Profile

I'm working on structural condensed matter physics. Origins of various properties of materials are examined from atomic arrangements, which are clarified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. This approach to the condensed matter physics provides a bridging viewpoint between microscopic phenomena and macroscopic properties. I've studied various transition metal oxides, organic semiconductors, alloys, f-electron systems in the forms of single crystals, epitaxial films, or interfaces. Technically, I'm interested in superlattice reflections, diffuse scatterings, and surface scatterings. 

Condensed matter physics based on structural information, this is what I'm interested in.

    Abstract Time-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism under the effects of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), known as X-ray ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR) measurements, enables direct detection of precession dynamics of magnetic moment. Here we demonstrated XFMR measurements and Bayesian analyses as a quantitative probe for the precession of spin and orbital magnetic moments under the FMR effect. Magnetization precessions in two different Pt/Ni-Fe thin film samples were directly detected. Furthermore, the ratio of dynamical spin and orbital magnetic moments was evaluated quantitatively by Bayesian analyses for XFMR energy spectra around the Ni $$L_{2,3}$$ absorption edges. Our study paves the way for a microscopic investigation of the contribution of the orbital magnetic moment to magnetization dynamics.

    Abstract Ladder systems situated in the dimensional crossover region have attracted much attention because their electronic states and physical properties depend strongly on the electronic correlations among the constituent legs. Generally, two‐/three‐legged transition metal‐oxide ladder compounds are studied as representative ladder systems, but two‐/three‐dimensional (2D/3D) extensions based on such ladder systems with a few numbers of legs are difficult because of the extreme synthesis conditions. Here, for the first time, we report the successful creation of a 3D extended two‐legged ladder compound, [Pt(en)(dpye)I]2(NO3)4 ⋅ 2H2O (en=ethylenediamine; dpye=1,2‐Di(4‐pyridyl)ethane), which is obtained by simple oxidative polymerization of a small Pt macrocyclic complex using elemental I2. The unique 3D extended lattice consists of 1D mixed‐valence halogen‐bridged metal chains (⋅⋅⋅Pt−I−Pt−I⋅⋅⋅) and helically arranged macrocyclic units as the constituent legs and rungs, as confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Diffuse X‐ray scattering analyses and optical measurements revealed that the out‐of‐phase mixed‐valence Pt2+/Pt4+ arrangement arises from the weak interchain correlation among adjacent legs. In addition, this compound shows an increase in proton conductivity by a factor of up to 1000, depending on humidity.

    The term "multiferroics" was originally coined for materials in which multiple ferroic orders, such as ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and ferroelastic orders, coexist simultaneously. In recent years, some classes of multiferroics where magnetic and ferroelectric orders coexist have been attracting much attention from both fundamental and technological points of view because the coupling between these two ferroic orders produces intriguing magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric phenomena. Here, we focus on a rare-earth zircon, DyVO4, which exhibits distinct magnetodielectric phenomena owing to another type of ferroic coupling. This compound combines two ferroic orders: "antiferroelectric order" and "quadrupolar order". We discuss the effect of quadrupolar order (Jahn-Teller effect) on magnetic and dielectric properties in DyVO4 in which the quadrupolar order of Dy 4f electrons induces the antiferroelectric order related to lattice distortion aroung V sites.

Knowledge of the surface structure of strongly correlated electron systems is needed for nano-science and device application of such systems.     Synchrotron X-ray high-resolution measurements have been performed to investigate the nature of the insulating state of a quarter-filled quasi-one-dimensional conductor (DI-DCNQI) 2Ag and the π-d interacted conductor (DBr-DCNQI) 2Cu. The two-fold structure in the ground state of (DI-DCNQI) 2Ag system consists of not only charge ordering columns but also monotonic charge dimerized columns caused by frustration among DCNQI columns. On the other hand, Cu salt in the insulating phase realizes a commensurate structure where the Cu charge ordering is coupled with the 3c-CDW in the insulator phase.     RMn2 O5 (R = Y and rare earth) shows successive magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions at about 45, 40, 39, 20 and 10 K. We have reinvestigated the magnetic structure of YMn2 O5 at the commensurate phase (T = 25 K) using a single crystal four-circle diffractometer in order to discuss the mechanism of magnetoelectric interaction and the origin of ferroelectricity. We also observed the lattice modulation vectors (qL) to compare the magnetic propagation vectors (qM) by synchrotron X-ray diffraction.     We have investigated the field-induced coexistent phase of antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) and antiferromagnetic order in TbB2 C2 by resonant X-ray scattering.     Gd substitution in DyB2C2 enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction and weakens the antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) interaction. In Dy0.8Gd0.2B2C2, two successive transitions occur. By performing resonant X-ray scattering measurements, we confirmed the AFQ ordering temperature TQ=18.0K and the N?el temperature TN=19.5K; TN is higher than TQ in Dy 0.8Gd0.2B2C2, in contrast to DyB2C2. There exists an AFM phase between TQ and TN, and the magnetic structure is described by k=[100].     We have performed resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering on GdB6 to investigate the two successive phase transitions at TN=?15K and T*=?10K. Below TN, new superlattice reflection at the wave vector [141412], which is the same wave vector determined by the epithermal neutron diffraction, has been observed by X-ray scattering. In the temperature region between T* and TN, it was confirmed by the polarization analyses that the superlattice reflection is due to magnetic X-ray scattering. On the other hand, interestingly, the superlattice reflection below T* is mainly due to Thomson scattering. Unlike behavior expected from usual magnetoelastic effects, the wave vector of the lattice distortion is identical to that of the magnetic structure below T*. ? 2005 Elsevier B.V.     We have investigated the antiferromagnetic ground state, phase IV, of TbB2C2 by resonant X-ray scattering to study the background of its anomalous magnetic structure. Polarization analysis was carried out to clarify the origin of the superlattice and forbidden reflections that appear below the N?el temperature. We observed magnetic reflections of (1 0 0.5) and (0 0 0.5), consistently with the neutron diffraction experiment by Kaneko et al. In addition, we have detected the (1 0 0) forbidden reflection in the unrotated σ-σ′ channel, which was not observed by neutron diffraction. From the detailed analysis of the resonant X-ray scattering, we conclude that this reflection originates from the ordering of the quadrupolar moment that accompany the canted antiferromagnetic structure of TbB2C2 because of the strong spin-orbit coupling.     Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) experiment has been performed for the (3 0 1.5) superlattice reflection in the antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic phase of DyB2C2. Azimuthal-angle dependence of the resonance enhanced intensities for both dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) resonant processes has been measured precisely with polarization analysis. Every scattering channel exhibits distinctive azimuthal dependence, differently from the symmetric reflection at (0 0 0.5) which was studied previously. We have analyzed the results using a theory developed by Lovesey et al. [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 8 (1996) 10983], which directly connects atomic tensors with the cross-section of RXS. The fitting results indicate that the azimuthal dependences can be explained well by the atomic tensors up to rank 2. Rank 4 tensor is not reflected in the RXS data. In addition, the coupling scheme among the 4f quadrupolar moment, 5d ortital, and the lattice has been determined from the interference among the Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings of E1 and E2 processes. It has also been established from the RXS of the (3 0 1.5) reflection that the canting of the 4f quadrupolar moments exists up to TQ. We also discuss a possible wavefunction of the ground state and the existence of the rank 4 moment. ?2005 The Physical Society of Japan.

    Experimental evidence of the d-f Coulomb interaction responsible for the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) from antiferroquadrupolar order in DyB 2C 2 is presented. The energy dependences of the RXS intensity with polarization analysis are analyzed by considering the interference between the resonances of dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) transition processes. It is found that the structure factors for the E1 and E2 processes have the same sign for σ-π′ but the opposite sign for σ-σ′ channel. This result, when compared to the calculated structure factors, means that the quadrupolar moments of the 4f and 5d shells have opposite signs to each other. Interference between nonresonant Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and resonant scatterings is also studied, revealing the relation between the displacements of the B and C atoms and the charge distributions of the 4f and 5d shells. ?2005 The American Physical Society.

    X-ray magnetic scattering experiment has been performed on the antiferromagnetic order in GdAs. The superlattice reflections with 〈1/21/21/2〉-type propagation vector appear below TN. The energy spectra around the L3 absorption edge of Gd exhibit asymmetric interference structures. From the analysis of the spectrum, with the knowledge of the magnetic structure, it is estimated that the 5d spins are oppositely polarized to the 4f moment.     We investigated the origin of the energy splitting observed in the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) in manganites. Using thin film samples with controlled lattice parameters and orbital states at a fixed orbital filling, we estimated that the contribution of the interatomic Coulomb interaction relative to the Jahn-Teller mechanism is insignificant and at most 0.27.     Charge and orbital ordering behaviors in the half doped bi-layered compound LaSr2Mn2O7 have been studied by resonant and non-resonant x-ray scattering. Three different order parameters, which correspond to the A-type antiferromagnetism, charge ordering and orbital ordering, were observed by measuring the magnetostriction and the superlattice peaks characterized by wavevectors (1/2 1/2 0) and (1/4 1/4 0), respectively. The superlattice reflections indicating the charge and orbital ordered states were observed below 210 K. Both the intensities reach a maximum at 160 K on cooling and become very weak below 100 K. The peak width of the charge ordered state agrees with that of the orbital ordered state at all temperatures studied. These results indicate that both the states originate from a single phase and that the charge/orbital ordered islands with definite interfaces disperse in the A-type antiferromagnetic phase. The dimensionality of the charge/orbital ordered phase is discussed using this model. ?2003 The Physical Society of Japan.

    Resonant X-ray scattering study was carried out to investigate an anomalous ordered state (TA = 6.5 K.) in the filled skutterudite PrFe4P12. At the Pr-LIII absorption edge, we observed resonant features in h + k + l = odd reflections, which are forbidden in the BCC structure above TA. Because these reflections contain the difference of anomalous scattering factor between two Pr atoms in the BCC unit cell, and the ordered state is attributed to the ordering of two different electronic states of Pr. ? 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.     We report the results of resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) measurement of superlattices which consist of La0.45Sr0.55MnO3 and La0.60Sr0.40MnO3 multilayers. An interference technique made it possible to observe RXS reflections from ferro-type orbital ordering in the superlattices. RXS can reveal the local circumstances around specific atoms in materials regulated atomically. In this experiment, we observed that the superlattice is actually composed of two kinds of layers with different lattice distortion states, presenting &quot;orbital superlattices&quot;, in which layers with different orbital states are stacked alternately in an atomic scale. ?2003 The Physical Society of Japan.

    The low-temperature (LT) superstructure of NaV2O5 was determined by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction. Below the phase transition temperature at 34 K, the LT structure is monoclinic. It was determined that the LT structure is (a - b) × 2b × 4c with the space group A112, where a, b and c represent the high-temperature orthorhombic unit cell.     Resonant X-ray scattering experiments have been performed on perovskite manganite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 thin films, which are grown on three distinct perovskite substrates with a coherent epitaxial strain and have a forced ferro-type orbital ordering of Mn 3d orbitals. Using an interference technique, we have successfully observed the resonant X-ray scattering signal from the system having the ferro-type orbital ordering and also revealed the energy scheme of Mn 4p bands. For the forced ferro-type orbital ordering system, the present results evidence that the resonant X-ray scattering signal originates from the band structure effect due to the Jahn-Teller distortion of a MnO6 octahedron, and not from the Coulomb interaction between 3d and 4p electrons. ? 2003 The Physical Society of Japan.

    The charge and orbital ordered states in the single-layered manganite crystals, Nd1-xSr1-xMnO4 (x = 0.67, 0.75), have been investigated. We have observed the superlattice spots with modulation wave vector, q = (δ, δ, 0), δ = 1/8, 1/4 [?1/6,1/3] in x = 0.75[0.67] by resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering.     Small-angle and wide angle X-ray scattering studies were carried out on polymer thin films containing microcrystalline behenic acid. Measurements were made on samples in various optical states prepared by appropriate heat treatment. The results were consistent with the picture which presupposes the existence of voids around the crystallites when the composite film is in the opaque state. It was found that, upon cooling, molten behenic acid crystallizes in B or E polymorph, but not in C polymorph. It was concluded that the crystallization temperature for the C form is very low for small particles (0.2-2 μm) so that the molten BA, upon cooling, becomes unstable due to the formation of the crystalline state of the B form at a temperature above the crystallization temperature of the C-form.

    In order to improve the safety of rechargeable batteries, water-based rechargeable batteries using an aqueous solution as an electrolyte have been investigated, but the problem is that the potential range for stable operation is known to be narrow. In this study, we used the addition of organic sulfonates to elucidate the expansion of the potential window of aqueous electrolytes and the mechanism of their expression. An enlarged potential window was found for multiple organic sulfonates, confirming that this is a universal phenomenon. The present findings provide a new perspective that the degradation resistance of aqueous solutions can be improved by controlling the local ion concentration and structure near the electrode, which is beneficial from the viewpoint of device applications.

    In order to spread the advanced Japanese science and technology based on the 3D-active-site science to the world, we actively promoted the appeal of achievement results through organizing the international workshop and the publications of English textbooks and special issues in international journals. We supported our young researchers actively collaborating abroad for a long term and inviting overseas researchers to our groups. We promoted the foundation of overseas researcher community with a deep understanding of the concept and significance of this field. As a result, a joint research network based on large-scale advanced synchrotron radiation facilities and overseas research institutes was established.

    By preparing a high-level experimental environment, and supporting application and analysis of synchrotron research, we activated the research and collaboration among members. By conducting many results briefing sessions, symposia, outreach activities, site visits, etc., we enhanced mutual understanding and many collaborations in fusion area. Our advanced knowledge was spread to the world through the special issue of English magazines and the publication of Japanese and English textbooks. We have fostered many young scientists by giving spring school and poster awards and subsidizing travel expenses for international conferences. These were widely spread through the issuance of Japanese and English domain homepages and News Letter. As a result, we were able to create the science of atomic arrangement around isolated active atoms, which is important for the functional advanced materials in Japan.

    There are various phenomena activated by the surfaces or interfaces. We have studied surface or interface structures by means of the crystal truncation rod (CTR) scattering method, one of the surface diffraction techniques. Technical improvement for the static structure we achieved allowed us to examine the surface/interface structures of various organic semiconductors and oxides. Time resolved instruments were also developed, 100 ps resolution reflection high energy electron diffraction streak camera and 100 ms resolution simultaneous multiple angle-wavelength dispersive X-ray reflectometer. Using them, we have clarified the reaction mechanisms of TiO2 opto-catalytic reaction and fuel-cell reactions at the Pt surface.

    In order to understand the process of external control of magnetic/transport properties of materials, we have performed non-contact measurements of interfacial structures of various functional materials. Cobalt ultrathin films, which vary their Curie temperature by applied electric voltage, shows no structural change caused by the voltage. In contrast, the self assembled monolayers on electrode changes their conformation. Such structural switching caused by the external voltage is used for the control of the work function of the electrode with respect to the HOMO level of the organic semiconductor to reduce the contact resistivity. In the course of this study, we have developed a new method of the surface structure analysis based on the informatics, which helps future studies a lot.

    The purpose of this study was to construct new coupled electronic properties related to magnetism with low energy loss in magnetic insulators. In particular, we focused on magnetoelectric phenomena such as electric-field control of magnetism. The followings are examples of the achievements: (1) non-volatile electric-field control of magnetism at room temperature in magnetoelectric hexaferrites, (2) construction of a new glass state called “toroidal glass” and its demonstration through magnetoelectric effect, (3) construction of enantiomerism for electric quadrupole order, and (4) enhancement of magnetically-induced electric polarization by applying high pressure.

    Current technology to fabricate electronic devices is based on Si. However, recent study revealed that organic semiconductors can be utilized for making devices with totally different characteristics, such as lightweight, flexible devices. In this study, we performed structural study of interfaces to improve organic devices. High resolution, non-destructive measurements of interfaces were realized by using surface synchrotron X-ray diffraction technique. We clarified two interface structures; one is the surface structure of organic semiconductor tetracene, and the other is the electric double layer structure made of ionic liquid. The latter includes applied electric voltage dependence of the structure. Layered arrangement of the anions/cations was observed, and the ionic arrangement was controlled by the applied voltage.

    We have succeeded in developing various new multiferroics and magnetoelectric coupled phenomena. Among these achievements, one of the most striking results is the discovery of a low-field magnetoelectric effect at room temperature in a Z-type hexaferrite. We firstly demonstrate the magnetic control of ferroelectric polarization up to about 400 Kelvin.

    The research program “Frustration and Relaxors” is one of the research projects of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas “Novel States of Matter Induced by Frustration”. We developed new relaxor materials including lead-free ferroelectrics, clarified wide time-space structure in relaxor ferroelectrics, and proposed a minimal model for describing the range from the relaxor to the ferroelectrics. Therefore, our research made an important contribution to the basic research in relaxor systems and provided a new viewpoint to the conventional research field in frustrated systems.

    エピタキシャル人工格子とX線共鳴磁気散乱を組み合わせた回折実験をもちいて、スピンホール効果に伴うスピン蓄積の直接観測を目指した。21年度には、エピタキシャル人工格子としてPtと絶縁材料の組み合わせで良好な膜成長が得られる材料探索と,成長条件の最適化をおこない、MgO(001)基板上に良質なPt/γ-Al_2O_3(001)の組み合わせがエピタキシャルに成長することを見出した。当該年度は高輝度光科学研究センターBL39XUにおいて、X線共鳴磁気散乱による回折実験を行った。PtおよびAl_2O_3の設計膜厚は、それぞれ5nm、1nmとし、これを30周期分積層した。この薄膜を幅約1mm長さ、0.5mmに加工し、電流を印加した。室温においてPtのL_<II>共鳴端E=11.56keVの円偏光を入射し、同時にf=1kHz、振幅3Aの交流電流を印加し、PINフォトダイオードをディテクタに用いて実験を行った。回折条件を1次の超格子反射(n=1)に合わせて、fおよび2fのロックイン検波を行った。I_<AC>=3Aの超格子反射の強度は非常に弱く、AC信号/DC信号比が10^<-6>であった。12時間積分したが、電流により誘起されたスピン蓄積に対応する信号は、有意な大きさではなかった。期待された結果が得られなかった理由として、印加電流が小さく電流密度を稼げなかったことと、本質的に今回用いたPtのLII付近のX線は、その侵入長が非常に長く、薄膜試料では入射光のほとんどすべてが膜と相互作用することなく透過してしまうことが挙げられる。

    The atomic scale structures of manganese oxide thin films have been studied by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction. While the main target of our study was the film exhibiting a photo-induced metal-insulator switching, the sample was too unstable to obtain reliable results. Instead, the technique of the structure determination of film system was improved and the difference in metallic and insulating films has been clarified.
