Mesoporous silica shells were formed on nonporous spherical silica cores during the sol-gel reaction to elucidate the mechanism for the generation of secondary particles that disturb the efficient growth of mesoporous shells on the cores. Sodium bromide (NaBr) was used as a typical electrolyte for the sol-gel reaction to increase the ionic strength of the reactant solution, which effectively suppressed the generation of secondary particles during the reaction wherein a uniform mesoporous shell was formed on the spherical core. The number of secondary particles (N 2nd) generated at an ethanol/water weight ratio of 0.53 was plotted against the Debye-Hückel parameter κ to quantitatively understand the Debye screening effect on secondary particle generation. Parameter κa, where a is the average radius of the secondary particles finally obtained in the silica coating, expresses the trend in N 2nd at different concentrations of ammonia and NaBr. N 2nd was much lower than that expected theoretically from the variation of secondary particle sizes at a constant Debye-Hückel parameter. A similar correlation with κa was observed at the high and low ethanol/water weight ratios of 0.63 and 0.53, respectively, with different hydrolysis rate constants. The good correlation between N 2nd and κa revealed that controlling the ionic strength of the silica coating is an effective approach to suppress the generation of secondary particles for designing mesoporous shells with thicknesses appropriate for their application as high-performance liquid chromatography column packing materials.

Inspired by the structural coloration of anisotropic materials in nature, we demonstrate the preparation of structural color materials by the assembly of anisotropic particles. Spherical artificial melanin particles consisting of a polystyrene core and polydopamine shell were stretched asymmetrically to form uniform-sized ellipsoidal particles with different aspect ratios. The aspect ratio and assembly method of the ellipsoidal particles influence the structural coloration, indicating that the particle shape is one of the important parameters for controlling the structural coloration. The discovery of a method to control the structural color using ellipsoidal particles is useful in basic research on structural colors in nature and provides flexibility in material design and extends the application range of structural color materials.

Two different approaches were conducted to obtain plasmonic nanoparticles periodically arranged with an appropriate distance apart. The first approach is a co-assembling of two types of particles with different materials and sizes. The second one is the use of core-shell structure of composite particles incorporating the plasmonic nanoparticles separated with the shell. For the plasmonic nanoparticles that have a high sedimentation velocity in suspension, it was indicated that the second approach is useful for three-dimensionally ordered plasmonic nanoparticles to exhibit intrinsically optical properties.

The objective of the present work is development of nanomaterials usable for imaging specific parts of organisms. Several types of monodisperse yolk/shell particles, which are composed of a movable inner core and outer silica shell, were synthesized to prepare colloidal crystals applicable to the imaging. The yolk/shell structure is found to allow inner metal cores to exhibit intrinsic optical properties and also show the Raman signals even when the yolk/shell particles are assembled in a limited space.

A fabrication process in which spherical titania particles with a photocatalytic surface exposed were incorporated into hollow interiors of inverse opals (IO) was examined. The incorporation of spherical titania particles into IO was performed by a combination of filling interstices of polymer-coated titania particles with silica precursors and sintering the assembly of polymer-coated titania particles. Decomposition of methylene blue (MB), which is a typical method to characterize photocatalytic activity instead of water splitting reaction, was used to examine the catalytic activity of IO fabricated in the present work. The MB decomposition revealed that the spherical titania particles incorporated into the hollow interior of IO could exhibit a photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation with an assistance of connection holes formed between hollow interiors.

The field strength in surface enhanced Raman scattering between plasmonic nanoparticles strongly depends on distances between the nanoparticles. Precise control over dispersion-aggregation of particles in a suspension is required to apply the intrinsic surface properties of particles to functional devices. Since unstable particles in a suspension generally aggregate to form large aggregates, it is very difficult to handle aggregates composed of a small number of particles. In the present work where hollow type colloidal crystals incorporating movable cores were fabricated, direct observations of the movable core with an optical microscope experimentally proved that the distance between particles incorporated in the colloidal crystal could be reversibly controlled by application of external field such as AC electric field.

In fabrication of colloidal crystals, where spherical particles have been regularly assembled as building blocks, assemblies of anisotropic particles are also highly required. The present study proposed a novel method to fabricate the assemblies of anisotropic particles. The proposed method consists of preparation of anisotropic particles in spherical hollow particles and self-assembling of the hollow particles containing the anisotropic particles. An interesting feature is that the anisotropic particles can be freely moved in the confinement of spherical shell, which expects control over positions of anisotropic particles in the confinement by external fields.

Assemblies of anisotropically shaped composite particles under the external fields were observed with an optical microscope. The anisotropy in shapes of composite particles caused new structures of particle assemblies. Anisotropically shaped composite particles were prepared in wet chemical processes for creating new types of colloidal crystals. The preparation of anisotropic composite particles were performed by incorporating inorganic components into polymers that are main components of composite particles. The inorganic components incorporated were used as materials responsive to external fields such as electric and magnetic fields. Localization of the inorganic components in the composite particles could assemble the composite particles with their directed orientation. Hollow particles incorporating a movable core could be a new type of building block to create non-close packed colloidal crystals responsive to external fields.

Environmentally adaptable synthetic processes were studied for polymer particles with low polydispersity. The synthetic processes that use water as a solvent could prepare monodisperse particles in a wide size range from 50 nm to several micron meters. Since neither polymer dispersant nor a large amount of surfactants was added to the synthetic system, surfaces of polymer particles obtained in the process were highly pure. The pure surfaces of polymer particles can be advantages when the polymer particles are used as components for functional composite particles.

Monodisperse polymer composite particles homogeneously incorporating different inorganic nanoparticles were successfully prepared with soap-free emulsion polymerization that has been used for pure polymer particles. To prepare the composite particles, inorganic nanoparticles were continuously supplied to the polymerization system in the presence of growing polymer particles whose surface charge density was electrostatically controlled. This result showed that the soap-free emulsion polymerization could be applied to the preparation of polymer composite particles with low polydispersity.
