Abstract Hollandite‐type α‐MnO2 exhibits exceptional promise in current industrial applications and in advancing next‐generation green energy technologies, such as multivalent (Mg2+, Ca2+, and Zn2+) ion battery cathodes and aerobic oxidation catalysts. Considering the slow diffusion of multivalent cations within α‐MnO2 tunnels and the catalytic activity at edge surfaces, ultrasmall α‐MnO2 particles with a lower aspect ratio are expected to unlock the full potential. In this study, ultrasmall α‐MnO2 (<10 nm) with a low aspect ratio (c/a ≈ 2) is synthesized using a newly developed alcohol solution process. This material demonstrates exceptional performance across various multivalent battery systems, primarily due to the significantly reduced cation diffusion distance. Notably, an ultrasmall α‐MnO2‐graphene composite achieves high capacity with low overpotential when paired with an F‐free electrolyte in Ca battery. Regarding aerobic oxidation catalysis, the nanosizing of α‐MnO2 has a profound impact on aerobic oxidation catalysis. The increased efficiency of oxidative conversion reactions, such as the oxidation of 1‐phenylethanol, is attributed to the greatly expanded active surface area of the catalyst. The versatile functionality of ultrasmall α‐MnO2 underscores its potential to revolutionize energy storage and catalysis, offering broad applicability in next‐generation green energy technologies.

Abstract Zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising grid‐scale energy storage devices owing to their low cost, high energy/power densities, high safety, benign environmental impact, etc. Among various cathode materials, ZnMn2O4 spinel has attracted attention because of its high theoretical capacity (448 mAh g−1) associated with the two‐electron redox reaction of Mn ions (2+/4+), a higher voltage (≈1.4 V vs Zn/Zn2+) than V2O5‐based cathodes (≈1.0 V), and better cyclability among manganese oxide‐based cathodes. However, so far only the one‐electron reaction of Mn ions is used with ZnMn2O4 spinel (≈224 mAh g−1), impairing its attractive features. In this study, the two‐electron reaction is successfully enabled by synthesizing ultrasmall ZnMn2O4 spinel nanoparticles (≈5 nm) composited with graphene (US‐ZMO/G) via a rapid room‐temperature alcohol reduction process, achieving the reversible capacity of 445 mAh g−1 at the second cycle. As far as it is known, the US‐ZMO/G composite achieves the highest gravimetric energy/power densities among cathodes for ZIBs. The combination of high capacity and high voltage enables an outstanding energy density approaching that of lithium‐ion batteries.

    More details Close

Graphene nanosheet (GNS) gives rise to an extraordinary modification to the properties of Pt cluster electrocatalysts supported on it. The Pt/GNS electrocatalyst revealed an unusually high activity for methanol oxidation reaction compared to Pt/carbon black catalyst. The Pt/GNS electrocatalyst also revealed quite a different characteristic for CO oxidation among the measured catalyst samples. It is found that Pt particles below 0.5 nm in size are formed on GNS, which would acquire the specific electronic structures of Pt, modifying its catalytic activities.

    More details Close

A methodology was developed to synthesize crystalline mesoporous metal oxides by help of controlled crystallization process. The proposed methodology has three essential features: (1) Mesoscopically ordered hybrids consisting of multicomponent inorganic precursors and surfactant templates can be obtained by using self-assembly procedure; (2) Subsequent in-situ crystallization of the materials through heat treatment transforms the hybrid into nanocrystal–based oxides; (3) Glass phase is used to control the crystallization. In this way, the nanocomposite consisting of anatase nanocrystals and glass phase can be designed and synthesized. In addition, almost fully crystalline mesoporous oxides can be resulted by decreasing the content of glass phase.

Strict control of the crystallization of TiO_2 is one of the most important factors in forming mesoporous structured TiO_2 thin films. Effects of the crystallization of TiO_2 on the formation of mesoporous structures have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) observation and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis. The obtained well-ordered mesoporous TiO_2 thin films, calcined at 450℃ to remove the template, are composed of a continuous non-crystalline TiO_2 matrix containing TiO_2 nanocrystals, whose mean size is sufficiently small to support the mesostructure. In the mean time, the mesoporous TiO_2 materials that almost lose their ordered structure after calcination consist of large TiO_2 crystallites (over 6 nm), and the overgrowth of TiO_2 crystallites cause a collapse of the mesoporous structure.

Protonic conductor has been studied for a large number of inorganic and polymer materials because of the technological potential for fuel cells, hydrogen separation and other electrochemical devices (1-3). In this paper, new class of organic/inorganic hybrid membranes have been synthesized through sol-gel processes. The membrane doped with acidic moieties such as tungstic isopolyacids, acidic tungsten oxide clusters and 12-phosphotungstic acid (PWA) shows good protonic conductivities at high temperatures up to 160°C and was found to be a flexible as well as thermally stable due to the temperature tolerant inorganic frameworks in the hybrids. The effect of molecular structure of polymer phase as well as inorganic structures on to the protonic conductivity have been studied.

In this research project, we have developed a novel co-production processes of mono-layer graphene and hydrogen via hydrothermal cathodic reduction under a subcritical water. In the developed process, the hydrothermal subcritical water solution was used to enhance the electrochemical reaction kinetics due to an increased electrolytic dissociation rate of the water and prevent the formation of undesirable amorphous carbon. The hydrothermal electrochemical reaction enabled low-temperature graphene growth on a Pt cathode surface with simultaneous hydrogen production. The conversion of hydrocarbons/basic chemicals to the high-value-added nanocarbons, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes, with valuable hydrogen has high potential economic/environmental benefits.

(Nano Letters, 16, 5829-5835 (2016))

Organic materials has attracted much attention as the electrodes in low-cost, environmentally-friendly and high-energy-density batteries. In this study, we analyzed the crystal structural change in organic electrode, and revealed that the crystal growth of organic compound during charge-discharge cycling can become a dominant mechanism of battery degradation. To avoid the organic crystal growth, the control of interface between electrode and electrolyte was effective. Moreover, by applying the organic active materials to electrochemical flow capacitor, the capacitance enhancement was achieved.

(Chemistry - A European Journal, 20, 16210- 16215(2014); Journal of Materials Chemistry A, 2, 17400-17407(2014); RSC Advances, 4, 27452-27470 (2014); Scientific Reports, 4, 3975 (2014))平成26年度の研究開発では超臨界流体プロセスを用いて高電位オリビン化合物Li2CoPO4のナノ結晶活物質の合成に成功し、電極特性を評価した。 (Chemistry of Materials, 26, 2770 - 2773(2014))(ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 5, 9926–9932(2013))。

Zigzag-edge nanographene can be a promising magnetic material, which contributes to the magnetic separation and collection of minor metals. In this study, we developed a novel scalable production method of zigzag-edge-introduced nanographene by combination between anisotropic etching and supercritical fluid exfoliation. We conducted anisotropic etching of graphite substrate/powder with catalytic nanoparticles in supercritical water. Anisotropic etching made a lot of trenches consisted of zigzag edges on graphite surface. Because of the exfoliation effect of supercritical fluid, graphene was isolated from the graphite simultaneously with the anisotropic etching. Finally, the multilayer graphene with zigzag edge was exfoliated from the anisotropically etched graphite surface.
