This study aimed to explore a wind band instructor’s perceptions affecting the implementation and use of the Sound Visualization System (SVS) in wind band instruction, and the pedagogical beliefs underlying those perceptions. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with a wind band instructor before and after an SVS trial, and analyzed using SCAT (Steps for Coding and Theorization). The results revealed that the instructor recognized the system in three dimensions: 1) as a tool supporting students’ “self-regulated individual practice”, 2) as a system promoting student autonomy through its objectivity, and 3) as a complementary tool rather than a replacement for instructor guidance. The instructor’s recognition was shaped by two key pedagogical beliefs: emphasis on student autonomy and a long-term educational perspective aimed at fostering lifelong musical engagement.

Online discussion based on the community of inquiry (CoI) framework has received considerable popularity due to its potential benefits for enhancing problem solving skills and achieving deep understanding in the long term. However, it is challenging to make learners actively conduct a discussion using typical environments (e.g., asynchronous online forum). Information-organizing activity (IOA) has been proposed as one of the preparatory activities for preparing learners to actively conduct a discussion. Compared to the typical structured summary writing (SW), kit-build concept mapping (KBCM) has been proposed in past studies as an alternative IOA with the potential of fostering more cognitive presence and higher-level inquiry messages. However, such potentials were yet to be confirmed by a comparative study with a balanced sample size. Additionally, conceptual knowledge was hypothesized as influential in affecting learners’ inquiry. This follow-up study aims to confirm the potentials of KBCM as an alternative IOA for achieving better discussion. Moreover, this study contributes to investigating the relationship between conceptual knowledge and inquiry stages performed by learners to explain the effect of KBCM. By analyzing the discussion transcripts of 87 undergraduate computer science students from a public university who engaged in CoI-based discussions on linear algebra, this study found further evidence that KBCM is effective for fostering exploration, the evidence that a higher conceptual knowledge level after KBCM contributed to more exploration, and a tendency to transition between exploration and integration among KBCM learners.

There has been increasing attention on inquiry learning, project-based learning, and design thinking as “knowledge creation” in various educational sectors in Japan, such as high school education, higher education, and professional education. However, learning as knowledge creation requires learners to not only participate in knowledge-creating activities but also to join in a knowledge-creating culture. Furthermore, knowledge building, which is a theory for learning as knowledge creation, has been used in research on classroom practices, learning environment design, technologies, and analysis methods over the past thirty years. These results contribute to discussions on how to support learners’ engagement in sustainable idea improvement. Consequently, this paper introduces knowledge-building research on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and recent learning analytics studies.

<p> In this study, we propose a new evaluation procedure for learning as knowledge creation, a recently emerging pedagogical approach. We developed the evaluation procedure by using socio-semantic network analysis and text-mining for visualizing the knowledge creation process. The proposed procedure was applied to written discourse generated by university students on a CSCL system, studying in the context of project-based learning. Results suggested that we succeeded in identifying differences in learning processes between high and low learning-outcome groups. We also examined the advantages and disadvantages of our proposed procedure. </p>

In a higher education, improvement of generic skills (especially team work skills) is attracting attention. Many universities have begun an active learning include Project Based Learning and Problem Based Learning (PBL). Tottori University develops new education curriculum with creation for students from all faculties. Students learn teamwork skills as follows: sharing purposes, distribution of roles, sharing information and logical argument. There are two problems. (1) Students do not write a good reflection report. It is necessary to improve their quality. (2) Students do not describe their argument with the reason. This is the case study of activities with Computer Supported Collaborative Leaning (CSCL). The first result of this study is an increased number of characters per report by visualizing discussion. The second result showed a students' understanding of the discussion.

In higher education, education of generic skills draws attention. Generic skills are fundamental skills indispensable for Innovation Education with real society. Nevertheless, as teaching and evaluation methods of generic skills are not clear, we developed a new framework for basic education program. In this study, we propose a framework of basic Monozukuri education program for generic skills. We suggest we could provide common experience of problem solving in a plurality of classes, and we could evaluate learners&rsquo; attainments based on this framework.

In this paper, we examined how a map for information and systems in education should be designed for users who are not engaged in research activities at JSiSE, such as those in business and industry, teachers in public education, researchers in other fields, and learners. We proposed several images of the map, assuming that the map would be drawn based on the users' interests. We also discussed the data structure that would enable the creation of the maps we proposed. Based on these ideas, we plan to develop maps that will promote dialogue to generate further questions by connecting research questions in this field to the interests of people other than JSiSE researchers.

This study aims to examine how to support learners to think about the essential meaning ofdesign in Human Centered Design (HCD) education. In HCD education, particularly professional education, many learners have problems with applying their knowledge and skills that they studied in education programs to their work because the working situations are different from the classroom. To solve this problem, I designed a new learning environment to support the transfer of their knowledge and skills by thinking about the characteristic of HCD. The results of the lesson show that the proposed method is effective.

<p>Electronic bulletin boards are utilized in various ways in modern society. These days, researches related to data science with vast data accumulated in bulletin boards or learning analytics in educational institutions are increasingly demanded. This study analyzed targeting the data written into the electronic bulletin board for information sharing used by the student staffs who we are collaborating to make continuous improvement of an active-learning classroom created at a technological college. Discussion process visualization system was used for this analysis. Various analyses of the data have been in the progress already, and we conducted network analysis this time from the viewpoint of multi-vocality, which has been noticed in recent years. Network analysis enables to visualize change in how people interact with each other based on data and also analyze interaction or chronological changes between participants. We particularly focused on the collective cognitive responsibility of the student staffs from the interaction at the bulletin board and carried out the analysis.</p>

In recent years, many university students are using facilities for active learning (AL) classes. However, sustainable operational organizational people who have studied theory of learning are essential for maximizing the effects of the facilities. We hypothesized that learning in the organizations as extra-curricular activities may enhance university students’ 21st century skills and so forth. We analyzed articles on Bulletin Board System (BBS) which was used by students who worked as operational student-staff members in an AL facility using Social Network Analysis method. From the analysis, we found a part of the process of learning which showed the student-staff members deepened their learning in mutual interaction. Based on these results, we implemented an additional learning support system to the BBS and evaluate the effect of the function. The results suggested that the additional function was effective especially in novice student-staff members.
