Abstract In the field, locally applied fluid pressure can initiate fault slip, which may expand unstably over a wide area under certain conditions, generating elastic waves and inducing earthquakes. Therefore, examining the unstable expansion of the initial slip is important. However, reproducing this process in laboratory experiments, such as triaxial loading tests on small cylindrical specimens with inclined faults, is challenging. To achieve this, we prepared a sub-meter-scale cubic specimen, which was separated into two triangular prisms by a model fault. The specimen was subjected to biaxial compression of different magnitudes. A 2D array of strain gauges was embedded beneath the fault plane to measure the changes in shear strain with fault slip driven by fluid injection. Based on the experimental results, we discussed the features of the injection-induced fault slips that lead to earthquakes. The strain increased locally around the edge of the fault slipping area by approximately 10 με, which is equivalent to a shear stress of ~ 0.1 MPa. The fault slipping area first expanded gradually and then unstably beyond the fluid invasion area approximately 3 s after the slip was initiated. The unstable expansion of initial slips was suppressed by reducing the initial shear stress on the fault by 0.3 MPa. In this case, the initial shear stress was possibly too small for additional stress to accumulate at the edge of the fault-slipping area to overcome the static frictional strength of the fault. Our experimental study explicitly confirms that injection-induced aseismic slip can outpace the fluid migration front, finally leading up to a runaway rupture. It also confirms that the level of initial shear stress is important in controlling the rupture size under fluid injection. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Understanding flow behavior in a geothermal reservoir is important for managing sustainable geothermal energy extraction. Fluid flow in geothermal reservoirs generally occurs in complex existing fracture systems in which the reservoirs are situated in highly fractured rocks. To simulate a discrete fracture model, the location and orientation of the fracture were computed using statistical processes and observational data. In many cases, estimating the location and orientation of fractures from 1D borehole logging data is challenging. In this study, we used microseismic data to build the fracture network systems and extract the detailed positions and dimensions of the fractures. We used the microseismic data recorded at the Okuaizu Geothermal Field, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, from 2019 to 2021. First, we located the hypocenters, removing the effect of uncertainty in the velocity structure of the geothermal fluids. We relocated and clustered the seismic events based on waveform similarity. We analyzed each cluster to define the fracture orientation using principal component analysis (PCA) and focal mechanism (FM) analysis. We used the P polarity with the S/P ratio as a constraint for a better fault-plane solution. With PCA, we can extract the fracture dimension of each cluster. Our cluster analysis showed that the clusters were not always planar fractures, and we interpreted them as fracture zones. Based on the consistency between PCA and FM, each cluster/fracture zone was classified into three conceptual models to characterize the fracture network system in this field. This model showed variations in the orientation of small fractures within the fracture zone. We characterized the spatial variation in fracture distribution and orientations in the reservoir and demonstrated the fracture network system of this field. The fracture zone near the injection well has a N–S strike, and the dip is above 80°; however, the fracture zone in the northeastern part of the injection well has a NW–SE strike with a dip between 60° and 80°. The fracture network system estimated in this study is crucial for robust reservoir modeling because our model is more realistic, observation-orientated, and includes local anomalies of reservoir properties. ABSTRACT The detection of microseismic events with low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) can expand the seismic catalog and provide opportunities for a deeper understanding of subsurface reservoir features. We propose a novel polarization analysis method for comprehensively detecting S-wave arrival and P–S travel time of low-SNR events from the particle motion of P and S waves in the time and frequency domain. In most circumstances, the direct S-wave particle motion shows a flat plane, and that is perpendicular to the direct P-wave motion direction. We combine these two properties to detect the S-wave arrival of low-SNR events. Our previous study applied spectral matrix (SPM) analysis to characterize the 3D particle motion of P waves. However, SPM analysis had limitations in detecting S-wave arrivals. We then introduce the time-delay components of the SPM (complex spectral matrix [cSPM]) to characterize the S-wave particle motion, separate the S-wave from the noise, and detect S-wave arrivals. Using the cSPM analysis method, we assess the planarity and perpendicularity of the S-wave polarization in the time and frequency domains. We then define a characteristic function that detects S-wave arrivals by combining two properties, planarity and perpendicularity, to detect more low-SNR events. The P–S travel time is obtained by setting the threshold values for the P- and S-wave characteristic functions. We apply our method to 4 hr and 2 months of field data recorded at the Groningen field in the Netherlands. Our method successfully detects the P–S travel time of all catalog events and several additional undetected events. We locate the hypocenter of all events using the detected P–S travel times with a grid-based search method.

Abstract Forecasting microseismic cloud shape as a proxy of stimulated rock volume may improve the design of an energy extraction system. The microseismic cloud created during hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoirs is known empirically to extend in the general direction of the maximum principal stress. However, this empirical relationship is often inconsistent with reported results, and the cloud growth process remains poorly understood. This study investigates microseismic cloud growth using data obtained from a hydraulic stimulation project in Basel, Switzerland, and explores its correlation with measured in‐situ stress. We applied principal component analysis to a time series of microseismicity for macroscopic characterization of microseismic cloud growth in two‐ and three‐dimensional space. The microseismic cloud, in addition to extending in the general direction of maximum principal stress, expanded in the direction of intermediate principal stress. The orientation of the least microseismic cloud growth was stable and almost identical to the minimum principal stress direction. Further, microseismic cloud shape ratios showed good agreement when compared with in‐situ stress magnitude ratios. The permeability tensor estimated from microseismicity also provided a good correlation in terms of direction and magnitude with the microseismic cloud growth. We show that in‐situ stress plays a dominant role by controlling the permeability of each existing fracture in the reservoir fracture system. Consequently, microseismic cloud growth can be scaled by in‐situ stress as a first‐order approximation if there is sufficient variation in the orientation of existing faults.

Abstract This study describes an ongoing intense earthquake swarm in the crust of the northeastern Noto Peninsula, Japan, that began around the end of 2019. Fluid movement related to volcanic activity is often involved in earthquake swarms in the crust. However, no volcanic activity has occurred in this region since the Middle Miocene (15.6 Ma). This study investigates the cause of this earthquake swarm based on the spatiotemporal evolution of earthquake hypocenters and seismic reflectors. The hypocenter relocation of 10,940 earthquakes (M > 1) reveals that they are all crustal and migrated upward, activating a complex network of faults at depths shallower than 20 km. The initiation of this earthquake swarm occurred at a locally deep depth (z = 17 km), and the local hypocenter distribution shows a characteristic circular pattern. We find a distinctive S‐wave reflector in the immediate vicinity. A low‐velocity anomaly exists below the reflector, and a high helium isotope ratio and a low‐gravity anomaly were observed at the surface. These observations suggest that the current seismicity is associated with fluids released by ancient or possibly unrecognized modern magmatic activity, although no volcanic activity has been documented in this area for 15 million years. Significant crustal deformation was observed during this swarm and is probably related to the fluid movement and aseismic deformation that contributed to this earthquake swarm. The strongest M5.4 earthquake (as of October 2022) occurred near the migration front on the largest planar structure, leaving the shallow extension unruptured.

The seismic events, which were considered to be slow events, were detected by analyzing continuous waveform data measured in the Groningen gas field. Despite the depth of the earthquake source is thought to be around 3km-5km, events with a time duration around 30 seconds were included. When the source depth is about 3 km, the shear slip of the crack is generally several ms and the time duration of detected waveforms is several seconds general. Therefore, the event detected in this analysis seemed that the shear slip was more slowly than the normal AE. On the other hand, since the velocity structure of the field is composed of relatively low-velocity layers, it was found that detailed examination is required in consideration of such as the Q value.

Microseismicity occurs from the shear slip on existing fractures at the sub-surface fluid resource developments such as geothermal development. Existing fractures play a very important role in resource development because they storage the resources and act as flow paths. However, estimating the orientation of existing fractures is difficult due to the limitation of seismological information acquisition from microseismicity. This study utilizes the geophysical information such as in-situ stress and existing fractures both from borehole logging and combined into the seismological analysis process. This attempt successfully constrains the range of the focal mechanism of microseismicity. In other words, the geophysical information from borehole logging compensates for the lack of seismology information in the seismological analysis.

We conducted hydraulic fracturing experiments in order to investigate the relationship between hydraulic fractures and induced microearthquakes. We monitored acoustic emissions during the experiments and compared the hypocenter distributions to fluid penetration regions that observed after the experiments. Fluid pressure history, fluid penetration region, acoustic emission activities, and their dominant mechanism significantly depended on the kind of rocks and dominant direction of preexisting fractures, revealing many important points that should be considered when estimating influence regions by microseismic activities.

We have developed a seismic evaluation method called the possible seismic moment (PoSeMo) model to assess the potential seismic moment that could be released in the future based on current seismic activity. The PoSeMo model assumes the existence of a representative parameter that can describe the seismic characteristics of a given field. This parameter is defined as the seismic moment density, which quantifies the seismic moment able to be released per rock volume. The rock volume presumed to be in critical condition because of stimulation is defined as the stimulated rock volume. The current stimulation condition for the PoSeMo model can be estimated from the product of these two parameters. The difference between the output of the PoSeMo model and the observed cumulative seismic moment corresponds to the cumulative seismic moment that could be released in the future. This value can be transformed into the possible maximum magnitude that has clear physical meaning.
