    Abstract The microstructural evolution of the MoSiBTiC alloy by rapid solidification and its effect on oxidation and mechanical properties were investigated in this study. A Mo-5Si-10B-10Ti-10C (at%) alloy was produced by a conventional arc-melting technique in an Ar atmosphere, and then it was rapidly solidified by tilt-casting into a rod-shaped copper hearth. Vickers hardness values increased drastically above 1000 Hv due to the microstructure refinement through rapid solidification. They rose from the center toward the outer surface, ranging from about 1100 to 1300 Hv. Interestingly, the oxidation resistance of the rapidly solidified MoSiBTiC alloy at 1100 °C was dramatically improved, probably due to the microstructure refinement effect with ultrafine grains. However, the fracture toughness value of the rapidly solidified MoSiBTiC alloy was about 8 MPa·m1/2, less than half of the cast and heat-treated MoSiBTiC alloy previously reported. Heat treatment and composition optimization will further improve the performance of the rapidly solidified MoSiBTiC alloy.

    Abstract Titanium carbide (TiC) have a wide off-stoichiometric composition when in equilibrium with the metallic phase. In this case, the off-stoichiometric effect allows the substitution of other transition metals (TM) at the Ti site and vacancy formation at the C site. It leads to changes in the material properties of TiC. Therefore, it is important to investigate the change of material properties with the off-stoichiometric effect. In this study, the elastic properties of (Ti, TM)Cx were focused on. To investigate the change of elastic properties with various transition metals substitution, elastic properties were evaluated by first-principles calculations. From the calculation, it was suggested that bulk modulus is controlled by the 1st and 2nd nearest neighbor bond, but shear modulus is mainly affected by only the 1st nearest neighbor bond. Therefore, it was indicated that proper control of the fraction of transition metals and vacancy could be possible for designing (Ti.TM)Cx with high strength and toughness.

    Abstract B1-type MX ceramics are composed of transition metals (M) and C, N, and/or O (X) occupying the M and X sites, respectively, and having M–X nearest neighbor (NN) bonds and M–M and X–X next nearest neighbor (NNN) bonds. Substitution of the elements and the formation of structural vacancies in B1-type ceramics change the numbers and strengths of the bonds, leading to novel properties. The change in elastic modulus of off-stoichiometric TiC in equilibrium with a Ti–Mo solid solution phase was experimentally investigated based on the rule of mixtures from the Voigt model. The experimentally obtained values agreed well with the results of density functional theory calculations. The bulk modulus (K) of TiC increased from 205.6 to 239.2 GPa as the fraction of Ti sites occupied by Mo increased from 0.11 to 0.33, whereas the Young’s modulus (E) and the shear modulus (G) remained nearly constant. On the other hand, all three elastic moduli decreased with increasing vacancy fraction at the C sites. These results suggest that the M–X bond strength should be the dominant factor in these moduli and the effect of M–M bond on K is greater than that of G and E.

    Abstract (Ta,W)C bulks were prepared by spark plasma sintering. Densification kinetics and solid‐solution formation kinetics were performed on the powder mixtures using TaC and W powders. The as‐received tungsten powder had a spherical shape and rather coarse size. By using the crushed and as‐received powder, it can be suggested that sintering at 2000°C limits the reaction volume to 3–6 μm and hence allows forming a complete solid‐solution using finer powders. The lattice parameter, hardness, toughness, and strength were investigated as a function of the TaC content. The flexural strength of the (Ta,W)C ceramic bulks was investigated up to 2000°C and it was found that the maximum strength was for the 60 mol.% TaC composition. Strength as a function of the temperature tended to increase up to 1200°C followed by a gradual decrease to 2000°C. When the TaC was reinformed by coarse W spheres, the flexural strength monotonically decreased from 570 MPa at room temperature to 220 MPa at 2000°C.

    <title>Abstract</title> The effects of adding Cr and Al on the oxidation behavior of a Ti5Si3-incorporated MoSiBTiC alloy (46Mo–28Ti–14Si–6C–6B, at%) were investigated at 800 and 1,100°C. The addition of Cr and Al largely improved the oxidation resistance of the MoSiBTiC alloy at 800°C due to the formation of Cr2(MoO4)3 and Al2(MoO4)3 in the oxide scales. These protective molybdates mainly formed on the molybdenum solid solution (Moss) and Mo3Si phases that show poor oxidation resistance in the Cr- and Al-free alloy and consequently increased the oxidation resistance of the alloys. However, accelerated oxidation occurred on the 10Al alloy after the long-term oxidation test, suggesting that the formed oxide scale has limited protection ability. At 1,100°C, the addition of Cr and Al also enhanced the oxidation resistance to some extent by forming Cr2O3 and Al2O3 in the oxide scales.

    Previously, we isolated jacalin-related lectins termed PPL2, PPL3 (PPL3A, 3B and 3C) and PPL4 from the mantle secretory fluid of Pteria penguin (Mabe) pearl shell. They showed the sequence homology with the plant lectin family, jacalin-related β-prism fold lectins (JRLs). While PPL3s and PPL4 shared only 35%–50% homology to PPL2A, respectively, they exhibited unique carbohydrate binding properties based on the multiple glycan-binding profiling data sets from frontal affinity chromatography analysis. In this paper, we investigated biomineralization properties of these lectins and compared their biomineral functions. It was found that these lectins showed different effects on CaCO3 crystalization, respectively, although PPL3 and PPL2A showed similar carbohydrate binding specificities. PPL3 suppressed the crystal growth of CaCO3 calcite, while PPL2A increased the number of contact polycrystalline calcite composed of more than one crystal with various orientations. Furthermore, PPL4 alone showed no effect on CaCO3 crystalization; however, PPL4 regulated the size of crystals collaborated with N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and chitin oligomer, which are specific in recognizing carbohydrates for PPL4. These observations highlight the unique functions and molecular evolution of this lectin family involved in the mollusk shell formation.

    <title>Abstract</title>Microstructural evolution in the TiC-reinforced Mo–Si–B-based alloy during tensile creep deformation at 1,500°C and 137 MPa was investigated via scanning electron microscope-backscattered electron diffraction (SEM-EBSD) observations. The creep curve of this alloy displayed no clear steady state but was dominated by the tertiary creep regime. The grain size of the Moss phase increased in the primary creep regime. However, the grain size of the Moss phase was found to remarkably decrease to &lt;10 µm with increasing creep strain in the tertiary creep regime. The EBSD observations revealed that the refinement of the Moss phase occurred by continuous dynamic recrystallization including the transformation of low-angle grain boundaries to high-angle grain boundaries. Accordingly, the deformation of this alloy is most likely to be governed by the grain boundary sliding and the rearrangement of Moss grains such as superplasticity in the tertiary creep regime. In addition, the refinement of the Moss grains surrounding large plate-like T2 grains caused the rotation of their surfaces parallel to the loading axis and consequently the cavitation preferentially occurred at the interphases between the end of the rotated T2 grains and the Moss grains.

    The present work investigates γ-channel dislocation reactions, which govern low-temperature (T = 750 °C) and high-stress (resolved shear stress: 300 MPa) creep of Ni-base single crystal superalloys (SX). It is well known that two dislocation families with different b-vectors are required to form planar faults, which can shear the ordered γ’-phase. However, so far, no direct mechanical and microstructural evidence has been presented which clearly proves the importance of these reactions. In the mechanical part of the present work, we perform shear creep tests and we compare the deformation behavior of two macroscopic crystallographic shear systems [ 01 1 ¯ ] ( 111 ) and [ 11 2 ¯ ] ( 111 ) . These two shear systems share the same glide plane but differ in loading direction. The [ 11 2 ¯ ] ( 111 ) shear system, where the two dislocation families required to form a planar fault ribbon experience the same resolved shear stresses, deforms significantly faster than the [ 01 1 ¯ ] ( 111 ) shear system, where only one of the two required dislocation families is strongly promoted. Diffraction contrast transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis identifies the dislocation reactions, which rationalize this macroscopic behavior.

    <title>Abstract</title> Grade 91 steel is widely used as steam pipes in ultrasupercritical (USC) steam boilers. In residual creep life assessment of the pipes by calculation, one needs creep rupture life of the steel as a function of stress and temperature in a time range longer than 105 h. Four regions with different creep rupture characteristics appear in a stress versus creep rupture life diagram of the steel. Main steam pipes made of the steel are used in a long-term region with low values of stress exponent and activation energy for creep rupture life (referred to as region G in this paper). Creep rupture lives of the steel in this region vary from heat to heat depending on their prior austenite grain size. This paper proposes a grain size-dependent equation representing creep rupture life of the steel in region G. The equation is verified with creep rupture data up to 232,833 h at 600 °C. Region G is absent in some heats with a large grain size. The equation can rationalize the absence in the heats. In a stress versus creep rupture life diagram of grade 92 steel, there is the same long-term region G. In the region, a creep rupture life of each heat is dependent on its grain size as is the case in grade 91 steel. The proposed equation accords well with the creep rupture lives of the grade 92 steel in region G.

    We determined the primary structures of jacalin-related lectins termed PPL3s (PPL3A, 3B, and 3C, which are dimers consisting of sequence variants α + α, α + β, β + β, respectively) and PPL4, which is heterodimer consisting of α + β subunits, isolated from mantle secretory fluid of Pteria penguin (Mabe) pearl shell. Their carbohydrate-binding properties were analyzed, in addition to that of PPL2A, which was previously reported as a matrix protein. PPL3s and PPL4 shared only 35-50% homology to PPL2A, respectively; they exhibited significantly different carbohydrate-binding specificities based on the multiple glycan binding profiling data sets from frontal affinity chromatography analysis. The carbohydrate-binding specificity of PPL3s was similar to that of PPL2A, except only for Man3Fuc1Xyl1GlcNAc2 oligosaccharide, while PPL4 showed different carbohydrate-binding specificity compared with PPL2A and PPL3s. PPL2A and PPL3s mainly recognize agalactosylated- and galactosylated-type glycans. On the other hand, PPL4 binds to high-mannose-and hybrid-type N-linked glycans but not agalactosylated- and galactosylated-type glycans.

    We investigate magnetic properties of FeAl stripes and dots formed on the surface of Fe52Al48 induced by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation. According to the in-plane magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements, the magnetization reversal in FeAl stripes can be explained by the domain-wall (DW) motion model, indicating that the magnetization rotates incoherently. In contrast, the in-plane and polar MOKE measurements reveal that the magnetic easy axis of the FeAl dots exists along the out-of-plane direction and the coercive force Hc shows as large as 1 kOe. These results indicate that the nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation can be expected to serve as a useful tool for obtaining magnetic nanostructures and creating high-Hc materials.

    In this research project, Laves phases are focused on as a factor to increase high temperature strength of ferritic heat-resistant steels. Since Laves phases in steels are thermodynamically in equilibrium with ferrite parent phase, they are composed of multiple elements. Hence, the topologically close-packed structure that is the characteristic crystal structure of binary Fe2M Laves phases (M : refractory metals) is changed by off-stoichiometry, third, fourth and fifth elements such as Al, Cr, B etc. and further the concentration and addition ratio of Laves formation refractory metals such as Nb and W. Moreover, due to change in thermodynamic stability, the precipitation size and distribution as well as the precipitation rate are also largely changed.

    Ductility is the most important mechanical characteristic for metallic materials and has co-relation with the strength and deformability. Those performances are determined by the microstructure, namely crystalline structure. In the meanwhile, it is well known that topology optimization is a powerful design tool to maximize the mechanical performance of structures/materials by applying computers. The present study developed a material design method to maximize the mechanical performance of polycrystalline microstructure, such as stiffness, ductility and thermal conductivity, and verified its usefulness by a series of numerical examples.

    It was discovered by the present researcher that fullerenes decompose into carbon atoms by the solid state reaction with the surface of austenitic stainless steels at the relatively low temperature around 500°C and the carbon atoms which diffuse into the stainless steels and exist inside the parent lattice in supersaturation harden the stainless steel surfaces and improve its corrosion resistance. This phenomenon is called as Low-Temperature Solid Carburization (LTSC). In the present research, the LTSC ability of fullerenes was systematically investigated using C60, and it was found that the LTSC ability is influenced by the grade and texture of austenitic stainless steels and the atmosphere of carburizing-reaction field.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of stacking fault energy on high temperature creep behavior and propose the stacking fault energy as an important strengthening parameters of creep strength of magnesium alloys. Creep behavior (stress and temperature dependence of creep strength) and deformation microstructure of Mg-Y based dilute solid solution alloys have been investigated and clarified that the dislocation climb is significantly suppressed by the decreasing stacking fault energy in magnesium. On the other hand, strong interaction between dislocations with different Burgers vectors were observed during creep around 450K.

    これまでMo過剰なMo-Si-B合金では、1600℃における三元系状態図がいくつか提案されているが、本合金の用途などから、より高温の状態図が求められていた。そこで本研究では、1800℃におけるMo過剰側の三元状態図を実験的に定めると共に、凝固組織から熱処理組織への組織の発達について詳細を検討し、本合金に対する組織制御の指針を得ることができた。一方、このMo-Si-B合金にReおよびTiCを添加し、Mo-Re-Si-B四元系およびMo-Si-B-TiC五元系合金の1800℃における状態図の検討を行った。Mo-Re-Si-B合金では、Re添加によってMo固溶体の体積率が増加し、逆にMo_3Si金属間化合物の体積率が減少すること、ReはMo固溶体中に優先的に固溶すること、Reの添加量が10at%を超えた辺りからMo-Re金属間化合物であるσ相が生成することなどを明らかにした。また、Reを添加することでMo固溶体中のSi濃度も上昇し、このSi量の増加によってMo固溶体は顕著に硬化し、その硬化率がLabusch限界に従うことなどを示すことができた。Mo-Si-B-TiC合金では、TiCが安定相として分離するため、Mo固溶体、Mo_3Si金属間化合物、Mo_5SiB_2ボライド、TiCカーバイドの四相合金となることを、世界で初めて見いだした。また、TiCの添加量を適正化することによって、微細でかつMo固溶体が母相となりうる組成が存在することを発見した。これによって、今後、Mo-Si-B基合金の合金開発と組織制御が大きく前進することが期待される。

    Novel 26 kDa ADP rybosyl transferase-like proteins (ARTL26Ps)and Jacalin-related lectins (JRLs)were isolated from the muntle of Pteria penguin pearl shell. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of ARTL26Ps in biomineralization, we achieved in vitro crystal growth experiments using fluorescent-labeled ARTL26P-1 and-2, resulting these two proteins showed the different distribution and functions although their primary sequences were identical except for only 4 amino acids. ARTL26P-2 promoted the nucleation and increased the number of crystals, while ARTL26P-1 regulated the molphologies of CaCO_3 crystals. Thus the ART-like 26 kDa proteins regulate the aragonite crystal formation via nucleation and growth of aragonite crystals in P. penguin nacre shell. On the other hand, JRLs showed the sequence similarities, interestingly they had quite different carbohydrate binding specificities. Furthermore, CaCO3 crystalization in vitro indicated that PPL2A affected on the biomineralization of Pteria penguin with increasing crystals, while PPL3 inhibited the crystalization.

    The present research studied mechanical properties of nano-lamellar materials consisting of α_2Ti_3Al phase and γTiAl phase. This type of materials contains a large number of α_2/γ interfaces, which act as obstacles to dislocation motion and improve strength of such materials. Elastic limit of nano-lamellar materials is insensitive to lamellar thickness λ, but the interfaces without misfit dislocation provide a higher elastic limit. Work-hardening rate of nano-lamellar materials is inversely proportional to λ, and the coefficient is increased by the introduction of misfit dislocations. Disappearance of α_2/γ interfaces during high temperature exposure causes degradation of nano-lamellar materials. Bands of β_0 precipitates are formed after dissolution of α_2 lamellae when a β_0 phase forming element is added. The precipitation bands give high creep strength after the disappearance of α_2 lamellar.

    TiAl alloys are the most promising light materials for high temperature structural applications. The alloys take a lamellar microstructure consisting of α_2Ti_3Al and γTiAl phases, and their strength is affected significantly by the microstructure of lamellar interfaces. It was examined in this study how to control the microstructure of the interfaces. 1. Misfit dislocation is absent on α_2/7 lamellar interfaces when a y lamella is thin, and the lamellar alloys are in a coherent state (with high internal stress state). Misfit dislocations are introduced onto lamellar interfaces above a critical γ thickness of γ_c and the alloys change to a semi-coherent state. The misfit dislocation network consists of 1/2<110] ordinary dislocations and 1/6<112] super partial dislocations. 2. 1/2<110] dislocations are introduced ahead of the others, because of the larger lattice misfit in <110] directions and the higher mobility of 1/2<110] dislocations. The density of misfit dislocations at a given lamellar thickness increases with increasing amount of lattice misfit. 3. Spacing of misfit dislocations decreases with increasing misfit strain, and is finer in Zr added TiAl alloys than in Nb added alloys. The critical γ thickness γ_c for the introduction of misfit dislocations decreases in the Zr added alloys. Therefore, one can control the introduction of misfit dislocations by changing lattice misfit with alloy addition. 4. Thermal stability of lamellar interfaces is crucial to high creep strength, and α_2/γ interfaces have the highest stability among several types of interfaces in TiAl lamellar alloys. High heating rate during hear treatment results in a high density of α_2/γ interfaces.

  14. Nanoscale Surface Self-Patterning and Functionalizing of Intermetallic Compounds by Atomic Vacancy Controlling

    In the present study, for the rapidly solidified ribbons of Ni-42, 46 and 50at%Al, the concentration of supersaturated atomic vacancies was determined and their self-organization behavior was investigated. The lattice parameter of the three kinds of ribbons was refined by analyzing their XRD profiles, and their density was measured by the constant-volume dilatation method. Using the determined lattice parameter and density, the concentration of supersaturated vacancies was estimated for the three kinds of ribbons, indicating that the concentration clearly shows composition dependence. The aging heat treatment of 973 or 1073 K for 10 h was given to the three kinds of the rapidly solidified ribbons, and then surface morphology changes were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After the aging heat treatment, the nanopore formation near surfaces was confirmed in Ni-46 and 50at%Al, whereas no evident change in surface morphology was observed in Ni-42at%Al. Pore density was higher in Ni-50at%Al than in Ni-46at%Al, but there was no significant change in pore density due to the difference of aging temperature in either case. Therefore, it has been clarified that, in rapidly solidified NiAl intermetallic compounds, nanoporous surfaces can be formed by the condensation process of supersaturated vacancies in the similar manner of FeAl intermetallic compound. The self-organization behavior of supersaturated thermal vacancies was further investigated for Ni-50at%Al single crystal quenched from 1673 K. It was found that nanopores formed near surfaces were faceted by {110} habit planes and accordingly surface morphology in NiAl intermetallic compound formed by the condensation process of supersaturated thermal vacancies was different from that in FeAl intermetallic compound. Furthermore, it was clarified that the pore size and density in NiAl intermetallic compound can be controlled by quenching temperature, aging temperature, aging time in the similar way of FeAl intermetallic compound.

    本研究では、引張もしくは曲げ破断した金属ガラス中のき裂進展に伴うき裂先端部での塑性歪みを観察し、き裂先端での歪み場、応力場解析を行うことによって金属ガラスの降伏応力を見積もる一方、透過型電子顕微鏡やX線回折法によってき裂先端での構造変化、変形によって導入された欠陥やナノ結晶の調査を行い、金属ガラス中のき裂伝播ならびに塑性変形機構を検討することを目的としている。平成17年度では、近年、室温で巨大な圧縮変形能を示すことが見出されたZr_<65>Al_<7.5>Ni_<10>Pd_<17.5>金属ガラスと、比較材としてZr_<65>Al_<7.5>Ni_<10>Cu_<17.5>金属ガラスの室温での引張変形挙動を調査し、破断面および破断部周辺の試料表面の形態を走査型電子顕微鏡、共焦点顕微鏡によって観察した。その結果、引張変形挙動ならびに破断挙動は両者ともほぼ同じであったが、Zr_<65>Al_<7.5>Ni_<10>Pd_<17.5>金属ガラスの方がわずかに塑性伸びを示した。平成16年度の研究で見出された、破断部の試料表面に発生するViscous Flow Depression (VFD) Zonesについては、走査型電子顕微鏡による観察でもZr_<65>Al_<7.5>Ni_<10>Pd_<17.5>金属ガラスでは明瞭に観察することができたが、Zr_<65>Al_<7.5>Ni_<10>Cu_<17.5>金属ガラスではその発生が確認されなかった。このことが、Zr_<65>Al_<7.5>Ni_<10>Pd_<17.5>金属ガラスのわずかな塑性伸びに影響を及ぼしているものと考察された。共焦点顕微鏡によるVFD Zones周辺ならびにShear Bandsの表面凹凸の観察では、Shear Bands部ではViscous Flowの発生は確認されなかった。したがって、Shear Bands発生による試料表面での表面張力ではなく、き裂が試料表面で発生する際のき裂面に対する垂直応力がVFDを誘起するメカニズムであると考察された。このき裂面に対する垂直応力の効果は、これまで金属ガラスの破断で頻繁に観察されている、き裂面が最大せん断応力面からある角度分だけずれる挙動の破壊メカニズムと考えられている。そこで、本研究の成果も考慮すると、金属ガラスの破断挙動には、き裂面に作用する垂直応力が重要な役割を果たしているものと考察された。

    本年度では、FeAl金属間化合物単結晶を作製し、氷水焼入れによって過飽和空孔を導入した。焼入れ温度や時効処理条件を変えて表面に生成するメソポアーのサイズや密度を制御すると共に、表面方位を変化させることによってポアー形状を制御した。メソポーラス化した単結晶基板の片面のみを電気化学的に研摩し薄膜を作製し、透過型電子顕微鏡(TEM)でポアー分布を高分解能で観察することに成功した。その結果これまで走査型電子顕微鏡(SEM)では不明瞭であった10nm以下のポアーの存在も確認された。同時に、{111}面単結晶表面上にアルミナの不動態膜が生成していることを観察した。アルミナはκ-Al_2O_3であり、FeAlの{111}表面に対して{001}面が半整合的に生成しており、酸化過程で基板に対しエピタキシャル成長していることが確認された。メソポアー表面は{100}面で形成されていることから、アルミナ膜のエピタキシャル成長は、機能性タンパク質との相互作用様式に何らかの影響を及ぼすことが予想された。次に、マアナゴの体表粘液から抽出したレクチンの一種、ガレクチンをビオチンで標識化した。この標識化されたガレクチンを含む水溶液を薄膜のメソポーラス表面に滴下した後、アビジンで標識化した5nmの金微粒子を含むコロイド溶液を滴下し、両者を結合させることによりガレクチンを金微粒子で標識化した。これをTEMで観察したところ、時折メソポアー中に金微粒子の存在が確認されたが、ほとんどの金微粒子はメソポアー外部に均一に分布していた。そこで分子サイズが100nm以上あるλDNAをガレクチン水溶液に混合して滴下し、さらに溶媒と金属表面との親和性を高めるためにアセトニトリルを滴下したところ、金微粒子が優先的にメソポアー中に分布する傾向が得られた。以上のことから、ガレクチンをメソポアー内部に優先的に誘導する指針が得られ、しかもその分布をナノスケールで確認する手法を確立した。

    The objective of this study is to understand the effect of metallurgical factors on hydrogen absorbing properties and to indicate the appropriate alloys design of hydrogen storage materials with advanced cyclic properties. The results obtained are summarized as follows Effects of microstructure and composition on hydrogen absorbing properties in binary TiMn_2 based alloy: The hydrogen absorbing properties of binary TiMn_2 based alloys have been investigated as function of composition in the range between Ti-59.4 and -66.8 at.% Mn. The volume of fraction of TiMn_2 phase increases with increasing Mn content. The Mn content of TiMn_2 phase is almost constant atcompositions between Ti-56.4 and -59.4 at.% Mn, while is increases with increasing Mn content at compositions between Ti-59.4 nod -66.8 at.% Mn. Ti-59.4 at.% Mn containing TiMn_2 phase with 60 at.% Mn exhibits the superior hydrogen absorbing capacity and she least degradation of capacity during repeated hydrogen absorption and desorption. It is concluded that both hydrogen absorbing capacity and cyclic property in binary TiMn_2 based alloy are improved by increasing the volume fraction of TiMn_2 phase with keeping Mn content as low as possible. TiMn_2 based alloys: Degradation of the hydrogen absorbing capacity in cyclically hydrogenated TiMn_2 (Ti-60 at.% Mn) with Laves structure was studied by measurement of pressure-composition-isotherm (PCT) curves, X-ray diffraction and microstructure observation. Characteristic changes with cyclic hydrogenation are observed as follows. The hydrogen absorbing capacity remarkably decreases, the lattice constant increases, the amount of hydrogen retained in TiMn_2 increases and it approaches almost zero by dehydrogenation as 673 K in vacuum. Nano-sized regions with Mere patterns are produced in TiMn_2 with hydrogenation and Debye rings corresponding to titanium hydride δ-TiH appear in the diffraction pattern. Based on these observations it is concluded that the degradation of hydrogen absorbing capacity after cyclic hydrogenation is attributable to the introduction of retained hydrogen, heterogeneous strain and/or nano-regions.

    Mesoporous FeAl intermetallic compound formed by vacancy clustering In this study, it was found that a large quantity of micro pores of several nanometers are generated near and interior to the ribbons of B2-type FeAl intermetallic compound produced by a rapid solidification technique when the ribbons are annealed around 723 K. Furthermore, in this study, the morphology and crystallography of the nanopores was clarified by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Moreover, considerations based on energetics concerning vacancy clustering was given by thermal analysis. Microstructure and High Temperature Oxidation Resistance of Recycled Fe-Al alloys Using ground sludge of bearing steels yielded when bearings are manufactured and pellets of waste aluminum cans, recycled Fe-Al alloys were produced. In this study, microstructure of the produced alloys was observed by scanning electron microscopy, constituent phases therein were indentified by X-ray diffractometry, high temperature oxidation resistance of the alloys was examined, and then the potential of the recycled Fe-Al alloys was discussed. Consequently, the recycled Fe-Al alloys exhibit excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures, which comparable to binary Fe-Al intermetallic compounds, indicating it is possible to produce highly value-added Fe-Al alloys by utilizing scraps. Theoretical Study on Mechanical Properties of Aluminides and Silicides In this study, elastic stability of dislocations was investigated for FeAl and Fe_3Si in order to give some interpretations to mechanical properties of the compounds. Furthermore, a semi-empirical model was proposed to predict the cleavage resistance of the compounds, and this model was found to be very useful to do that by comparing several experimental data previously published.

    Strength, fracture toughness and oxidation resistance were selected among many properties for high temperature structural materials and harmonic material design was studied. In-situ composites consisting of ductile particle-dispersion refractory intermetallics and ceramics in which both the phases are thermodynamically equilibrated were synthesized by controlling alloying behavior and microstructure. Directionally solidified eutectic ZrC/Mo in-situ composite, which is prepared by the high frequency floating zone melting method, shows the room temperature fracture toughness of about 20 MPam^<1/2> and high strength at 1500C of 420 MPa. The high fracture toughness is attributable to crack deflection arising from decohesion between ZrC and Mo and the high strength at 1500C is due to solid solution strengthening and microstructure refinement. High temperature strength of Mo-Si-B alloys is shown to increase significantly by alloying without sacrificing room temperature fracture toughness. The new concept of "pseudo in-situ composite" is presented and pseudo in-situ Mo-Si-B-O composite is found to exhibit excellent oxidation resistance at 1400C. Based on the fundamental research of the diffusion bonding, clad hot rolling is successfully carried out using Fe_3Al base alloys and CrMo steel. The clad hot rolled sheet shows harmonically high strength, good oxidation resistance and high fracture toughness.

    High temperature deformation behavior was investigated by using Nb solid solution single crystals in order to obtain fundamental data for development of Nb base in-situ composites for very high temperature structural applications. Nb-Ta and Nb-Mo alloys were se1ected to meet this objective, because Ta has a very small size misfit and shear modulus difference to Nb, while Mo has a significant size misfit and shear modulus difference to Nb. hi addition, both Ta and Mo have no scavenging effect in alloying with Nb, which means that the addition of these elements reveals the intrinsic nature of solid solution strengthening. Solid solution strengthening of Nb solid solutions, Nb-Ta and Nb-Mo, at low and intermediate temperatures can be interpreted in terms of size misfit and i-s (interstitial-substitutional) interaction. TEM observations indicate that deformation microstructures consist of long, straight screw dislocations, suggesting that screw dislocations interact strongly with Ta-O and Mo-O.This interaction is confirmed by the fact that marked anisotropy appears in the orientation dependence of yield stress and slip plane depending on oxygen content. At high temperatures yield stress of Nb-Ta-O decreases rapidly with increasing temperature, while that of Nb-Mo-O keep a high stress level up to about 1500K.Deformation microstructures of Nb-Mo-O at high temperatures consist dominantly of edge dislocations, suggesting the interaction of edge dislocations with Mo-O.Internal friction measurements reveal that at low and intermediate temperatures screw dislocations interact with Snoek atmosphere generated by Ta-O and Mo-O which receive the i-s effect, whereas at high temperatures edge dislocations interact with Cottrell atmosphere generated by Mo-O.

    In order to develop a powder production process of structural intermetallics via hydrogen pulverization and to improve cycling lifetime of hydrogen absorption and desorption in hydrogen absorbing intermetallics, hydrogen pulverization mechanisms have been investigated using Nb_3Al and NbCr_2 base intermetallic alloys. Since the ability of hydrogen absorption is sensitive to the surface oxide film covering intermetallics, all samples were prepared without exposing to air in a specially designed closed system. In this system a glove box is attached to a vacuum furnace. Hydrogen absorption-desorption curves were measured, lattice constants were calculated before and after hydrogenation, and shape and size of pulverized particles were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. In Nb-Al binary alloys pulverization occurs only in two phase alloys, Nb_3Al/Nb and Nb_3Al/Nb_2AI.Monolithic Nb_3AI, Nb_2A1 and Nb are not pulverized, although they can absorb a considerable amount of hydrogen. In Nb-Cr binary alloys, only Nb solid solution can absorb hydrogen among constituent phases, Nb, NbCr_2, and Cr. Pulverization takes place only in Nb/NbCr_2 two phase alloys. When NbCr_2 is alloyed with Ti, it can absorb hydrogen. Ti-containing monolithic NbCr_2 is pulverized by hydrogenation. From these results, it is concluded that pulverization is initiated at a crack in an intermetallic compound which is caused by difference in dilatation either of both phases accompanied with hydrogen absorption or of surface and interior generated by a gradient of hydrogen content.

    本研究では、鉄アルミナイド中の侵入型元素の濃度変化とそれらが及ぼす機械的性質への影響を明らかにする目的で、高純度鉄アルミニウムの作成と単結晶を使って歪み時効に注目しながらその力学特性を調査した。高純度鉄アルミナイドの作成に対しては、原料となる鉄とアルミニウムをこれまで報告者が用いてきた99.99mass%のものに加えて、99.999mass%高純度鉄と99.9999mass%高純度アルミニウムを用いてアーク溶解法によって熔製したほか、Bridgman法と浮遊帯溶融法による高純度化の実験も行った。その結果、次の点が明らかになった。アーク溶解直後の濃度変化は現在のところ詳細に調査中であるが、その後にBridgman法および浮遊帯溶融法を行った場合の置換型不純物元素濃度は、高純度化を試みているにも関わらず原料と大きな差異はなく、またアーク熔解時に混入したであろうと思われる一部元素の濃度増加も見られた。一方侵入型元素については、窒素、酸素は原料に対してかなり低減されていた。ところが炭素は試料によって多少の差はありつつも、一様に増加していることが確認された。これは、アーク熔解準備中に様々な形で混入した汚れによるものであると考えられるが、このような炭素の存在は、脱酸、脱窒にはむしろ効果的であったと考えられ、高純度鉄アルミナイドの作成には炭素濃度の制御が重要であることが示された。また水素濃度も、原料とほぼ同程度であった。一方報告者らは、鉄アルミナイドは大気中の水分と反応して水素濃度が高まることを見出しているが、この水素濃度の増加は極めて表面近傍の現象であることが示唆された。次に、単結晶を用いた力学特性の調査結果であるが、炭素濃度の異なる2種類の結晶について圧縮試験、歪み速度急変試験、応力緩和試験などを試みた。その結果、降伏応力の温度依存性に対し炭素濃度の差はほとんど見られず、また低炭素材では変形中のセレーションは見られたものの静的歪み時効現象は発現せず、鉄アルミナイドの降伏強度の逆温度依存性発現機構が、歪み時効によるものではないことが示唆された。

    Based on the obtained results in the proceding years, model composites of B doped Ni-rich Ni_3Al reinforced with W fibers are successfully fabricated by isothermal forging Ni_3Al plates sandwiching W fibers at 1373K to 1473K.It is found that isothermal forging of cold rolled Ni_3Al plates enables better consolidation and lower forging temperature than that of recystallized Ni_3Al plates. No reaction zone is formed at interfaces of as-fabricated composites. However, SEM/EDX result reveals that W and Ni diffuse each other, suggesting that strong bonding is produced at the interfaces. A stress-strain curve of the composite tensile tested at ambient temperature exhibits serrations resulting from brittle failure of W fibers. No pull-out of W fiber are observated in a fracture surface, indicating that cohesive strength between W fibers and matrix is very high. Deformation and fracture behavior of the composites at elevated temperatures are influenced by those of monolithic Ni_3Al alloys. Yield strength is higher in the composites than in the monotilluc alloys at all temperatures tested (ambient to 1323K). Especially, increase in strength by the reinforcement is remarkable (1.5 to 2 times) in the low (ambient to 973K) and high (above 1273K) temperature region. Strengthening is not attained in the intermediate temperature region (1073 to 1173K) because of brittle intergranular fracture in the matrix. Tensile strength in the low temperature region (e.g. 873K) is lower than that calculated by the low of mixtures, suggesting that B segregation to the W/Ni_3Al interfaces leads to decrease in B content at grain boundaries in the matrix. Tensile strength in the high temperature region (e.g. 1323K) is in fairly good agreement to the calculated value. It is revealed that W/Ni_3Al composites posses high strength over monolithic Ni_3Al alloys at temperatures up to 1323K.Holding above 1373K produces an interface place W_3Ni and Kirkendall voids, thereby reducing strength of the composites.

    1.研究の背景 2011年3月11日以降、原子力発電の安全性に大きな疑問が寄せられる一方、石油資源の枯渇や二酸化炭素排出削減等、電力需給、ひいては地球環境問題の解決に向けて、我が国は抜本的な技術改革を迫られている。現在、ガスタービン型発電機やジェットエンジンの心臓部である高圧タービンブレードには、最も優れた高温材料であるニッケル基超合金が使用されている。しかし、ニッケル基超合金の融点は1450℃程度であり、このことによってエネルギー変換効率は45%程度に停まっている。エネルギー効率をさらに高めるには、1500℃以上の超高温状態で稼働する新しいエネルギー変換システムを開発する必要があり、そのためにはニッケル基超合金の融点や高温特性を凌ぐ、新しい超高温材料の創製とその実用化が不可避である。 2.研究の目標 高融点化合物で強化されたモリブデン材料を新たに探査・合成し、1500℃以上の超高温下で、その超高温特性および耐熱メカニズムを明らかにする。それによって、ニッケル基超合金の高温特性を凌ぐ、究極の耐熱性を有する新しい超高温材料を創製する。 3.研究の特色 冷却や熱遮蔽コーティングが無くても、1500℃以上の超高温状態で良好な耐熱特性を発揮する超高温材料を、高融点金属モリブデンを使って世界で初めて提案する。大型試料の合成プロセスや超高温材料試験法など、超高温材料の研究推進に障害となる様々な問題点を、先駆的超高温技術の導入により解決する。 4.将来的に期待される効果や応用分野 航空機のジェットエンジンや火力発電プラントのガスタービンは、高出力化の一方でエネルギー効率が理想的なレベルから乖離し、エネルギー損失は増大する傾向にある。超高温材料の提案は、高性能な次世代型エネルギー変換システムの創成につながり、航空・宇宙産業や発電分野で大きなブレークスルーを生み出す。
