in a cylindrical rock sample. Confining pressures and pore pressures up to 25 MPa and 40 MPa, respectively, can be adjusted to impose different stress on the sample. A micro-mass flow meter enables precise measurement of volume of fluid flow into the fracture. Preliminary experimental results are presented which confirm the abilities of the apparatus. Preliminary experimental result shows a characteristic intermittent slip and fluctuation in fluid flow synchronizing with the intermittent slip, implying significant effects of pore fluid injected on the shear slip of a pre-existing fracture.

    More details Close

In geothermal development, fluid is injected into subsurface fractures in reservoirs to improve productivity. At that time, understanding tectonic stress is important to estimate the portion where the permeability is improved. Tectonic stress can be measured in a borehole, but it requires drilling of the borehole, and the measurement in the deep borehole is costly and time-consuming. In this presentation, the tectonic stress measurement method using induced AE (Acoustic Emission) is introduced, where fracture planes are estimated from accurately estimated AE source distribution and the estimated possible slip directions of the fracture planes.

Over 98% at the regeneration efficiency of the Regenerator must be made with the goal so that the thermal efficiency of Stirling engine may achieve over 30%. Though the regeneration efficiency is improved, as the volume of Regenerator is increased, and as the area of the heating surface is increased, on the other hand dead space volume and pressure loss increase, and they become the output lowering of the engine. It is a problem that the regeneration efficiency measures the temperature change of operative gas and matrix of the Regenerator inside. However, the accurate thermometry is not possible, when the working fluid is the gas, since the flow velocity of the gas is big for the responsibility of temperature sensor. Then, model test by the water was tried instead of operative gas in this study. Features of the experiment using the water are that the measurement of the temperature behavior is easy, because that it can decrease the flow velocity in the equal Reynold's number region and fact of the matrix in which the model length is done can be increased.

The seismic events, which were considered to be slow events, were detected by analyzing continuous waveform data measured in the Groningen gas field. Despite the depth of the earthquake source is thought to be around 3km-5km, events with a time duration around 30 seconds were included. When the source depth is about 3 km, the shear slip of the crack is generally several ms and the time duration of detected waveforms is several seconds general. Therefore, the event detected in this analysis seemed that the shear slip was more slowly than the normal AE. On the other hand, since the velocity structure of the field is composed of relatively low-velocity layers, it was found that detailed examination is required in consideration of such as the Q value.

We conducted hydraulic fracturing experiments in order to investigate the relationship between hydraulic fractures and induced microearthquakes. We monitored acoustic emissions during the experiments and compared the hypocenter distributions to fluid penetration regions that observed after the experiments. Fluid pressure history, fluid penetration region, acoustic emission activities, and their dominant mechanism significantly depended on the kind of rocks and dominant direction of preexisting fractures, revealing many important points that should be considered when estimating influence regions by microseismic activities.

We observed around 300 thousand of AE (Acoustic Emission) events by a high-resolution monitoring network close to the active front of a tabular mining stope being advanced northward at 1 km depth in the Cooke 4 Gold Mine in South Africa. The application of the double-difference relative location algorithm resolved seemingly continuous, dense cloud of AEs that extend about 20 m ahead of the stope front into several discrete, steeply dipping tabular clusters a few meters thick and 10-30 m in dip extent, separated by quiet intervals a few meters thick. The tabular clusters had a strike parallel to the stope face and a dip of around 65°, resembling commonly observed large shear fractures along the plane of maximum shear. These observations suggest that discrete tabular clusters of AEs represent macroscopically localized damage structures that formed in the highly stressed intact rock ahead of the stope face and may culminate in dynamic shear events.

Geological models and the properties of supercritical geothermal reservoirs are described with respect to supercritical geofluids, mechanical behaviors of reservoir rocks, crustal permeability and tectonic settings. Mechanical conditions at the elastic-plastic boundaries of granitic rocks indicate potentially exploitable supercritical geothermal resources. Tensile fracturing is possible even in ductile rocks, and some permeability-depth relations proposed for the continental crust show no drastic permeability reduction at the BDT (Brittle-Ductile Transition). The reservoir permeability (&gt;10^[-16] m^2) could be maintained even under supercritical conditions. The permeable-impermeable boundary of the crust and geothermal reservoirs were affected by water-rock interaction such as dissolution and precipitation of silica minerals. NE Japan is representative of an Island-Arc setting in a subduction system, and it is highly possible that exploitable supercritical geothermal resources may be located on and around the present volcanic front.

We have developed several different ultrasound sensors and carried out the experience using bone to confirm that it is possible to detect reflection wave from opposite surface of bone. We have investigated the reflection waves from the bottom of drilling hole, opposite surface of bone, multiple reflection between the bottom of drilling hole and sensor, and scattering waves. We have develop a filter to remove the signal induced by input pulse by using polynomial function. Three types of sensors with a center frequency of 3.5MHz, 10MHz and 15MHz were manufactured and used to detect the thickness of bone, and it has been confirmed that the sensor with a center frequency of 3.5MHz is better to detect the bone thickness from 1mm to 3mm. We are preparing for a document to obtain the patent of a monitoring system including ultrasound reflection method.

Drilling > 80 holes with a total length > 2.8 km in earthquake prone areas, conducted were multi-disciplinary studies at sites (at depths > 3km or with equivalent stress) at six South African gold mines in ever-larger scale. Microfracturing associated with a magnitude (M) 2 event as well as those in highly stressed rock mass at 1.0km depth at another mine were finely delineated and seismologically analyzed in ever-greater detail. A hole intersecting an M2 hypocenter allowed the constraint of stress. A technology was introduced that allowed to measure stress at ever-larger depths or in ever-larger magnitudes, which calibrated elastic stress modelling. Pre-seismic strain change was observed for a M0 event, which was one of the other outcomes that can be obtained only from our monitoring at the closest proximity of hypocenters.

A dense, 3-dimensional array of AE sensors with about 100-m spread was deployed in the rock mass near a mining stope at about 1-km depth in a South African gold mine. The area contained multiple geological faults. A huge number of microfractures were occurring almost exclusively either in the great proximity of fracture planes of geological faults or in the zone of high-differential stress ahead of the mining front. Relative abundance of small events was to a similar extent to natural earthquakes in the latter, but was extreme in the former. It has turned out that the latter population consists of several, discrete, large-scale (a few tens of meters), tabular clusters of a few meters thickness. Laboratory tests of rock samples from the mine showed that weak foliation affects the microfractures. Also, complexities of microfracture activity and the eventual through-going fracture were both shown to be affected by the orientation of the foliation with respect to the principal stress axis.

In modern geothermal heat extraction, artificial fractures are usually introduced in order to produce geothermal heat more efficiently and more massively. The artificial cracks are predominantly large in sedimentary rocks. In the present report, we model the artificial crack as a 3-D crack filled with fluid. Then we studied the dynamic responses of the 3-D fluid filled cracks, such as size, location and conductivity. A new method is proposed to estimate the factors listed above. The applicability to field data was checked.

I have carried out the development of the method for estimation of high permeable fracture and their distribution in geothermal reservoir based on the multiplet-clustering analysis, where the analysis of induced AE data, comparison of results of AE data analysis and logging data analysis, and development of a parameter to identify high permeable fractures in reservoir were performed. In this study, I first have analyzed the induced microseismic AE multiplet by using the Weibull distribution to clarify the stochastic property of event occurrence, and shown that the occurrence of similar microseismic events (AE multiplet events)is quasi-periodic rather than random, and I inferred it to be related to the fluid flow rate in fractures. I have also suggested a parameter using event energy, injected fluid volume and time interval of event occurrence, and examined the feasibility of parameter using the induced microseismic events during a hydraulic stimulation at Soult field, France.

I have carried out the research for the development of the method to evaluate the permeability of sunsurface fracture. I have taken form the method for the evaluation of permeability. On the basis of the results which obtained through the research before, I have shown that it is possible to estimate the direction of fluid flow and the growing process of permeable fracture system by the time lapse distribution of source location determined by the multiplet-clustering analysis. I have also revealed that the pressure gradient as well as the critical pore-pressure of fractures during the hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoir can be estimated by the integration of the tectonic stress field and the fracture orientation and the time lapse distribution of AE source location, where I used the induced AE data at the Soultz HDR field in France. I have also shown that it is difficult to estimate the velocity of pressure propagation because the number of events is insufficient number and the source does not distribute all over the reservoir. On the other hand, I have demonstrated that the degree of fluid flow in the reservoir can be evaluated by refining the increasing rate of seismic moment release and the increasing rate of source area. The dynamic behavior of subsurface fracture was also examined, where the relationship between the frequency band for identifying similar microearthquakes (multiplet) and the structures delineated by the source location of multiplet. As the results, I have developed the procedure to evaluate the fracture permeability in the geothermal reservoir on the basis of the precisely determined source location by the multiplet-clustering analysis, and also revealed the restriction on the evaluation.

In this research, we have examined the parameters for estimation of high permeable fracture by using induced AE multiplet, where the field data were analyzed and model experiment using granite rock specimen was also carried out in order to study the relation between the induced AE events and the permeable fractures. The relationships among AE occurrence, shear slip, flow rate and pressure in fracture has been investigated through the model experiments, where the shear slip was artificially induced using split rock specimen under the parameter controlled high stiffness system. On the other hand, the induced AE at Coper Basin in Australia and Soultz in France was analyzed and the relationships among the injection pressure, flow rate and AE occurrence were examined. The distribution of the critical pore-pressure for shear slip of fracture has been estimated at Soultz, and the pore-pressure propagation and the formation process of permeable fracture system has been examined. It has been revealed that the permeable fracture system in the reservoir is developed by the linkage of preexisting permeable fractures due to the shear slip of fractures which favorably oriented to the principal stress direction and easily caused shear slip. In addition, it has also been revealed that the pore-pressure spreads in few hundred meters in the reservoir without pressure drop and the pore-pressure exponentially declines as a function of distance from the outlet point in the injection well. On the basis of the above mentioned studies, we have proposed a measurement method for estimation of permeable fractures in reservoir by using the induced AE multiplets.

(a)Field Studies: Crosshole seismic measurement at Tohoku University Higashi-Hachimantai Field was carried out. Downhole airgun was used as a seismic source and signals transmitted through artificially pressurized fracture was recorded. The state of pressurization, location of source and detector were changed. (b)Analysis by the TFC/3DTFC method: The recorded signals in the field experiment were analyzed by the time-frequency coherency (TFC) and by the 3D-TFC methods. Some coherent components including direct arrivals, reflected phase and unknown coherent waves were discriminated. (c)Interpretation: Possible physics to generate coherent waves from pressurised fracture was investigated using theory of elastic wave.

Geothermal energy is one of the most potential energy source in future, because it is widely distributed on the earth, safe, clean and environmentally friendly to the earth. Engineered geothermal systems, which includes hot dry rock (HDR), hot wet rock (HWR) and enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), are promising for electrical power generation in future. However, behavior of reservoirs associated with hydraulic fracturing has not been clearly understood, and hence this brings uncertainty/risk in the development of engineered geothermal systems. In this project, microseismic techniques for delineation of structures inside the microseismic cloud was investigated, then informations from microseismicity was combined with geological information and rock mechanics to interpret/understand physics in the reservoir. Major results from this project are, 1. Data sets collected at Soutls, Fenton-Hill, Rosemanowes, Ogachi, and Hijiori were re-analyzed by super-resolution mapping techniques. Location and orientation of microscopic seismic structures were estimated and their behavior (slip, stress conditions etc.) were also estimated. Variation of super-resolution mapping techniques was investigated to reduce uncertainty/error in mapping. 2. Relationship between seismic activity and geological information including location and orientation of preexisting fracture was investigated by tests in laboratory simulating a shear slip of fracture in granite.

This project was carried out in the three phases described below. (1) Hardware development of the downhole tri-axial magnetic field measuring system was carried out. The basis of the system is the downhole tool developed by the NEDO under MITT, Japan. Fundamental experiment in air and in a borehole at Tohoku University experiment site at Higashi Hachimantai Geothermal field was achieved for understanding the tool characteristics. Theoretical tool response was calculated and directivity to electrical conductivity of the surround material was examined. (2) Independent response of in-phase and quadrate - phase components was experimentally shown. Theoretical approach to the method of simultaneous electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability logging was studied. Also, we found this technique is sensitive to the thin layer detection and precise determination of geological boundary. (3) A Cross-hole tomography technique was tested by using a low frequency downhole tool. The system use 2MHz-32MHz, which are intermediate frequency of conventional borehole radar and induction technique. We could show that this technique can be used in relatively conducting material. Throughout this project, we showed experimentally and theoretically that the dowohole tri-axial magnetic field measuring system can be used for simultaneous electrical conductivity ad magnetic permeability logging, and that it is useful for characterization of subsurface fracture classification.
