A network roaming system allows users to join the wireless or wired networks at various places where they visit. Authentication is a necessary process in the roaming system not only to restrict non-eligible users from network use but also to protect users from malicious activities by attackers. Since the authentication process is provided by remote servers in the current roaming systems, some use cases such as Public Wi-Fi in disaster-affected areas and In-Flight Wi-Fi on passenger aircrafts suffer from service interruption due to network disruptions. We developed earlier a disruption-tolerant system for Public Wi-Fi in order to realize secure user authentication and to maintain local network use in temporarily isolated areas affected by natural disasters. Following its underlying idea and architecture, we have developed two practical schemes of local authentication for large-scale Wi-Fi roaming systems, and designed a framework for In-Flight Wi-Fi. One is certificate-based local authentication using digital certificates. The other utilizes HMAC (Hash-based Message Authentication Code) and benefits from the simplicity of conventional ID/password-based authentication methods. The functionalities are tested using Proof-of-Concept systems.

In-Flight Wi-Fi today is suffering from various problems regarding security and usability. One of the obstacles is the disruption of the backhaul network for internet connection. Introducing a secure connection means like WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise, preferably combined with roaming capability, can solve most security problems and some usability issues. However, user authentication in the current roaming systems depends on the servers on the ground and suffers from network disruption. Since In-Flight Wi-Fi is becoming indispensable not only for internet connection but also for various in-flight services, user devices need to stay connected to the access points during the entire flight. A disruption-tolerant Public Wi-Fi system was proposed earlier to realize secure user authentication and to maintain local network use in temporary isolated areas affected by natural disasters. Based on this system, we have developed a user authentication system with roaming for continuous and secure In-Flight Wi-Fi. This paper provides an overview of prospective use cases and challenges, and proposes a certificate-based roaming system.

Several methods using features in frequency domains obtained by the Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT) and the Wavelet Transformation have been proposed so far for text region detection in images. The performances of the methods in the previous work were evaluated mainly by the final precision of text region extraction. However, the analyses and the comparisons with respect to the goodness of features themselves have not been so sufficient. This report proposes an analysis and comparison method using Fisher's discriminant analysis to get a better features and an unsupervised thresholding method to segment text and non-text. Better features can be obtained by choosing DCT coefficients in an appropriate frequency range. Experimental results indicate that the final precisions of text region extraction are improved by using the optimized features.

With the recent expanding application of the OCR, computers have to extract character patterns not only from the scanned document images but also from the various types of images including scene images. In this report, we first discuss the needs of developing the methods which can handle various types of images. We present a survey of character pattern extraction methods which have been designed separately according to the image type, and introduce some difficulties we must overcome. Finally, a unified character pattern extraction method is proposed. The method is based on the local multilevel thresholding and the region growing. It can extract small character patterns form scanned document images, and is also applicable to the scene images.

In-Flight Wi-Fi today suffers from various problems regarding security and usability. One of the biggest obstacles is the disruption of the internet connection to the ground. Introducing a secure connection means like WPA2 Enterprise, preferably combined with roaming, can solve most security problems and some usability issues. However, user authentication in the current roaming systems depends on the servers on the ground and suffers from network disruption. Since In-Flight Wi-Fi is becoming indispensable not only for internet connection but also for various in-flight services, user devices need to stay connected to the APs during the entire flight. We have developed earlier a disruption-tolerant Public Wi-Fi system to realize secure user authentication and to maintain local network use in temporary isolated areas affected by natural disasters. Based on this, we have developed a user authentication system with roaming for continuous and secure In-Flight Wi-Fi system. This presentation provides an overview of prospective use cases, problems, and the current development status.

Off-campus eduroam deployment has become popular in the last few years. Off-campus eduroam services provide students and staff with more opportunities for learning, education, and research in the digital age. In some countries, off-campus eduroam plays an important role for remote education and self learning amid COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, WBA OpenRoaming, launched in year 2020, has brought in a powerful means for making off-campus eduroam deployment a lot easier. This presentation provide an update of the off-campus and OpenRoaming deployment in Japan, and also explain the OpenRoaming onboarding process for each country.

Cityroam is an infrastructure for federated wireless LAN services and provides people with secured Public Wi-Fi. Cityroam has been in operation in Japan for a couple of years and the coverage is growing. This presentation introduces the Cityroam system and our latest activities of developing eduroam-on-NGH (Next Generation Hotspot). Cityroam is aimed at improving the security and usability of Public Wi-Fi by enabling Passpoint with international roaming and also at making eduroam adoption much easier. It also helps universities and schools to provide secure guest network services.

The user authentication process in the current public wireless LAN (WLAN) is dependent on always-on connection to the wide-area network. Network disruptions often lead to service interruptions even in local network use. We looked into a roaming environment in which many telecom operators provide mutual use of WLANs and have developed a new system that enables stable user authentication even during temporary/partial network disruptions. We have developed a certificate-based local authentication method that works in a large-scale roaming environment and also its operation method. The system works even when the back-haul network is disrupted in a disaster affected area, and enables various local services. The system is also useful in in-flight WLAN services.

Identity federation has been adopted in various web and network services including Public Wireless LAN (WLAN). Network disruptions often lead to service interruptions, even for local applications, since most identity federation systems depend on network connectivity. We have developed an automatic authentication network configuration method which works well even on dynamically changing networks such as Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). Local authentication method using client certificates has been combined with a WMN, and used for both access point and user authentications. The system works even when the back-haul network is disrupted in a disaster affected area, and enables various local services. The new system will also be useful for temporary and quick deployment of WLAN systems at conference/event sites as well as in affected areas.

We have developed an identity federation mechanism that realizes personalized high-level access controls based on the combination of policies provided from both the ID provider and the service provider. The federation system is specially designed for Wireless LAN (WLAN) roaming systems such as "eduroam," the world-wide academic WLAN roaming system, and other public WLAN services. We have also developed an access network architecture tolerant of network disruptions that could be caused under large-scale disasters by introducing some disaster- and fault-tolerant mechanisms.

We have developed some building-block technologies required for realizing wearable vision assistive devices that automatically detect text on paper documents, signboards, etc. in the environment, translate it into speech by Optical Character Recognition and Speech Synthesis, and present the contents to the visually-impaired users. The technologies include fast and precise automatic text region detection and tracking, fast pattern matching for real-time character recognition, and text location guidance using sound signals. We have also developed a prototype system, and obtained the knowledge about the usability and functions need to be improved.

サーバ・クライアント構成に基づく文字認識の利用形態について調査を行い、文書認識システムをウェブアプリケーション化する際の問題点について検討した。前年度に開発したHTTPを用いたインタフェースを元に、通信プロトコルを再設計した。また、文字・文書認識エンジンをウェブアプリケーション化するためのツールキット(前年度開発)に改良を加え、オープンソースのソフトウェアとして一般公開した。研究室内に設置したサーバ機の上で複数の文書認識サーバを動かし、世界のユーザへサービスを提供した。分散・協調型文書認識システムの実用性を調査するために、研究室のサーバにおける利用状況の詳細な分析を行った。その結果、サーバの利用率が約二年間で着実に伸びてきたこと、日常的に利用しているユーザがいることなどがわかり、文書のプライバシー保護が難しいにも関わらず、ウェブベースの文書認識システムには世界的に潜在需要があることを明らかにできた。また、サーバにアップロード(入力)される画像の種類を詳細分析し、ユーザが実に様々な種類の画像(写真を含む)を文字認識にかけようとしていることが明らかになった。これらの調査結果を論文にまとめ、国際会議IVCNZ2007で発表した。得られた知見は、今後の文字・文書認識の研究の方向性に大きな影響を与えると期待される。クライアント・サーバ構成に基づく文書認識サーバの応用先として、自律ロボットへの応用を検討し、移動しながら周囲の環境から自動的に文字領域を抽出するロボットのプロトタイプを開発した。このロボットは、オフィスでの利用や、盲導犬ロボットなどへの応用を想定したものである。研究成果を論文にまとめ、国際会議ICDAR2007で発表した。自律ロボットから文書認識サーバを利用するためのインタフェースの検討も行った。提案手法は、文字・文書認識の新しい応用分野を切り開くものである。

To construct a document recognition system with brushing-up ability by self-learning, we have basic results. 1.Integration of recognition algorithms : (1)To describe category clusters in the feature space, clusters of hypersphere, hyperellipse, parallelepiped and convex polyhedron are introduced and the base of analysis of cluster structure is given. By proposing a reliability measure, a method of integrating recognition results is given. A self-learning recognition system is proposed. (2)Some basic properties on integration methods using ensemble learning and on multiple classifiers system are investigated. 2.Recognition theory and system : (1)It is known that ICA is effective for feature extraction and PCA is effective for recognition. (2)The effect of positioning the origin for subspace method is investigated. (3)A method to analyze a bias of predictive distribution in pattern recognition and a method correcting the bias are proposed. (4)A platform for web-based OCR systems are constructed with function to search servers. 3.Layout analysis : (1)A recognition algorithm of line graph images in documents by tracing connected components and a speedup method of tracing are proposed. (2)A screen pattern removal method is proposed which is useful for character pattern extraction from high-resolution color document images. (3)String extraction methods from low-resolution scene images by digital camera or video are proposed. (4) A principle of voting to local feature points is proposed and it is applied to isolated character recognition.
文書認識システムの汎用性の向上と全自動化に関する研究

本研究の目的は、複雑なレイアウトの文書も取り扱えるような汎用性の高い文書画像解析処理の実現であった。まず文字行の配置方向を検出する手法について理論的・実験的に検討を行った。文書画像上の黒画素の連結成分に対する外接矩形の配置を局所的に評価し、画像の局所領域における文字行の傾きを検出する手法を開発した。既開発の文字行抽出処理(区分直線連結法)を併用して評価実験を行った結果、一枚の文書上の複数の文字行の方向が一致していない場合でも効率的かつ高精度な文字行の抽出ができることが確認された。本手法は漢字やカナ、アルファベットといった文字の種類に依存しない処理であり、実験により日本語・英語混在文書への適用も可能であることが示された。なお、日本語の文書では縦書きと横書きの文章領域が混在することがあり、文字行の正しい方向を検出する必要がある。文字行中の一部の文字をサンプルとして文字認識処理にかけ、文字の類似度を縦方向と横方向で比較することで、方向検出が可能となった。本処理と先の傾き検出の処理を組み合わせて、文字行の正しい配置方向を検出する系統的な手法を開発した。次に、複数の文字行の相対位置関係を評価することによって、文字行候補を結合し、文章ブロックを構成する手法を開発した。本手法では、文字行の高さと長さ、行間距離、重なりの割合といった、記述文字(言語)に依存しない局所的なパラメータのみを結合の評価に用いており、文書全体のレイアウトに関する事前知識をほとんど利用していない。その結果、矩形やL字形に限らず、非矩形の文章ブロックも抽出でき、文章領域と図・写真などが入り組むような複雑なレイアウトの文書も取り扱える処理が実現された。

本年度の研究では、当初の目的であった。完全自動文書認識システムを完成させるまでに至らなかったが、次の成果を得た。これらを基礎にして展開研究を計画している。 1.文字パターンの特徴量空間である196次元ベクトル空間において、各字種の特徴量の集まりを正2^N面体型特徴領域と2^N面体型特徴領域との共通部分として定め、字種間相互の特徴領域の重なりを調べた。2^N面体型特徴領域はマハラノビス距離による超球型特徴領域の近似であり、線形計画法を用いて重なりを調べるために導入した。調べた結果、1字種の特徴領域と重なる特徴領域を持つ字種数が平均79であることがわかった。これは、単純なマンハッタン距離を用いた正2^N面体型特徴領域だけによるものに較べて約1/5になっているが、まだ、重なりが大きいことを意味している。 2.文字の特徴領域の重なりが類似文字に起因することに着目し、類似文字であるかどうかの判定法を考え、類似文字間の識別法としてその相違部分を重視する方法を考案した。また、低品質文字の認識のため、動的重み付き単純類似度を考え、つぶれ度による文字品質の判定により、品質に応じた識別手法を適用することで、より高精度な認識ができることを明らかにした。 3.日本語文字列の生成確率モデルとして文字trigram-単語trigramの複合モデルを考え、これを用いて誤りを含む認識結果候補文字列からより正しいもの選択する手法を開発した。 4.文書レイアウト解析については、必ずしも長方形ではない文章ブロックを抽出する方法を考案し、実験により検証した。

東北大学情報シナジー機構と国立情報学研究所は、大学間で訪問者が相互に構内無線ネットワークを利用するための国際的な方式であるeduroam（エデュローム）に加入し、日本初の運用を開始しました。例えば、海外の大学の研究者が来日したとき、あるいは東北大の学生が世界中のeduroam加入大学を訪問するときに、訪問先の大学のネットワークにアクセスして、インターネットを利用することが可能になります。
