    Abstract The chirality and chiroptical response of materials have attracted significant attention for their potential to introduce the new science of light-matter interactions. We demonstrate that collective mode formation under modal coupling between localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) with a chiral arrangement and Fabry–Pérot (FP) nanocavity modes can induce chiroptical responses. We fabricated a cluster of isotropic gold nanodisks with a chiral arrangement (gold nano-windmills, Au-NWs) on the FP nanocavities of TiO2 and Au film. The differential absorption of the Au-NWs coupled with the FP nanocavities under left- and right-handed circularly polarized light irradiations in the far field was significantly enhanced compared with the differential absorption without the FP nanocavities. Far- and near-field analyses by numerical simulation revealed that the Au-NWs coupled with the FP nanocavities formed a collective mode in the near field, and the collective mode represented the chiroptical response in the far field. The light field with the large helicity, can be used in chiral light-matter interactions. The concept of collective mode formation using isotropic metal nanodisks coupled with FP nanocavities provides a platform for controlling complex light fields. Graphical abstract

    Abstract Nucleation from an aqueous solution is an important step in crystallization which controls the physicochemical properties of crystalline materials. Although dense liquid droplets are considered as a precursor of a crystal in the two-step nucleation model, their actual role is unclear. Our in-situ microscopic observations of the crystallization of DL-alanine from a dense liquid droplet trapped by laser tweezers show that the liquid droplets play the role of a substrate facilitating heterogeneous nucleation rather than a precursor of a crystal.

    Studies on chiral spectroscopy have recently demonstrated strong enhancement of chiral light-matter interaction in the chiral near-field of Mie resonance in high-refractive-index dielectric nanostructures by studies on chiral spectroscopy. This situation has motivated researchers to demonstrate effective chiral photosynthesis under a chiral near-field beyond circularly polarized light (CPL) as a chiral source. However, the effectivity of the chiral near-field of Mie resonance for chiral photosynthesis has not been clearly demonstrated. One major challenge is the experimental difficulty in evaluating enantiomeric excess of a trace amount of chiral products synthesized in the near-field. Here, by adopting sodium chlorate chiral crystallization as a phenomenon that includes both synthesis and the amplification of chiral products, we show that crystallization on a Mie-resonant silicon metasurface excited by CPL yields a statistically significant large crystal enantiomeric excess of ∼18%, which cannot be achieved merely by CPL. This result provides implications for efficient chiral photosynthesis in a chiral near-field.

    Abstract Experimentally demonstrating the existence of waters with local structures unlike that of common water is critical for understanding both the origin of the mysterious properties of water and liquid polymorphism in single component liquids. At the interfaces between water and ices Ih, III, and VI grown/melted under pressure, we previously discovered low- and high-density unknown waters, that are immiscible with the surrounding water. Here, we show, by in-situ optical microscopy, that an unknown water appears at the ice V–water interface via spinodal-like dynamics. The dewetting dynamics of the unknown water indicate that its characteristic velocity is ~ 90 m/s. The time evolution of the characteristic length of the spinodal-like undulation suggests that the dynamics may be described by a common model for spinodal decomposition of an immiscible liquid mixture. Spinodal-like dewetting dynamics of the unknown water transiently showed anisotropy, implying the property of a liquid crystal.

    We have successfully elucidated that oxygen evolution was induced as a result of water oxidation in the photoelectric conversion system which employs gold nanostructures showing localized surface plasmon (LSP) as an optical antenna. It was also clarified that the water oxidation is induced at a restricted nanospace near gold/semiconductor/water interface, which were visualized by photoelectrochemical polymerization. These principles have developed artificial photosynthesis, so that overall water splitting and ammonia synthetic systems were successfully constructed. On the other hand, we have clarified that quadrupole plasmon resonances and optical antennae utilizing strong coupling between LSP and molecular system shows efficient light confinement function, which were studied by the developed time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy in this study. Furthermore, we have successfully developed all solid state plasmonic photovoltaic cell using nickel oxide as a hole transport layer.

    生体内に於いては、分子が特異的な相互作用により超分子構造を構築し、それらがさらに複合化、組織化することでより高次の超分子構造を形成し、様々な機能、物性を発現している。これらの各分子単独では発揮し得ない機能が生命を維持していく上で必要不可欠である。本研究では、分子の移動方向を規制することにより生体が様々な機能を発現させることに成功していることに注目し、人工系でのこのように運動方向の制御された系を構築し、生体系のシステムを化学の観点から解明することをきわめて重要であると位置づけている。その達成には環状分子と軸分子が非共有結合によって連結されたロタキサン状化合物を生体系モデルとしたアプローチ方法が、最も簡単でかつ独創的が高いと考えられる。2位にメチル基を導入したピリジニウム基をロタキサンの軸分子の二つの包接部位(ステーション)間に導入するこにより、環状分子であるα-シクロデキストリン並進方向或いは速度を制御することに成功した。二つのステーション部位の個々の熱力学安定性はほとんど変わらないのにもかかわらず、シクロデキストリンの進行方向と後退方向の速度には2倍程度もの差がみられた。このことはロタキサン上の環状分子の進行方向を速度論的に制御できた例と言える。このような挙動はシクロデキストリン及び軸分子の非対称で剛直な性質に由来すると考えられる。以上のことから、輪が一方向に並進するロタキサンの合成に成功した。
