    Moral pride is a key component of virtue development. This study provides developmental insight into children's moral pride across cultures, and the potential for moral pride to underlie prosocial behavior. Participants included children and adolescents ages 6, 9, and 12 years from Canada (n = 186; 50% girls; ethnically diverse sample), Japan (n = 180; 48% girls), and a subsample from Italy (n = 86; 54% girls), as well as their primary caregivers or teachers. Moral pride was measured using a vignette procedure wherein children reported their emotions, emotion intensities, and reasoning following moral actions (harm omission and prosocial contexts). Global prosocial behavior was assessed via caregiver reports. Results revealed that moral pride increased from 6 to 9 years of age in Japanese and Canadian children (some similar trends were found in the Italian subsample) and that Canadian children reported stronger feelings of moral pride than Japanese children (Italian children's moral pride intensities were akin to those of Canadian children). Moral pride was positively associated with global prosocial behavior in Japanese children (and marginally in Italian children) but not in the Canadian children. These novel findings showcase the role of culture in shaping children's moral pride, and the potential for this moral emotion to reinforce children's commitment to prosocial action in childhood and early adolescence.     This paper examined through questionnaire surveys, the judgments of undergraduate students (n=246) with respect to conflicts between various human rights and common welfare issues. None of the participants had majored in law. They were presented with four cases that contained conflicts between several human rights. The participants who were presented with the 'moral' version of the questionnaire (n=141) were asked for their opinion on the preferable course of action, while the others were presented with the 'legal' version (n=105) and were asked: 'If you were a citizen judge, what would your thoughts be on this matter?' The participants' judgments did not differ greatly by gender, current major, high school electives in the social sciences, knowledge of legal terminologies, and self-declared experience with respect to human rights. There were no clear differences between the results obtained from the responses to the legal and moral versions. Several heuristics of the 'disregard for due process', 'undue focus on personalities', 'unilateral respects of gains', and 'labelling possibilities without any proof' were observed.

    A multidimensional scale for measuring empathy in elementary school children was developed and its reliability and validity investigated. Results indicated adequate internal consistency and temporal stability of the scale, suggesting it had good reliability. Correlations with Prosocial Behavior and Social Desirability Scales indicated sufficient validity of the scale. In addition, results of confirmatory factor analysis supported the Davis finding (1983) that empathy had four components. Development of empathy in elementary school children, as well as problems such as children's acquiescence set were also discussed.

    本稿は,日本のテレビ番組の内容分析によって現在のメディア状況を明らかにし,メディア・リテラシー教育に必要な情報を得ることを目的としている.米国のNational Television Violence Study(1996-1998)をもとにコード化マニュアルとコード票を作成し,2003年と2004年の2時点,各1週間の中からフィクション番組を抽出し,向社会的行為にかかわるキャラクターの特徴について内容分析を行った.その結果,向社会的行為実行者はあまり魅力的なキャラクターとして描写されておらず,観察学習の促進要因は乏しかった.また,おおむね女性よりも男性の描写数が多く,現実との乖離も示唆された.最後に,悪人キャラクター,善悪複合キャラクターに対する報酬はほとんどなかった.

    本稿は,日本のニュース番組の内容分析によって現在のメディア状況を明らかにし,メディア・リテラシー教育に必要な情報を得ることを目的としている.米国のNational Television Violence Study(1996-1998)をもとにコード化マニュアルとコード票を作成し,サンプル・ウィークから計54時間29分,57本のニュース番組を抽出して,その暴力および向社会的行為の描写の頻度と文脈を分析した.その結果,暴力描写は7割の番組で見られたが,行為への罰などその悪影響を抑える文脈も見られた.一方,向社会的行為描写は数が少なく,他のジャンルより行為の学習を促す文脈が少なかった.

    The goal of this research was to understand why younger children are less likely to affirm freedom of speech than are older children, adolescents or college students. In Study I, 4th, 6th, 8th, and llth graders, and college students (N=176) made judgments about the legitimacy of laws prohibiting freedom of speech. With age, participants' mode of reasoning changed from focusing on the contents of speech, to a balance between speech contents and freedom, and then to a focus on the rights of the listener. Differences in mode of reasoning were associated with levels of support for freedom of speech, even after controlling for grade level. Participants in Study n were 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and llth graders (N=127). With age, participants tended to recognize freedom of speech as a social value, to rate the influence of listeners as weak, and to rate contents of speech as not serious. The association between these ratings and levels of support for freedom of speech varied according to the domain of the speech contents.

    The purpose of our research is to clarify the cognitive process of acquiring skill or knowledge on laws and the process of expertise in legal reasoning. We focus on the psychological concept of “metacognition” to analyze the skill or knowledge on laws. We conducted interviews with some legal professions and the students who passed the bar exam on the legal reasoning and legal mind. Further, The residents in Osaka city was surveyed about legal reasoning in 2016. Also the experiment using scenarios on legal thinking was carried out in 2017. Finally we developed the studying methods of laws and conducted experiments on the studying methods and showed the process of acquiring skill and knowledge.

    This study examined moral emotion attribution in children, adolescents, and young adults. There were five primary results. First, although young children showed “happy victimizer” (positive outcome-oriented emotions) reactions, their judgments varied according to context. Second, children who understand mixed emotions might be sensitive to specific contexts when, for example, moral rules are recalled. Third, even adolescents display happy victimizer reactions when asked to attribute information to an excluder within a peer exclusion scenario. Fourth, there were very few “happy moralist” (positive self-evaluative emotions for acting morally) reactions in some situations. Finally, there are some relationships between moral emotion attribution and moral behavior. Even young children judge about exclusion using information provided by moral emotions. Moreover, children found it easier to make judgments about exclusion based on guilt rather than pride.

    In this study, we investigated the influence of international exchange via Social Networking Services (SNS) on reducing prejudices. In study 1, we conducted a four-wave Web-based longitudinal survey, and this showed that prejudice was reduced not only by direct contact interacting with foreign users via SNS but also by indirect contact through one’s friends interacting with foreigners. In study 2, we conducted an international exchange program via SNS, and evaluated its educational effects through experimentation. The results showed that one’s impression of foreigners improved more for the direct-contact and indirect-contact groups than for the control group and more for the direct-contact group than for the indirect-contact group. On the other hand, the prior acquisition of knowledge regarding interaction appeared to have no effect, and this suggests that sufficient effects may be achieved even with no preparation prior to the interaction.

    本研究は、小学校高学年を対象とした法教育の授業を企画し、その効果を検証し、さらにその成果を広く一般に知らしめるものである。企画および実施は、発達心理学者、教育学者、教育者、弁護士の協同により遂行された。2年間の研究により、(1)2種の法教育指導案を開発し、(2)児童に対する一定の効果が確認され、(3)3回のシンポジウム(うち1回は公開シンポジウム、およびウェブサイトでの概要公開も含む)が達成された。 研究1で開発した指導案は、民主主義の理解を子どもにもなじみのある「集団決定」の場面を用いて促進することを目的としたものであった。小学5年生を対象とした授業を行い、授業前後のテスト実施パラダイム(統制群を用意)を用いて授業の効果の検証を行った。効果検証用の質問紙も開発した。さらに、ビデオ録画と発話記録の作成を行い、授業自体の分析も行った。研究2で開発した指導案は、「配分的正義」に関するものであった。小学6年生を対象とした、継続的な授業(1クラスを固定し、9月、11月、2月の3回実施)を行い、継続的な取り組みによる子どもの変化を探った。どちらの指導案でも、児童に対する一定の効果が見られたが、特に研究1の「集団決定」の効果測定用の質問紙において、授業群の判断の理由づけの変化およびその維持が明確に見られた。

    This study investigated factors that determine tolerance towards others' having different opinions and discussed psychological meaning of tolerance. Experiments were conducted with infants, children, and young people. The results suggested that tolerance was a developmental process that is independent of development regarding the understanding of relativism. Moreover, results indicated that issues in the moral domain come to be valued with age. Furthermore, it was indicated that "tolerance towards others with different opinions" affected the expansion of interpersonal networks. Based on the above findings, the developmental meanings of tolerance are discussed and suggestions for the field of education are presented.

    The purposes of this research project were(a)to conduct content analysis and longitudinal surveys to find the contextual traits of violent portrayals which could affect children's aggressiveness from television programs and videogame software they were actually exposed to and(b)to develop the program of media literacy education concerning the contextual traits. As results of the analysis and surveys, how to portray injured victims was regarded as an influential contextual trait, and an educational program in which the portrayals of victims were used was made. The result of quasi-experiment conducted in a school showed that this program could deepen children's understanding of portrayals of victims.

    This article examined the development of tolerance in children and adolescents. The elementary school children, who typically demand others to conform to their in-groups, used moral principles when judge and accept others to their in-groups. The junior high school students are in the process of learning to judge others as they consider differences among others' characteristics. The university students are able to clearly distinguish and judge types of groups as well as characteristics of others. The tolerance to diversity among children and adolescents was associated with their interpersonal orientation towards groups and friends. The results of the study implied that an interaction with heterogeneous groups of people was likely to foster tolerance to diversity.
