Abstract Ionic transport through porous membranes and porous materials has received enormous attention due to its importance to many applications. An innovative methodology is proposed to study ion diffusion and ion sieving through mesoporous silica membranes (shells). The mobility of fluorescently labeled core particles within a hollow porous shell, filled with an index‐matched electrolyte solution, is observed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The core motion range, i.e., the area explored by the core within the hollow compartment, sensitively changed depending on the local ionic concentration. Monitoring transitions in the core motion range is a practical way to detect which ions can migrate through the shells and on what timescale. For instance, lithium and chloride ions easily diffused through the porous silica shells, resulting in a core motion range that changed relatively quickly upon change of the ion concentrations outside of the shell. However, the motion range changed significantly slower upon changing to a bigger cation (tetraoctylammonium ion). This proof of principle experiment can be explained by the Gibbs‐Donnan effect, revealing that the detection of core motion ranges is a good probe to measure both ion diffusion and ion sieving through porous membranes.

Abstract Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) is an optical pressure-measurement technique that uses oxygen quenching. In unsteady PSP measurements, PSPs necessitate not only pressure sensitivity and response speed but also higher luminescence intensity. In this study, spherical silica nanoparticles are mixed into the paint to achieve a brighter luminescence. We prototype PSPs using particle size and mixing ratio as parameters and evaluate their performance. The results exhibit the luminescence intensity changes due to the low refractive index of silica; the smaller the particle size and the higher the particle ratio, the stronger the luminescence intensity. Silica-based PSPs are approximately 1.5 times brighter than titania-based PSP; which have frequently been used in previous studies. Additionally, a comprehensive performance investigation indicates that the silica-based PSP with the brightest formulation has a pressure sensitivity of 0.72 %/kPa with a response speed of 11.0 µs. These results prove that the higher luminescence is compatible with the high sensitivity and fast response using low-refractive index nanoparticles.

Abstract Polydiacetylene (PDA) is a kind of photopolymerizable polymer, which exhibits a unique color transition in response to external stimuli such as heat, pH, and solvent. PDAs are attractive as eye‐detection stimulus sensors with excellent time performance; however, the sensitivity of PDAs should be improved. Considering the biological membrane‐like structure of diacetylene (DA) vesicles, their modification by incorporating membrane lipids (e.g., diacylphosphocholine, PC) can be used to control the membrane fluidity, and consequently molecular ordering of DAs in the vesicle. Inspired by biological membrane systems, lipid vesicles are employed as platforms to generate PDA, and essential factors that influence the sensitivity of PDA are investigated. By lowering the polymerization temperature, the generation of PDA becomes slower, while the sensitivity improves. By adding PCs at the molar ratio of lipid:DA = 1:1, the sensitivity of PDA can be varied: the PCs with lower phase transition temperatures (Tm) made PDA insensitive, while the PCs with higher Tm improved the sensitivity as compared to pure poly(PCDA). It is concluded that the photopolymerization of DAs with a lower membrane fluidity induces highly sensitive PDA, while the photopolymerization of DAs with a higher membrane fluidity induces insensitive PDA with robustness toward stimuli.

Immobilization of photocatalysts on supports is an important method of adding highly active photocatalysts to a continuous flowing system without the need for photocatalyst recovery. However, direct immobilization prevents exposure to all photocatalytically active surfaces. Therefore, to immobilize particulate photocatalysts, while exposing the photocatalytic surface to organic pollutant water in a continuous flowing system, in this study, we employed double-inverse-opal (DIO) with periodically arranged, interconnected macropores, each containing a single photocatalytic particle. Increasing the macropore size successfully enhanced the decomposition rate of organic dye due to the high diffusion rate of dye molecules in the macropores of thin DIOs. However, an excessive increase in macropore size lowered the decomposition rate of dye molecules because an increase in DIO thickness caused the attenuation of light used to excite the photocatalytic particles. This study presents novel, immobilized photocatalytic DIO-structured particles that can be employed in continuous flowing reaction systems by tuning the photocatalytic particle size, macropore size, and DIO thickness.
