    Deprioritizing and delegitimizing sociologies through global neoliberalization of higher education diminishes societies’ ability to tame wicked problems by removing a discipline that untangles the inherent messiness between anti-environmental acts and social injustice. Attacks include thinning sociology into neoliberal, (neo)colonial tools that, at best, ignore and, at worst, justify hegemony, socio-historical oppressions (e.g. racism, patriarchy, heteronormativity), injustices, inequalities, planetary unsustainability and anthropocentrism. A vital role of higher education in public spheres is teaching students for praxis to solve wicked environmental problems in which transformative sociologies are essential. The conundrum of how teaching sociologies diversifies reflexivity for effective problem-solving is also the reason why the discipline is being attacked – as pedagogical enemies of hegemonies grounded upon neoliberalism – will be unpacked. Ecopedagogical and transdisciplinary approaches to teaching sociologies to end wicked problems will also be highlighted.

    Education is situated between pervasive, multifaceted forces of globalization from above and from below that help and hinder teaching for socio-environmental justice and planetary sustainability. Environmental pedagogues are caught between these forces, complicating teaching students to understand environmental violence in an increasingly globalizing world, connections to social injustices, and valuing Nature’s wellbeing beyond anthropocentric perspectives—all foundational goals of ecopedagogies. We present two case studies that elucidate the enmeshed Nature of the local and the global within student sensemaking. They explore real-world examples of transdisciplinary asset-based environmental learning that counter dominant hegemonic pedagogical approaches that are prevalent due to globalizations from above.

    The handbook offers a wide-ranging topical foci and critical responses to current need for analysis on educational and related social well-being contextually. Attached to this is the assumption that education, at least formal in contemporary global arrangements, should advance people’s socio-cultural and overall livelihood as self-/locally-defined. With this actually not the case in many zones of the world, and with learning and pedagogical contexts mainly responsive to dominant monocentric regimes of education, the handbook’s contents critically problematize these issues. The chapters’ critiques illuminate more inclusive ways to achieve multicentric knowledge and educational possibilities. The Handbook’s scope and organization are as practically comprehensive as possible, while acknowledging that no single volume can cover everything about a given educational area. With this being stated and recognizing the overall interconnecting foci on multiple ways of knowing, learning and teaching possibilities, the areas covered in the Handbook include the following: critical thought systems of education, critical race (and racialization) theories of education, critical international/global citizenship education, and critical pedagogy and literacy studies. These are complemented by critical community engaged learning, critical media and information studies, critical perspectives on science and mathematics education, critical gender/feminist studies in education, and Southern/Indigenous epistemologies of education. The handbook is set apart by other edited publications on critical theories and education in that these complicated, interconnected issues are discussed by scholars diversely located throughout the world. While the terms ‘critical’ and ‘critical education’ commonly appear in educational publications, a comprehensive work that brings all these areas into a critical circle of examining educational perspectives and outcomes leading to ameliorative results is lacking.     This chapter gives an overall introduction to critical theories essential to education, as we lay out the histories, reasoning, needs, and overall structure of the Palgrave Handbook on Critical Theories of Education.     Environmental teaching must deepen and widen students’ understandings on how the rest of Nature is affected by human actions and, consequently, upon each other as we are part of Nature. However, many environmental pedagogies do not critically teach to better understand the inseparable connections between environmental and social violence, and us dominating Nature. Critical, Freirean-based ecopedagogy is essential to read the complex, politically hidden dynamics of socio-environmental actions that lead to injustices and unsustainability (i.e., ecopedagogical literacy). Ecopedagogical reading includes decoding how racism, post-truthism, globalizations, neo(coloniality), patriarchy, heteronormativity, xenophobia, epistemicide, neoliberalism, and their intersectionalities falsely justify socio-environmental injustice and planetary unsustainably. I argue how critical theories are essential within environmental pedagogies, as well as research upon them, for students’ praxis to emerge for determining and doing actions needed to save Earth.

    Environmental pedagogies are not apolitical or universal in their processes, goals, and practices, which form contested terrains of coincidences and conflicts in teaching socio-environmental justice, sustainable development, and/or planetary sustainability. This chapter discusses how to critically compare the commonalities and differences within and between environmental pedagogies through local to global lenses. Achieving socio-environmental justice with planetary sustainability is inherently global in scope; however, environmental teaching must be locally contextual. Intensifying globalization provides both opportunities for environmental teaching, but also processes that counter their goals and effectiveness. How critical comparative education can help construct effective environmental pedagogies through deepened contextual investigation alongside widened global and planetary analysis will be discussed. Comparative de/reconstruction provides examination on how environmental pedagogies teach, or not, how socio-historical oppressions (e.g., coloniality, racism, patriarchy, xenophobia, epistemicide) falsely justifies environmentally violent actions which are inherently connected to social violence. The need to problematize how the following are ideologically and politically defined, framed, and legitimized within teaching are examined: “development,” "livelihood," "sustainability," "economics," "citizenship," and “Nature” (especially epistemological non-/connections with “us”). This chapter critically compares differing environmental pedagogical models and their contextual usages through these aspects, with particular attention to problematizing global North-to-South dominance and analysis of the United Nation's (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Abstract This introduction explores the trends, challenges, and possibilities of comparative and international education (CIE) as identified by six comparativist scholars and incorporates some of my own work on this topic. The scholars’ work had diverse foci; however, the overall theme was CIE needing to (re-)center goals of ending socio-historical oppressions. This is with reflectivity that CIE forms a contested terrain of histories, and too-often current trends, of being political tools for sustaining/intensifying oppressions and dominance over Nature.     In this chapter, Greg William Misiaszek starts with the statement that social injustices from environmental violence and planetary unsustainability will continue within the normalized ideologies of (1) neoliberalism that values individualized profit without concern for environmental impact, and (2) socio-historical superiority of one population over another (e.g., neo-/colonialisms, globalizations from above, racism, patriarchy, xenophobia, homophobia). He adds how environmental pedagogies frequently teach within these oppressive-grounded ideologies reproduce and intensify social oppressions and ecological unsustainability. With these issues, Misiaszek discusses the need for ecopedagogy (environmental pedagogical reinventions based on Paulo Freire’s work) that can center democratic dialogue to critically problematize how “citizenship,” “development,” and “sustainable development” are taught through these ideologies to justify socio-environmental oppression and violence systematically. He points out how Ecopedagogues inherently counter these ideologies that tout such terms as ahistorical, apolitical, and singular in definition and scope, as well as environmental pedagogies grounded by these ideologies.

    To stop the downward spiral of intensifying environmental violence that inevitably leads to social violence we, as humans, need to better understand what is at stake and to determine how to make changes at the root levels. Ecopedagogy is centered on understanding the struggles of and connections between human acts of environmental and social violence. Greg W. Misiaszek argues that ecopedagogies grounded in critical, Freirean pedagogies construct learning that leads to human actions geared towards increased social and environmental justice and planetary sustainability. Throughout the book he discusses the need for teaching, reading, and researching through problematizing the causes of socio-environmental violence, including oppressive processes of globalization and constructs of “development”, “economics”, and “citizenship”, to name a few, that emerge from socio-historical oppressions (e.g., colonialization, racism, patriarchy, neoliberalism, xenophobia, epistemicide) and dominance over the rest of nature. Misiaszek concludes with ecopedagogies' challenges within the current post-truth era and possibilities of reimagining UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Global Citizenship Education (GCE) with its plural coinciding and conflicting models has led us to explore the possibilities of practical-ness of GCE within environmental pedagogies and of the “hard-ness” of GC/E practice and research within India. By deconstructing various understandings and practices, grounded in the voices of the participants in India, we analyze how GCE models in India coincide or conflict within some key Indian epistemologies and social structures keeping in mind strong hegemonic and neoliberal trends in the country. We use our previous research on Freirean-based ecopedagogy to uncover the im/practicalities of GC/E (Global Citizenship and its Education) in connection with environmental pedagogies within educational research and practice. Education towards praxis—to end social and environmental violence—grounds the analysis, from various spheres of citizenship (e.g. the pluralized citizenships) from local to global to planetary, with the chapter focusing on how global citizenship (and its education) de-/aligns and contests with local to national citizenships within India. We argue that for GC/E to be successful in India, the “C” in GCE must be taught with non-Western epistemological understandings. GCE must be woven with ecopedagogy to deepened and widened critical understandings of socio-environmental connections to “unveil” the effects, causes and underlying politics of social oppressions. So in the case of India, a shift towards critical GCEs, as a critical pedagogy that counters hegemony, has the potential to counter narrow, shallow, soft and/or neoliberal models of GC/E which are ineffective and largely oppressive by ignoring contexts with dominant ideologies as unproblematized. This chapter analyzes some key reasons why global citizenship education (GCE) can be viewed as disempowering within the contexts of India, within the specific aspects of environmental and development pedagogies. It focuses on critical environmental pedagogies, inside and outside constructs of “sustainable development,” especially within both authors’ extensive work on Freirean-based ecopedagogy. The chapter discusses how global citizenship de-/aligns with local to national citizenships within India and nature overall as planetary citizenship, outside of anthropocentric citizenships. It also analyzes how the grounding of GCE might be appropriate within the very diverse contexts of India and how such frameworks coincide or conflict with environmental well-being goals. The research in successful environmental pedagogies in India grounded in environment pedagogy practices shows that it is indispensable to understand the setting/context within the context of education towards ecopedagogy or GCE. The complexities and challenges of critical GC/E can be strengths, as the problematizing itself as teaching and learning.

    In support of sustainable development, the United Nations (UN) launched its Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) with the aims of accelerating progress towards universal access to education, good quality learning and the fostering of global citizenship. This paper explores how and to what extent Stoic virtue ethics and critical Freirean ecopedagogies can advance the UN’s vision for progressive educational systems with transformative societal effects. We propose an integrated solution that provides ecopedagogical concepts a more robust philosophical foundation whilst also offering Stoicism additional tools to tackle 21st-century problems, such as climate change and environmental degradation. The result of the paper is the preliminary theoretical underpinnings of an educational framework that encompasses planetary-level concerns and offers a fuller expression of the terms “sustainable development” and “global citizen”.

    Teaching the connections between environmentally‐harmful acts and social conflict is essential but is often ignored in education. This article presents two ways in which these are not taught because of the policies of those who benefit from the ignorance of these connections: first, the avoidance of teaching global‐local connectivity and second, the devaluing of non‐dominant cultures. Ecopedagogy is a democratic, transformative pedagogy centred on increasing justice by critically teaching the politics of environmental issues. I argue that global citizenship education (GCE) must be an element of ecopedagogy to contextually learn globalisation's effects upon local communities. In addition,GCE's goal is to increase students' understanding of diverse cultures to respect them. Ecopedagogy is also essential toGCEto fully teach social conflicts resulting from environmentally harmful acts. I offer policy and pedagogical changes to disrupt reproductive environmental pedagogies that help to sustain environmental ills for ecopedagogy‐GCEmodels to emerge.
