Improving agricultural research and education is highly recommended to control agricultural development and environmental sustainability in Cambodia. Agricultural research mostly focuses on interviews with farmers as a first measure in developing countries, but a lack of quantitative accuracy remains one of the major constraints. In this situation, we conducted educational activities for master’s degree students of the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) to append agronomic information with popular equipment in interdisciplinary fieldwork in Pursat Province, Cambodia. For the popular equipment, an RGB camera, a reflectometer as well as pH and EC meters were selected. The agronomic information collected by the students supported the results obtained during the interviews. For example, the difference in fertilizer application between the irrigated and nonirrigated areas was confirmed by the soil ammonium concentration evaluated with a reflectometer; the difference in rice growth among water conditions was confirmed by the leaf area percentage evaluated with an RGB camera. Since the majority of the students lacked agricultural and statistical knowledge, the agronomic information quantified by popular equipment provided proper educational materials. The interdisciplinary fieldwork also indicated serious problems in the study area, such as low beneficial crop production and environmental sustainability. To overcome these problems, improving agricultural education is required to foster skillful agricultural professionals, and the quantification of agronomic information is an essential issue.

Northeast Thailand is the largest rice cultivation region in Thailand, but the rice yield there is quite low. Soil salinity is one of the major yield restricted factors, is derived from underground rock salt, and is predicted to expand in the future. This study focused on evaluating rice productivity related to salinity conditions in Khon Kaen Province, Northeast Thailand. The field investigations were conducted from 2017 to 2019 in farmer fields in severe, moderate, and slight soil salinity classes determined by the Land Development Department of Thailand. The soil salinity on the basis of the electric conductivity of saturated soil extract (ECe) varied year to year, which seemed to be associated with precipitation. The difference in soil salinity between classes was obvious only in the drought year 2018, and reflected in the rice yield, although severe drought devastated rice yield in some fields. Plenty of rainfall may have alleviated soil salinity and rice yield reduction in other years, causing differences in rice yield that were not significant among soil salinity classes. However, salinity level evaluation by the USDA based on ECe showed that rice yield was damaged depending on the level. This study indicates that ECe-based evaluation is recommended for soil salinity in relation to rice productivity. The spatial and temporal evaluation for rice production may benefit farmers. The results in this study also showed rice production largely varied even in similar salinity levels, implying that salinity damage can be alleviated by farmer management.

Understanding the temporal and spatial variability in crop yield is considered as one of the key steps in agricultural risk assessment. Therefore, a study of an irrigated area in Cihea, West Java, Indonesia, was conducted to assess rice yield per field using SENTINEL-2 imagery and yield observation data in 2018 and 2019. The study area is located in the Citarum River basin. SENTINEL-2 images were used to derive paddy rice’s growth curve and estimate rice growth stages based on the normalized difference vegetation index. Using these results, the regression model formula using Band 4 (665 nm) and the normalized difference water index in the ripening stage was created (R2 = 0.40, RMSE = 1.21 t/ha). The results from this model were used to generate yield maps, which illustrated a distinct spatial variation in rice yield, such as the average rice productivity in the study area was relatively high, however, the difference between years tended to be small in the upper stream area. The results of this study show that this method is effective in this area to monitor rice yield condition and distribution.Understanding the temporal and spatial variability in crop yield is considered as one of the key steps in agricultural risk assessment. Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) is one of the main diseases in Indonesia that causes a 90% reduction in grain weight. Multispectral imaging may be used as a quick and effective method for damage assessment and is expected to utilize on agricultural insurance in Indonesia. Data were collected at the rainy season and dry season 2018 in Farmers rice field at Bali Province. Vegetation indices (NDVI, GNDVI, and VARIred-edge) was analyzed using QGIS 2.18 from multispectral images. Some vegetation index shows positive correlation with SPAD and negative correlation with DSI (%). VARIred-edge has a higher relationship with DSI (R2: 0.8443) than NDVI (R2: 0.8291) and GNDVI (R2: 0.5463) at the average value on each location, but the relation seems to be affected by that relation between SPAD and LAI. Further data and analysis are required.

In tropical mountainous areas, soil degradation and yield decrease have been anticipated due to conversion from shifting to continuous cultivation and the introduction of cash crops. In our previous report, we quantified the decrease in maize yield under continuous cultivation in farmers' fields in Laos. In this report, we focused on soil nutritional conditions under continuous cultivation in the farmers' fields. For the purpose, twelve soil properties were investigated over two years from three sample sites in each of the 40 farmers' fields with the duration of continuous cultivation varying from 1 to 30 years. Total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, and exchangeable calcium in the soil decreased with increasing duration of continuous cultivation in the sloped fields. These soil nutrients decreased to around half of the initial content in these 30 years. However, the decreasing rates of TC and TN were negligible in the flat fields. Other soil properties such as clay and exchangeable magnesium were not related to the duration of continuous cultivation in both sloped and flat fields. The reduction in maize yield was mainly explained by TC, but the determination coefficient was only 0.24. Although further analysis is required to quantify the effect of soil nutrients on maize production, the development of integrated soil management would be necessary in the sloped fields for sustainable crop production in the study site.

Both the simulation model and remote sensing have been extensively researched since the 1970s, and it is considered that the technologies have not yet reached the practical level despite the impression that they have almost reached it. In this article, The authors discussed the recent research trends, issues and future prospects of these technologies. Simulation models predicting the growth and yield of crops have been successful in future projections under the global warming environment, but has not yet been developed for cultivation support in Japan. This is thought to be due to the fact that much input data is required and the output remains within the range of known knowledge. Meanwhile, the price of UAV(Unmanned Air Vehicle) has been reduced in recent years, which makes farmers available for remote sensing. However, UAV is mostly used just to take photographs from the sky. The strategy to develop these technologies for farmers is necessary by clarifying the concept, data nececity and cultivation support. The authors conducted researches on remote sensing, simulation models, and their integration, mainly in farmer fields in Southeast Asia in relation to farmer's cultivation management and climate change impact assessment. Currently the authors are developing cultivation support technology for the large-sized field of agricultural corporations newly farmed in Sendai after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Although rice growth and yield has been successfully simulated with remote sensing data, further development is necessary in terms of effective cultivation support. Due to evolution of machine learning such as deep learning, technology to extract information from images and mass data is expected to be incorporated in agricultural sector. However, analogy from the results of data dependent models such as nonparametric models, it seems difficult to obtain information beyond the known by itself. The authors are convinced that analysis with directionality such as simulation model is required.

Rice yields at the Sangker river basin in western Cambodia are simulated by a coupled model of the distributed hydrological model WEB-DHM and the rice growth model SIMRIW-rainfed. The results are validated by in-situ statistical data and FAOSTAT. Then, future rice yields are also simulated by using GCMs outputs. In addition, a simple irrigation model is introduced into the coupled model. By using this model, rice yields in consideration of climate change and irrigation are assessed.<br>In this study, effectiveness of irrigation in this river basin is shown for both of the present and future climates. The results showed that, by constructing irrigation facilities, a stable rice yield can be obtained even if no yield is obtained at rain-fed paddy fields. Also, this study showed that a variation of future rainfall pattern will affect a variation of rice yield.

Leaf dynamics is one of the important characteristics in rice (Oryza sativa L.) because it determines dry matter productivity. Nevertheless, few studies have evaluated the genotypic variation in leaf dynamics. This study conducted one-week-interval nondestructive measurements by using plant canopy analyzer, and parameterized leaf dynamics for a rice diversity research set of germplasm (RDRS) and high yielding varieties. Three year experiment in Kyoto University showed large genotypic variations in 5 indexes of leaf dynamics, which consisted of 4 parameters from the nondestructive measurements (relative growth rate of LAI, the maximum growth rate of light interception, days to 80% coverage and extinction coefficient) and LAI at heading from destructive measurement. The significant differences among genotypic groups were observed in relative growth rate of LAI, the maximum growth rate of light interception, days to 80% coverage. High-yielding varieties released by IRRI had higher values of the maximum growth rate of light interception, suggesting that the varieties have been improved in terms of canopy development. In contrast, since Takanari and Milyang23 didn't have extreme characteristics in leaf dynamics, further improvement may be possible.

This study conducted covariance structure analysis in order to quantify the relationship among factors which caused field-to-field variability in 'Tanbaguro' production, using the data obtained by field investigations for 3 villages of Kyoto prefecture in 2007 and 2008. Firstly, we developed a structure equation model including 26 observed variables and 8 latent variables. The observed variables were consisted of soil chemical properties, weather condition and crop growth. The model explained 68% of sample covariance matrix which consists of covariance among observed variables. However, result suggested that the model was unstable because of too many factors. Accordingly, we improved the model by reducing the factors on the basis of causal coefficients. The improved model obtained 14 observed variables and 3 latent variables, and explained 79% of the sample covariance matrix. The improved model also suggests that early growth is important to obtain higher yield, and that yield and grain size are closely related with nitrogen status in a plant which defined by nodule condition and leaf color. The effect of water should be incorporated to the model in the next step.

A water budget equation model was developed to support farmer's decision for irrigation to his fields in the previous study. This study applied the model to farmer's fields actually, and evaluated a method to estimate model parameter for available water holding capacity (AWHC). Since the estimated volumetric soil moisture content (SMC) was well correspondent with the measured SMC, the model was able to evaluate the fluctuation of water availability in farmer's fields. Rate of available water (Aw) to AWHC (Aw/AWHC) calculated from the model was linearly related to change of instrument reading per day (&Delta;IR) in the simple soil moisture measuring system developed by Kurose (2006). In order to estimate AWHC, changes of instrument readings (IRs) for 3 periods were necessary for each field. Estimated AWHC varied from 24 to 73mm among investigated fields, and the value made it possible to predict daily change of IR. It is important to enhance reliability on the basis of more data.

To assess the feasibility of developing an efficient rice cultivation support system which can effectively increase the rice production and also realize environmental conservation in Asia, the estimation of rice yield using remotely sensed data was carried out in Hokkaido, Japan. The multiple linear regression analysis and the projection pursuit regression analysis were adopted to estimate the rice yield from different resolution satellite data about three different rice varieties. The results showed that the predictive error of rice yield derived by the projection pursuit regression analysis was smaller than the value derived by the multiple linear regression analysis. The lowest predictive error was obtained using SPOT5 with 10m resolution data. The creation of yield estimation model for different rice varieties was an effective method to reduce the predictive error.

In Indonesia, agricultural fields have the problem of soil loss. The USLE model can estimate annual soil loss and it's composed five factors. There are two purposes in this study. First is to evaluate accuracy of ASTER GDEM comparing ground observation data for calculate topographic coefficient (LS) which requires watershed area data and slope angle data. Second is to compute the potential risk of soil loss in Cianjur using LS, land use coefficient (C) and soil coefficient (K). C and K factors are given from empirical constants. And the high risk areas are found in the parts of northwest and southeast.

Because thermal infrared radiation from crop canopies is reflected with the transpiration rate of the canopy, remote sensing of this radiation is useful for evaluating plant physiological status nondestructively. However, because the evaluation requires microclimate data, such as solar radiation, air temperature and wind velocity, in general methods, the application is mostly limited to surface-based observation. To eliminate these constraints, we developed an evaluation method that requires vapor pressure in the atmosphere in addition to canopy temperature. This manuscript describes the proposed method and discusses its applicability to the field.

Climate change impacts on rice production systems in northeastern Thailand were evaluated, and the bottlenecks and feasibility of weather index insurance as an adaptation measure were examined. Multiple regression analysis of seasonal precipitation and rice production showed that the period of insurance index (July-September) was appropriate for most provinces with a positive correlation with production. The expected value of insurance payments received by farmers household was calculated based on the frequency of damage, and the frequency of index setting was also evaluated to be generally appropriate. In recent years, the ratio of damage to farmers household income has been decreasing, and the ratio of agricultural damage has been less than 10% since 1994. Therefore, the needs for weather index insurance for rainy season rice was judged to be low.

This study aimed to develop a method for determining the severity of bacterial leaf blight disease and rice blast disease and evaluating the degree of yield reduction using UAV images and crop models in Indonesia. Although field surveys by visiting Indonesia from Japan could not be conducted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, rice disease data and UAV images were obtained from our counterparts, and image normalization was applied to develop a method for determining disease severity that is not affected by different cropping seasons. Furthermore, yield prediction using the SIMRIW-RS simulation model after adjusting parameters in West Java was confirmed to correspond to the measured yields. The same model was also used to evaluate yields incorporating effects of blast disease, and it was possible to predict a trend toward lower yields in areas where the area of leaf blast lesion was large.

Maize was cultivated for 30 years without fertilizer application in Sainyabouli Province in Laos. During the cultivation, the maize yield has continuously decreased and the production was lower than the profitable level in some places. Accordingly, conversion from maize to cassava has been promoted. However, the production and the price of cassava is decreasing. These constraints make farmers start cultivating cowpea, because it relatively maintains soil fertility and has relatively higher price. In order to develop the sustainable cultivation method, quantitative evaluation for landuse, soil fertility and crop production is necessary. This study suggests that the combined method of satellite and drone remotesensing with field investigation is effective method for the purpose.

In Mekong River Basin, severe floods and droughts often occurred. Especially in Northeast Thailand where the irrigation ratio of agricultural land was still low, agricultural productivity had been unstable. Therefore, in this study, agricultural damage function was estimated to evaluate the impact of future climate change on agricultural economic loss. As a result, the relation between wet season rice production and 3 month accumulated rainfall (June-Aug) was high and positive. And then, economic loss by weather induced agricultural damage was estimated and impact on farmer’s household income was evaluated by using the agricultural statistic and rice price data from 1981 until 2013. Recently, agricultural economic loss of around 600 million Baht was often occurred in northeast Thailand. However, farmers household income was mostly relying on non-agricultural sector so that agricultural economic loss was less than 10% of their annual income.

A statistical analysis on regional and decadal variation of climate and soybean yield showed that soybean production is potentially negatively affected by high temperature. Divergent varieties including World Soybean Mini Core-collection were grown in the field under tropical climate. It was proved that soybeans from temperate region is lower yielding than those from tropical regions and Japanese soybeans were particularly less stable in yield and seed quality. The crop physiological attributes were examined for tropical and temperate varieties under tropical environment. Temperate soybeans showed inferior physiological activity of crop canopy than tropical elite variety and this was attributed to difference in leaf conductance and stomatal density. For future breeding of better adaptation to increased temperature, two varieties, DS25-1 from USA and Tanggamus from Indonesia were selected by their high and stable performance of quality, harvest index and/or biomass productivity.

This study evaluates the potential of agricultural water saving, and examines the possibility of compensation for water saving from urban area to rural area. We found that at the end of the dry season when water tends to lack, if rice planting in upper stream area is stopped, the water supply to down-stream will increase from 9 (m3/s) to 14 (m3/s) .The average per capita per day water consumption in Indonesia is 180 L /day/person. It means 500,000 people live with 1 (m3/s), and this is considered an enough amount of saving water. On the other hand, farmers’ participation in PES program is affected by their social networks. For PES to be successful it is important to reduce the risk of small-scale farmers.

From the aspects of food security, development of evaluation method for crop production is recommended by utilizing satellite-based remote sensing. This study tried to use synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to evaluate rice production in Thailand, Lao PDR and Indonesia, where the production varies year-to-year. The results showed that the method based on SAR was unsatisfied to evaluate leaf area index (LAI) or yield directly. However, periodic SAR image provided key to assess rice production. Transplanting date is estimated by using SAR image in relatively accurate level, which makes it possible to estimate rice production by combining a simulation model for rice growth and yield.

This study focused on changes in livelihood of rural Southeast Asia during the last several decades and tried to identify sustainable humanosphere there. The case studies were carried out at the mountainous and lowland areas in Southeast Asia. The major conclusions are 1) rural livelihood in Southeast Asia are affected by both rapidly-changing governance and market and comparatively stable social and family networks; 2) the major driver of change is the connection between rural livelihood and global governance and market; 3) the major strategy of rural people to establish sustainable humanosphere is livelihood diversification at the household and community levels; 4) people confront higher risks when they simplify livelihood and/or change the whole set of livelihood. These suggest that identifying the structure of livelihood and examining possibility and risks accompanied by livelihood transition are the major research agenda of sustainable humanosphere studies at the regional level.

This study attempted to develop a crop model for soybean that can be applied to predict crop performance under excess soil moisture condition. To a previously published model (Sinclair, 1986), a module of developmental stages was incorporated. For developing a module of crop response to excess water, two series of controlled experiments were conducted. One was for determination of N fixation response to waterlogging as affected by soil temperature and redox potential. Another was for leaf-growth response to excess water that revealed a common pattern of the leaf-growth response under varied temperature condition. The field experiments conducted on a field facilitated with the system for controlling underground water level and a data-set of crop responses in biomass and N accumulation and seed yield was developed. A preliminary model that accounts for reduction of leaf area development due to excess water was applied to the data from the field experiments.

The rainfed lowland is a major rice ecosystem in Thailand. In northeast Thailand, especially, rice plant experiences anaerobic, aerobic and drought conditions alternately during the life cycle and moreover soil capacity of nutrient supplies and retention is very low due to sandy soil. Therefore, rice yield is seriously reduced. Our objectives were to clarify the nutrient dynamics in soil and rice plants and to improve rice yield with improvement of nutrient absorption. As a result, phosphorus content in soil was not high and the deficiency was occurred. But, phosphorus fertilizer did not effective, because phosphorus is hardly moving in soil, and root growth was strongly reduced by anaerobic-aerobic transition, and the favorable nitrogen had to be accompanied. We could find out some lines showing relatively good growth under this rainfed condition. They are assumed to have the capacity to absorb phosphate effectively. It is necessary to be analyzed to improve rice productivity.

The factors for the growing yield gap between Japanese and US soybean production were analyzed in reference to meteorological resources, genetic potential of cultivars and development of crop management technologies. Meteorologically determined yield limit in USA was higher in USA than in Japan by higher solar radiation, while the trend of yield increase in USA was attributed to technological development. US cultivars showed consistently greater yield than Japanese ones and the difference was resulted from different dry matter productivity. The US cvs. exhibited high leaf stomatal conductance to gas exchange as compared to Japanese cvs. and this seemed a reason for the greater dry matter productivity in the US cvs.. Based on the field surveys, it was considered that the contribution of genetic improvement was relatively greater in the midwest region, which the contribution of crop management was greater in the midsouth and south regions.

The objectives were to evaluate the current climate variation effects on regional rice production in Monsoon Asia, and to predict the impact of anticipated global warming on rice yield in the region. The results from 4-year research may be summarized as follows : (1)Temperature increase in rice growth season was recognized in Western Japan where the minimum and maximum temperatures have rised by 1.5℃ and 1.0℃ from those in 1960's, which is giving negative effects on rice yield. (2)It was found that the yearly variation in rice yield in Monsoon Asia has changed to increasing trend around 1990 from the previous dereasing trend reflecting mainly the increasing yield fluctuation in India. The yield in India tended to be above the average in La Nina years and below that in El Nino years. Rice yields in India and China are variating in opposite directions each other. This implies that, once those two big rice production countries should have concurrent yield reduction due to adverse climates, it will give enormous impact on rice supply in Monsoon Asia. (3)A dynamic model was developed for simulation of doubling CO_2 climate effect on rice yield based on analysis of ecophysiological genotype-by-environmental interaction processes of rice growth. This model well explained growth and yield of different rice genotypes grown in widely different climatic regions in Monsoon Asia. The model predicts a global warming of more than 3℃ and doubling CO_2 concentration will reduce rice yields of most Monsoon Asia except north temperate areas, with more pronounced effects in Japonica type rice.
