    Super-resolution is a technique for generating a high-resolution image or video from a low-resolution counterpart by predicting natural and realistic texture information. It has various applications such as medical image analysis, surveillance, remote sensing, etc. However, traditional single-image super-resolution methods can lead to a blurry visual effect. Reference-based super-resolution methods have been proposed to recover detailed information accurately. In reference-based methods, a high-resolution image is also used as a reference in addition to the low-resolution input image. Reference-based methods aim at transferring high-resolution textures from the reference image to produce visually pleasing results. However, it requires texture alignment between low-resolution and reference images, which generally requires a lot of time and memory. This paper proposes a lightweight reference-based video super-resolution method using deformable convolution. The proposed method makes the reference-based super-resolution a technology that can be easily used even in environments with limited computational resources. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted experiments to compare the proposed method with baseline methods in two aspects: runtime and memory usage, in addition to accuracy. The experimental results showed that the proposed method restored a high-quality super-resolved image from a very low-resolution level in 0.0138 s using two NVIDIA RTX 2080 GPUs, much faster than the representative method.

    Feature extraction is essential for chemical property estimation of molecules using machine learning. Recently, graph neural networks have attracted attention for feature extraction from molecules. However, existing methods focus only on specific structural information, such as node relationship. In this paper, we propose a novel graph convolutional neural network that performs feature extraction with simultaneously considering multiple structures. Specifically, we propose feature extraction paths specialized in node, edge, and three-dimensional structures. Moreover, we propose an attention mechanism to aggregate the features extracted by the paths. The attention aggregation enables us to select useful features dynamically. The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperformed previous methods.

    Visual-semantic embedding aims to learn a joint embedding space where related video and sentence instances are located close to each other. Most existing methods put instances in a single embedding space. However, they struggle to embed instances due to the difficulty of matching visual dynamics in videos to textual features in sentences. A single space is not enough to accommodate various videos and sentences. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that maps instances into multiple individual embedding spaces so that we can capture multiple relationships between instances, leading to compelling video retrieval. We propose to produce a final similarity between instances by fusing similarities measured in each embedding space using a weighted sum strategy. We determine the weights according to a sentence. Therefore, we can flexibly emphasize an embedding space. We conducted sentence-to-video retrieval experiments on a benchmark dataset. The proposed method achieved superior performance, and the results are competitive to state-of-the-art methods. These experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed multiple embedding approach compared to existing methods.

    Recently, attention has surged concerning intelligent sensors using text detection. However, there are challenges in detecting small texts. To solve this problem, we propose a novel text detection CNN (convolutional neural network) architecture sensitive to text scale. We extract multi-resolution feature maps in multi-stage convolution layers that have been employed to prevent losing information and maintain the feature size. In addition, we developed the CNN considering the receptive field size to generate proposal stages. The experimental results show the importance of the receptive field size.

    Pansharpening (PS) is a process used to generate high-resolution multispectral (MS) images from high-spatial-resolution panchromatic (PAN) and high-spectral-resolution multispectral images. In this paper, we propose a method for pansharpening by focusing on a compressed sensing (CS) technique. The spectral reproducibility of the CS technique is high due to its image reproducibility, but the reproduced image is blurry. Although methods of complementing this incomplete reproduction have been proposed, it is known that the existing method may cause ringing artifacts. On the other hand, component substitution is another technique used for pansharpening. It is expected that the spatial resolution of the images generated by this technique will be as high as that of the high-resolution PAN image, because the technique uses the corrected intensity calculated from the PAN image. Based on these facts, the proposed method fuses the intensity obtained by the component substitution method and the intensity obtained by the CS technique to move the spatial resolution of the reproduced image close to that of the PAN image while reducing the spectral distortion. Experimental results showed that the proposed method can reduce spectral distortion and maintain spatial resolution better than the existing methods.

    The demand for character recognition in scene images has been growing. However, complex background, non-uniform illumination conditions and shadows are main obstacles for accurate detection and recognition of characters in scene images. For accurate detection, some methods that utilize a supplementary information given by a user with a touch operation using a device such as smart phones or tablets have been proposed. Based on this idea, in this paper, we propose a method for detecting character regions in scene image using auxiliary information given by a user. In the proposed method, the user will designate rough positions of characters in the image by an auxiliary lines and character regions are extracted based on the information. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally evaluated with a public database. It achieves better result for character region extraction if the characters are with complex background and uneven brightness.

    In this paper, we propose a novel image segmentation method exploiting an image abstraction method aiming for the application of image transmission and object-based image compression under very narrow bandwidth. Image abstraction is a method which reduces the complexity of a photograph and changes it into a picture like an artwork. In addition, our proposed method utilizes distance information obtained by a stereo camera and plane fitting. We conducted experiments using images obtained by two distinct stereo cameras and Inria 3DMovie Dataset v1, and subjectively confirmed that the proposed method is effective and promising.

    特徴量のみでは本質的に避けることができない誤認識を回避するために, 付加情報を用いるパターン認識という枠組みが提案されている. この方式では,パターン認識を行う際に, 付加情報と呼ばれるクラスの決定を補助する少量の情報を特徴量と 同時に用いて認識性能の改善を目指す. 付加情報は自由に設定でき,通常は誤認識率が最小になるように設定する. ここで問題となるのは,誤認識率が最小になる付加情報の設定方法である. 常に正しい付加情報が得られるいう理想的な条件においては 既に問題が定式化され,付加情報の割り当て方法が導かれている. しかし,実環境での使用を考えると, 付加情報に生じる観測誤差を考慮した割り当て方法が求められる. そこで本論文では 付加情報の観測誤差を考慮に入れて,問題を新たに定式化する. これは付加情報が誤らない場合にも有効な一般的なものである. 本論文で導いた割り当て方法が有効に機能することを マハラノビス距離を用いた実験で例示する.

    With development of cyber physical systems, information hiding technology that can go through the real environment has been expected, while some methods for embedding supplementary information into character patterns for improving recognition accuracy have been studied. If we change the design of character patterns drastically, it will become unnatural and readability will be lost. Supplementary information should be embedded as a natural design for humans, and it should be accurately extracted by using a camera. In this paper, utilizing the fact that human eyes are less sensitive to the change in color than in the luminance, we propose a method for improving recognition accuracy by embedding supplementary information hierarchically into character patterns by changing color of the region to some extent where it will not be visible for human.

    In this chapter, the authors present a new writing device called data-embedding pen, where a single inkjet nozzle is attached to its pen tip. When writing a stroke, the nozzle produces an additional ink-dot sequence along the stroke. The ink-dot sequence can represent various meta-information, such as the writer’s ID, the writing date, and a certain URL. Since the embedded meta-information is placed on the paper, it can be extracted by scanning or photographing the paper. Accordingly, by the data-embedding pen, a physical paper conveys any digital information. In other words, handwriting by the data-embedding pen can be a new medium connecting the physical and cyber worlds.

    In this paper, we propose a data-embedding pen, which adds an ink-dot sequence along a handwritten pattern during writing. The ink-dot sequence represents some meta-information, such as writer’s name, date of writing, and URL. The meta-information can be extracted from the handwritten pattern by image processing techniques and a stroke recovery technique. Consequently, we can augment the handwritten pattern by the data-embedding pen to carry arbitrary information.

    The purpose of this report is to improve an instance-based deskewing technique which is free from the conventional assumption that text lines are straight and parallel. The instances describe the relation among the skew angle, a skew variant, and a skew invariant in an compact manner. A main idea of the improvement is to increase the number of the skew invariants for more stable estimation of the skew angle. An experimental result on 55 document images showed that their skew angles were successfully estimated with errors smaller than 2.0 degrees.

    Pattern recognition with supplementary information is a new pattern recognition framework that determines an output class by combining a classifier's output and supplementary information suggesting the true class. Under the condition that supplementary information does not contain error, we have proposed a theory that reduces misrecognition rates. However, in the real world, we cannot observe any measure without error. Thus, in this paper, we discuss how to reduce misrecognition rates using the erroneous supplementary information, and show the possibility to reduce misrecognition rates experimentally.

    In pattern recognition, important measures including quadratic discriminant function (QDF) and Mahalanobis distance (MD) depend on the inverse of a covariance matrix. Since estimation accuracy of the matrix roughly determines pattern recognition performance, we have proposed an estimating method using "a shrinkage technique." In this paper, by introducing sphericity test and block diagonalization to the method, we achieve simplification and performance improvement.

    In order to use handwritings as a universal man-machine interface, we assume a pen device - data-embedding pen - which can embed digital data into handwriting by invisible ink in a real-time manner. This paper evaluates accuracy of extracting data from ink dots embedded in real patterns. Furthermore, a method to extract ink dots and recover data is proposed.

    A novel deformation estimation technique is proposed and applied to document skew estimation. The proposed method has two properties. First, it utilizes an invariant and a variant of a target deformation to be estimated. Second, it is an instance-based method where the deformation is estimated by referring stored instances which describe the relation among the deformation, the variant, and the invariant. The result of a skew estimation experiment on 44 document images has shown that the skew angles of 42 document images were successfully estimated with errors smaller than 2.0 degrees.

    Although skin color segmentation using different color spaces has been investigated using various approaches, there is still much to explore. Previous comparative analyses of different color space models did not sufficiently address the performance of color space models against the cases that different kind of skin color samples were adopted. In this paper, we present a comparative study on different color space models for skin color segmentation. To show the significance of choosing the proper color space model, we investigated thirteen different color space models using two different skin color samples on two databases. Results of comparative experiment show that the CIECAM02 color appearance model can most precisely segment the true skin color against various skin color samples.

    Pattern recognition with supplementary information which differs from the conventional pattern recognition has been proposed. This framework is capable of decreasing error rates by using not only a pattern itself but also its supplementary information that assists recognition. In the previous report, we confirmed a better recognition rate is achievable by the shift of the decision boundaries from the Bayesian ones in the experiment using a character data set. However, it was not the strict proof of the existence of the achievability because the Bayesian decision boundaries are estimates. In this report, to confirm the achievability in the strict sense, we make use of the artificial samples following the normal distributions. This enables us to obtain the Bayesian decision boundaries precisely.

    In this paper, design and recognition of human-readable and machine-readable patterns are investigated. Specifically speaking, we design character images printed with a horizontal stripe pattern, called a cross ratio pattern. The cross ratio derived from the cross ratio pattern represents the class information of the character. Since the cross ratio is invariant to projective distortion, the class information is extracted correctly regardless of camera angle. The character image itself is human-readable and therefore the character image with the cross ratio pattern is not only humanreadable and but also machine-readable and can be used as a medium for human-machine communication.

    In statistical pattern recognition, class conditional probability distribution is estimated and used for classification. Since it is impossible to estimate the true distribution, usually the distribution is assumed to be a certain parametric model like normal distribution and the parameters that represent the distribution are estimated from training data. In this paper, we propose a method to improve classification accuracy by transforming the distribution of the given data closer to the normal distribution using data transformation. We show how to modify the conventional quadratic discriminant function (QDF) in order to deal with the transformed data.

    Recently, full-text search has become high in demand. In the keyword search over document images, when performing recongnition as a preprocess, there are problems such as recognition error which causes word drop in the serch process. In addition, excessive time is necessary in carrying out the recognition process. To deal with this problems, we propose high presicion keyword serch system that matches feature vectors of images in the comparing process, without performing any recognition in advance. According to our experiments, in both high and low quality document images, high recall rates (99.9% and 99.6% respectively) and high presicsion rates (99.5% and 98.2% respectively) are achievable with this new method. Concerning features, we used the Directional Element Feature that proved efficient in recognizing print type.

    To estimate the parameters of mixed distribution precisely, a great number of training samples are required, especially in the case that the number of dimensions of feature vector is large. But unfortunately, compared with the number of dimensions, there are always not enough training samples. For this reason, the mixed normal distribution is rarely used in recognitio problems using high dimensional vectors, for example, as ones of character recognition. In this paper, by introducing Simplified Mahalanobis distance to the maximum likelihood estimates, the mixed normal distribution estimation algoritym for high dimensional vectors is proposed. The estimation algorithm is applied to character recognition. The effectiveness of the proposed method is examined by experiments using Japanese characters.

    In this paper, a new discriminant function for recognition of noisy patterns is presented. If noise is added to input data, the distribution of feature vectors will change according to the noise. In this case, probability density function of distribution is considered to be necessary to reflect the changes. We investigate how distribution of vectors changes if noise is added to some elements of vectors, and a discriminant function that reflects the changes is proposed. This method supplements the existing statistical methods and has high ability of recognition of data with noise. The effectiveness of the new method is shown by simulations with artificial data and experiments with real blurred character images.

    When we attempt to model a complex system including human as an important component, it may be difficult to represent the system by a deterministic mathematical model. The main reason of this difficulty is that the system itself inherently has some fuzziness concerning subjective judgement of human. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy nonlinear regresion analysis method with RFLN(RCE-based Fuzzy Learning Network), which is capable of extracting knowledge of the experts automatically, RFLN is an extended RCE (Restricted Coulomb Energy) model, hence it needs few iterations in learning and its additional learning is easy. The proposed method has higher flexibility than fuzzy linear regression analysis models. We propose learning algorithms to identify a nonlinear interval model which approximately includes all the given input-output data. The proposed method has characteristics of faster learning and of easier additional learning. The effectiveness of the method is shown by numerical experiments.

    In this paper, a new algorithm for selection of candidates for handwritten character recognition is presented. In the proposed algorithm, first for each character, two types of feature regions (multi-dimensional one and one-dimensional one) are estimated from training samples statistically. Then, by referring to the feature regions, candidates are selected and verified. To describe multi-dimensional feature region, we adopt the concept of marginal radius, which requires an evaluation function that describe the pattern distribution correctly. We propose Simplified Mahalanobis distance and observer its behavior by simulation. The effectiveness of the method is shown with the results of experiments.

    On handprinted chinese character recognition, one of the important problems is that some characters are confused with the ones having similar structure In order to distinguish from the similar characters, it is necessary to extract the characteristic parts from their feature vectors, and utilize them effectively. In this paper, we propose a new discrimination function, CMDF-Compound Mahalanobis Discrimination Function. Main feature of CMDF is the method of extracting the characteristic parts of similar characters using eigenvectors with small eigenvalues. In recognition experiment with ETL9B, most similar characters were recognized correctly by CMDF, and a very high recognition rate of 99.31% was obtained.

    A new algorithm to construct a dictionary for accurate and efficient chayacter recognition system is developed.The proposed algorithm is a clustering algorithm for partitioning sets of feature vectors of each character suitably and recursively by observing both within-class distribution and between-class variation.Here a class corresponds to a set of vectors of one character.For checking between-class variation,distribution on the axis of principal component of each character is referred.In result,a dictionary that has the suitable number of templates for each character can be constructed.By experiments,the effectiveness of the dictionary is shown.

    文字の検出や認識は、画像処理やパターン認識における基本的かつ重要な問題として古くから研究されてきた。伝統的な文字認識は統計的パターン認識の理論に基づき、正規化、特徴抽出、識別という流れでなされてきたが、大規模データが扱えるようになって多少様変わりしてきた。また、デジタルカメラにより取得した環境中の文字の検出や認識に関する需要が生じたことから文字の検出や認識に関する研究は活性化している。本稿では、これまでの文字認識研究の過程で開発されてきたビジョン技術について触れるとともに、著者らのグループによる最近の研究を紹介する。

    画像識別問題はコンピュータビジョン分野において中心的な課題の一つとして,多くの研究がなされてきた.これまでに確立してきた方法は Bag-of-Words 特徴によるものであり,今曰ではほとんどの研究が Bag-of-Words 特徴をもとにした方法になっている.これまでの研究はすべてユークリッド計量をもとに Bag-of-Words 特徴を作るものであったが,本研究ではマハラノビス計量を導入したマハラノビス符号化を提案する.2 つのデータセットにおいてベンチマーク実験を行ったところ,ユークリッド計量と比べて良好な結果を得た.

    <br /> 人間が日々目で見て読んでいる文字を自動的に認識,記録できれば,極めて有用である.我々はこれを Reading-Life Log と呼び,人間の趣向や考えの把握,行動履歴の検索等への応用を考えている.実現のためには,視 線情報の抽出,視線位置の文字の切り出し,文字認識技術が必要となる.本研究では,視線位追跡デバイス(アイト ラッカ)とweb カメラを用いて視線情報を抽出し,視線位置の画像の切り出しを行う.そして,切り出した画像を OCR エンジンに入力し認識結果を得る.本稿では,そのプロトタイプの実装の様子と,その性能を評価するために 行った屋内,屋外などの様々な環境や条件下での認識実験結果について論ずる.

    Electric power is one of the important infrastructures for our life. The electric power system is going to change drastically by clean energy, which is unstable power supplies, such as photovoltaics and wind power generation, and introduction of a distributed power generation. Although it was said that the electric power system in Japan was high quality, electricity shortages due to shutdown of nuclear power plants and vulnerability of the power system in a disaster become serious problems. In order to maintain a balance between supply and demand under such a situation, a mechanism called demand response, which manages user consumption of electricity depending on supply conditions at peak time, becomes the focus of attention. In this paper, we conducted research on the demand response. Since the number of electric power users is an immense number in practice, the management system will require a large computation time. In order to perform a demand response flexibly, we proposed a system with hierarchical structure, and conducted experiments by computer simulations to confirm the effectiveness.

    本研究では,手書きパターンをデータ化・保存する技術として,ペン先に搭載したカメラから得られる画像を利用した,手書きパターンの復元方法を提案する.本研究の特徴は,パターンの復元に紙の表面に現れる微細な紋様(以下紙紋と呼称)を利用する点にある.紙紋の利用には,従来のペンタブレットで用いる専用の装置や紙を使わずに手書きの自由度を保つという目的がある.復元の具体的方法としては,まずペン先カメラから得られた各フレームの画像から紙紋の特徴点を抽出する.次いで各隣接フレーム間での特徴点の対応を求めることでペン先の移動量を推定し,文字パターンを生成する.復元の実例を通して本研究の基本性能,展望を検証した.

    Pattern recognition with supplementary information which differs from the conventional pattern recognition has been proposed. This framework decreases misrecognition rates by using not only a pattern itself but also supplementary information that assists recognition. In the framework, a classifier suitable for the conventional pattern recognition has simply been used. Thus, there is room for improvement in the classifier. In this research, in order to improve the recognition performance with supplementary information, we attempt to change the recognition results of the classifier by the shift of decision boundary from the Bayesian one. Though this reduces recognition rates in the conventional pattern recognition, this increases those in the pattern recognition with supplementary information. We have confirmed this by recognition experiments.

    Pattern recognition with supplementary information which differs from the conventional pattern recognition has been proposed. This framework is capable of decreasing error rates by using not only a pattern itself but also its supplementary information that assists recognition. In the previous report, we confirmed a better recognition rate is achievable by the shift of the decision boundaries from the Bayesian ones in the experiment using a character data set. However, it was not the strict proof of the existence of the achievability because the Bayesian decision boundaries are estimates. In this report, to confirm the achievability in the strict sense, we make use of the artificial samples following the normal distributions. This enables us to obtain the Bayesian decision boundaries precisely.

    A web community is a set of web pages about a common topic. HITS (Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search) algorithm is a method for extracting web communities. HITS algorithm presumes that a web community consists of bipartite link structure of authority nodes and hub nodes. However, a web community usually has more complex structure. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for extracting web communities by presuming that a web community consists of n-layer structure and by introducing medium nodes (a page to which many pages links to and from which there are many links to other pages). Experimental results show pages that are hard to be extracted by HITS algorithm can be extracted by the proposed method.

    部分空間法は,簡潔で,かつ望ましい性質を持つため,パターン認識においてよく用いられる認識手法の 一つである.様々な改良法が提案されているが,そのほとんど全ては「暗に」特徴ベクトルの原点に依存している. ところが,原点の位置が部分空間法の認識性能にどのような影響を与えるのか,十分に解明されていない.本稿では, 「コアアフィン部分空間」と「誤認識穴」という概念を導入し,この問題について議論する.また,よく知られた部分 空間法であるCLAFIC 法と投影距離法の,ある種の類似性についても言及する.

    研究代表者らは、掲示されたフロアマップとスマートフォン内蔵のセンサだけで、施設管理者の協力がなくても屋内ナビを実現できる「ユーザー指向」な手法の研究開発を行ってきたが、デフォルメされ歪みの大きいマップも存在する。そのようなマップはこれまでの手法では対応できないことがわかっており、本研究課題ではユーザの負担にならない方法で歪みのあるマップに対応できる手法を開発することを目的としている。 当該年度では、歪みのあるマップでの推定精度を改善するために、マップマッチングに用いる粒子フィルタの処理の改良を行った。交差点や曲がり角のマップ上での位置と、方向転換ステップの推定位置を利用して縮尺を求めて保存しておき、粒子の縮尺の候補として利用する。また、マップの縮尺が一様でない場合に、位置と縮尺の両方について同時に正しいパラメータを持つ粒子が存在する確率は非常に低いが、各々は正しい場合が少なくないという観察に基づき、方向転換時に粒子のパラメータをシャッフルする手法を提案した。これらにより、多くの歪みのあるマップでの位置推定精度が向上した。 また、従来手法でもマップの小さなデフォルメに対応するために通路方向を利用していたが、広場領域において粒子の進みすぎ、進まなすぎが発生していた。この問題に対処するために、粒子の方位を補正する新しい手法を提案した。この手法では補正の閾値と量を通路の確信度によって動的に変化させ、無理のない補正を行う。これによって、従来よりも高い推定精度が得られることを実験によって確認した。

    本研究では、多様かつ解釈性が高い画像生成モデルを開発し、高精度な画像認識を実現することを目的としている。画像を基本要素へ分解する手法、高精細な画像を生成する手法などを要素技術と位置づけ、要素技術を組み合わせることで画像生成モデルを構築する手法を検討した。 画像を基本要素へ分解する手法については、漢字の文字画像を題材とし、その文字がどのような要素の組み合わせで構成されるかを機械学習の手法を用いて判定する手法について引き続き検討を行った。その結果、文字画像の多様な変形に対応するためにはあらかじめ画像をクラスタリングすることが有効であることが分かった。一方で、文字画像を含む一般的な画像を分解する手法については、画素の相関を用いた手法を引き続き検討した。相関の大きい画素どうしをまとめる一種のセグメンテーションにより、いくつかの基本要素に分解できる見通しを得た。 画像生成に関しては、敵対的生成ネットワークを用いた機械学習の手法を検討した。画像のそれぞれの領域が何の領域かという情報を与えることでより高精度に画像を生成する手法を検討した。一方で、機械学習の学習データ生成に用いることを考慮し、計算量の比較的少ないガウス混合関数を用いた統計的手法による画像生成手法についても検討した。 以上の手法を要素技術とし、画像生成モデルのプロトタイプを構築した。計算量を重視し、相関によるセグメンテーションとガウス混合関数を用いた生成モデルを組み合わせることである程度高速かつ高精度な画像生成が可能であることが分かった。構築した画像生成モデルを、道路環境認識のタスクで評価した。公開データセットを用い、道路上の物体の画像を生成することで学習データを増やし、認識精度が向上することを確認した。

    In this research, we aimed to establish a technique for realizing pedestrian navigation using an information board, which is provided for humans. Although conventional methods had significant limitations on the floor maps that can be used, we introduced deep learning to deal with various types of maps. We also proposed a method to determine the initial parameters using known objects in the map, and showed the possibility of eliminating the manual specification of the initial position by the user. In addition, we studied the position estimation using a ceiling-suspended guide plate.

    The purpose of this research is to construct a model that generates image data for machine learning. We have proposed a method based on statistical modeling. An image data is divided into partial images using the correlation between the elements of the feature vector extracted from the image. Then a set of image data is generated by modeling each part statistically. The effect of the proposed method was confirmed by an experiment of generating image data. In addition, we also investigated a data generation method using a neural network.

    In this research, we aim to realize indoor pedestrian navigation only with a smartphone even in the facilities without indoor maps and positioning infrastructures. Taking a picture of a floormap within an information board, which is posed for humans, with a smartphone, and it is analyzed to create a digitized map on the spot. The indoor pedestrian navigation can be realized by using the improvisational digitized map and the pedestrian dead reckoning. We developed a method to analyze a floormap image and a method to perform map matching using a map with unknown scale and orientation. We implemented the method on smartphones, and confirmed that the proposed framework can be worked in actual environments.

    Reducing the size of the video by encoding is a technique necessary for efficient transmission. However, if the compression ratio increases, the visibility will be deteriorated. The aim of this research is to develop a technique that can transmit visually natural videos even at the high compression rate. We studied encoding with polynomial representation, encoding by image generation, encoding by object extraction, and have developed a method that can produce visually natural videos compared with the conventional methods.

    Needless to say, characters are important as a message container, a disambiguation label (for their surrounding object and environment), and an atmosphere generator (by their font design). Unfortunately, past researches about character have mainly been devoted to realization of accurate OCR (optical character reader) using pattern recognition theories and heuristics. The aim of this research is to start new attempts about character and document. Specifically, we tried to realize accurate OCR without heuristics, analyze relationship between scene texts and their environmental context, and generate new fonts by considering design principle of various characters.

In this study, we developed a method for constructing a model that can generate image data by considering the structure. An image is divided into regions according to its structure.     Video is a powerful tool for transmitting information. It is desired to develop a methodology for transmitting video under various conditions. In this research project, we have developed a method for efficient video coding method utilizing the technique of image segmentation by recognizing objects in the video and extracting important regions. Using video sequences, subjective evaluation and quantitative evaluation were conducted. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed method was more effective than the conventional method.

    Information is exchanged between a human user and the external world by reading and writing. In this research, we focus on writing and challenge to implement "writing-life log", which is to record all information generated by the action writing. This is not just a record of information represented by writing; the written information must be related to which document and which part the writing has been done. This allows a better estimation of the user's preference, as well as a learning aid. In order to realize the above functionality, we have proposed and tested a method of recovering a handwriting by using a camera mounted on the pen, as well as a method of placing the recovered handwriting. As a result, it has been shown that the proposed method is capable of recovering and placing the handwriting accurately.

    本研究の目的は、紙への書き込みを電子文書にも反映させる手法を、特殊な紙を用いずに実現することである。具体的な手法は、次の通りである。ペンにカメラを取り付け、カメラで捉えた紙面に対応する電子文書とその位置をLLAHと呼ぶ文書画像検索法を用いて検索することにより、電子文書上の運筆情報として復元する。本年度は、精度や安定性を向上さえるための手法の開発に加えて、プロトタイプシステムを作成し評価実験を行った。具体的な成果は以下の通りである。 (1) データベース拡張とクエリ拡張による精度や安定性の向上:文書画像検索の精度が低下する原因の一つは画像に加わる射影歪みである。そこで、射影歪みが生じた画像を予めデータベースに登録しておくこと(データベース拡張)と検索時に射影歪みを予測し正面からの画像に補正した上で検索する手法(クエリ拡張)の2つの手法を考案し、有効性を検証した。 (2) 文書画像検索とトラッキングの組み合わせによる白紙部分への対応:文書画像検索だけでは白紙への筆記に対応できない。そこで、別途開発した紙指紋(紙紋)の抽出手法とそれに基づくトラッキングの手法を文書画像検索に組み合わせることによって、この問題を解決した。 (3) プロトタイプシステムの作成:以上の手法を動作させるためにカメラペンを試作し、動作実験を行った。照明変動やモーションブラーの問題が生じる場合があるものの、筆跡が復元できることを実験的に確認した。 以上の成果を2010年11月にインドで開催されたICFHRにて発表したところ、最優秀論文賞を受賞することができた。

As an application of the developed method, a real-time system for acquiring images and retrieving objects was constructed.     The aim of this research was to develop a fast and precise object search algorithm in a real scene image. In order to achieve a fast search, a method far representing an image by a polynomial and an algorithm for fast search using the Polynomial were developed. First, methods for representing an image by a function were investigated, and it was clarified that a polynomial was the best solution for the purpose of this research Since using standard least square method for approximating the image by a polynomial would cause the error, a method for approximating an image by a polynomial using the orthogonal polynomial was developed. Next, an algorithm for calculating the similarity between an image and the image represented by a polynomial effectively was developed. The similarity is calculated for each coefficient of the polynomial and the calculated similarities are summarized. Experimental results clarified that the developed method was much faster than the traditional methods. In addition, the developed algorithm was extended to calculate the inner product of an image and the basis which was necessary for using the subspace method. Using the subspace method, not only the recognition accuracy improves but also the error by the approximation decreases. Moreover, the idea of the developed method was applied for fast calculation of the continuous wavelet transform which was one of the important techniques in the field of signal processing. The integral calculation which is necessary for the continuous wavelet transform can be calculated very fast by the developed method.

    The aim of this research is to develop a method of actively acquiring character information in scene images with a video camera that is controllable by a computer. Detection methods of the area where characters exist and accurate recognition method of the character images were investigated. An object recognition method in the image was also investigated. The main results of this research are as follows. 1.Character recognition in scene images It is difficult to extract the area where the character string exists in a scene image because of low resolution, changing in the lighting condition, etc. An algorithm for precise character extraction using color and luminance information is proposed. Moreover, a method for detecting and recognizing an isolated character is also investigated. 2.Object recognition in scene images A method for recognizing objects in a scene image at high speed was investigated. The color histogram has been reported to be robust to the change and occlusion of the object compared with the other features. The proposed method achieves quick object detection by constructing color histograms efficiently. A technique for identifying a silhouette by representing the silhouette by a hierarchical graph was also investigated. Moreover, a novel approach of a template matching by representing an object image by a function was also investigated.

    To construct a document recognition system with brushing-up ability by self-learning, we have basic results. 1.Integration of recognition algorithms : (1)To describe category clusters in the feature space, clusters of hypersphere, hyperellipse, parallelepiped and convex polyhedron are introduced and the base of analysis of cluster structure is given. By proposing a reliability measure, a method of integrating recognition results is given. A self-learning recognition system is proposed. (2)Some basic properties on integration methods using ensemble learning and on multiple classifiers system are investigated. 2.Recognition theory and system : (1)It is known that ICA is effective for feature extraction and PCA is effective for recognition. (2)The effect of positioning the origin for subspace method is investigated. (3)A method to analyze a bias of predictive distribution in pattern recognition and a method correcting the bias are proposed. (4)A platform for web-based OCR systems are constructed with function to search servers. 3.Layout analysis : (1)A recognition algorithm of line graph images in documents by tracing connected components and a speedup method of tracing are proposed. (2)A screen pattern removal method is proposed which is useful for character pattern extraction from high-resolution color document images. (3)String extraction methods from low-resolution scene images by digital camera or video are proposed. (4) A principle of voting to local feature points is proposed and it is applied to isolated character recognition.

    本研究は、コンピュータビジョンの基礎技術となる、領域内の画素の動きが非一様な領域の画素の動きを正確に求め、物体の位置を検出し、3次元形状を復元することを目的とするものである。そのための要素技術として、昨年度は関数あてはめにより動きを検出する手法を検討した。今年度は昨年度検討した関数あてはめ法について様々な改良を加え、また、3次元形状復元手法について検討を行った。 1.関数あてはめ法の改良 昨年度の研究成果から、画素の動きを表現するためにはスプライン関数を用いるのが適当であることがわかったが、ノイズを含むデータに対しても過度に整合してしまい、ノイズに弱いという問題が残っていた。これを解決するために、ノイズに対して頑健なあてはめができる手法を検討した。その結果・画像側に適当な分散のガウスフィルタをかけることと、スプライン関数のパラメータに制限を加えることである程度頑健なあてはめができることが分かった。これらの成果を元に、動画像中の各画素の動きを求めるアルゴリズムを開発した。 2.3次元形状復元手法の検討 動画像から求まった各画素の動きの情報を利用して、動画像中の物体の位置および物体の輪郭を求める手法を検討した。スプライン関数を用いているため、関数の制御点がそのまま特徴点の位置を表す。これを利用して動き情報を得る手法を検討した。動き情報から物体と背景との境界を抽出し、境界から物体の輪郭を求め、輪郭の情報を利用してその物体の3次元形状を復元する手法を検討した。

    本研究では,低品質文字を高精度に認識することを目的とした.前年度中に得られた結果をもとに,認識手法について再検討し,文字認識システムを構築した.また,一般的なパターン認識手法への適用の可能性について検討した.本年度中に得られた研究成果を以下に述べる. 1.認識手法の検討 前年度の実績結果の分析や,学会発表で得られた意見等をもとに,本手法の妥当性と手法の改善策について検討した.その結果,文字認識手法の一つである部分空間法の他に,マハラノビス距離と呼ばれる識別関数を用いた認識手法も,ノイズによる影響を補正することが可能であることが分かった.マハラノビス距離に基づく手法を与え,実験を行なって有効性を認識した. 2.認識システムの構築 提案手法をもとに,ワークステーション上に文字認識システムを構築した.スキャナを用いて読み込まれた文字画像をワークステーション上に取り込み,提案手法によって認識を行い,その結果を出力するシステムとした. 3.一般的なパターン認識への適用 文字パターンでの研究の成果を踏まえ,画像認識や音声認識など,一般的なパターン認識への適用について検討した.雑音が存在する場合にその雑音によって認識対象パターンがどう変形するかを定量化し,その変形に応じて参照パターンを変化させることで,雑音を含むパターンを認識することが可能であることが分かった.この件については今後も引き続き検討していく必要がある.

    本年度の研究では、当初の目的であった。完全自動文書認識システムを完成させるまでに至らなかったが、次の成果を得た。これらを基礎にして展開研究を計画している。 1.文字パターンの特徴量空間である196次元ベクトル空間において、各字種の特徴量の集まりを正2^N面体型特徴領域と2^N面体型特徴領域との共通部分として定め、字種間相互の特徴領域の重なりを調べた。2^N面体型特徴領域はマハラノビス距離による超球型特徴領域の近似であり、線形計画法を用いて重なりを調べるために導入した。調べた結果、1字種の特徴領域と重なる特徴領域を持つ字種数が平均79であることがわかった。これは、単純なマンハッタン距離を用いた正2^N面体型特徴領域だけによるものに較べて約1/5になっているが、まだ、重なりが大きいことを意味している。 2.文字の特徴領域の重なりが類似文字に起因することに着目し、類似文字であるかどうかの判定法を考え、類似文字間の識別法としてその相違部分を重視する方法を考案した。また、低品質文字の認識のため、動的重み付き単純類似度を考え、つぶれ度による文字品質の判定により、品質に応じた識別手法を適用することで、より高精度な認識ができることを明らかにした。 3.日本語文字列の生成確率モデルとして文字trigram-単語trigramの複合モデルを考え、これを用いて誤りを含む認識結果候補文字列からより正しいもの選択する手法を開発した。 4.文書レイアウト解析については、必ずしも長方形ではない文章ブロックを抽出する方法を考案し、実験により検証した。

    The purpose of the research project is to solve the problem to classify a large dictionary for printed character recognition into a large number of small dictionaries, which results in solving drastically the problem to make the character recognition faster. We have attained the purpose through the development of a new technique and an algorithm to use some structural parameters of characters suitable for classification of the set of characters to be recognized into twu groups with sufficiently high accuracy. These structural parameters are mainly concerned with the structural complexity of characters especially peculiar to Japanese characters, e.g., 'Kana' and 'Kanji' and also with the configuration of histograms of characters. On the other hand, the extreamely high accuracy of classification is obtained by introducing the region called as a gray zone to be defined in the neighbor of the boundary of two groups of characters and to allow every character existing in the gray zone to belog to both groups. It is certainly expected that our technique and algorithm developed in the resarch project will make such character recognition systems as based on pattern matching at least five times as fast as usual ones by classifying a large dictionary for recognition into may small dictionaries.

    本研究では,文字認識用辞書のテンプレート複数化のための新たなクラスタリング手法を開発することを目的としている.本研究は主に,クラスタリング手法の開発,開発した手法の妥当性の検証の2つの柱から成っていた.以下,それぞれについて研究実績を述べる. 1.クラスタリング手法の開発 従来クラスタリングとはパターンをその類似性によって分類する目的で行われるものである.本研究では同一カテゴリー内のパターンを細分化し,他のカテゴリーのパターンと区別できるような複数のクラスタに分割することが目的であり,従来法をそのまま用いたのでは目的とするクラスタ構成を得ることはできない.本研究ではこの点を踏まえ,テンプレート複数化のための新しいクラスタリングアルゴリズムについて検討した. 具体的には,まずサンプルパターンの集合を主成分分析し,固有値の大きい軸上でサンプルパターンをこの線分上に投影し,主成分軸上における重心の位置で分割してそれぞれにおいて分布形状を表すパラメータを求める.そして,カテゴリー間分布を表す指標としてカテゴリーの重心間を結ぶ線分を用い,あるカテゴリーの領域の端点と各カテゴリーの重心の距離によって誤認識が生じるかどうかを判断し,誤認識が生じると判断された場合にカテゴリー内のサンプルパターンを分割して2つのクラスタにする.これを繰り返すことにより,最終的にサンプルパターンから推定した分布形状のみからは誤認識が生じないようなクラスタ構成とする.そして,各クラスタごとに代表ベクトルを作成し,認識用の辞書とする. 2.手法の妥当性の検証 1.で考案した手法の有効性を確かめるため,実際の文字パターンに適用し,辞書作成および認識の実験を行った.その結果,従来法と比較し,総カテゴリー数が同程度の場合本手法で作成した辞書を用いた方が高い認識率を得ることができた.

    本研究では文字認識の高速化・高精度化を目指し、総カテゴリー数が少なく高精度な辞書を作成する手法の考案を目的としている。本研究は主に、文字特徴量の統計的性質の解析、マルチテンプレート化の手法の検討、開発した手法の妥当性の検証の3つの柱から成っていた。以下、それぞれについて研究実績を述べる。 1.文字特徴量の統計的性質の解析 文字特徴量の分布として、同じ字種の集合内での分布(級内分布)と、字種間の分布、すなわち空間上で各字種の特徴量の重心(あるいは中心)がどのように分布しているか(級間変動)を、多変量統計解析の手法(主成分分析等)を用いて調べた。その結果文字特徴量について、(1)字種内の分布の広がりに対して字種間の分布はかなり密であること、(2)字種内の分布はかなり偏っていること、(3)領域が重なっている字種対は少ないこと、(4)字種ごとに主成分の方向が大きく異なること、等が分かった。 2.マルチテンプレート化の手法の検討 1.で明らかになった文字特徴量の分布状況を考慮し、マルチテンプレート化の手法を検討した。そして、まず字種ごとの学習パターンから得られた特徴量の集合をそれぞれ一つのカテゴリーとみなし、分割の必要のあるカテゴリーを分割していくことでマルチテンプレートの辞書を作成する手法を考案した。分割が必要かどうかは、文字特徴量の分布形状をもとに誤認識が生じる可能性があるか否かで判断する。ただし、辞書作成には、分割に用いるクラスタリング法が重要な役割を持つことが分かった。より高精度な辞書を作成できるクラスタリング法の検討は今後の課題である。 3.手法の妥当性の検証 2.で考案した手法の有効性を確かめるため、実際の文字パターンに適用し、辞書作成および認識の実験を行った。その結果、従来法と比較し、総カテゴリー数が同程度の場合本手法で作成した辞書を用いた方が高い認識率を得ることができた。

  3. 情報埋め込みを用いた人間と機械に優しい情報提示技術の開発

    ユビキタス社会の実現に向け、あらゆるものに読み取り可能な情報タグを付与する技術(RFID等)が注目されている。しかし、既存の情報タグは機械可読性に優れているが、人間が直接内容を理解することができない。従って、書かれている情報を人間が直接知ることができず、未知の情報にアクセスすることへの不安が残る、人間と機械の認識の相違による誤りが発生する可能性が否定できない、等の問題が残る。また、RFIDタグが大量に使われるようになると、その廃棄などによる環境問題が生じる可能性がある。本研究では、人間と機械の両者にとって可読性が高い情報提示技術を開発することを目的とする。具体的には、人間にとって可読性の高い文字パターンを用い、デザインを工夫することで情報を埋め込む。これにより、文字パターンに情報提示のメディアとしての新しい価値を与えることが可能となる。

    実用的な文字認識システムには,より多様な文書に対応できることが求められている.明瞭に印刷された活字文書や丁寧に書かれた手書き文字のような高品質な文字については,パソコンのソフトウェアでもある程度高精度な認識が可能である.しかし,複写機による複写やファクシミリによる転送で劣化した低品質な文書や変形の大きい手書き文字の高精度な認識は,これまでに開発されてきた手法と全く異なる手法が必要となり,非常に難しく,現在の認識システムでは実現できていない.本研究では,低品質な印刷文字や変形の大きい自由手書き文字を高精度に認識するための汎用文字認識システムについて検討する.
