    Abstract The iron and steel industries generate large amounts of unavoidable CO2 emissions as well as considerable quantities of slags. More than one-half of the emitted CO2 is produced in blast furnaces during ironmaking, and thus it is meaningful to use blast furnace slags to capture CO2 while addressing the byproducts and flue gas of ironmaking. Mineral carbonation of slags is a promising route to achieve carbon neutrality and effective slag utilization. To exploit slag more effectively and capture CO2 in flue gas, an in-depth investigation into the carbonation of blast furnace slags generated with different cooling methods was conducted. The effects of the solid–liquid ratio and introduced CO2 concentration on carbonation were determined. The CO2 uptake capacity of air-cooled slag (0.04 g/g) was greater than that of water-quenched slag. The CO2 uptake capacities of the two slags were comparable with those of slags in previous works, indicating the potential of the two slags for CO2 sequestration and utilization even with low-energy input and this fact suggests that this process is feasible.

    Abstract CO2 emissions contributing to global warming and waste related to energy generation using coal pose an issue in developing countries. Mineral carbonation (MC) of fly ash (FA) using acid mine drainage (AMD) can reduce CO2 and the negative environmental impact of FA including AMD from coal mining activity. The present study examined the direct carbonation (DC) of FA using pure water and AMD in a 600 mL autoclave pressure reactor. A preliminary study was conducted to observe the leaching behavior of FA in water and AMD. DC was conducted to determine the effect of solid‐to‐liquid ratio (0.2 and 0.5 g mL−1), stirring speed (100 and 400 rpm) and CO2 pressure (1–4 MPa) on the carbonation performance. The maximum calcium carbonate content in the carbonated FA was 4.33 wt% with a 60% conversion of calcium to CaCO3 for DC with pure water. The electricity required by the process was 18.9 kWh t−1‐CO2, corresponding to 0.019 t‐CO2 emitted t−1‐CO2 fixed in FA. DC using AMD was effective and the maximum CaCO3 content in FA was 6.68 wt%. This was due to the additional calcium content and enhanced calcium extraction provided by AMD. The actual CO2 uptake capacity was 29.4 g‐CO2 kg−1 fly ash. Studies on AMD as a reaction solvent for MC are few but can improve the carbonation performance of FA. Hence, the method can be viable for mining industries to mitigate negative environmental impacts and generate additional revenue through carbon credits.

    Abstract Desalination brine is a concentrated stream that is generated during the desalination process. Brine commonly has high salinity and TDS (total dissolved ions), which contains ions such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, SO42−, HCO3, PO43−, and some critical elements. Currently, the brine treatment mainly applies direct disposal, like surface water discharge, sewer discharge, deep‐well injection, and evaporation ponds. However, these methods can cause harm to marine ecosystems, soil, and groundwater. Therefore, brine can be regarded as a resource to be reutilized. This work then aims to highlight the novel developments of brine application. For example, Na, Ca, and Mg in brine can be employed for carbon capture and utilization with ammonia, amines, and alkaline substances. With slight adjustment, brine can also be directly used as irrigation water, aquaculture water, and the activation of biochar. Furthermore, brine holds a higher concentration of critical elements, which makes many countries and scholars start to conduct element extraction, reducing the amount of ore exploitation. At last, the major obstacles related to these advancements in sustainability, expenses, and technological aspects are outlined, and promising research trends of brine reutilization are also suggested.

Molten oxidation is a sustainable process for direct precipitation of magnetite from melt copper smelter slag because it involves zero or less energy input due to the exothermic reaction and free reducing carbon addition. During molten oxidation, magnetite precipitation occurred preferentially because of its intensive ferromagnetism and large crystal size, which enables downstream magnetic separation. Previous milligram-scale experiments conducted using an infrared furnace show that magnetite could be precipitated, while precipitation of hematite was limited under an atmosphere of 1 vol% oxygen. In this study, gram-scale experiments were conducted using an electric furnace to verify larger-scale molten oxidation at 1 vol% oxygen.

    Recovery of precious metals like Au and PGMs is essential in E-scrap recycling. Many processes have been proposed and used commercially. Of course, pretreatments using physical separation techniques when considering total recovery process but we focus only on hydrometallurgical processes in this review. PGM recovery processes are roughly categorized three types. One of main target resource is waste catalysis of ELV. Other target is printed circuit boards from E-scrap. Both resources are treated in pyro-metallurgical at first stage and high content PGM alloys are produced. Other attractive resource is high grade scrap from dental hospitals. Those high content PGM alloys are treated by various hydrometallurgical processes. A dissolution of high content PGM alloys is the first step in hydrometallurgical process. Point of this stage is how to oxidize the alloys. Aqua regia is very popular agent and other strong acids containing Cl gas and H2O2 also used. After dissolution processes depend on impurities. Various processes are introduced in separation of PGMs from other metals and between PGMs in this review.

    The electrolytic reduction process of mixed ilmenite (FeTiO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) to Fe-Ti intermetallic alloy in molten calcium chloride (CaCl2) electrolyte was studied. FeTiO3and TiO2powders were taken, which was then mixed, milled and pressed into 2.2 g of pellet and heat treated at 1000 °C for 2 h. The pellet was reduced electrochemically in a molten CaCl2electrolyte at 950°C and at a constant voltage of 3.0 V. The electrolyzed samples formed by the electrolytic reduction of the mixed FeTiO3and TiO2pellets were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron-probe microanalysis. From this analysis, it was confirmed that the mixed FeTiO3and TiO2pellets were successfully reduced to a dense Fe-Ti intermetallic alloy consisting of β-Ti (FeTi4) and FeTi phases.

    The production of FeTi intermetallic alloys from mixed oxide precursors using direct electrolytic reduction was studied. Fe2O3and TiO2powders were mixed in appropriate molar ratios, pressed into small pellets, and then heat treated at temperatures in the range 1000-1300°C. The pellet heat treated at 1000°C was electrolyzed in molten CaCl2at 950°C, using a graphite crucible as the anode and the oxide pellet as the cathode, at a potential of 3.0 V. The products of the electrolytic reduction of (Fe,Ti) oxide were examined by XRD, SEM and EPMA. It was found that the (Fe,Ti) oxide was reduced progressively from the outside to the inside of the pellet until the metallic state was achieved.

    酸化鉄(III)を用いたスコロダイト合成法では、溶液や前駆体、スコロダイト結晶間においてFe(II)とFe(III)の電子交換(RedOx反応)が進行しており、そのため生成するスコロダイト結晶中のFe(III)はヘマタイト由来だけではなく、その一部は溶液中のFe(II)由来となると考えられる。研究代表者らはFe(II)の一部をトレーサーである安定同位体鉄(54Fe)に置き換えて合成実験を行うことにより、スコロダイト結晶を構成するFe(III)の由来を定量的に評価することに成功している。本年度は、さらに、溶液のFe(II)濃度や温度、pHを変えて安定同位体鉄を添加したスコロダイト合成実験を行った。その結果、スコロダイト結晶を構成するFe(III)の約90%以上(最適条件下)が溶液中のFe(II)由来であり、ゲル状前駆体が残存する場合は溶液Fe(II)由来の比率が低下することが推測された。また、溶液中Fe(II)濃度が低い場合、スコロダイト結晶の溶液Fe(II)由来の比率も低下するが、これは過小評価の可能もあるのでさらに検討が必要であること、さらには溶液pHはスコロダイト結晶中の溶液Fe(II)由来の比率に影響を及ぼさないことが確認された。また、本合成法における溶液と固体酸化鉄(III)表面間で進行する鉄の酸化還元(RedOx)反応に関して、電気化学的手法による解析も行なった。本年度は、湿式法によりPt基板上にヘマタイト薄膜を形成した電極を作製することが可能となり、電極の自然浸漬電位と分極挙動を調査することで、カソード反応として酸化鉄(III)薄膜電極の還元反応が進行すること、ならびにアノード反応として溶液中Fe(II)の酸化によりスコロダイト結晶が生成することを確認した。さらに、反応パラメータとして溶液温度の影響について調査し、温度が高いほど反応速度が向上することが電気化学的測定により明らかとなった。

    まず、研究のための試料として、JIS規格に適合する日本の石炭飛灰サンプルを1種入手した。また、日本国外で発生する石炭飛灰についても入手のための交渉や必要な各種の手続きを進めた。入手した石炭飛灰試料について、物理化学的特性(化学組成、化合物形態、粒度、粒子外観等)の分析を行い、得られたデータから試料に対する理論的な二酸化炭素固定量の最大値の算出を行った。また、重金属含有率等の測定結果から潜在的な環境・健康リスクについて検討を行った。 石炭飛灰の炭酸化手法については、各種手法の中から対象とする炭酸化手法の選択を行った。また、炭酸化試験条件の決定を行った。また、試験のための実験装置系の構築と炭酸化試験手順の策定を行った。石炭飛灰の炭酸化試験を基本条件下で行い、炭酸化速度(二酸化炭素固定化速度)の定量的把握を行った。 植物生育試験については、試験場所や各種条件に関する検討を進め、試験の詳細計画を決定した。また、生育試験の対象とする植物種についても詳細な検討を進め、選定を行うとともに種子の入手を行った。また、予備試験として、温暖な条件下での植物の生育試験を実際に3か月以上の期間行い、試験の見込み期間や植物体量の定量的な状況の把握を行うことができた。 しかしながら、事情によって研究計画の中途で研究を終了することとなった。計画の中途での終了であったものの、穏やかな条件下においても石炭飛灰の炭酸化が可能であることを定量的に把握することができた。また、重金属の含有率の分析結果から炭酸化の際に注意すべき課題についても明確化することができた。

    A new type of process for separating metals in solution is proposed, and applied to a mixed solution of lithium and cobalt, as in the recycling of waste lithium-ion batteries. When a chelating agent, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), was added to a mixed solution of lithium ions and cobalt ions, almost all the cobalt ions were chelated by EDTA to form anions, whereas lithium ions were hardly chelated, at pH > 4. Electrodialysis of the feed solution was conducted using a three-cell-type electrodialysis system, with a unit consisting of two ion-exchange membranes and a bipolar membrane. Lithium was transported to the lithium recovery cell and cobalt was transported to the cobalt recovery cell, using an applied electric field. The selectivity for each metal in the recovery cell was about 99%. The separation system was also applied to Li-Co-Mn and In-Al systems, and its separation performance was studied. e

    In this study, vapor pressures and thermodynamic data such as standard sublimation enthalpy for bromide metals were obtained using a Knudsen cell apparatus, assuming to a metal recycling process from waste electric and electronic equipment by a pyro-metallurgical process. Vapor pressures of copper bromide, zinc bromide and lead bromide were measured, and their vapor species were identified using a mass spectrometry. Thermal decompositions of brominated flame retardant (BFR) plastics and simultaneous brominating reactions of mixed metal compounds were investigated using a small electric furnace. In the experiments, BFRs such as TBBPA and plastics containing BFR were mixed with metal compounds or electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. The thermal decomposition mechanisms of BFRs and bromide vaporization behaviors of metal compounds were investigated in the experiments.

    エネルギー消費の少ない岩石を用いた二酸化炭素固定、脱硫プロセスを確立することを研究目的とした。固定媒体として着目するのは建築材料として大量に使用されているコンクリート中の廃セメント成分である。廃セメントは細かく粉砕してプロセスに使用した。前年度の二酸化炭素固定を目的とした研究に続き、本年度は、廃セメント微粉を用いた新規な脱硫技術開発を目的とした研究を行った。実験室レベルでの脱硫試験を行い、脱硫効率に及ぼす前処理条件の影響、粒度の影響、温度の影響などを明らかにした。既存の脱硫剤である炭酸カルシウムや水酸化カルシウムについても同様の測定を行い、その結果を廃セメントのものと比較し、脱硫速度に及ぼす廃セメント組成の影響を考察した。既存の脱硫剤と比較し、廃セメントを用いる場合には乾燥条件下での脱硫速度は数分の一程度に留まった。しかしながら、カルシウムの利用率はほぼ同等であった。これらの試験結果により様々な条件下での脱硫速度を予測し、評価することが可能となった。また、実験結果に基づき、乾式の流動層脱硫プラントのプロセス設計を行い、実プラントでの脱硫効果の概算を行った。その結果、提案するプロセスによる脱硫技術の実現可能性の高いことが示唆された。提案するプロセスは今後その処理が問題とされるコンクリート塊を利用して二酸化炭素の固定及び脱硫を行うものであり、本結果の社会的な意義は非常に大きいと考えられる。
