This study examines the neural mechanisms behind integrating syntactic and information structures during sentence comprehension using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Focusing on Japanese sentences with canonical (SOV) and non-canonical (OSV) word orders, the study revealed distinct neural networks responsible for processing these linguistic structures. The left opercular part of the inferior frontal gyrus, left premotor area, and left posterior superior/middle temporal gyrus were primarily involved in syntactic processing. In contrast, the right inferior frontal sulcus, bilateral intraparietal sulci, and the left triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus were linked to information structure processing. Importantly, the left opercular part of the inferior frontal gyrus (BA44) played a crucial role in integrating these structures during the later stages of comprehension, particularly when processing the second noun phrase. These findings enhance our understanding of the complex interplay between syntactic and information structures in language comprehension.

We investigated pupillary responses to the world’s shortest fixed verses, Japanese haiku as aesthetic poetry (AP) and senryu as comic poetry (CP), in comparison with non-poetry control stimuli (NP) comprised of slogans that had the same rhythm patterns. Native Japanese speakers without literary training listened to these stimuli while we recorded their pupil diameters. We found that participants’ pupils were significantly dilated for CP compared to NP in an early time window. While AP also evoked larger dilations than NP, the latency for AP-related pupil dilation was relatively long. Thus, lay people experience quick and intense arousal in response to funny and humorous words, while aesthetic properties of words may also elicit intense but slower changes in listeners’ arousal levels, presumably because they evoke more implicit and subtle emotional effects. This study is the first to provide evidence that poetic language elicits human pupillary dilation. A better understanding of the cognitive and neural substrates for the sensitive awareness of pleasures expressed via poetic language will provide insights for improving mental and physical health. Hence, pupillometry can act as a useful convenient measurement to delineate the sympathetic activation of emotional contexts via language.

Abstract Previous studies suggested the possibility that the red nucleus (RN) is involved in other cognitive functions than motion per se, even though such functions have yet to be clarified. We investigated the activation of RN during several tasks and its intrinsic functional network associated with social cognition and musical practice. The tasks included finger tapping, n-back, and memory recall tasks. Region of interest for RN was identified through those tasks, anatomical information of RN, and a brain atlas. The intrinsic functional network was identified for RN by an analysis of connectivity between RN and other regions typically involved in seven known resting state functional networks with RN used as the seed region. Association of the RN network with a psychological trait of the interpersonal reactivity index and musical training years revealed subnetworks that included empathy related regions or music practice related regions. These social or highly coordinated motor activity represent the most complex functions ever known to involve the RN, adding further evidence for the multifunctional roles of RN. These discoveries may lead to a new direction of investigations to clarify probable novel roles for RN in high-level human behavior.

Refusal is considered a face-threatening act (FTA), since it contradicts the inviter’s expectations. In the case of Japanese, native speakers (NS) are known to prefer to leave sentences unfinished for a conventional indirect refusal. Successful comprehension of this indirect refusal depends on whether the addressee is fully conventionalized to the preference for syntactic unfinishedness so that they can identify the true intention of the refusal. Then, non-native speakers (NNS) who are not fully accustomed to the convention may be confused by the indirect style. In the present study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) of electroencephalography in an attempt to differentiate the neural substrates for perceiving unfinished sentences in a conventionalized indirect refusal as an FTA between NS and NNS, in terms of the unfinishedness and indirectness of the critical sentence. In addition, we examined the effects of individual differences in mentalization, or the theory of mind, which refers to the ability to infer the mental states of others. We found several different ERP effects for these refusals between NS and NNS. NNS induced stronger P600 effects for the unfinishedness of the refusal sentences, suggesting their perceived syntactic anomaly. This was not evoked in NS. NNS also revealed the effects of N400 and P300 for the indirectness of refusal sentences, which can be interpreted as their increased processing load for pragmatic processing in the inexperienced contextual flow. We further found that the NNS’s individual mentalizing ability correlates with the effect of N400 mentioned above, indicating that lower mentalizers evoke higher N400 for indirect refusal. NS, on the contrary, did not yield these effects reflecting the increased pragmatic processing load. Instead, they evoked earlier ERPs of early posterior negativity (EPN) and P200, both of which are known as indices of emotional processing, for finished sentences of refusal than for unfinished ones. We interpreted these effects as a NS’s dispreference for finished sentences to realize an FTA, given that unfinished sentences are considered more polite and more conventionalized in Japanese social encounters. Overall, these findings provide evidence that a syntactic anomaly inherent in a cultural convention as well as individual mentalizing ability plays an important role in understanding an indirect speech act of face-threatening refusal.

We experimentally examined the neural mechanism for the understanding of a speaker's intention in verbal communication. The speaker's intention is often communicated as the implicature by an indirect utterance, and it is interpreted through the pragmatic inference with the explicit meaning and context. We recorded the electroencephalogram (EEG) of a participant when s/he understood the implicit intention in Japanese conversation. We localized the source of the EEG and their transition to examine the relevance of the theory of mind to the understanding of the implicit intention. We have found the deep relevance of the anterior cingulate cortex and the precuneus to the understanding of implicature and the deep relationship between the understanding of implicature and the temporal processing.

Neuroimaging biomarkers to forecast the short (4 weeks) or long-term effects of physical and cognitive exercise prescriptions were explored using fMRI. It was suggested that the resting state (RS) activation in the anterior cingulate gyrus may be the potential indicator in both terms. To more specifically extract the response to cognitive stress in older adults, a neurofeedback fMRI system using a small humanoid robot was developed. The RS activation in the posterior cingulate gyrus and visual network was deactivated depending on the neurofeedback training, while such deactivation was not observed in the older adults, suggesting decline of cognitive reserve. An fMRI study using a trustworthy task suggested that the first impression dominates the judgement of trustworthiness even after disclosing the ‘fact’. Decline of cognitive processing to update interpersonal impression may be considered to conduct interventions for older adults.

This study examined the neural basis of pragmatic inference by EEG experiments. We manipulated context to control the type of inference, namely, deduction and abduction. In the experiment in which discourses were visually presented to Japanese native speakers, we observed negative event-related potentials (ERPs) around the latency of 500 ms for understanding implicit meaning. The amplitude of ERP for the latter was greater than the former. The generators for the ERPs were localized in the frontal and occipital regions of medial part. This suggests that the pragmatic inference was performed simultaneously in multiple regions in the brain.

In this grant, we have done four things: first, we created a database of two-kanji compound words for native Chinese- and Korean-speaking students who are learning Japanese, available as a search engine(http://kanjigodb.herokuapp.com). Second, using a corpus from the Mainichi newspaper (2000-2010), we created a Web-accessible search engine for 2136 joyo-kanji and their compounds (www.kanjidatabase.com). A paper explaining these tools was accepted by Psychological Research (Tamaoka et al., in press). Third, we created a Web-accessible experimental software for kanji semantic space. Finally, we published an ERP study of Chinese-and-Japanese bilinguals, indicating non-language selective word activation of both languages, but a cut-off mechanism for sentential processing of a target language (Tamaoka et al., 2016).

A neuroimaging model of chopsticks manipulation using fMRI was designed in order to investigate its role as a cognitive motor training in daily life. The subjects performed virtual performance of bean transfer test which is employed as one of the physical activity batteries for older adults. By introducing precise reaction and execution time, the effect of aging was significantly observed at the switching timing between the manipulations. The success rate of operation correlated with the activation in the left parietal lobe. Among the resting state networks, activation in the default mode and sensory motor networks correlated with the performance of the subjects. It was suggested that fMRI may provide the biomarker to evaluate the response to cognitive motor intervention.

In order to extract the characteristics of age-related changes in brain maps, which may be affected by individual backgrounds, a system to enhance the detection of potential cognitive decline by using an encoding protocol, processing progressive stress test and simultaneous measurement of autonomic nerve reflex for evaluation of response of the whole brain system were developed. It was observed that functional connectivity patterns of the neuronal circuits changed depending on the processing speed in each age group, suggesting the change of cognitive strategies to reach the goal. The ratio of pupil diameter change during task performance significantly correlated with the behavioral data, such as reaction time and correctness of performances. These results suggested that DSCSI would be potentially useful to improve the detection of early cognitive decline and optimize the intervention to delay cognitive decline.

In this study, we investigated factors affecting word order preference in the comprehension and production of OS-type languages such as Kaqchikel Mayan (a language spoken in Guatemala). We found in Kaqchikel: (1) The syntactically basic word order, VOS, induces less processing load than other grammatically possible word orders in this language such as SVO; (2) Despite that, SVO is more frequently used than VOS; (3) As in SO languages such as Japanese and English, in Kaqchikel, the most natural order that the speaker imposes on events when describing and reconstructing them nonverbally (= order of thought) is "Actor-Patinet", which corresponds to SO order in language. These results, taken together, show that the primary factor that determines processing load is different from the one that determines production frequencies, which calls for a new psycholinguistic theory that is equally applicable to SO and OS-type languages.
