Abstract To achieve a behavioral goal, we often need to maintain an internal action plan against external interruption and thereafter retrieve the action plan. We recently found that the maintenance and updating of motor plans are reflected by reciprocal changes in the beta and gamma power of the local field potential (LFP) of the primate medial motor areas. In particular, the maintenance of the immediate motor plan is supported by enhanced beta oscillations. However, it is unclear how the brain manages to maintain and retrieve the internal action plan against interruptions. Here, we show that dynamic theta changes contribute to the maintenance of the action plan. Specifically, the power of the theta frequency band (4–10 Hz) of LFPs increased before and during the interruption in the dorsal premotor areas in two monkeys. Without theta enhancement before the interruption, retrieval of the internal action plan was impaired. Theta and beta oscillations showed distinct changes depending on the behavioral context. Our results demonstrate that immediate and suspended motor plans are supported by the beta and theta oscillatory components of LFPs. Motor cortical theta oscillations may contribute to bridging motor plans across behavioral interruptions in a prospective manner.

Electrocorticography (ECoG) has drawn attention as an effective recording approach for less invasive brain-machine interfaces (BMI). Previous studies succeeded in classifying the movement direction and predicting hand trajectories from ECoGs. Despite such successful studies, there still remain considerable works for the purpose of realizing an ECoG-based BMI robot. We developed a method to predict multiple muscle activities from ECoG measurements. We also verified that ECoG signals could be effective for predicting muscle activities in time varying series for preforming sequential movements. Each ECoG signal was filtered by different bandpass filters for sensorimotor rhythms, normalized by the standard z-score, and smoothed by a Gaussian filter. We used sparse linear regression to find the best fit between frequency bands of ECoG and electromyogram (EMG). We also predicted angle of 4 DOF robot arm from the decoded EMG using 3-layer neural network. Consequently, this study shows that it could derive online prediction of angle of robot arm from ECoG signals.

In the hippocampal CA1 area, repetitive correlated spiking of pre- and postsynaptic neurons can induce LTP and LTD , depending on the timing of the pre- and postsynaptic excitation(Spike timing Dependent Plasticity). While, it is shown that LTP and LTD are triggered depending on the level of postsynaptic intracellular calcium concentration. In this study , Ca^<2+> influx induced by the protocol of timing between pre- and postsynaptic excitation were spatially investigated by using the calcium imaging method in the hippocampal CA1 area. We analized the dynamics of calcium influx during repetitive stimulus and discussed the relatio between the dynamics and themaghifaile of STDP that the magnitude of LTP and LTD closely related to the velocity of calcium influx during repetitive stimulus.
