Abstract During mid-Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 2, significant increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations from the eruption of the large igneous provinces is hypothesized to have induced a humid climate and an elevation in nutrient runoff from continents to the oceans, resulting in oxygen depletion in the ocean. However, hitherto there is limited insight into the driving factors of Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 from the Pacific and Asian continental margins, even though the former and the latter were the largest ocean and landmass at that time. Here, a multiproxy analysis for the Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 interval of the Yezo Group –deposited on northwestern Pacific along the active Asian continental margin– is interpretated to identify seven volcanic pulses, five of which may have elevated humidity, weathering intensity, and vegetational change in the eastern margin of Asia. Moreover, oxygen depletion occurred simultaneously in the northwest Pacific. Given that these environmental changes in the eastern margin of Asia were penecontemporaneous with the global carbon burial intervals during Oceanic Anoxic Event 2, the elevated nutrient supply from the Asian continental margin to the Pacific Ocean may have, in part, contributed to the worldwide depletion of oxygen of the ocean during Oceanic Anoxic Event 2.

Abstract
Rapid increases in anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 partial pressure have led to a decrease in the pH of seawater. Calcifying organisms generally respond negatively to ocean acidification. Foraminifera are one of the major carbonate producers in the ocean; however, whether calcification reduction by ocean acidification affects either foraminiferal shell volume or density, or both, has yet to be investigated. In this study, we cultured asexually reproducing specimens of Amphisorus kudakajimensis, a dinoflagellate endosymbiont-bearing large benthic foraminifera (LBF), under different pH conditions (pH 7.7–8.3, NBS scale). The results suggest that changes in seawater pH would affect not only the quantity (i.e., shell volume) but also the quality (i.e., shell density) of foraminiferal calcification. We proposed that pH and temperature affect these growth parameters differently because (1) they have differences in the contribution to the calcification process (e.g., Ca2+-ATPase and Ω) and (2) pH mainly affects calcification and temperature mainly affects photosynthesis. Our findings also suggest that, under the IPCC RCP8.5 scenario, both ocean acidification and warming will have a significant impact on reef foraminiferal carbonate production by the end of this century, even in the tropics.

The Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary occurs within the Upper Devonian Xom Nha Formation in Quang Binh Province, Central Vietnam. The stratotype section of the Xom Nha Formation (bed numbers Xo 1-39) comprises carbonates, and is divided into Unit I (Xo 1-13) mainly composed of whitish-gray bioclastic grainstone and wackestone, Unit II (Xo 14-28) dominated by bioclastic packstone and wackestone, and Unit III (Xo 29-39) characterized by weakly parallel laminated gray to dark gray lime-mudstone. Units I-III commonly contain well-preserved conodonts and ostracods. Some horizons of Unit II yield brachiopods, ammonoids, nautiloids, bivalves, tentaculitoids, crinoids and acritarchs. Age diagnostic conodont species of the Frasnian Palmatolepis linguiformis is commonly obtained from the upper part of Unit II. Unit III yields Pa. delicatula that is characteristic of the lowermost Famennian Pa. triangularis conodont Biozone. Two positive carbon isotope excursions are recognized, the lower excursion peaking in Unit I whilst the upper excursion peaks just below the local Frasnian-Famennian boundary (bed number Xo 28). Based on the biostratigraphy, these excursions equate to the Lower and Upper Kellwasser events. In the upper part of Unit II (Pa. linguiformis Biozone, bed numbers Xo 16-23), relatively diverse marine assemblages are recognized, indicating a temporal recovery of ecosystem after the Lower Kellwasser Event. By contrast, the diversity of lowermost Famennian marine organisms decreased markedly after the Upper Kellwasser event.

On Hideshima Island (Miyako area, Iwate Prefecture, northeast Japan), the Albian Hideshima Formation of the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian to Albian) Miyako Group consists mainly of alternations of turbidite sandstone and mudstone, thick sandstone, and conglomerate. It is also characterized by slump beds and debris flow deposits containing poorly preserved shallow-marine bivalves such as Glycymeris, Eriphyla, Nipponitrigonia, and rudists, representing typical allochthonous occurrences. Eleven genera of the benthic foraminifera have recently been identified in the mudstone of the middle part of the Hideshima Formation. The benthic foraminiferal assemblage is dominated by Bathysiphon spp., Recurvoides spp., and Haplophragmoides spp. Facies analysis and the composition of the benthic foraminifera indicate that the Hideshima Formation accumulated in a slope environment.

The Upper Cretaceous Himenoura Group is exposed in the eastern part of the Amakusa-Kamishima Island, Kumamoto, Japan, where it is divided into the Hinoshima and Amura Formations, in ascending order. Inoceramids, ammonoids, and microfossils (e.g., radiolarians and foraminifers) are abundant in this area. The Hinoshima Formation yields Dicarinella canaliculata and abundant Marginotruncana pseudolinneiana (foraminifers), Inoceramus amakusensis (inoceramid), and Texanites kawasakii (ammonoid), indicating a Santonian age. The Amura Formation yields a Campanian foraminifera assemblage composed mainly of Grobotruncana linneiana and G. cf. arca; these species are also abundant in the upper part of the Amura Formation. Therefore, the Santonian—Campanian boundary is probably situated in the lower part of the Amura Formation. In the Hinoshima and Amura Formations, the radiolarian assemblage is characterized by Amphipyndax stocki, Dictyomitra formosa, and D. koslovae, indicating the Santonian to Middle Campanian.

The upper part of the Yezo Group, which is widely exposed in southern central Hokkaido, consists of the Saku, Kashima, and Hakobuchi formations, in ascending order. Although the Yezo Group has been well studied in central and northwestern Hokkaido, little is known about the stratigraphy of the group in southern central Hokkaido. To clarify the geological age and microfossil faunal assemblage of the Yezo Group in this region, we studied the geology, litho-biostratigraphy, and microfossil-biostratigraphy of the group in the southern Oyubari and Tomiuchi-Azumi areas. Based on the stratigraphic distribution of benthonic and planktonic foraminifera in the Saku and Kashima formations in the studied areas, we establish four new benthonic foraminiferal zones, as follows (in ascending order): the Haplophragmoides obesus Assemblage Zone (upper Turonian), the Silicosigmoilina futabaensis Interval Zone (upper Turonian? to upper Coniacian), the Nuttallinella florealis-Notoplanulina japonica Concurrent Zone (upper Coniacian to Santonian), and the Lenticulina spp. Interval Zone (lower Campanian). The benthonic foraminiferal assemblage indicates the sequence was deposited at middle to upper bathyal depths from the late Turonian to early Campanian.

D/V CHIKYU shakedown cruises of CK05-04 Leg 2 (16 Nov.-14 Dec. 2005) and CK06-06 (6 Aug.-29 Oct. 2007) were carried out off Shimokita Peninsula of the Northeast Japan. During these two cruises, three continuous cores of 47m, 71m and 365m long were recovered from the seafloor of about 1200m water depth at Holes C9001A, C9002A/B and C9001C, respectively. Cuttings samples were collected from Hole C9001D from 522 to 647mbsf in penetration depth using riser drilling. The onboard laboratory systems integration test including primary processing and measurements of the recovered cores were performed for laboratory performance evaluation and laboratory staff training. Two coring sites (C9001 and C9002) are located in Hidaka Trough that is a forearc basin under tectonic effects of both subduction and arc-arc collision. Cored sediments at four holes (C9001A, C9002A/B, C9001C) are mainly composed of diatomaceous silty clay, and divided into four lithologic units based on the lithology at Hole C9001C. Unit A is characterized by common intercalations of tephra/sand, while Unit B is rarely found in tephra/sand intercalations. Unit C is composed of a unconsolidated sands, and the Unit D is similar to the Unit A that is common intercalations of tephra/sand layers. The integrated stratigraphy based on micropaleontology, tephrochronology and magnetostratigraphy suggests that a bottom age of Hole C9001C at 365mbsf is assigned to about 780ka, and the geological age of Hole C9001D ranges from 1.05 to 1.65Ma. The sedimentation rate is high and nearly constant of 62cm/kyr at Hole C9001C and is low of about 17cm/kyr at Hole C9001D. The core of Hole C9001C has a continuous sequence without hiatus although the disturbance interval is recognized around 130mbsf. Based on the age model, the volcanic activity around the Northwest Pacific is thought to decrease during approximately 250-640ka of Unit B of C9001C using magnetic susceptibility data and the stratigraphy of tuff layers. The physical measurements of various methods revealed that two different lithology of Clays A and B are recognized in the sediments. The Clay A contains abundant diatoms during high productivity period, while Clay B is affected by inflow of high terrigenous clastics or low diatom productivity. These clays suggest a cyclic sedimentation controlled by the Milankovitch cycles.

Three continuous cores of 47m, 71m and 365m in thickness were recovered from the subseafloor at about 1200m water depth at Holes C9001A, C9002A/B and C9001C/D during D/V CHIKYU shakedown cruises of CK05-04 Leg 2 (16 November-14 December 2005) and CK06-06 (6 August-29 October 2007). The core sediments are composed mainly of diatomaceous silty clay, and are divided into four lithologic units from Units A to D at Hole C9001C. The Unit A is characterized by common intercalations of tephra/sand and higher magnetic susceptibility (MS), while the Unit B is rare in tephra/sand intercalations with lower MS. The Unit C is composed of unconsolidated sands, and the Unit D is similar in lithology with the Unit A. The integrated stratigraphy of micropaleontology, tephrochronology and magnetostratigraphy suggest that the bottom age of Hole C9001C core is correlated with the base of the Brunhes Chron (Chron C1n) that is assigned to about 780ka (Middle Pleistocene). The geological age of Hole C9001D ranges from 1.05 to 1.65Ma (Early Pleistocene). The oxygen isotope stages from Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 1 to MIS 18 are recognized in Hole C9001C based on the correlation with a standard isotope curve, and these data accord well with the results of biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. The Unit A ranges from MIS 1 to MIS 8 (about 300ka), and Unit B spans from MIS 9 to MIS 16 (300ka-640ka). The Units C and D are assigned to MIS 17 and MIS 18, respectively. Hole C9001C core has a continuous sequence without hiatus although a disturbance layer occurs around 150mbsf. Thus, the Shimokita cores have a strong potential to improve biochronology and revise geological time scales for the past 800kyr in the Northwest Pacific region.

    More details Close

The Upper Mesozoic Sorachi and Yezo Groups are widely distributed in the Yubari-Ashibetsu region, located in the axial zone of central Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. The Sorachi Group in this area consists mainly of volcanic rocks and volcaniclastic turbiditic rocks, and is divided into the Gokurakudaira, Ashibetsugawa, Nakatengu and Shirikishimanaigawa Formations in ascending order. The Gokurakudaira Formation constitutes mostly picrites, accompanied by intercalation of dacitic-andesitic volcaniclastic rocks and arkosic terrigenous turbiditic sandstones derived from the East Asian Continent. The Ashibetsugawa Formation is composed of medium-bedded red mudstone with several andesitic volcanic sandstone beds. The other two formations are characterized by andesitic volcaniclastic rocks. The rocks of the Nakatengu Formation are thick breccia beds and very thin-bedded mudstones, while those of the Shirikishimanaigawa Formation are thick- to medium- bedded sandstones, mudstones and tuff. The Yezo Group conformably overlying the Sorachi Group comprises alternating beds of terrigenous turbiditic sandstone and hemipelagic mudstone, presumably resulted from the erosion of the uplifted Jurassic accretionary prisms (Oshima Belt) located in southwestern Hokkaido. The two stratigraphic marker units of olistostrome unit containing "Orbitolina Limestone" blocks (the Upper Aptian Kirigishiyama Olisto- strome Member) and felsic tuffaceous unit (the Upper Albian Maruyama Formation), are recognized in the Yezo Group. Based on the biostrati-graphic study using radiolarians and planktonic foraminifers, the Sorachi Group and the lower part of the Yezo Group range in age from Tithonian to early Albian. Many previous works have been considered that the Sorachi Group consisted of basaltic rocks and cherts. However, we found intercalation of thick sedimentary sequence composed of arkosic sandstones within the basaltic rocks in the investigated area. This suggest that the basaltic eruptions, in part, occurred in an adjacent area close to the Asian continent. Moreover, some volcaniclastic rocks of the Sorachi Group also contain many ooids including angular andesite fragments. The occurrence of these rocks also indicates shallow marine environment on the volcanic mound.

三芳香環ジノステロイドを用いたTADS(渦鞭毛藻指標)とC27 TAS(円石藻指標)を提案した。

Based on detailed bio-, carbon- and osmium isotope stratigraphy, we identified the basal horizons of the Cretaceous stages of Aptian, Albian, Cenomanian, Turonian, Coniacian, Santonian and Campanian as well as Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a horizon in the Yezo Group, Hokkaido, Japan. We also analyzed radiometric ages (U-Pb ages of zircon and 39Ar-40Ar ages of sanidine) of tuffs intercalated near the above cited stage boundaries and event horizons. Our result greatly improved numerical ages of Cretaceous stage boundaries as well as paleoenvironmental events.

The Cretaceou/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary Event, occurred at 66 million years ago, is one of the most famous extinction events in the earth’s history, and is characterized by dying out dinosaur and ammonites. Our study discovered a continuous succession from the uppermost Cretaceous to the basal part of Paleocene in the Nemuro Group at Kawaruppu section based on planktic foraminifers, calcareous nannofossils and carbon isotope stratigraphy. We also identified prominent positive peak of iridium and platinum contents at the K/Pg boundary strata in the studied sequence. The K/Pg boundary at Kawaruppu section is 1 m thick strata which is considered to be the thickest K/Pg boundary muddy strata in the world. Mid-Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events 2 and 1a are known as the extreme greenhouse climate periods. In order to understand paleo-environmental in the Northwest Pacific during OAE 2, 1a, we examined microfossil assemblage, carbon- and osmium isotope stratigraphy and clay mineral crystallinity of the OAE 2 and 1a intervals exposed in Japan. In the OAE 2 period, the emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces released large amounts of CO2 which induced a remarkable wet climate in the eastern margin of the Asian continent. Delivery of a large amount of nutrients from the land to the ocean caused elevation of primary productivity in the ocean surface, and resulted in depletion of oxygen in the ocean. The depletion oxygen continued relatively short period of time less than 100,000 years. On the other hand, in the OAE 1 a, anoxic environments in the ocean lasted over one million years in the Northeast Pacific.

In order to establish high-resolution international Cretaceous chronostratigraphic framework, we studied 206Pb/238U zircon geochronology of the 30 tuff beds that occur in the Yezo Group, Hokkaido, Japan. The 206Pb/238U ages of tuffs in the Yezo Group show that Aptian-Campanian interval ranges from 120 to 84 million years ago. Furthermore, we extracted apatite phenocrysts from the tuff beds, and analyzed trace element chemistry of the apatites. Based on the contents of magnesium and chlorine in the apatites of the tuffs in the Yezo Group, we found four tuff beds that are traceable throughout Hokkaido.

We geologically investigated in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic fields, Southeast and East Asia, mainly in the Devonian to Carboniferous and Permian to Triassic in Vietnam. We revealed geologic ages in detail on the basis of conodont biostratigraphic data, and reported mass extinction events and global anoxic to dysoxic events around Devonian-Carboniferous boundary (DCB), the Lower Triassic Induan-Olenekian boundary (IOB) and Smithian-Spathian boundary (SSB). The depositional environments and fossil assemblages in several sections intercalating with DCB, SSB and IOB were reconstructed by facies analysis and paleosynecological study methods. Finally we discussed about natural histories of marine organisms after extinction events thorough recovery intervals to adaptive radiations each depositional environments.

The objective of this study is to reconstruct long time scale variations in paleovegetation and terrestrial paleoenvironment by analyses of terrestrial plant-derived biomarkers and kerogens in sedimentary rocks from the Cretaceous Yezo Group, Hokkaido, Japan. In particular, we found rapid changes in angiosperm / gymnosperm vegetation ratio and coniferous vegetation evaluated by analysis of terrestrial plant terpenoid biomarkers. Moreover, we suggest that composition of long chain n-alkanols released from resistant macromolecule in kerogen can be useful as an indicator of deciduous broad leaf plant vegetation. Variation in the paleovegetation using the long chain n-alkanols released from kerogen is almost synchronous to that in angiosperm / gymnosperm vegetation using terrestrial plant biomarkers, confirming high applicability of the released n-alkanol proxy for reconstructing paleovegetation from ancient sediment.

Expansion of anoxic environments and extinction of marine biota occurred in the Tethys Sea and the Atlantic Ocean during the earliest Albian period, mid-Cretaceous (113 million years ago). In order to understand the trigger and mechanism of this event, we analyzed microfossil assemblages, organic and inorganic geochemistry and clay mineralogy of the black shale which were deposited during this event. Our analyses demonstrate that the expansions of anoxic environment were triggered by increased continental run-off which was caused by extremely humid climate in response to the mid-Cretaceous global warming. Increased run-off may have caused surface ocean eutrophication and elevation of primary productivity, and resulted in expansion of anoxia.

    More details Close

    More details Close
