The purpose of this research is to elucidate the mediating function of emotions and to clarify the nature of human community that could support good human life based on that function. In order to achieve this goal, our study adopted an interdisciplinary approach and attempted multifaceted investigations of emotions and community, by effectively utilizing the various academic resources of research participants, including philosophy, ethics, and psychology. One of the most notable results is the examinations of the philosophical aspects of the emotional basis of community, which led us back to the Japanese philosophers such as Dogen, Nishida, Miki, Tanabe. Our project includes experimental psychological research on the communal emotions (ex. jealousy and a sense of justice), which resulted in an interdisciplinary collaboration between philosophy and psychology.

Some ancients (e.g. Plato) claimed that one's soul survives one's death; others (e.g. Epicureans and Stoics) denied it; and others (e.g. Aristotle) claimed that part of one's soul survives. In this research project, I considered arguments for, and practical implications of, some of those claims. The main result is my paper read at Symposium Platonicum (International Plato Society) in Brasilia in 2016, which is to be included in Selected Papers (Academia Verlag). There I examined Socrates' final proof of the imperishability of the soul in Plato's PHAEDO, not only as Socrates means it but also as Cebes understands it. In this research, on the whole, my focus fell on Plato, but I also considered Aristotle, moral realism in general, and other topics.

The aim of this study is to propose a new model of understanding a complex relationship between nature and human society. Our method is threefold: (1) philosophical study on a history of the concept of nature; (2) science and technology studies; (3) human geography. First, we analysed the concept of nature in Aristotle, Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger and Blumenberg, as well as the concepts of fate and divine punishment. Secondly, we did two critical studies of Weinberg’s concept of trans-science and Habermas’ concept of technology. And thirdly, we analysed differences in the concept of nature between many cultures and generations. These studies are published in Yutaka Zakota (ed.), Studies in Conceptions of Nature, Fate and Humanity (Tohoku University Press, 2015).

This comprehensive research project of Western Classics Ancient Philosophy examined the concept of justice in Ancient Greek Civilization, by focusing on Plato's theory of justice. The project members read many academic papers at international conferences inside and outside Japan each year, and published many articles and books both in Japanese and English. In particular, we organized the international conference "Freedom and the State: Plato and the Classical Tradition", in Oxford, UK, in August 2012, and the international symposium "Plato and Rhetoric", on the Hiyoshi Campus of Keio University in April 2014. At both conferences, we provided important opportunities of discussing this topic with scholars from all over the world. With these achievements, the project has shown that the Platonic studies in Japan have established a platform for international academic activities in this field.

We created a new model for science communication based on discursive ethics. For this purpose we organized a few occasions for the discussion of how to manage nuclear waste and analyzed the way the discussion went. We learnt the followings: 1. It is unlikely that people with opposing views come to total agreement through discussion. Nonetheless, it is important for us to continue dialogue and try to reach a reasonable agreement. 2. A dialogue between experts committed to different positions can be valuable especially when general citizens watch it and are informed and educated so as to form or revise their views. 3. For a dialogue to be fruitful, there has to be mutual trust among participants, and they have to have certain empathic capacities among other things. 4. A moderator of a dialogue has to be fair, but fairness is different from mere formal neutrality. To be fair one has to be able to make sorts of value judgments properly.

The three main works of political philosophy in ancient greek thought, namely, Plato's Republic, Laws, and Aristole's Politics, turns out to be the ones that have the common aim to investigate what is the humanity as a ultimate end of our life and how to achieve it at political level, though their views or methods are quite different. This universal ideal of politics not only has a great influence on the later Europian world, but also gives suggestions of how we human beings live together.

In the former half of this project I have re-examined and argued for the relevance of Aristotle's concept of the 'energeia' in those problems of contemporary philosophy of mind, about which I have published in 'The Discovery of Mind--When, By whom and How--', in Iwanami Koza Philosophy 5 (2008). At the symposium on Values and Reality held at Tokyo University I argue that contrarily to the appearance the value of good is rather objective, while rights are dependent on human will and constructed by some contracts. I made a full translation of Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, in which Aristotle develops a theory of Demonstrative Science (episteme) with a general plan of forming a comprehensive framework of enquiry.

In this research we discovered that the 'neotenic' nature of man provides the matrix of human culture. With this discovery in background, we specified some significant conditions of human well-being. Of central importance to our research was the insight that some 'narrative' of a life constitutes a human life in its full sense, so that well-being -perfection of human life qua human life-has to be located in the realm of the 'narrative space'. We studied how reason and emotion work in the formation and development of a human life in this space. In the historical branch of our research, Plato and Aristotle were each found to have a distinctive way of speaking about someone's life. The idea elaborated by Fichte and Hegel in particular that realization of universality is a great task for us was seen to have relevance to the present day. The concepts of 'enjoyment' and 'vulnerability' were found to be a useful tool for furthering ethics of care, a promising trend in ethics. We acquired a lot of knowledge regarding several areas of applied ethics. In the context of medical treatment, we learned that frequently one cannot comprehend a patient's wishes unless one understands how she has narrated or would narrate her life. Besides, a patient's life story is in most cases essentially interwoven with the lives of those surrounding him. We also saw that it is important for attempts at restoring scenes of agricultural villages to conceive of such a scene as having a narrative dimension, owing to the fact that such a scene is closely related to the life stories of the farmers. Finally, we learned that conditions of technology affect the well-being of the whole society profoundly, and that this happens in part via sorts of subtle political effects and implications.
