    In this study, Fe-Cr based fluxes were investigated for the solution growth of AlN single crystals due to the high nitrogen solubility. Thermodynamic calculations demonstrated that the addition of Cr contributed to achieving a higher nitrogen content in Fe-Cr flux, which was expected to improve the AlN growth rate. However, it was found that the growth rate of AlN and the Cr content in the flux were not simply positively correlated. To explain this phenomenon, a mechanism based on the effective nitrogen content in flux was proposed. By further utilizing this mechanism, the Fe-26 mass% Cr (Fe-26Cr) alloy was designed as a flux and the optimal growth temperature was estimated, and then experimentally validated. Using Fe-26Cr flux, the growth rate of AlN reached 48 μm/h at 1675 °C. The full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the X-ray rocking curves (XRCs) for the (0002) and (10−12) reflections in grown AlN single crystals were 72 and 90 arcsec, respectively. Furthermore, the introduction of 2 mass% Al into flux (Fe-26Cr-2Al flux) resulted in a reduction of the O impurity concentrations in the grown AlN crystals by approximately 70 % compared to the AlN synthesized without additional Al.

    TiC-reinforced Mo–Si–B alloys (designated as MoSiBTiC alloys) exhibit great potential for application in the aerospace industry, due to their high melting point, moderate density and attractive high-temperature strength and creep resistance. Nevertheless, further material design and industrialization requires more systematic understanding of the phase diagram and solidification paths of Mo–Mo5SiB2–TiC pseudo-ternary system. In this study, an advanced ultra-high temperature thermal analysis method employing blackbody radiation and an electromagnetic levitation technique for in situ observation of the solidification process, were utilized to experimentally investigate the solidification process and reaction temperature of alloys in the vicinity of the Mo–Mo5SiB2–TiC ternary eutectic point. On the basis of the experimental results, three vertical sections of phase diagram at 9 mol% Mo5SiB2, 10 mol% TiC, and 70 mol% Moss isopleths in the Mo–Mo5SiB2–TiC pseudo-ternary system were established. The liquidus surface projection on the Mo–Mo5SiB2–TiC system has also been reconstructed, with the addition of a new Mo2B primary phase region and a larger Mo5SiB2 primary phase region than previously reported.

    This study aimed to accurately measure the density (ρ), normal spectral emissivity (ε), heat capacity at constant pressure (C p ), and thermal conductivity (κ) of the Ti–6 mass % Al–4 mass % V (Ti64) melt by electromagnetic levitation with a static magnetic field and laser modulation calorimetry. A static magnetic field was applied to the levitated Ti64 melt to suppress the surface oscillation and translational motion of the droplets, and to suppress the convection flow inside the droplet for each property measurement, as needed. The measurement uncertainty was analyzed for all of the thermophysical property data. The excess volume and excess heat capacity of the Ti64 melt obtained in this study were compared with those evaluated using the ideal solution model. The contribution of the thermal vibrations of the atoms in κ for the Ti64 melt was evaluated from the difference between the measured thermal conductivity (κ) value and the κ values calculated using the Wiedemann–Franz law.

    The solution growth method is an economical and environmentally friendly approach to producing aluminum nitride (AlN) single crystals. However, the fluxes used in the solution growth method have low nitrogen solubility, which limits the growth rate of AlN. In this study, as part of the development of a solution growth method for AlN using Fe-Cr fluxes with high nitrogen solubility, experiments were conducted using type 430 ferritic stainless steel, which is composed mainly of Fe-Cr, as the flux. Through a series of experiments, we report the results of the optimization of various experimental growth parameters (AlN polarity, cooling rate, and growth temperature). Furthermore, a growth mechanism based on the Al:N ratio in the flux is proposed, introducing the concept of effective nitrogen content to explain how the growth temperature affects the AlN growth rate using Fe-Cr flux. © 2024 The Authors.     Multilayer Fe3O4-doped indium saving indium-tin oxide (ITO) thin films were fabricated by sputtering method. Double-layered Fe3O4-doped indium saving indium-tin oxide (ITO) thin films consisted of 12 nm layer of conventional indium tin oxide (90 mass% In2O3 and 10 mass% SnO2) and 138 nm layer of indium saving indium-tin oxide (50 mass% In2O3, 50 mass% SnO2 and Fe3O4-doped) were grown on preheated at 523 K glass substrates. Obtained polycrystalline ITO thin films exhibit volume resistivity of 416 µΩcm, electron mobility 28 cm2/V·s, carrier density 5.3 × 1020 cm−3 and average optical transmittance above 85% in visible range of spectrum. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    The present work focuses on gaining a systematic understanding of the microstructure variation and solidification reactions of alloys in the Mo-rich portion of the Mo–Mo5SiB2(T2)–TiC pseudo-ternary system. A series of MoSiBTiC alloys with 9 mol% T2 were selected from the vicinity of the Mo–TiC binary and Mo–Mo5SiB2(T2)–TiC ternary eutectic point to carefully examine the solidification pathway and phase diagram. The solidification reaction temperature of the alloys was detected via an ultra-high-temperature thermal analysis method using blackbody radiation. Solidification was observed in situ using an electromagnetic levitation (EML) apparatus, and the microstructure evolution of solidified EML samples under different thermal histories was characterized. The results provide an experimentally based reassessment of the liquidus surface projection. The primary Moss phase region is shown to be larger than indicated in previously reported data, and a Mo2B primary region should exist in the triangle. As the main result of the investigation of the solidification pathway of a series of MoSiBTiC alloys, an isopleth phase diagram with 9 mol.% T2 in Mo–Mo5SiB2(T2)–TiC pseudo-ternary system is presented.

    In present work the properties of iron-doped indium tin oxide (ITO) films with reduced to 50 mass% indium oxide content prepared by co-sputtering of ITO and Fe2O3 targets and ITO and Fe3O4 targets in mixed argon–oxygen atmosphere were studied by various methods. The influence of different working gas flow rates, RF power of iron oxide targets, type of doping oxide and heat treatment temperatures on the electrical, optical, structural, and morphological properties of the films was characterized by means of four-point probe method, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    We propose a new AlN crystal growth method using Fe-based fluxes. AlN single crystals with a thickness of 67–212 µm were epitaxially grown on an AlN bulk substrate by a solution growth method using type 430 ferritic stainless steel flux. The full width at half maximum values of the x-ray rocking curves of (0002) and (10–12) of the synthesized AlN were 137 and 83 arcsec, respectively. The impurity concentrations of carbon were significantly decreased from 3 × 1019 atoms/cm3 in seed crystal to 6 × 1017 atoms/cm3 in synthesized crystal. The features of the method developed in this study are described as follows: (1) steel-based alloys are used as a flux, which are readily available and low-cost; (2) the growth temperature is 1700 °C, which is much lower than that of the sublimation method; (3) no high-pressure vessel is required because growth can be performed under 1 atmospheric pressure conditions; and (4) waste gas detoxification equipment is not required because only N2 gas is used and no toxic or flammable gases are used. Because of the above features (1) through (4), this is an effective crystal growth process from the perspective of ensuring the economics and safety of the facility.

Iron doping resulted in increasing optical transmittance of ITO thin films. It has been found that films sputtered onto preheated substrites under optimum conditions showed values of volume resistivity 1480 µΩcm that is much lower than that of ITO50:Fe3O4 films sputtered onto unheated substrates and average optical transmittance in the visible range over 85%. It has been revealed that iron-doped ITO thin films deposited under optimum conditions have low root mean square height (Sq) 0.67 nm and arithmetical mean height (Sa) 0.52 nm.

    We present the design, simulation, and characterization of a magnetic shape-memory alloy (MSMA) film actuator that transitions from bistable switching to resonant self-actuation when subjected to a stationary heat source. The actuator design comprises two Ni-Mn-Ga films of 10 µm thickness integrated at the front on either side of an elastic cantilever that moves freely between two heatable miniature permanent magnets and, thus, forms a bistable microswitch. Switching between the two states is induced by selectively heating the MSMA films above their Curie temperature Tc. When continuously heating the permanent magnets above Tc, the MSMA film actuator exhibits an oscillatory motion in between the magnets with large oscillation stroke in the frequency range of 50–60 Hz due to resonant self-actuation. A lumped-element model (LEM) is introduced to describe the coupled thermo-magnetic and magneto-mechanical performance of the actuator. We demonstrate that this performance can be used for the thermomagnetic energy generation of low-grade waste heat (T < 150 °C) with a high power output per footprint in the order of 2.3 µW/cm2.

    Multilayer aluminum-doped indium saving indium-tin oxide (ITO) thin films with low volume resistivity and high transmittance in the visible spectrum have been designed and fabricated by sputtering method. Double-layered structures consisting of very thin layer of conventional indium tin oxide (In2O3-10 mass % SnO2) and aluminum-doped indium saving indium-tin oxide layer with reduced to 50 mass % In2O3 content are discussed. Multilayer aluminum-doped ITO were deposited on glass substrates preheated at 523 K. Thin films deposited in pure argon demonstrate volume resistivity of 445 µΩcm, mobility of 26 cm2/V·s, carrier concentration of 5.6 × 1020 cm−3 and average transmittance larger than 85% in the visible range. Introducing oxygen to sputtering gas allowed increasing average transmittance of as-deposited multilayer aluminum-doped indium saving ITO thin films over 90% in the visible range. As-deposited multilayer aluminum-doped ITO thin films showed significantly higher transmittance in comparison with undoped ML ITO50/ITO90 and crystallized in In4Sn3O12 structure.

    This study is part of a series of studies aimed at measuring the thermophysical properties of molten phase change material-type metallic thermal energy storage materials near 873 K (600°C). The target material is Al–Si based alloys. First, as a feasibility study, density measurements of the molten state of three Al–Si binary alloys (Al–12.2Si, Al–50Si and Al–90Si in atomic%) were performed. A highly accurate non-contact density measurement method based on the static magnetic field superposition electromagnetic levitation (EML) method was employed as the density measurement method. The validity of this experimental method was confirmed, and density of molten Al–Si base alloys (ADC12 and Al–5.9mass%Si–1.6mass%Fe) were measured as a function of temperature with an expanded uncertainty of 1.2%. In addition, the surface tension of the alloys was measured by the droplet oscillation method using the EML technique. The surface tension was successfully obtained as a function of temperature with expanded uncertainty of 2.3%.

    The applicability of the dual-wavelength reflectance-ratio (DWR) method to emissivity-free radiation thermometry of electromagnetically levitated high-temperature liquid metals was investigated. To establish the measurement technique, the DWR method was applied to liquid Ni levitated in a static magnetic field, which suppresses the surface oscillation and the translational motion. In a previous study, temperature of the levitated liquid metals measured by DWR showed deviations of about 95 K to 175 K from the temperature measured by a calibrated pyrometer. Since this discrepancy could be attributed to the imperfect contribution of the auxiliary light, the effect of the optical setup of the auxiliary light on the temperature measurement was investigated in this study. By using a reflecting collimator for the auxiliary optical system and adopting the radiance ratio determined considering the geometrical arrangement of the measurement system, the difference between temperature of liquid Ni kept near its melting temperature (𝑇𝑚 = 1728 K) measured using DWR and the temperature measured by a pyrometer calibrated using the melting point of Ni was 12 K on average and the standard deviation in the temperature measurement was 25 K (𝑛 = 5).

    Abstract This article describes a preliminary study verifying the applicability of the dual-wavelength reflectance-ratio (DWR) method to emissivity-free radiation thermometry for electromagnetically levitated high-temperature liquid metals. To establish the measurement technique, the DWR method was applied to inductively heated solid spherical Cu and Ni samples. Regardless of the differences in the sample emissivity values, the temperature determined using the DWR method agreed within 20 K with the temperature determined using a thermocouple. It was found that the temperatures of metallic samples having different emissivity values can be determined with a standard uncertainty of 8 K in terms of the absolute temperature when applying the DWR method, even if the sample has curvature and is exposed to high temperatures of up to 1250 K.

    In the process of downsizing and/or energy saving of actuators and devices, the application of functional materials has attracted attention in addition to the optimizing of design and system. Functional materials are the materials that have some additional responsiveness to electricity, magnetic field, light ,heat, etc. in addition to the function of the structural material. Shape memory materials are the materials that memorize a certain shape and returns to the original shape under certain conditions after deformation. In recent years, new shape memory alloys which have a different properties from the conventional types, such as higher performance, quick response and high durability etc., are developed, and applied research has been actively conducted on shape memory alloys due to their practicality. For improving the characteristics of shape memory alloys and taking advantage of these characteristics, a technique for adding some processing to the materials has been proposed in this paper. Such material modification aims to expand the application area of shape memory alloys and improve the characteristics of the actuator and device using shape memory alloys. The coating technique aiming at biomedical applications using carbon-based thin films, and the powder molding technique by severe plastic deformation aiming at improvement of material strength and magnetic property are reported.

    Grained Co-added Ni-Mn-In alloy was solidified using Compression Shearing Method at Room Temperature method. As for the solidified material, crystal structure at room temperature and magnetic property were investigated. In the solidified material using a Ni_<45>Mn_<40>In_<15> target, both structural-phase and martensitic transition which are induced in connection with a temperature change were observed. It became clear that the solidified material has the similar characteristic as a Ni-Mn-In bulk alloy and a sputtered film.

    In this study, shape memory behavior on the Ni_<50.4>Co_<3.7>Mn_<32.8>In_<13.1> films is investigated for the practical application as a magnetically driven actuator device. The Ni_<50.4>Co_<3.7>Mn_<32 8>In_<13,1> films were fabricated by the sputtering and the films of 5 μm thickness were obtained by heat-treatment in two-step. The martensitic transformation (MT) temperatures of the film determined using the electric resistance measurement and the thermal hysteresis was smaller than 10 K. The magnetization experiments reveal the abrupt magnetization change ΔM of 26emu/g at 0.05T and the MT finishing temperature (M_f) change ΔM_f of -8.5 K at 5 T. The film showed the shape memory behavior of one-way SME by heating and applying magnetic field. For the Ni_<50.4>Co_<3.7>Mn_<32.8>In_<13.1>film, with increasing temperature, the decrease of elastic modulus and the increase of elongation were confirmed in martensitic phase from the result of tensile test.

    Ni-Mn-In films containing cobalt were deposited on a poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) substrate or an alumina substrate using a dual magnetron sputtering apparatus using Ni45Mn4oInisand Co targets. The RF power for Ni-Mn-In target was kept at 200 W, and the DC power for the cobalt target was changed from 0 to 15 W. The thickness of the deposited films was kept at about 1 μm. After deposition, the films were annealed at 1123 K for 3.6 ks. The cobalt concentration of the films depended on the DC sputtered power and the martensitic transformation temperature decreased with cobalt concentration of films. After heat treatment, the films showed the good crystalline order. The mechanical properties of the films were measured by a nanoindentation method. Hardness and elastic modulus of the heat-treated films were lower than those of as-deposited films. These values of the films were affected by the Co concentration and microstructure.

    Ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni_2MnGa has Heusler type crystal structure. Cubic structure of high temperature phase transforms to tetragonal one during cooling by thermo-elastic martensitic transformation. These transformation temperatures are below Curie temperature. Curie temperature decreased and transformation temperatures increased with increase of Ni composition in non-stoichiometric Ni_<2+x>Mn_<1-x>Ga (x=0〜0.19). Sputtered films were fabricated by a magnetron sputtering apparatus. The thickness of these films was 5 μm. Columnar structures which grew in parallel with the thickness of film were observed in these films. Crystal structures, transformation temperatures and magnetic properties of these films were similar to bulk specimens. Sputtered films showed two way shape memory effect.

    The Ni_2MnGa films were deposited on an alumina substrate with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using Ni_<50>Mn_<25>Ga_<25> and Ni_<52>Mn_<24>Ga_<24> targets. The sputtering power was 50 or 200 W. The thickness of the deposited films was about 5 μm. After deposition, the films were annealed at 873-1173 K. for 3.6 or 36 ks. The as-deposited films were crystalline and had columnar grains. After heat treatment, the grains widened and the grain boundary became indistinct with increasing heat treatment temperature. MnO and Ni_3(Mn, Ga) precipitations were observed in the heat-treated films. The mechanical properties of the films were measured by the nanoindentation method. Hardness and elastic modulus of as-deposited films were larger than that of arc-melted bulk samples. The hardness of the films was changed between 600 and 300 affected by the composition, crystal structure, microstructure and precipitation, etc. The elastic modulus of the films was also changed from 140 to 90 GPa with heat treatment conditions.

    LaNi_5 intermetallic compound has superior hydrogen-absorption and -desorption properties, and it is well known as a hydrogen storage material. Thin films of hydrogen storage alloy may be used as electrode of rechargeable batteries or fuel cell, a filter for hydrogen purification and various kinds of sensor. LaNi_5 thin films were prepared by a radio frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus with a sputtering power of 50-400W at substrate temperature of 323-573K. Mechanical properties of the films such as hardness and elastic modulus were investigated with respect to the sputtering conditions using nanoindentation in the present study. The difference in the structure gave an effect to the hardness of the films. For the same structure, the films deposited at higher sputtering power and higher substrate temperature showed higher hardness.     Ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni_2MnGa has Heusler type crystal structure. In this alloy, the martensitic transformation occurs within the ferromagnetic temperature range. Using the melt spinning method and the sputtering method, several kinds of Ni_2MnGa thin films were fabricated in order to study the physical and mechanical properties. These thin film specimens had good crystallinity and showed the crystal structure as same as bulk specimen. Rapidly solidified Ni_2MnGa ribbons made by single roll melt spinning method were 20μm in thickness and 1mm in width. The transformation temperatures, Ms, Mf, As and Af, were 120, 90, 125 and 150K, respectively. This was a brittle specimen. Sputtered Ni_2MnGa thin films were made by using a high frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus. The thickness of the thin film was 5μm. The films deposited on the poly-vinyl alcohol substrate showed shape memory effect.

    In this study, the mechanical properties of shape memory alloys, Ni_<2.1>Mn_<0.9>Ga and Ti51at%Ni were investigated. Ni_<2.1>Mn_<0.9>Ga was a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy which indicated magnetic field-induced shape memory effect, and Ti51at%Ni was known as a typical shape memory alloy. The temperature dependence of the sound velocities were measured using an ultrasonic pulse echo measurement. Experimental results show that the velocities decreased at the temperature of the transformation.

    The Ni-Mn-Ga films were deposited on a poly-vinyl alcohol substrate with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using Ni_<50>Mn_<25>Ga_<25> and Ni_<52>Ga_<24> targets. After separating from the substrates, the films were annealed at several temperatures for 3.6ks. The chemical composition of the films depended on the radio-frequency generating power, however, there was no dependence on the heat treatment temperature. Each deposited film has a columnar grain structure. After heat treatment, the width of columnar grains widened and then became indistinct with increasing heat treatment temperature. At more than 1073 K, the precipitation of MnO was observed clearly. The films showed he most crystallinity at 1073 K. The martensitic transformation temperature increased with increasing nickel content of films, while the Curie temperature decreased. The film obtained at 200 W using the Ni_<52>Mn_<24>Ga_<24> target after heat treatment at 1073 K showed one-way shape memory effect through the reverse martensitic structural transformation during heating.

    Ni-Mn-X (X=In, Sn) system alloy films as metamagnetic shape memory alloys were fabricated by sputtering method. After heat treatment, the films coincidentally showed the magnetic transformation and structural phase transformation (martensitic transformation). Their martensitic transformation temperatures became higher than room temperature and lower than the Curie temperature due to control of their compositions. The alloy films are expected as magnetic-field induced actuator materials, which enable the quick response and remote control.

    Ferromagnetic shape memory alloy is a multifunctional material with ferromagnetism and shape memory effect (SME), and is expected as a magnetic-field (MF) induced actuator material. The MF induced SME will enable the quick response and remote control. In the present study, the relation between the composition and SME was investigated for the Ni_2MnGa films. The films with various compositions were constraint-aged to make the two-way SME. The martensitic transformation (MT) temperature was higher than RT and lower than the Curie temperature (Tc) for the films. The mechanical properties are very important in the practical use. The effects of temperature and MF on mechanical properties of the films have been also investigated. Furthermore, the Fe addition as a ferromagnetic metal in the alloy will be effective for the improvement of magnetic properties and MF induced SME. The structure and SME of Fe-added films were investigated under the MF. The reversible two-way SME by the thermal change was confirmed for the all constraint-aged films through the MT and its reversion. The two-way SME by the MF up to 5 T was observed around the MT temperature on cooling for the constraint-aged film with the large gradient and the small thermal hysteresis in the strain-temperature curve. The MT temperatures decrease with increasing Fe content, while the Tc increases. The two-way SME by thermal change was also observed for the Fe-added films. The MF induced MT for the Fe-added film was evaluated by an XRD apparatus in high MF up to 5 T. It was confirmed the martensitic phase was stabilized by the MF. Furthermore, the MF induced SME for the Fe-added films was observed by the inducting the MT with MF around MT temperature on cooling. The strain change by the low MF of 1 T became large for the Fe added films.

    スパッタリング法により強磁性形状記憶合金Ni_2MnGa薄膜を作製し,物性を測定した.薄膜作製条件としてのターゲット組成,高周波電力,基板および基板温度などを種々変化させ,試料作製の最適条件を求めた.Ni,MnおよびGaの組成を変えたターゲットを用い,電力と膜厚および組成の関係を求めることにより合金組成の制御を行った.基板は無機および有機物を用い,基板温度と製膜条件を求めた.得られた薄膜は膜厚が1〜5μmで,ICPにより組成分析を行い,合金組成を決定した.スパッタリング法により結晶性の良い試料が得られたが,さらに熱処理を行い規則格子合金を作製した.物性としては変態温度,結晶構造とその温度変化および磁化の温度変化を示差走査熱量計,X線回折装置およびSQUID磁化測定装置を用いて測定した.その結果,変態温度(Ms,Mf,AsおよびAf)およびキューリー温度の値はバルク材と類似していることを明らかにした.また,バルク材と比べスパッタリングNi_2MnGa薄膜は脆性が小さい. 以上の結果,作製したスパッタリングNi_2MnGa薄膜はマイクロマシーンのマイクロアクチュエーターとして開発可能な素子である.

    Aiming at the development of an efficient process to make Zr-Ni-Mn alloy powders directly from the oxide resources of zirconium and manganese by using metallic calcium as a reductant, the hydrogen-absorbing and -desorbing properties of the synthesized alloys and the mechanism of formation of the alloy were studied. Firstly, more than 50 kinds of Zr-Ni-Mn alloys were synthesized by arc-melting and their properties were investigated in relation to the microstructure and the compositions. It was clarified that the alloys with a single phase just before separating into two-phases have most favorable properties for hydrogen storage, with the compositions of 42.2%Zr, 29.9%Ni and 27.9%Mn or 44.4%Zr, 34.3%Ni and 21.3%Mn. Secondly, the alloy powders with the compositions of 44.4%Zr, 34.3%Ni and 21.3%Mn were prepared by the metallothermic reduction method. It was found that the alloys were formed through a heterogeneous reaction between nickel in the liquid Ni-Ca alloy phase and the solid Zr and Mn phases. This mechanism was quite defferent from that in making Ni-rare earth alloys by the same method. The properties of the produced alloys for hydrogen storage was found to be a little inferior to those of the alloys produced by the arc-melting. It was considered that the properties must improve by removing the oxide layr formed on the alloy powder which makes the transit of hydrogen atom difficult.

    センサーやアクチュエータ用の形状記憶素子として本合金薄膜の実用化を考えた場合には,その機械的特性は非常に重要である.そこで,本研究では,スパッタ法によりNi-Mn-Gaスパッタ膜をアルミナ基板上に作製し,種々の熱処理を施して,組成,組織,構造に及ぼす作製条件の効果について調査し,得られた合金膜の機械的特性(硬さ,弾性定数)に及ぼす影響についてナノインデンテーション法により評価することを目的とした.
