Abstract: This paper evaluates the impact of creating various multimedia formats, particularly Metaverse worlds, on the intercultural understanding of students in international collaborative presentations. The study leverages a “Metaverse International Virtual Exchange” course, using virtual reality (VR) technology to bridge cultural gaps among students from diverse backgrounds. It examines how tools such as images, videos, 360-degree videos, and Metaverse environments contribute to cross-cultural learning. A comparative analysis highlights the qualitative and quantitative effectiveness of these tools, with a focus on Metaverse worlds as the most potent medium for fostering deep cultural understanding. The paper also addresses the challenges and limitations associated with Metaverse content creation, proposing solutions based on student feedback.

This research explores the impact of utilizing Metaverse worlds in an international virtual exchange course designed to foster intercultural understanding. In the “Multicultural Communication” course at Tohoku University, domestic and international students created and presented virtual cultural experiences using the Metaverse. The study examined how these immersive environments affected the memorability of presentations, focusing on two key research questions: (1) whether Metaverse elements enhance memorability, even as their “novelty” and “rarity” diminish, and (2) the proportion of students who attributed their memory retention to the use of Metaverse technology. Results indicated that groups utilizing Metaverse worlds were consistently ranked higher for memorability, with 65% of total votes citing Metaverse elements as the reason for their memorability. Interactive and immersive features, such as the ability to explore virtual spaces and autonomy over their own perspective, were critical factors in enhancing memory retention. Additionally, most students cited the use of Metaverse worlds as a key factor in their recollection of presentations. These findings suggest that Metaverse technology not only provides a unique platform for intercultural learning but also enhances the memorability of educational content.

This study explores the use of Generative AI (GenAI) in student-led Metaverse world creation within an international virtual exchange course involving 34 students from 10 countries. GenAI was utilized to enhance audience engagement and stimulate idea generation, facilitating a more streamlined and creative project development process. However, challenges arose in implementing AI-generated ideas, especially for beginners. The findings emphasize the potential of GenAI and XR technologies in fostering intercultural understanding and collaboration, while highlighting the need for improved prompt design to support novice learners.

This study examines the potential of learner-created Metaverse worlds to enhance audience engagement in international collaborative presentations. While online conferencing tools enable global interaction, HyFlex learning environments incorporating the Metaverse have been shown to be more effective in fostering communication and engagement. However, research on the impact of Metaverse-based presentations on audience engagement remains limited. A survey was conducted in an Intercultural Communication course with 40 students from 15 countries. Participants used various multimedia formats—images, videos, 360-degree videos, and Metaverse worlds—to create presentations. Engagement was measured based on Mercer & Dörnyei’s (2020) four principles: audience-focused design, emotional investment, curiosity stimulation, and active participation. Results from 28 valid responses indicate that Metaverse worlds consistently received the highest engagement scores across all criteria. These findings suggest that learner-created Metaverse worlds significantly enhance audience engagement, making them an effective tool for international collaborative learning and intercultural education.

We examine factors that influence the students’ memorability of the presentations given in the Metaverse International collaborative learning class, where students work in groups to give presentations to promote cross-cultural understanding. The results show that the students chose the presentation of the group using Metaverse World as the most memorable, with the "Metaverse World" being the reason.

Here is the text from the abstract portion of the image: > "It is difficult for Japanese learners to understand the meaning and usage of adverbs, only through the provided translated meanings in textbooks. To understand the meaning of adverbs, further explanation or picture cards are usually needed. Furthermore, vocabulary (which includes adverbs) is mainly taught in kanji class. However, many adverbs are typically not written in kanji, so it is difficult to give appropriate examples and instruction. Hence, some advanced level students are not good with adverbs. This paper aims to find and present methods of teaching adverbs. As a preliminary stage, it is necessary to investigate how and which adverbs are presented in Japanese textbooks. This will make it clearer what to do in the future for the development of teaching methods. Therefore, I gathered adverbs from several Japanese textbooks and investigated how and which adverbs are presented in Japanese textbooks. > As a result of the investigation, the following was clarified, there are few explanations of meanings and usage, examples of adverbs in sentences, auxiliary teaching materials such as picture cards, and exercise problems. Also, it turned out that the adverbs do not overlap so much in each proficiency level. It is possible that research on adverbs to be learned in each level is not very well developed. Based on this paper's findings, it is suggested that further research and development of adverb teaching methods and materials is necessary."

This paper presents a teaching method in which students proactively participated in classroom management utilizing multimedia teaching materials carried out at the University of Santiago in Chile. At the University of Santiago, students study the Japanese language for five years. However, due to a curriculum change, the level of achievement at the time of graduation was low. Therefore, a method of teaching that could offer a more efficient and pleasant learning experience with faster progress was needed. The students themselves created the multimedia teaching materials, and taught each other using them. This paper shows that using multimedia teaching materials was effective for improving learners’ abilities and motivation. Finally, the participation in classroom management by the students themselves will lead to further enhancement and consolidation of their skills.

This paper is a report on educational activities related to the lecture given by a guest speaker at the University of Santiago of Chile, where students study the Japanese language for five years, and are later awarded the title of "translator" upon graduation. However, their competence as translators/interpreters is not yet sufficient to become fully qualified professionals because a specialized knowledge of economy, diplomacy and other areas is also necessary, yet it is only possible to acquire such theoretical and practical skills through interaction with members of Japanese companies and organizations as well as through regional exchange. For that reason we invited a guest lecturer, who worked in the field of economics, and asked him to deliver a lecture on economic relations between Japan and Chile. Preparatory activities and post-activities were conducted so that the students could make the best of the lecture. They could later ask questions and interact with the guest lecturer in an informal gathering, which gave them an opportunity to consider what skills might be required of them in their future careers.

This study examines the impact of introducing the Metaverse World Creation Package (MWCP) in the "Multicultural Communication" course at Tohoku University. The implementation of MWCP significantly increased student participation in Metaverse world creation, rising from 35% to 100%, while the proportion of HMD-compatible worlds by students improved from 11% to 100%. Key features, particularly Grabbable objects and multimedia elements (Videos and background music), were identified as essential in enhancing presentation quality and audience engagement. Students highlighted increased interactivity, enriched cultural content, and improved HMD usability as areas for future development. The findings suggest that MWCP effectively mitigates technical barriers and fosters immersive learning experiences. Further refinements are needed to optimize its functionality, particularly in enhancing user interactivity and addressing sensory discomfort associated with HMD use.

By engaging multilingual and multicultural students in collaborative learning within the metaverse, the project aims to foster intercultural understanding and promote cultural exchange. It offers learning opportunities that transcend geographical boundaries, enhancing presence and immersion while nurturing a global perspective. Moreover, this initiative aligns with Japan’s “J-MIRAI” program and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s (MEXT) "Guidelines for Remote Education Implementation," making it a meaningful practice in the internationalization of education. The metaverse helps lower psychological barriers and overcomes issues related to camera use, thereby increasing student satisfaction and deepening interaction and mutual understanding. Ultimately, this metaverse-based learning approach expands opportunities for cultural experiences and promotes the fusion of international education and emerging technologies.
