    Abstract As representative compositions of the mold flux used in the continuous casting of steel, the temperature and composition dependence of the thermal conductivity of alkali silicate glasses and melts was investigated in the range of 300–1700 K using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. MD simulations can exclude disturbances such as radiation, convection, and impurities, and extract only the effect of phonons on the thermal conduction. Thermal conductivity determined by the laser flash (LF) method was reported to be three times higher than that obtained by the unsteady hot wire (HW) method in the high‐temperature range of 1250–1550 K for 33.3Na2O–66.7SiO2 (mol%). This study shows that (1) the thermal conductivity estimated by MD simulations was closer to the experimental value of the LF method than those of the HW method above 1200 K, which suggests that the LF method is reliable and that the effect of radiation on the thermal conductivity is not significant. (2) The decrease in the thermal conductivity measured by the LF method in the range of 1250–1550 K was attributed to the decrease in the bulk modulus of the 33.3Na2O–66.7SiO2 melt. (3) In a series of Na2O–SiO2 melts, the sound velocity calculated by MD decreased with increasing Na2O content, which is consistent with Shiraishi's ultrasonic wave measurements.

    The crystallization process of low melting point CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO system inclusions during the continuous casting and hot rolling process greatly affects the deformability of inclusions. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallization characteristics of CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO system melts representing the typical oxide inclusions in Si–Mn deoxidized steels is systematically investigated. The continuous cooling transformation and time–temperature transformation experiments are carried out. The results reveal that the increase of Al2O3 contents restrains the crystallization process of the melt, whereas the crystallization tendency of the melt is promoted with the increase of MgO contents. The precipitated phases are predominately 2CaO·MgO·2SiO2 and 3CaO·MgO·2SiO2, and the primary crystalline phase is unaffected by the changes of Al2O3 and MgO contents. To obtain low melting point plasticized inclusions with limited crystallization ability, it is recommended to control the Al2O3 and MgO contents greater than 15 wt% and below 5 wt%, respectively. The isothermal treatment is suggested to be controlled within a proper temperature range (1175–1250 °C) to decrease the crystallization kinetics. The oxide system's viscosity change is the limiting kinetic factor in the crystallization process, and it can be utilized to predict the system's crystallization tendency.

    The viscosity of silicate melts is one of the most important physical properties for understanding high-temperature phenomena in magmatic systems and material processing. The effects of composition and temperature on viscosity have long been elucidated. Although iron ions are the main components of magmatic systems, their influence on viscosity remains unclear because the behavior of iron is complicated; iron ions have two redox states, Fe3+ and Fe2+. Here, we elucidate the viscosity of an iron-sodium-silicate system with a variety of iron redox states at temperatures close to its glass transition temperature (Tg). The redox states and structures of the samples were characterized using x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron x-ray total scattering, and density (molar volume) measurements. The viscosity increased (by more than four orders of magnitude) with an increase in the ratio of Fe3+ to total Fe (Fe3+/Fetot), whereas the temperature dependence of the viscosity was larger for glasses with a higher Fe3+/Fetot ratio at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature. The tendencies in viscosity and structural variation against the Fe3+/Fetot ratio support the consensus on the structural roles of Fe3+ and Fe2+ from previous studies: Fe3+ ions have a stronger tendency to behave as network formers than Fe2+ ions.

    Abstract The topology of amorphous materials can be affected by mechanical forces during compression or milling, which can induce material densification. Here, we show that densified amorphous silica (SiO2) fabricated by cold compression of siliceous zeolite (SZ) is permanently densified, unlike densified glassy SiO2 (GS) fabricated by cold compression although the X-ray diffraction data and density of the former are identical to those of the latter. Moreover, the topology of the densified amorphous SiO2 fabricated from SZ retains that of crystalline SZ, whereas the densified GS relaxes to pristine GS after thermal annealing. These results indicate that it is possible to design new functional amorphous materials by tuning the topology of the initial zeolitic crystalline phases.

    The solidification processes of super‐ and hyper‐duplex stainless steels (i.e., UNS S32750 and S 33 207) are investigated in situ by a high‐temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT‐CLSM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The variations of δ‐ferrite phase fraction during solidification are measured quantitatively. The results show that liquid L→δ‐ferrite transformation first occurs at a certain degree of supercooling during the solidification process of steel. UNS S3DSS 3207 with a higher Cr content can result in a higher nucleation temperature and faster growth of δ‐ferrite compared to those of UNS S332750 steel. Moreover, both the liquidus (TL) and solidus temperatures (TS) are increased with the increasing Cr content, while TL increases greater than TS. Electron microscopies are used to quantify the fraction and composition of each phase. Scheil equation is employed to predict the distribution behavior of the main alloying elements in the solidification process, and the predicted results are consistent with the experimental findings. This study aims to provide real‐time experimental insights into the solidification kinetics of state‐of‐the‐art high‐alloy‐grade duplex steels and benefits for controlling the casting process in the real production of stainless steels.

    The effect of alumina addition on the viscosity of silicate melts is strongly related to the type of non-framework cations; however, the origin of these interactions is not well understood. In this study, we measured the viscosity change in selected alkali disilicate (R2O·2SiO2, R: Na or Li) melts by varying the AlO1.5/SiO2 molar ratio (AlO1.5 = 0–16.8 mol%) within the 1373–1823 K temperature range. We observed that as the molar ratio increased, sodium silicate viscosity increased, whereas lithium silicate viscosity was not affected. Aluminum-27 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the quenched glasses indicated that the aluminum cations in both types of alkali silicate melts were mostly present as AlO4 tetrahedra. In contrast to sodium-containing systems, the shear strain on the AlO4 tetrahedron was greater for lithium aluminosilicate glass. Our findings indicated that the degree of shear strain on AlO4 plays an essential role in controlling the viscosity of aluminosilicate systems.

    The effect of external hydrostatic pressure on the hydrothermal synthesis of the microporous silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-18 has been explored. The crystallization of the SAPO-18 phase is inhibited at 150 °C under high pressures (200 MPa) when using relatively diluted synthesis mixtures. On the contrary, the use of concentrated synthesis mixtures allowed SAPO-18 to be obtained in all the studied conditions. The obtained solids were characterized with XRD, SEM, ICP-AES, TG and 27Al and 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results highlight the importance of the external pressure effect on the hydrothermal synthesis of molecular sieves and its influence on the interaction between the organic molecule and the silicoaluminophosphate network.

    &lt;p&gt;The thermal effusivities of CaO-SiO&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;-Al&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O&lt;SUB&gt;3&lt;/SUB&gt;-R&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O (R=Li, Na, K) melts were measured by the front-heating front-detection laser flash method. The thermal conductivity was determined from the thermal effusivity, specific heat capacity and density. The specific heat capacity was evaluated based on the additive law, using the liquid state of respective oxides in literature values. The density was measured using Archimedes principle at room temperature in a glassy state. As a result, it was found that the thermal conductivity of CaO-SiO&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;-Al&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O&lt;SUB&gt;3&lt;/SUB&gt; melt was lower than those of CaO-SiO&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;-Al&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O&lt;SUB&gt;3&lt;/SUB&gt;-R&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O (R=Li, Na, K) melts. It was also found that the NBO/T dependence of thermal conductivities for CaO-SiO&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;-Al&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O&lt;SUB&gt;3&lt;/SUB&gt;-R&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;O (R=Li, Na, K) melts was negative. On the other hand, there was no clear relation between the thermal conductivity and the viscosity.&lt;/p&gt;

    Silicon nitride is a typical engineering ceramics as structural materials for high-temperature or functional applications. However, the fabrication of silicon nitride costs a lot because the densification of silicon nitride needs vast energy to get high-temperature of 2073∼2273 K and special apparatus such as a hot-press. Therefore, it is difficult to use silicon nitride in large amount. Consequently, lowering of the fabrication cost is essential to apply silicon nitride to wider fields.<BR>We propose a new process of the liquid phase sintering of silicon nitride using an oxynitride sintering aid which consisted of SiO2, MgO and preliminarily added α-Si3N4 and was fired at temperature up to 2073 K. The α-Si3N4 green compacts with the oxynitride sintering aid were sintered at 1873 K for 64-512 min under 0.1 MPa nitrogen pressure, and fully dense β-Si3N4 ceramic was fabricated after 512 min sintering. This sintering temperature is about 200 K lower than that of a conventional method.

    We have investigated crystallization behavior of cordierite-based oxynitride glass made by melting procedure of the powder mixture of cordierite and silicon nitride. The results clearly indicated that two polymorphs exist, a stable &alpha; form that has significant low coefficient of thermal expansion and a metastable &mu; form. TTT diagram of the crystallization of &alpha; form shows a typical C-shape curve that has a nose around 1420 K, above 1373 K, the &alpha; form can be directly obtained by isothermal crystallization of the oxynitride glass and the &mu; form inverts to the &alpha; form at temperatures below 1273 K. The rate of the crystallization of cordierite-based oxynitride glass is found to be smaller in comparison with that of the oxide system, which can be explained with the rate-controlling step of the formation of the &alpha;-cordierite grain and the diffusivity in the oxynitride glass. We also have fabricated &alpha;-cordierite ceramics that have the nitrogen content of 1.55mass% (2.2at%) which is revealed to be much smaller than that of the batch composition (5mass% (7.0at%) ) , which is due mainly to the decomposition reaction of nitrogen in the oxynitride melts and glasses during heat-treatments. However, the fabricated nitrogen-containing &alpha;-cordierite ceramics had the coefficient of thermal expansion of 10-7 K-1, which is comparable with the oxide &alpha;-cordierite ceramics. Moreover, the bending strength and the Young's modulus of the &alpha;-cordierite ceramics were found to be significantly improved with adding nitrogen, which would be attributed to the incorporation of nitrogen into the microstructure of &alpha;-cordierite.

    Viscosity of molten oxide is one of the most important physical properties, which can control the process of metals production and glass-ceramics fabrication at high temperature. However, the viscosity data that have been accumulated since mid-twentieth century is still not enough for trouble-less operation of the production sequences mentioned above. In present paper, we intend to review the definition, and the measuring methods of the viscosity of molten oxides, and also to demonstrate the latest results that we have built. Especially, the addition effect of alkali oxides on the viscosity of alumina containing CaO-SiO_2 based molten oxides, and the non-Newtonian behavior and the crystallization effect on the viscosity of CaO-SiO_2-R_2O molten oxides under liquidus are presented.

    The role of the melting treatment of the solid waste has become more and more important to reduce the volume of solid waste because of the lack of land fill sites. However, it is required, for the trouble-free operation of the plants, to provide the physico-chemical properties of the slag generated from the melting treatment of municipal solid waste(MSW). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the crystallization behavior of the MSW slag using Hot-Thermocouple method. Additionally, the effect of additive oxides on the crystallization behavior of the synthetic slag and the MSW slag also have been investigated. As a result, Time-Temperature-Transition curves of the crystallization MSW slag depended on the chemical composition of the slags strongly. Appearances of the quenched slags were colored and transparent glasses. Moreover, it was found that TiO2 and Li2O additives accelerated the crystallization of the slag.

    This research was performed with the aim of elucidating the elution mechanism of the constituent elements of silicate substances. Elution tests were conducted on a total of 15 types of samples in the CaO-SiO2 binary system and the ternary system in which MgO, FeO, CaF2 or Al2O3 was added to the binary system, and the samples were analyzed by various spectroscopic analyses. As a result, it was found that the silicate skeleton structure and network structure have a great influence on the Ca elution, which leads to an increase in pH. It was also clarified that the rate-determining step of Ca elution is the diffusion of Ca ions in the Ca-depleted layer near the surface. As described above, the elution behavior of the silicate substance into water was elucidated, and the effectiveness of the addition of the third component for suppressing the elution was shown.

    The purpose of this study was to obtain fundamental knowledge leading to the establishment of the technique of refractory metals recovery from molten salt with electroplating by comparing the local structure in the molten state with the results of the electrolytic recovery experiment. The relationship between the molten salt composition and the melting temperature and the local structure was investigated and clarified based on the data obtained by the in-situ measurement in the high temperature molten state mainly applying X-ray absorption spectroscopy. It has been found that, by using a molten salt of mixed halide composition in which a part of the low melting point fluoride is substituted with chloride, a large structure is decomposed and metal can be recovered even under relatively low temperature conditions.

    Physical properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity) of silicate liquids and their glasses are important to control the high temperature processes (e.g., glass making and pyrometallurgy). However, it is still difficult to understand the mechanism of property change with a variation in chemical composition because of their multicomponent system. In the present project, viscosity and thermal conductivity of multicomponent aluminosilicate melts and glasses were evaluated. Also, the local structure in the neighborhood of cations in network region and their breakage region were analyzed spectroscopically. It is found that the physical properties should be influenced by coordination number of silicon and aluminum cations in the network structure.

    三元系CaO-Na_2O-SiO_2の代表的組成であるNa_2O-2CaO-3SiO_2(NC2S3)と2Na_2O-CaO-3SiO_2(N2CS3)ガラスを作成し、白金基板上での過冷却液体からの凝固過程の直接観察を行った。両組成ともに、近年のNMR測定よりSiO_4四面体周囲のケイ素イオンの数に分布があり、安定相と準安定相が晶出することが予想されたが、安定相のみ結晶化した。また、最大過冷度はN2CS3で100K程度だったが、NC2S3では320Kと大きく過冷した。

    The element-selective structural analysis methods were used to characterize the local structures in several phosphate compounds with the NASICON-type structure. They are promising materials for lithium ion batteries, as they reveal superior charge-discharge characteristics. The chemical state in Li2NaV2(PO4)3 samples of a candidate cathode during the charge-discharge was analyzed by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. X-ray anomalous scattering was used to analyze the middle-range order structure in NASICON-type glass-ceramics, which are utilized as electrolytes in solid state batteries. Influences of foreign elements on the local structure around aluminum and phosphorus in these samples were also analyzed by NMR. These results were discussed coupled with their electrochemical properties.

    The effect of addition of K2O, Na2O, CaF2 and Al2O3 on thermal conductivity of molten silicate was investigated by using the front heating-front detection laser flash method. The thermal conductivities of molten silicates showed insignificant temperature dependence in liquid region. The measured thermal conductivity values decreases with increasing value of NBO/T(Non-bridging Oxygen ions/Tetrahedrally coordinated cation). The network structure of silicate melts was modeled in three dimensions to estimate the effect of decoupling behavior of silicate melts on thermal conduction through silicate network chains.The effect of amount of non-bridging oxygen on thermal conductivity of the 3D model of silicate melts was obtained.The obtained values of thermal conductivity gradually decreased with increasing NBO/T. This tendency agrees with that for the measured thermal conductivity.
