    Abstract There has been substantial scholarly interest in extralinguistic cultural references (ECRs) in translation, especially in audiovisual translation (AVT). However, most scholars have investigated subtitling from English into other languages. Although China has a long tradition of film production, few studies have investigated the subtitling of ECRs from Chinese into English. This article attempts to remedy this by investigating the translation strategies, translation strategy distribution, and fidelity indexes of six subtitled versions of Chinese-language films. We compare our results with Gottlieb’s (2009) results on Danish subtitles, and find that both Chinese and Danish subtitlers hold a target-oriented attitude. We then investigate the share of the strategies in the subtitling of ECRs across different Chinese films and determine that this varies by genre and that the difference in the fidelity index among films of different genres is substantial. The translation of epic films appears to be highly faithful, whereas that of crime and gangster films is much less faithful.

    The goal of this research project was to build semantic maps of specific grammatical categories, especially “case”. Semantic maps two-dimensionally represent semantic and functional similarities that can be extracted from the polysemy of linguistic forms from various languages. We accomplished the goal of building a semantic map of the case area, furthermore accomplishing a second goal, namely to give a diachronic dimension to this map. Our diachronic research was based on the concept of grammaticalization. We furthermore showed that semantic change accompanying grammaticalization always proceeds in the direction of increased speech-act orientation.

    The purpose of this project is to explore the integration of lexical information with event structures on the basis of lexical semantic models and studies on grammatical constructions. There are three major issues to be dealt with in this project: (1) Promotion of studies on the lexicon within the framework of the Generative Lexicon Theory, where we aim to solve the problem of how qualia (lexical-semantic information) come to determine the interpretation of event structures, (2) Elucidation of the subjectivity in language; how subjectivity is related with the interpretation of event structures (of psychological predicates), and (3) New perspectives on lexicalization/grammaticalization with respect to the integration of lexcal information with event structures. We aim to show that some typological universals underlie the process of grammaticalization in which lexical information is integrated with event structures.

    This research project dealt with the construction of semantic maps based on cross-linguistic data, and focusing on the area of comitative and instrumental case. In four years, we have been able to collect cross-linguistic data in the area case, far beyond comitative and instrumental and build a number of semantic maps based on these data. These maps were presented on international conferences and in international journals. Secondarily, we also collected data and built maps in the area of modality, especially concerning the relationship between modality and voice and possession. Lastly, we were able to partially add diachronic information to the synchronic relationships represented in the maps.

    This is a comprehensive study of phonological theories and phonological phenomena encountered in Japanese, English, Chinese, French, Classical Greek, etc. Some of the major findings have already been presented at a number of international conferences such as LP 2002, the International Phonology Conference at Toulouse, etc. The major results of this project are : (1)A new version of Optimality Theory is proposed, based on the separation of phonological and phonetic phenomena, and a new theory of the syllable is also proposed. (2)Two Japanese dialects, i.e., Tokyo Japanese and Kagoshima Japanese are closely investigated : The accentual property of compound nouns consisting of 2 moras+2 moras of Tokyo Japanese is made clear, and how the temporal control of diphthongs and long vowels in Kagoshima Japanese, which is one of the typical syllabic dialects in Japan, is closely examined., based on a number of fieldwork studies. (3)Criteria for deciding where the word accent is posited are established and new analyses on accentual properties of Classical Greek and stump words in English are proposed, based on these criteria. (4)The interface between phonology and other linguistic areas is examined and discussed with special reference to Old Nordic alliterative verse, The Edda, and a number of English songs. (5)A number of new insights are obtained, based on the re-analysis of the phonological systems of Phonology of Central China『中原音頭』. (6)A number of new insights are also obtained concerning word-internal syllabic structure, and constraints in Optimality Theory are re-examined and classified, dispensing unnatural ones. (7)The segmental representation of French nasal vowels is established, and a number of phonological properties are shown to be accounted for in terms of Optimality Theory

    Research during the, first three years of the present project has produced some unexpected results. Of particular importance is the following discovery, by the Project Leader. The perfect auxiliaries in Old Japanese, -tu and -nu, display a close distributional correspondence to the European auxiliaries HAVE and BE, particularly to hebben and zijn in Dutch, not only in the core cases where -tu/ hebben appear with transitives/ unergatives and -nu/ zijn with passives/ unaccusatives, but also in the following exceptional cases : Dutch is known to have a few transitive verbs, such as FORGET and PASS, which exceptionally select zijn ; Old Japanese also has a small class of exceptional transitives, among which are the verbs meaning FORGET and PASS. Since this is thought not likely to be accidental, the reasonable conclusions are that -tu/-nu selection and hebben/zijn selection are essentially the same phenomenon, and it is by the very nature of this phenomenon that verbs like FORGET are favored as exceptions aver many other transitive verbs. Auxiliary selection is therefore a phenomenon not confined to European languages -a conclusion which throws fresh light upon some important issues in the theory of auxiliary selection. The Project Leader has already published two articles on this subject in refereed journals in Japan and Korea (JOURNAL of THE APANESE GRAMMAR SOCIETY and LANGUAGE RESEARCH). ; the most comprehensive discussion of this subject and some other related matters are presented in a long paper which is to appear in JOURNAL of EAST ASIAN LINGUISTICS (U.S.A.) The Project Leader and the investigators corroborated on various issues in lexical semantics and produced some substantial results, including "Same Typological Implications of Mongolian Resultatives," ENGLISH LINGUISTICS 19, pp.366-391 (by the Project Leader) and "Reflexives and resultatives : some differences between English and German," LINGUISTICS 40/5, pp.961-986 (by Toshiaki OYA)
