Abstract Non-equilibrium Pd–Ru alloys were synthesized by leaching quasicrystal (icosahedral quasicrystal, IQC: Al71Pd19Ru10) and approximants (3/2 approximant, P40: Al72Pd16.4Ru11.6, 1/1 approximant, C1: Al70.4Pd14.7Ru14.9) of Al–Pd–Ru alloys with 20 wt% NaOH aqueous solution. The Pd-Ru alloys were investigated using XRD and HAADF-STEM, which showed that Pd and Ru were mixed and formed a non-equilibrium state (atomic ratio: 0.9 < Pd/Ru < 2). The Pd–Ru alloy obtained by leaching of P40 phase was found to exhibit high catalytic performance toward CO oxidation than Pd and Ru catalysts obtained by leaching of Al3Pd (decagonal quasicrystal) and Al13Ru4 (decagonal approximant), respectively (i.e., the alloying effect). Consequently, Al-Pd-Ru quasicrystals and approximant alloys are found to be useful precursors to obtain the non-equilibrium Pd-Ru alloys.

Abstract Self-similarity is a key characteristic of quasicrystalline tilings. The similarity ratio can be an n-th power of the irrational scaling unit associated with the relevant non-crystallographic Bravais class, where n is a natural number (e.g., 1, 2, …). The Ammann-Kramer-Neri tiling is a famous quasicrystalline tiling with icosahedral symmetry based on acute and obtuse rhombohedra. It has however remained underexplored in view of its self-similarity, since any attempt to find substitution rules has by far been hindered by the large similarity ratio of no less than τ3, where τ is the golden mean. We hereby illustrate a new approach to tackle this issue by introducing an auxiliary tiling that combines the rhombohedral tiling and its crystallographic dual supported on the body-centre positions. The vertices of this “dualized” tiling arise from the cut through the same kind of acceptance domain as that of the rhombohedral tiling, namely rhombic triacontahedron, attached to every point of the six-dimensional body-centred icosahedral Bravais lattice. Eleven kinds of polyhedra, nine out of which are tetrahedra, are identified as prototiles. This new tiling admits self-similarity with τ being the similarity ratio.

The atomic structures of three cubic approximants (cAPs), Y12.7Cd61.8Mg25.5 [2/1 cAP with space group Pa <overline>3</overline>, a = 25.0654 (1) Å] and Er12.5Cd72.0Mg15.5 [2/1 cAP with Pa <overline>3</overline>, a = 24.9658 (1) Å], and Y14.5Cd66.1Mg19.4 [1/1 cAP with Im <overline>3</overline>, a = 15.4577 (1) Å], were investigated using X-ray structure analysis. The two 2/1  cAPs were found to be isostructural to the binary 2/1 cAP, YbCd5.8, which is composed of two building units, namely Tsai-type rhombic triacontahedron (RTH) cluster and double-Friauf polyhedron (DFP). The 1/1 cAP, in contrast, was found to be isostructural to the binary 1/1 cAP, YbCd6, which is composed solely of the RTH cluster. The refined structure models of the three cAPs exhibit substitutional disorders due to the Mg content that enters into Cd sites of the parent binary cAPs. In addition, in the 2/1 cAPs, the Y3(Er3) site on the third icosahedron shell of the RTH cluster and two positions inside DFP, Y5(Er5) sites, are partially mixed with Mg. Moreover, characteristic positional disorders owing to orientational disorder in the first shell of the RTH cluster is observed in all the three cAPs. A close relationship between the occupational disorder of the Y3(Er3) and Y5(Er5) sites in 2/1 cAPs and the elemental distribution in their first coordination shells is revealed.

Bicontinuous cubic structures in soft matter consist of two intertwining labyrinths separated by a partitioning layer. Combining experiments, numerical modelling and techniques in differential geometry, we investigate twinning defects in bicontinuous cubic structures. We first demonstrate that a twin boundary is most likely to occur at a plane that cuts the partitioning layer almost perpendicularly, so that the perturbation caused by twinning remains minimal. This principle can be used as a criterion to identify potential twin boundaries, as demonstrated through detailed investigations of mesoporous silica crystals characterized by diamond and gyroid surfaces. We then discuss that a twin boundary can result from a stacking fault in the arrangement of inter-lamellar attachments at an early stage of structure formation. It is further shown that enhanced curvature fluctuations near the twin boundary would cost energy because of geometrical frustration, which would be eased by a crystal distortion that is experimentally observed.

A general construction principle of inflation rules for decagonal<br /> quasiperiodic tilings is proposed. The prototiles are confined to be polygons<br /> with unit edges. An inflation rule for a tiling is the combination of an<br /> expansion and a division of the tiles, where the expanded tiles can be divided<br /> arbitrarily as far as the set of prototiles is maintained. A certain kind of<br /> point decoration processes turns out to be useful for the identification of<br /> possible division rules. The method is capable of generating a broad range of<br /> decagonal tilings, many of which are chiral and have atomic surfaces with<br /> fractal boundaries. Two new families of decagonal tilings are presented; one is<br /> quarternary and the other ternary. Properties of the ternary tilings with<br /> rhombic, pentagonal, and hexagonal prototiles are investigated in detail.

A new class of self-similar ordered structures with non-crystallographic<br /> point symmetries is presented. Each of these structures, named<br /> superquasicrystals, is given as a section of a higher-dimensional &quot;crystal&quot;<br /> with recursive superlattice structures. Such structures turn out to be<br /> limit-quasiperiodic, distinguishing themselves from quasicrystals which are<br /> quasiperiodic. There exist a few real materials that seem to be promising<br /> candidates for superquasicrystals.

We have devised a general algorithm for classifying audit data into clusters associated with different types of network activities, in view of developing a more robust way of profiling network entities for intrusion detection. The method is based on the aggregation of the network hosts. The capability of the algorithm is examined by analyzing some log data of SNORT. A probable advantage of our algorithm lies in its ability to discern distributed attacks more effectively than any of the existing algorithms.

Single point, sender based control does not adapt or scale well for multicast delivery. For applications, such as group video or teleconferencing a low total cost multicast tree is required. In this article we present a destination driven algorithm to minimize the total tree cost of multicast tree in a dynamic situation for the whole session duration. In this heuristic approach we considered the staying duration of participants are available at the time of joining. The performance of our algorithm is analyzed through extensive simulation and evaluated against several other existing dynamic multicast routing and also against one well known near optimum heuristic algorithm used for solving Steiner tree problem. We have further tested our algorithm using erroneous information given by the joining participants. Simulation results shows that it performs equally well even when the range of error is considerably high, which proves the robustness of our algorithm.

In this report, we present recent research effort and progress on network monitoring at the JGN (Japan Gigabit Network) Tohoku University office. In order to achieve a scalable collection of operational information within a large-scale computer network, distributed network monitoring system would be inevitable. We describe the present status of research on two key technologies, distributed collection techniques of operational information, and the integration techniques of the collected information. We also present the network information visualization system, JaNI, which has been developed at the JGN office and dedicated to provide information regarding the network even to the users.

We have studied microstructure and catalytic properties for leaching Al-base intermetallic compounds. It has been clear the microstructure after leaching is dominated by oxidation ability of the metals formed intermetallic compounds with Al. A lamellar Fe3O4/Pt/Fe3O4 prepared by leaching Al-Pt-Fe alloy exhibited significant catalytic activity and selectivity upon steam reforming of methanol (SRM). The Pt and Fe3O4 were primarily responsible for the catalysis of the decomposition of methanol and water gas shift reaction, respectively. These two reactions work together in a complementary way to facilitate the overall SRM reaction. We demonstrate that a composite structure is available to couple two separate reactions to obtain a new catalytic function. We developed Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst with high activity upon CO oxidation, prepared by leaching an Al-Fe-Pt alloy with a minute amount of Pt and a new process to synthesize a composite catalyst Cu/CeO2/Ag by oxidation of amorphous alloy.

It has been found that selective leaching of Al on ternary Al alloys facilitates formation of nonequilibrium phases composed of remaining elements. This process can force the formation of non-equilibrium states which could no reached by melt-spinning method. By applying this process, we found that PdNi nanoparticles formed as a product of leached Al-Pd-Ni alloy showed high activity over CO oxidation reaction comparable with Pt. In summary, we have demonstrated that the leaching is not only a process synthesizing catalysts but also an available process for preparing nonequilibrium phases.

PdZn shows comparable catalytic selectivity to Cu in steam-reforming of methanol (SRM)reaction reflecting their similar electronic structures near the Fermi level (E_F). First-principles slab calculations for M-Zn (M=Pd, Ni, Pt)reveal that alloying with Zn leads to drastic change in the d-band width of M elements and it is essential for a similar electronic structure to Cu. The reduction of the d-band width is a consequence of the missing M-M pair and the lattice distortion. Measurements for SRM, CO and H_2 adsorptions have been performed for alloy powders of M_<50> Zn_<50> intermetallic compounds and M/ZnO samples and has been verified that chemical properties are expected from calculated electronic density of states (DOS). Unsupported mesoporous intermetallic NiZn and PdZn catalysts are successfully prepared by means of immersion alloying process. The surface areas of resultant alloy catalysts reached over ~ 20 m^2/g. The catalytic properties for steam reforming of methanol (SRM)were completely different from the original unsupported porous Ni and Pd, where the decomposition of methanol and the SRM occurred preferentially on NiCu and PdZn. In terms of selectivity of the reaction, NiCu is very similar to Pd and their similarity in valence DOSs was verified, indicating availability of the idea developed in the present research.
