<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>This article sheds light on the diversity of meanings and connotations that tend to be lost or hidden in translations between different conceptualizations of nature in East and South-East Asia. It reviews the idea of “nature” in Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Tagalog, Cebuano, Lumad, Indonesian, Burmese, Nepali, Khmer, and Mongolian. It shows that the conceptual subtleties in the conceptualization of nature often hide wider and deeper cosmological mismatches. It concludes by suggesting that these diverse voices need to be represented in global reports on sustainability, which can be fostered by the direct involvement of experts from diverse traditions of thought who have access and interpretative knowledge of sources in languages other than English. To take into consideration the diversity of conceptualizations of nature can lead to better decisions about sustainability and improve the acceptability and efficiency of environmental policies in each local context, as well as internationally. Solutions and policies on the ground must be designed based on the local conceptual and cultural frames.</jats:p>

Many different languages and disciplines are involved in Asian research on environmental conflicts. Linguistic diversity combined with the varied economic, legal, political and social contexts of the Asian continent gives birth to myriad debates about environmental crime and harm. Borders between disciplines are blurred and take different shapes depending on the linguistic and academic contexts. As a result of this situation, the many resources, knowledge and debates developed in various ‘bubbles’ hardly cross disciplinary and linguistic borders. With this special issue, we hope to contribute to unlocking doors and building bridges between the myriad Asian knowledge traditions about environmental conflict, crime and harm. Also, we aim to open the door for readers (be they scholars or practitioners) to engage with the debates and collaborate in addressing instances of environmental degradation in Asia. Finally, we want to remove the obstacles that separate the multi-disciplinary Asian scholars working on environmental crime from the green criminologists around the world.

By offering new fantasies, perspectives and representations, artists have the power to make people aware of social issues and inspire them to action. This paper describes how artists can offer a vision of environmental resistance by employing fantasy and using tools of poetic expression for communities affected by environmental destruction. This paper employs a case study methodology to examine the Minamata disease victims’ movement in Japan through the lens of environmental justice. As part of this movement, writer Michiko Ishimure created a fantasy called Mouhitotsu-no-konoyo, based in a mythical world and featuring the moral relationships that the people of Minamata, Kumamoto Prefecture, had embraced before modernisation. I will show the importance of this fantasy for the movement, analysing it from two perspectives: those of ningenteki-dori (the human principle) and the invisible fantasy about the mythical world. Ishimure’s fantasy offers a moral message to prevent further environmental harm.

本年度は、環境犯罪における修復的正義実践のケーススタディを行った。第一に、昨年度に水俣で収集したインタビュー調査記録を分析をすることで、水俣病患者の高齢化が進むなかで、次世代に被害者の声を伝える活動の意義を明らかにした。成果については、2021年6月のオンラインシンポジウムEnvironmental restorative justice: A new justice framework for preventingで報告した。また、同内容をもとに英語論文を作成し、The International Journal of Restorative Justiceに投稿し、現在は査読中である。第二に、水俣地域で活動する「本願の会」の活動のケーススタディを行い、環境犯罪における修復的正義における非言語的なコミュニケーション導入の可能性を提起するために、2021年6月のオンラインシンポジウムRestorative Justice Over Distance Virtual Symposiumで報告を行った。第三に、水俣病患者が語る「モノにも魂が宿る」というアニミズムの発想を、英語圏に伝えるための教育素材として宮崎駿の漫画「風の谷のナウシカ」を取り上げて分析を行った。成果については、Asian Criminological Society Conferenceで報告を行った。また、同内容をもとに英語論文を作成し、英語論文集へ投稿し、査読中である。以上の研究成果に加えて、英語圏での環境犯罪における修復的正義の研究状況を、日本の研究者コミュニティに還元するために、日本語論文「犯罪化か、修復的正義（restorative justice）か？環境問題における刑事司法の役割の再検討」を執筆し、『高橋則夫先生古稀祝賀論文集』の掲載論文として出版された。
