<title>Abstract</title>Hitachiite, Pb5Bi2Te2S6, is a new mineral discovered in the Hitachi mine, located in the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan. The mean of 21 electron microprobe analyses gave: Pb 52.01, Bi 23.06, Fe 0.69, Sb 0.17, Te 13.74, S 9.71, Se 0.54, total 100.04 wt.%. The empirical chemical formula based on 15 apfu is (Pb4.75Fe0.23)Σ4.98(Bi2.09Sb0.03)Σ2.12Te2.04(S5.73Se0.13)Σ5.86, ideally Pb5Bi2Te2S6. Synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments indicated that hitachiite has trigonal symmetry, space group P<inline-formula><alternatives><inline-graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" mime-subtype="gif" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="S0026461X19000458_inline1" /><tex-math>${\bar 3}$</tex-math></alternatives></inline-formula>m1, with a = 4.2200(13) Å, c = 27.02(4) Å and Z = 1. The four strongest diffraction peaks shown in the powder X-ray pattern [d, Å (I)(hkl)] are: 3.541(35)(012), 3.391(59)(013), 3.039(100)(015) and 2.114(56)(110). The calculated density (Dcalc) for the empirical chemical formula is 7.54 g/cm3. The crystal structure of hitachiite has been refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, to R = 7.38% and is based on ABC-type stacking of 15 layers (five Pb, two Bi, two Te, and six S layers) along the [001] direction, and with each layer ideally containing only one kind of atom. The stacking sequence is described as Te–Bi–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Bi–Te. The discovery of hitachiite implies that the minerals of the Bi2Te2S–PbS join might form a homologous series of Bi2Te2S·nPbS.

Gold (or electrum) in hydrothermal fluid precipitates directly from gold sulfide complex and/or partly via suspended nanoparticles. The hydrothermal fluid contains “invisible gold” that is atomically dispersed in sulfide minerals or as nanoparticles with a size of less than 10 nm. However, the contribution of these gold nanoparticles to the formation of native gold and its alloy with silver (electrum) remains unclear. The Higashi–Aogashima Knoll Caldera hydrothermal field, south of Tokyo, Japan, is an area of significant seafloor hydrothermal activity that is known for high-grade gold-containing minerals in sulfide-rich rocks. In this study, dry-polished thin sections were created to minimize sample damage and scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigated the cross-sectional and three-dimensional morphologies of native gold grains in a sulfide-rich mound rock from the Central Cone site of the caldera. The surfaces of the gold grains comprised nanoparticles with sizes of 5–50 nm that were also attached to their periphery, which suggests that gold nanoparticles in deep-sea hydrothermal fluid were involved in the mineralization of the gold. In addition, the distribution of silver was uneven within the gold grains, which suggests that the gold precipitation comprised multiple stages at different temperatures that resulted in the post-deposition or secondary remobilization of silver.

<title>Abstract</title>Seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits, modern analogues of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits on land, represent future resources of base and precious metals. Studies of VMS deposits have proposed two emplacement mechanisms for SMS deposits: exhalative deposition on the seafloor and mineral and void space replacement beneath the seafloor. The details of the latter mechanism are poorly characterised in detail, despite its potentially significant role in global metal cycling throughout Earth’s history, because in-situ studies require costly drilling campaigns to sample SMS deposits. Here, we interpret petrographic, geochemical and geophysical data from drill holes in a modern SMS deposit and demonstrate that it formed via subseafloor replacement of pumice. Samples from the sulphide body and overlying sediment at the Hakurei Site, Izena Hole, middle Okinawa Trough indicate that sulphides initially formed as aggregates of framboidal pyrite and matured into colloform and euhedral pyrite, which were replaced by chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The initial framboidal pyrite is closely associated with altered material derived from pumice, and alternating layers of pumiceous and hemipelagic sediments functioned as a factory of sulphide mineralisation. We infer that anhydrite-rich layers within the hemipelagic sediment forced hydrothermal fluids to flow laterally, controlling precipitation of a sulphide body extending hundreds of meters.

<title>Abstract</title> Seafloor hydrothermal deposits form when hydrothermal fluid mixes with ambient seawater, and constituent sulfide minerals are usually interpreted to precipitate abiogenically. Recent research drilling at Izena Hole and Iheya North Knoll in the middle Okinawa Trough (East China Sea), combined with secondary ion mass spectrometry determinations of δ34S in pyrite grains, provides compelling evidence that the initial stage of subseafloor sulfide mineralization is closely associated with microbial sulfate reduction. During the sulfide maturation process, pyrite textures progress from framboidal to colloform to euhedral. Pyrite δ34S has highly negative values (as low as –38.9‰) in framboidal pyrite, which systematically increase toward positive values in colloform and euhedral pyrite. Sulfur isotope fractionation between seawater sulfate (+21.2‰) and framboidal pyrite (–38.9‰) is as great as –60‰, which can be attained only by microbial sulfate reduction in an open system. Because framboidal pyrite is commonly replaced by chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, framboidal pyrite appears to function as the starting material (nucleus) of other sulfide minerals. We conclude that framboidal pyrite, containing microbially reduced sulfur, plays an important role at the initial stage of subseafloor sulfide mineralization.

Metastable phases of silica minerals, which are opal, cristobalite, moganite, melanophlogite, chibaite, etc, precipitate under low-temperature hydrothermal solutions. The metastable silica minerals change to the stable phase quartz. After the phase transition, the crystal shapes remain intact, and pseudomorphs after the metastable minerals are observed. We carried out crystallographical analyses for the textures of the pseudomorphs after the metastable minerals by using scanning and transmission electron microscopes and EBSD method.

We have recognized cumengeite, diaboleite, phosgenite and laurionite as the first occurrence in Japan, at the southern coast in the Kii Peninsula, Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture. Among them cumengeite and diaboleite were examined by Gandolfi camera and electron probe microanalyzer (EDS). EDS analyses show a good agreement with that of the ideal formula for diaboleite, and distinct content of Zn replacing Cu for cumengeite.

Spinel structure has two important sites; tetrahedral T-site and octahedral M-site. In the spinel series minerals, there is a relationship between the equilibration temperature and T-O and M-O lengths. The purpose of this study is tried to estimate the equilibration temperature of a natural spinel from Madagascar using T-O and M-O lengths. The chemical formula of this sample was determined as Mg0.94Fe0.04Al2.00O4 by EPMA analysis. Main crystallographic information were obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement as follows: the lattice constant (a) was 8.0915(6) Å, the oxygen fractional coordinates (u) was 0.26363(4). And the equilibration temperatures calculated from T-O and M-O lengths, which were corrected for the effect of iron, were 561 K and 585 K, respectively.

Growth textures and twin boundary structures of quartz twinned after Japan Law were studied by observations of etch figures and cathode luminescence, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Near the composition plane of Japanese twin, hourglass-shaped sectors are observed to have mosaic textures composed of polysynthetic Brazil twin. This sector corresponds to a growth sector of {10-11} or {01-11}, where the composition plane is smooth and flat {11-22}.From the MD simulations, it is shown that {11-22} is the only composition plane that does not incorporate dislocations, and that dislocations are not required at a junction of Japanese and Brazil twin boundaries. These facts indicate that {11-22} composition plane of Japanese twin serve as a source of Brazil twin during the course of growth.

Metastable phase, which has a lager value of Gibbs free energy than that of the stable phase, commonly occurs in nature against the thermodynamic regulation. Microtexture and microstructure of some metastable-phase minerals (opal-CT, marcasite and wurtzite) are studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Disordered stacking structures are commonly observed in the metastable phases. In the case of the opal-CT (Hosaka and Akase opal mines, Japan) and marcasite (Ikezuki, Japan), highly ordered domains appear around the domains with disordered stacking structure. Chocaya-Animas wurtzite crystals overgrow on the domains of disordered stackings of sphalerite and wurtzite, which were formed from ordered sphalerite.

This study summarizes the principal factors on nucleation, growth and polymorphic transformation termed "solution-mediated phase transformation" of some thermodynamically metastable phases in nature. The formation of the metastable phases occurring occasionally in hydrothermal deposits and sedimentary rocks is explained by the empirical Ostwald step rule, where the surface free energy and degrees of supersaturation are important factors. Transformation from a metastable phase to a stable polymorph in a solution can be kinetically analyzed by the relative rates of dissolution and growth of the two phases.<br>     The solubility of opal-CT as an example of metastable phase is usually higher than that of quartz as the stable phase, but this relation reverses in the case of nm-size grains according to the mesoscopic effect. In the latter case both solubilities of opal-CT and quartz become distnctly higher, and so the polymorphic relation among the silica minerals in nature is inferred to be in accordance with the Ostwald step rule. In contrast to solid-state transformation, metastably crystallized wurtzite appears to transform readily into stable sphalerite under hydrothermal conditions. This suggests that the solution-mediated transformation can be rapidly attained as compared with the solid-state transformation, showing that the dissolution-precipitation mechanism is predominant in the low-temperature polymorphic transformations.

Quartz has two different types of crystal structures, either in P3121 or P3221 space group, which are enantiomorphic to each other. Since conventional X-ray structure analysis can't distinguish these two structures, we applied X-ray anomalous scattering method in our chirality detemination analysis. Levoratory and dextrorotary quartz crystals were proved as in P3121 and P3221 space group, respectively. In addition, we discuss chirality discriomination of Cyrilovite which has 4 fold screw axis.

Chibaite is a new silica clathrate mineral that was first discovered in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. We recently discovered the world's second occurrence of chibaite in north Fossa Magna area, central Japan. Chibaite was found in quartz and calcite vains in hyaloclastite of Late Miocene or Pliocene. The host rock is clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene-andesite containing xenolithic carbonaceous sandstone. The crystal structure of chibaite could be refined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data in a space group Fd-3m, and no evidence of symmetry lowering was detected. Hydrocarbon gas molecules such as methane, ethane were detected by Raman spectroscopy.

We scanned olivine grains in a Martian meteorite to clarify the dissociation mechanism of olivine at high-pressure and -temperature condition induced by a dynamic event on the Mars. TEM observations reveal that micro-texture of olivine dissociation evolves from lamellar to equigranular with increasing temperature at same pressure condition, agreeing with the observations of synthetic samples recovered from high-pressure and -temperature experiments.

Seifertite and stishovite in a shocked lunar meteorite were investigated by a FIB-TEM technique. Major original silica phase in the lunar meteorite is cristobalite with a twin texture. A cristobalite grain with a tweed texture contains rhomboid or spindle-shaped seifertite crystals. Many stishovite platelets are formed in a cristobalite with a lamellar texture. There is a specific crystallographic relationship between cristobalite and stishovite. Seifertite and stishovite would be formed by incoherently and coherent mechanism, respectively. Considering thermal gradient in the silica grains, a clapeyron slope between stishovite and seifertite is negative.

The surface microtopography of rough basal faces and internal inhomogeneities of amethyst crystals from Four Peaks, Arizona were investigated by means of optical, scanning electron microscopes and cathodoluminescence tomography. Rough interface overgrowth was shown to have taken place along the c-axis on mechanically broken surfaces and the present rough basal surfaces were demonstrated to have formed because of later heavy dissolution.

Baitoushan volcano (Changbaishan volcano in China), situated on the border between China and North Korea, is one of the most active volcanoes in mainland Asia. The volcanism is divided into three stages, firstly the shield volcano-forming stage effusing large amount of basaltic lava flow, secondly volcanic cone-building stage consisting of trachytic magma, and finally summit caldera (called Tianchi caldera)-forming stage erupting the vigorous alkali-rhyolitic pyroclastics. Tianchi caldera has been formed by some huge eruptions (10th century, 4000yBP eruption and more) since Pleistocene. In ...

Chocaya-Animas...

Mineralogical analysis methods were applied for textures of stone property. Identification of the rock used in cultural properties and decipherment of the rock texture were carried out in this study. Research subjects are cultural property materials composed of andesite and siliceous rocks. Mineral and rock texture were observed by Raman spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence method, and optical microscopy, and chemical analyses carried out by an electron microprobe analyzer. Electron back-scattered diffraction analysis also used to identify the crystallographic direction of minerals. We tried to identify the mineralogical features of the stone and to identify the place of origin of the stone using these texture analysis

This study challenged the formation of oligonucleotides on mineral templates. Gypsum and calcite were used as the template mineral since they are ion crystal that potentially presented on the early Earth. Four kinds of adenosine nucleotides were investigated as the monomer of the oligomerization experiments. As the results, oligonucleotides were formed on gypsum template and glass template. However, the reproducibility of the results and the effects of template remain unclear. Thus, additional experiments are conducted. Further, a borophosohate mineral, luneburgite, was investigated as the source of phosphorus in phosphorylation of nucleoside and found that this mineral serves phosphate effectively and promote the formation of nucleotide in a potential prebiotic environment. This work was published in Angwandte Chemie International Edition as a very important paper.

We researched about precipitation processes of low-crystallinity minerals, which have crystal structure with numerous defects, from low temperature solution on the basis of observations for their textures and occurrence. The low-crystallinity mineral, which precipitates under metastable condition or out of stable region, are major in mineral species on the earth, and contribute to the diversity of minerals. It is considered that origins of the metastable phase were effects of impurity and interface energy. We will propose a new model for nucleation process of low-crystallinity minerals.

In order to reveal the mechanism of the 2011 Tohoku Oki earthquake and subsequent post-seismic deformation of the northeastern Japan, we have conducted deformation experiments of a wide variety of rocks composing subduction zones. By the friction experiments using gas rig, frictional stability of quartz gouge is observed to be correlated to energy ratio of the gouge controlled by internal structure of gouges. Moreover, rupture velocity of serpentinites and olivine gouges depends on the their frictional coefficients and normal stress, implying that the slow slip in subduction zones illuminates the stress state of the plate boundary. By the shear experiments using Griggs rig, deformation mechanisms and creep strengths of feldspars are significantly reduced by the presence of water added externally into the samples under the lower crustal condition. We also proposed rheological models of the NE Japan island arc-trench systems and plate boundary causing the 2011 Tohoku Oki earthquake.

The purposes of the present study are to constrain biological primary producers in 3.8, 3.2, and 3.0 Ga oceans. To approach the purpose, we performed geological surveys in Isua (Greenland), Barberton (S. Africa), and Steep Rock and Lumby Lake (Canada). Besides the detailed geological data, mineralogical and geochemical data suggest that cyanobacteria were the primary producers at least since 3.0 Ga. In addition, chemoautotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, whose activities were supported by cyanobacteria indirectly, were also active in deep sedimentary basin. We also discovered new evidence for trace of the earliest life in rocks from Isua. This discovery was broadcasted widely through various media. Other results were reported at the major international conferences. Some papers are in reviews at major international journals.

We have developed techniques on high-pressure generations using sintered diamond multi-anvil systems combined with synchrotron radiation, which enables to obtain time-resolved X-ray diffraction data every 10-30 seconds up to 35 GPa and 2000K. We also tested new sintered diamond anvils manufactured by Ringwood Superabrasives for the X-ray window of multi-anvil apparatus. Based on these techniques, we have quantitatively studied on kinetics of post garnet transformations in natural garnet, high-pressure transformations in pyroxenes (enstatite and diopside), and effects of water on the olivine-spinel transformation kinetics. Transformation microstructures and water contents of samples recovered were examined using TEM and FTIR. In addition to these studies, we have also examined about formation of metastable cubic perovskite, dehydration reaction of high-pressure hydrous minerals, and mechanisms and kinetics of high-pressure transformations in shocked meteorites, those have important implications for subduction processes. Cation diffusion kinetics in wadsleyite have been experimentally examined and rheology of subducting plates and mantle transition zone was discussed. We have extrapolated quantitative kinetic data obtained to subduction zone conditions and construct metastable mineralogy in subducting plates. We have calculated the density of subducting slabs taking transformation kinetics into accounts, which suggests that the subducting slabs are buoyant at the top of the lower mantle due to the presence of metastable low-pressure phases. Grain-size reductions caused by non-equilibrium transformations can reduce strength of subducting plates. These are important for the formation of stagnant slabs at the top of the lower mantle.

The modified Merrill-Bassett type diamond anvil pressure cell was used. The 4:1 fluid mixture of methanol and ethanol was used for pressure medium. The compressibility of the unit cell is close to the compressibility of the MO_6 octahedron. The mean Si-O distance stay almost constant up to 7.9 GPa. The compression of the crystal structure is governed by the compression of MO_6 octahedron. This is consistent to the fact that the bulk modulus is affected significantly by the substitution of Mg by 2H. The octahedral shared edges are compressed more than the unshared edges, keeping the edge lengths of SiO_4 tetrahedron almost constant. The space group and hydrogen positions of δ-(Al_<0.84>4Mg_<0.07>Si_<0.09>)OOH are investigated using a single crystal synthesized using a multi-anvil apparatus under conditions of 1000 ℃ and 21 GPa. The space group determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction is to Pnn2, with unit cell parameters of a=4.6975(8)Å, b=4.2060(6)Å, c=2.8327(4)Å, and V=55.97(1)Å^3. Partial occupancy of the Al site by Mg and Si suggests the possibility of a limited solid solution between δ-AlOOH, stishovite, and a hypothetical CaCl_2-type Mg(OH)_2 that is 16% denser than brucite. Difference Fourier maps reveal two small but significant Fourier peaks attributable to hydrogen atoms. Atomic distances and angles around the first peak indicate a hydrogen bond with O【triple bond】O distances of 2.511Å, while those around the second peak are suggestive of a bifurcated hydrogen bond with O【triple bond】O distances of 2.743Å and 2.743Å.

Hydrothermal origin of life on the Archean seafloor is becoming a popular theory, besides the idea that the evolution of early biota took place at the submarine hydrothermal environments Abundant submarine hydrothermal sediments have been found in the Archean strata and there exists possibility that remnants of early biota and chemical fossils of their ecosystem were still preserved in these sediments. The main purpose of this study is to identify the remnants of early biota and their ecosystem based on the geological and geochemical ways. In this study, detailed geological surveys were conducted in two areas : the 2.7 Ga Abitibi Greenstone Belt and 3.2 Ga Pilbara Blocks in Australia. Other samples related to Archean submarine hydrothermal activities and modern hydrothermal activities were also subjects for the chemical analyses in this study. The followings are the notable findings from this study : specific hydrothermal alterations by carbon dioxide-rich fluids and mobilization of phosphorous from oceanic crust, age specific activity of methane-related biota and their association with magmatic activity and metal enrichments in organic matter by hydrothermal reaction. New ecological energy exchange system was also found in the modern hydrothermal sediments and its links to Archean ecosystem was also proposed. These achievements were already published in the several international and domestic journals, and also reported at international conferences as invited talks. New theory of biological evolution associated with the contemporary magmatic activity is also proposed from this study.

Baitoushan volcano, situated on the border between China and North Korea, is one of the most active volcanos in the world, and is known by the 10^<th> century big eruption. Our research intends to clarify the details of this 10^<th> century eruption and its historic effects on the surrounding area. For this purpose, we have investigated geological and petrological features of the volcanic products by the field survey on the Chinese area. In addition to this approach, we made the reexamination of the historic documents existing in Korea, China and Japan. The following things have been newly found by this research. (1)The 10^<th> century eruption consists of two eruptive phases with minor dormancy, and the two times of huge ignimbrite eruption have occurred at the very short period. (2)The 9^<th> century eruption, which wasn't known so far, was found. It has possibility that this new eruption has affected the extinction of Bo-Hai dynasty. (3)The 10^<th> century eruption age is around AD 938, based on the chronological study and literature research. (4)The distribution map indicating the "Abolishment of Township" is good agreement with the area of 10^<th> century eruption ejecta. It is considered that this implies the disaster area induced by this big eruption.

Disordered stack ings are commonly 'observed in the metastable phase. In the cases of opal-CT and moganite, the disordered domains have following common features; (1) the stacking sequence are completely disorder without periodic sequences such as highly ordered polytypes; (2) the planar faults are parallel to each other in the disordered domain; (3) the domain of disordered stackings exhibits a thin and platy form, which elongates parallel to the planar defects; (4) the domains of well ordered stackings overgrew on the domain of disordered stackings with very sharp boundary between the two domains (5) The basal plane of the platyshaped domain of disordered stackings is parallel to a singular surface of the crystal, and the singular plane. The disordered, structure is caused by two-dimensional nucleation growth mechanism under highly supersaturated conditions. The results of observations suggest that important factors for formation of metastable phase are supersaturation degree and admissibility of crystal structure for defects.
