    For preventing accidents resulted from human errors in large-scale complex systems, operator personnel is required to learn not only Technical Skills (TS) but also Non-Technical Skills (NTS). However, it may be difficult for many industrial domains to develop and introduce comprehensive NTS training like Crew Resource Management (CRM) training in the aviation domain due to resource limitation. Therefore, simplified and generalized training methods of NTS are necessary for the purpose of bringing the safety benefits of NTS to wider industrial domains. For the first step to realize such NTS training, this study developed an experiment environment for examining the effectiveness of NTS skills derived from a specific industrial domain in generalized task context, focusing on communication skills which are regarded as fundamental skills of NTS. The experiment environment was evaluated through the effectiveness assessment of communication skills derived from the aviation domain. The experimental environment can contribute to the development of effective generalized NTS training program by supporting the identification of fundamental common communication skills.

    Fieldwork simulator for experiencing human error has been developed as one of the key component in CRM training course for JNFL (Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited) reprocessing plant. The characteristic feature of the developed simulator is that it is consist of downscaled hardware (Field Control Station: FCS and Control Center: C/C) similar to ones actually used in real plant combined with Operator Interface Station(OIS) and the focus of training has been set on the communication among trainees in team for achieving specified task. The error-prone situation has been intentionally prepared by adding erroneous description in the given procedure. The developed simulator has been used during the CRM training course in JNFL and the validity of the simulator has been examined. Based on the behavioral analysis results of one training session, in which four teams of personnel participated, it has been confirmed that the expected error has been observed in half of the teams depending on the characteristics of each team performance. In addition, the subjective evaluation of the developed simulator showed that it was preferably accepted by trainees for enhancing self-recognition of error-prone situations.

    This paper presents a part of the research result on comparative study on design solutions for the interface of an industrial process control systems. The emphasis has been set on the cultural diversity aspects and three universities from Germany, Japan and USA were participated on this research project. The proposed design of the information display for the distillation process as the representative of Japanese is mainly discussed in this paper. Comparisons with another proposed design revealed some differences in design rationales and its prototypes.

    A systematic survey of reports on abnormal events experienced in Japanese nuclear power plants has been carried out to identify mechanisms that are responsible to anomalies and failures. The idenfitied mechanisms are then decomposed step-by-step to most basic elementary events called primitives. The decomposition procedure has been supported by our unique model of describing onset and development of a failure event as a consequence of interactions among primitives. The potential advantage of the proposed method has been demonstrated though in-depth analysis of a set of anomaly events experienced in several nuclear plants.

    The operational safety in nuclear power plants depends strongly on man machine interfaces (MMI), such as assignment of equipment on control boards and operation procedures in emergency situations. Therefore, the evaluation and analysis methods for the MMI are important. In order for the methods to be practical, the methods should be executed in each step of design and be easy for designers to use.<br>We aim to develop SEAMAID system: a computer supported system for evaluating and analyzing the MMI by simulating the interaction between the operator and the machine. In this paper, we discuss problems of the conventional methods and the required functions of the operator simulator for the SEAMAID. The operator simulator executes not human errors but correct behavior which follows the operational procedure. The SEAMAID evaluates the MMI by finding potential human errors which could occur in the simulated interactions and points out the problematic interaction parts which could induce human errors.<br>We construct the operator simulator by combining the human model which was proposed by Prof. Reason, and the knowledge base model based on the Petri net model. This simulator can treat frequency parameter which represents the degree of frequency of using a certain knowledge.<br>We conduct two sample simulations in different frequency parameters in the same scenario. These simulation results show that even if the operator behaves correctly following the procedure, there are alternative task sequences. We verify that the simulated interactions are in good agreement with the actual one. Also, we propose the method to point out the problematic parts in the interactions based on the working memory consumption.

    It is important for aviation safety to share situation awareness and intention between an Air Traffic Controller (ATCo) and a pilot. Therefore, the current communication procedure in Air Traffic Control (ATC) should be carefully analyzed from the view point of human factors in order to actualize more reliable and effective communication. In the present research, a cognitive experiment designed based on ATC tasks has been conducted to analyze effect of communication procedures on task performance as a team. In the experiment, subjects were required to perform simulated ATC tasks with utilizing two different types of communication procedures. The result of the experiment has indicated requirements of reliable communication procedure in the time-pressure and multi-task condition such as air traffic control.

    This paper describes the two experimental studies on the cognitive issues concerning air traffic control(ATC). In the first experiment, the effectiveness of the communication style adopted in ATC has been confirmed through the communication experiments.     For achieving higher level safety in aviation, it is strongly required to reduce accidents involving human factors. Appropriate Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Design is a key issue for preventing significant hazards resulted from human errors. In the present study, as an evaluation method for HMI, a human-machine system simulation called Pilot Cognitive Simulator (PCS) has been developed. The main purpose of the simulation is detecting potential problems in HMI design, concerning information contents on HMI, by analyzing cognitive interaction processes between pilots and HMI in simulated line operations. The effectiveness of PCS has been shown in an experimental evaluation of a prototype flight deck display which has been conducted with iterative validation by an expert pilot.

It is considered that professional operators like pilots usually control the system based on prediction utilizing mental models. However, it also means that some human errors can be caused by the deviation between the mental model and the state of real system. In this paper, the method for supporting situation awareness (SA) to reduce human errors by supporting the detection of this deviation has been proposed. A prototype information display for supporting the SA concerning the auto pilot system has been developed and evaluated on a PC-based flight simulator in order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. Based on the resulting experimental knowledge, the support method has been improved in terms of the range of SA, covering other critical function such as TCAS.

    Although the automation system of the aircrafts can reduce human operators' workload, it may introduce new types of human error like "mode-confusion". In this paper, the conventional cockpit interface has been modified based on the concept of supporting situation awareness regarding the mode of automation in modern aircraft. In addition, the subject of research has been extended to the flight operation system which includes air traffic control. The direction on how to prevent human error that occurs in the co-operative work of pilots and controllers under severe time constraint has been discussed through an incident analysis.

    Experimental study has been performed to investigate the effect of individual preferences on the interface for remote operation. A Tele-operation system, in which a user can control the manipulator either by a joystick or a mouse through a computer, has been taken as an example system. As for the visual task environment three cameras (one fixed and two controllable) have been used to give subjects necessary information for task execution. Subjects were asked to perform two kinds of tasks, marking and peg-in-hole. The results of the experiments show that the individual differences of each user's inherent characteristics can be estimated by comparing the results of the tasks with different conditions. The results also imply that the interfaces with enhanced degree of freedom in the choice of operation device and camera usage can lead to the better performance.

    We have developed a head mounted display (HMD) equipped with infrared LEDs and a CCD camera for each eye. The purpose of the HMD is to analyze visual functions, for instance, eye movement, eyeblinks or pupil diameter while watching some visual images and to be a new device for humancomputer interaction employing such visual functions. In this report, First, the specification of the HMD and the real-time process for eye's image signal derived from the CCD camera are introduced. Then, application of the HMD is described.

    The integrated design support system on the virtual reality environment (VRE) is proposed in terms of the computer supported cooperative work(CSCW) for the design procedure of the huge, complex system. The developped system (called VINDS : Virtual environment for Integrated Design Support) provides the designer with the features that are important for the better understanding of the objective system and for the cooperative work with other designers. Object representation in VRE, knowledge representation of the objective system and the support for the numerical calculation are three major topics in the present study.

    A new safety perspective of safety called “Safety-II” aims at the enhancement of the safety of large-scale complex systems by improving the resilience of operator personnel, organizations, and systems. Taking Air Traffic Control (ATC) as an example of a complex system, the present study has proposed extraction and modeling methods of controller’s abilities and readiness contributing to successful daily operations of ATC. By using the proposed methods, a functional model of ATC based on Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) has been developed. The characteristics of the model is that it depicts ATC tasks from the viewpoint of why things go right. The proposed extraction and modeling methods could be bases for analyzing system resilience.

    In the present study, the functional framework to realize situation-adaptive system to enhance human performance has been proposed in order to increase the level of safety for nuclear power plant. The human behavior facing severe situation has been analyzed using smart grid simulation environment and the characteristic behavior of human has been clarified. Next, the human state estimation method using wearable device has been developed and it has been confirmed that the degradation of human performance can be detected based on the objective measurements. Finally, the differences of the human performance to deal with unexpected situations has been evaluated according to the directions given to subjects. The subjects who have been give strong direction to follow the prescribed procedures showed degraded performance when they faced the situations outside of the prescribed procedures.

    An influence estimation technique based on an MFM model is developed and a prototype software system is developed to generate plausible counter operation procedures in an emergency plant situation by applying the technique. The applicability of the system is evaluated by the applications to nuclear power plants. Through several kinds of operation experiments to start up a model plant, the effectiveness of pointing out operation errors is confirmed and some guidelines to create operation manuals that can improve decision ability of operators. Good cases that operators dealt with threats well are analyzed from the viewpoints of four basic abilities requested by resilience engineering and the concept of Safety-II, an education and training method such that the purpose, goal, ground, etc. of operations described in operation manuals are asked in a drilling down way.

    In this study, cognitive,psychological and brain studies have performed to find the method to improve the capability to deal with unexpected situations in nuclear power plant. Two simulation environments (Micro world simulation and PC-based Nuclear power plant simulator ) have been utilized to evaluate the human performance when facing unexpected situations. It has been confirmed through cognitive experiments using Micro world simulation that the task performance facing severe situation is positively correlated with the one for normal situations. It has also been confirmed that human performance for unexpected situation tends to improve when the subjects were given with the deep knowledge.Based on the above findings, it is concluded that the important insights have been obtained for the evaluation of human behavior when facing unexpected events and for the improvements of operation training.

    In order to study human factors of an air traffic control system, an experimental approach was adopted for task analysis of air traffic controllers. Having analyzed experimental data, common patterns were observed in the strategy of the controllers, the common patterns have been characterized as a notion of "routine". A routine is a package of expert knowledge necessary for air traffic controllers to make decisions, which are used to predict situations by pattern matching. Every classes of routines used in the target sector of experiment were extracted and the validity of the idea was confirmed. From the above findings, a cognitive model of a radar controller in en-route air traffic control has been proposed. This model includes perception, comprehension, and prediction stage of controller's cognitive process, and it describes the cognitive process of a radar controller who determined air traffic instructions depending on the situation. In addition, a prototype of ATC controller cognitive simulation system was developed that simulates the cognitive process of a radar controller to demonstrate that the proposed cognitive model is an operable one. In order to achieve a higher level of safety in aviation, it is important also to improve ATC-pilot coordination. A method for improving cockpit interface for supporting pilot's situation awareness has been proposed. The supporting method is based on pilot's mental model derived through the analysis of pilot's standard operations in practice. Based on the proposed method, a prototype of an improved display has been developed on a PC-based flight simulator. In addition, as an evaluation method for the proposed display, a human-machine system simulation called Pilot Cognitive Simulator (PCS) has been developed. The main purpose of the simulation is detecting problems in display design, especially from the aspect of information contents on HMI, by analyzing interaction processes between pilots' cognition and human-machine interface in simulated line operations. The effectiveness of PCS has been shown in an experimental evaluation of a prototype flight deck display which has been conducted with sequential validation of an expert pilot. In conclusion, basic findings on human factors of air traffic control were obtained and some technological proposals were made for improving air traffic safety and supporting experts.

    本年度は以下の二つの内容について検討を行った。 1.プロトタイプインタフェースを用いたカスタマイズの形態に関する検討 2.協調作業におけるインタフェース適合化のあり方に関する検討 1.に関しては、前年度の段階で構築した実験用の加速器に対するプロトタイプインタフェースを中心に検討を進めた。構築したプロトタイプインタフェースを実際の加速器のオペレーションにおいて利用してもらい、利用者からのフィードバックを設計の改善に反映させるという進化的な設計の適応過程を繰り返した。この過程を通じて、利用者個人の嗜好の多様性を反映させるユーザ参加型の適応型の設計過程を実践した。この結果から、ユーザの要求は、嗜好による部分とタスク側からの要求による部分があることが明らかになり、特にタスクの内容に基づくユーザ要求が有用であることが明らかになった。更に、このようなユーザ毎の要求を抽出することは、概念的な設計段階では困難であり、実際のプロトタイプシステムを用いて実践の場で用いてはじめて明確にすることができるということを確認することができた。複数のユーザの適応の結果として得られたインタフェースの形態は、比較的情報量の少ないミミック画面と、ポップアップ画面の組み合わせとなっており、ユーザは自分の要求に基づき必要と感じる情報だけを表示できる形態となっている。 2.に関しては、研究の重点を置いた加速器のインタフェースが、主に一人の運転員によって利用されるために、十分な検討を行うことは出来なかった。しかしながら、航空機のコックピットにおける機長と副操縦士の協調的なタスク実行の在り方の検討を行い、インタフェースの適合の可能性についての知見を得ており、今後の研究として発展させていく予定である。

    The present research project was launched in 1997 aiming at improving the reliability and safety of large-scale artifacts such as a nuclear power plant, space shuttle, aircraft, etc. The main idea behind the project is the belief that the improvement of preventive maintenance, with particular emphasis on the condition-based maintenance with a broad perspective covering the whole plant lifetime, is the central issue to meet the need. Furthermore, base on the fundamental recognition that the essential nature of the required database technique for condition-based decision-making is the intelligent interface, efforts were centered in development of the three key-techniques described below : (a) Lifecycle database with evolutionary adaptability for condition-based maintenance support, (b) Mobile-agent implementation of monitoring and diagnosis tools, (c) Goal-oriented sensing for intelligent information acquisition. In the subproject-(a), an efficient data search scheme was introduced by utilizing a specifically introduced similarity indices called partial and heirarchically-defined similarity index. The search scheme was found to be used as a technical basis decision-support system for maintenance problem solving. The high modifiability of the database was also confirmed to be useful for evolutionary development of the database. In the subproject-(b), the monitoring and diagnosis tools were developed and implemented by the mobile-agent technique, which allowed dynamic task allocation and evolution to accommodate computational load focusing and technology innovation. The essence of technical development in the subproject-(c) is the goal-oriented sensing, which implied cooperative use of conventional and mobile sensing systems. The locations of the mobile sensor were determined based of the measurement by the conventional sensing system and the causal reasoning based on the model called Bayesian net. The high potentiality of the proposed techniques as essential constituents of the condition-based maintenance support system for ensuring life cycle integrity was clearly demonstrated through the study.

    本研究では、遺伝アルゴリズムによる自律分散型診断システムの基本的なコンセプトを実証するための環境の整備を目的として研究を行った。当初の予定では、Remote Procedure C allと呼ばれるUNIXにおける標準的な通信手段を用いて複数の計算機の間の協調的動作を実現させる予定であった。しかしながら、近年のネットワークの急速な拡大に伴い、診断エージェントを実装する際に用いるべき言語として望ましい特徴を有する新しい言語“JAVA"が利用可能な状況になってきた。このような技術動向の変化を反映させて、今年度は“JAVA"の実行環境を整備し、自律分散型診断システムへの適用可能性についての検討を行うこととした。 JAVAはSun Micro Systems社によって開発されたオブジェクト指向言語であり、次のような特徴を持っている。 1.完全なオブジェクト指向言語であり対象の効率的なモデル化が可能 2.マシンアーキテクチャに依存しないプログラム開発が可能 3.安定性が高い 4.マルチスレッドに対応 この中で、特に2,3,4の特徴が、ネットワーク上の診断エージェントの実装には有利な特徴であろうと思われる。 補助金により購入したワークステーション(JS/5 Sun Sparc互換機)上に、Java Development Kitを実際に実装し、その動作の確認を行った。Sun Sparc互換機上で開発したJAVAプログラムモジュール(Appletと呼ばれる)は他のマシン(HP-Apolo,Windows95等)でも実行可能であることを確認した。 以上述べたように、JAVAはネットワーク上の診断エージェント実装のための言語としては高い可能性を有していることが確認できた。

    共同研究期間である東京大学、電子航法研究所による管制官認知モデルおよび管制業務パフォーマンス評価指標をベースに、管制官の認知プロセスをコンピュータ上にモデル化した管制官認知シミュレータを構築し、管制業務パフォーマンスの可視化機能を実装した。さらに、複数の航空交通状況における異なる管制処理戦術のパフォーマンスを、管制官認知シミュレータを用いて可視化する検証実験を実施し、管制官インストラクタによる評価と一致する結果を得ることができた。以上のことから、管制官認知シミュレータの管制官研修生の教育・訓練支援ツールとしての適用可能性・有用性が示されると共に、その実用に向けた重要な技術的基盤を構築できたものと考える。

    健常者の標準脳データベースと、東北大学の脳疾患患者の脳機能画像データ(MRI/SPECT)を有機的に統合することにより、痴呆症になる確率や進行状況を数値化し、痴呆症の予防や治療への応用が可能となるシステムの開発を目標として研究を遂行してきた。 標準脳データベースコンテンツの解析から日本人の標準脳を選定した。またデータベース本体の基本設計を行った。 脳機能画像データベースから、脳血流SPECT画像の自動診断システム(プロトタイプ)を作成し、その評価を終了した。
