Rumen fermentation shapes metabolic and endocrine functions. However, its association with stress behavior in ruminants remains underexplored. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of feed energy and protein levels in physiological and behavioral stress responses by altering rumen production in Suffolk sheep. Seventeen Suffolk sheep were fed high-energy (HE), high-protein (HP), or control feeds. Behavior in the open field test (OFT) was quantified as the latency to enter the field, number of squares entered, frequency of bleats, sniffing, and latency to bleat. Moreover, rumen volatile fatty acid, ammonia, plasma ammonia, cortisol, and aldosterone levels were measured. The HE group was characterized by a lower acetate-to-propionate (A/P) ratio than that in the control. Similarly, HP sheep were characterized by high ruminal and plasma ammonia levels. In the OFT, both the HE and HP groups bleated and sniffed more frequently than the control group; the number of squares entered was greater in the HP group than in the control group. Plasma cortisol and aldosterone levels did not differ according to the feed. Furthermore, plasma ammonia levels correlated with a greater number of squares entered ( ρ  = 0.78), whereas a lower A/P ratio correlated with lower cortisol levels ( ρ  = −0.56). Our findings suggest that feed composition can modulate stress responses, particularly stress-related behaviors, in sheep. This study provides preliminary evidence that feed-induced changes in rumen metabolites, particularly ammonia, are associated with behavioral stress responses in sheep. These findings may help inform feeding strategies that consider animal welfare.

This study investigated the relationship between rumen fermentation, stress-related hormones, and behavior in sheep with the aim of providing insights for improving animal welfare and feed management practices. Eight lambs were assigned to either a high concentration or control group. Blood samples were collected for hormone analysis, and an open field test was conducted to observe behavioral stress responses. The results showed that diet composition may affect the behavior of ruminants in response to stressors and novel situations, as evidenced by the higher number of escape attempts in the high-concentration group. In addition, analyses of individual volatile fatty acids (VFAs) showed a significant positive correlation between the acetic acid/propionic acid ratio and sniffing behavior of the novel object (p < 0.05, ρ = −0.414). These findings have important implications for animal welfare and feed management practices. Overall, this study provides insights into the potential impact of diet composition on the behavior of ruminants in response to stressors and novel situations, highlighting the importance of improving animal welfare through feed management practices. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the mechanisms underlying the complex relationship between rumen fermentation, stress-related hormones, and behavior in ruminant animals.

Objective: Stroking calves during the postnatal period could effectively improve humancalf relationships. The objective of this study is to examine how daily calf stroking frequency during the postnatal period affects the establishment of human-calf relationships. Methods: Six calves were stroked by a trainer for 6 minutes once daily for 5 days after birth (D1). Six calves were stroked by a trainer for 3 minutes twice daily for 5 days after birth (D2). A further four calves were stared at but not stroked as the control group. The overall stroking or staring duration was the same for all groups, at 6 min/d and 30 min over 5 days. The tests for reactions to the stationary trainer in an unfamiliar environment and avoidance distance measurements for an approaching trainer were conducted at 1 month and 3 months after the treatment. Results: Calves in both stroking groups approached significantly closer to the stationary trainer, vocalized less, and looked at the trainer shorter than the control group at 1 month. However, at 3 months, there was no significant difference between the D1 and the control group, whereas the D2 approached significantly closer to the trainer and vocalized less, and looked at the trainer for a shorter time than the control group. For the avoidance distance, the trainer could approach closer to both stroking groups than the control at 1 month, however, there was no difference among groups at 3 months. Conclusion: Our results suggested that the difference in the calf stroking procedure affected the established human-calf relationships, even though the total stroking duration was the same for all stroked calves. It is likely to be more effective to stroke more frequently than intensively when the aim is to establish better human-calf relationships within limited labor time.

To investigate relationships between foraging height of cattle and vertical distribution of leaf mass in native grasses, mass of foliage, density of leaves (as frequency of occurrence) and proportion of bites by beef steers in individual layers (every 20cm height from the ground) of canopies were measured for Miscanthus sinensis, Sasa palmata, Pleioblastus chino and Calamagrostis arundinacea in June-July (summer) and September (autumn). Vertical distribution of foliage mass and leaf density well described the characteristics of aboveground structure in native grasses in each season. Leaf mass in an individual layer was significantly related to leaf density of the layer (P<0.05) in all grass species, showing the effectiveness of measuring the frequency of occurrence of leaves for estimating leaf mass in native grasses. In both seasons, correlation analysis showed that steers took more bites from layers with higher leaf densities. However, the significant relationship between the proportion of bites and leaf density was relatively low in the early period in autumn. It was suggested that, in autumn, other factors such as quality of foliage affected the foraging height of grazing cattle.

Sward height, height and density of inflorescence and frequency of defoliation in four monocotyledons and two forbs dominating in the sown pasture, and frequency of appearance, fructification and the occurrence of defoliation of plant species in the native pasture were measured immediately before and after movements of a herd from late spring to mid-autumn. Plant species germinating from cattle feces was also identified by applying water-diluted feces to pots filled with soil. In the sown pasture, the six dominant species fructified in late spring to early summer, when the frequency of defoliation was high (10-97%). During this season, the maximum of 87.8 seedlings/100g feces germinated, including 74.6% of Carex albata seedlings. On the other hand, in the native pasture, the number of seedlings germinating from feces was low (max. 19.1/100g feces). These results indicate that seeds of C. albata are mainly dispersed through defecation of cattle from the sown pasture into the native pasture. However, considerably low coverage of C. albata in the native pasture suggests difficulties for this species to germinate and/or establish under the actual conditions of feces on the pastures.

The foraging behavior of beef cattle was investigated at a feeding station (FS) scale in a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Fliigge) pasture with the goal of obtaining detailed information on the foraging responses of cattle to seasons and progressive grazing. Measurements were carried out 3 times daily (0900, 1200 and 1500 h) during 3 seasonal grazing periods (late spring, late summer and mid-autumn; 3-4 days each). The rate of visits to FSs (VR; the number of FSs visited by an animal per unit of time) was low in spring and high in summer. It fell from initially high levels over the course of autumn grazing. Despite the seasonal change in VR, cows moved between FSs mostly with one step throughout the year, indicating that VR was affected mainly by the duration of time spent at individual FSs. In fact, VR showed a highly negative correlation with number of bites (bites/FS) and residence time (sec/FS) at a FS (both P<0.001). Biting rates (bites/min) were relatively stable over seasons, showing the highest values in autumn. Based on these results and previous reports, responses of foraging behavior variables to heterogeneous vegetation were discussed with respect to spatial distribution of herbage availability and seasonal changes in the quantity-quality relationships of herbage in the pasture.

Herbage production and utilization in a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) pasture rotationally grazed by breeding Japanese Black cows were quantified in a cow-calf system in coastal Miyazaki, southwestern Japan. Herbage mass (range = 20-421g DM/m^2) increased during the pre-grazing season (mid-April to late May), and thereafter repeated a decrease during a grazing period and an increase during a rest period in the grazing season (late May to late October). Dry matter digestibility and nitrogen concentration of herbage (range = 471-593 and 13-26g/kg DM, respectively) decreased from May to October. The rate of herbage production (range = 2.4-8.8g DM/m^2/day) tended to peak in early July, with the potential rate (range = 3.0-13.7g DM/m^2/day) being high until early July and decreasing thereafter. The rate of herbage consumption and dry matter intake by cows ranged from 19.9-59.2g DM/m^2, day and 14.8-12.9g DM/ kg LW/day, respectively. Total herbage production and consumption from mid-April to late October (≈growing season) were respectively 1025-1033 (mean = 1029) g DM/m^2 and 892-941 (mean = 916) g DM, m^2, with degrees of utilization of 0.86-0.92 (mean = 0.89). The study shows that a bahiagrass pasture, which is intermediately productive among sown pastures in Japan, is highly utilized by breeding Japanese Black cows, providing sufficient digestible energy and protein.

Spatial distribution of herbage consumption (rate of defoliation and utilization) by cattle was monitored two-dimensionally in a bahiagrass pasture (1.06 ha) by quantifying changes in herbage mass (HM) during 3 grazing periods (May, August and October). HM was estimated using an electronic capacitance probe for 1464 permanent positions (50cm×50cm) whose centers formed 1.5m×1.5m grids in the central 90m×34.5m area of the pasture. The two-dimensional chartings well illustrated the characteristics of the spatial distributions of herbage consumption, highlighting which positions of the pasture were heavily grazed (utilized) or lightly grazed (utilized) by animals. Finer-scale data which were continuously taken at 451 positions (20cm×20cm) along two permanent line transects (90m) to examine the appropriateness of the grid size showed similar distributions of HM and herbage consumption to data from the two-dimensional monitoring. Despite this similarity, patch-gap analysis with the finerscale data detected smaller common patch sizes in herbage consumption than the grid interval in the measurement area (1.5m) in October. It was concluded that a grid size of <1.5m is needed to monitor herbage consumption of grazing animals at a small-patch scale.

Grassland Science 47, 453-459. Spatial distribution of herbage mass (HM) was monitored two-dimensionally during the grazing season (from May to November) in a bahiagrass pasture (1.06ha) rotationally grazed by cattle. An electronic capacitance probe was used to estimate HM in 1464 permanent positions (50×50cm) whose centers formed 1.5×1.5m grids in the central 90×34.5m area of the pasture. The two-dimensional charting of HM showed almost stable spatial patterns throughout the grazing season, with some patches of high HM appearing and disappearing. The development of new patches was considered to be partly due to the avoidance of areas affected by newly deposited dung pats, and the extinction of patches to the grazing down of areas where dung pats were disappearing or had disappeared. Spatial pattern analysis proposed by DALE and MACISAAC (1989) for HM along a 90m permanent line transect showed larger patch and gap sizes than the grid interval in the two-dimensional monitoring (1.5m). It is concluded that the technique is useful for monitoring the spatial pattern of HM, herbage production and consumption, and for relating consumption to the ingestive behavior of grazing animals.

To investigate the effects of foaming in the rumen with white clover ingestion on ruminal digestion and nutrient flow, two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 was carried out with 3x3 random block design using three rams and three treatments;white clover sole feeding (WC), white clover sole feeding with dosing a non-ionic surfactant (Ruminon^【○!R】 4ml/day) (WR), and white clover and orchardgrass (1:1 on a dry matter basis) feeding (WO). Voluntary intake, foam stability of ruminal fluid, ruminal fermentation characteristics, ruminal dilution rate and in situ degradability were examined. In experiment 2, non-am monia nitrogen (NAN) and RNA entering duodenum was measured by using two rams with duodenal cannula under WC and WR treatments. The treatments did not differ in intake of dry matter and nitrogen (P>0.1). The foam stability of ruminal fluid greatly decreased (P<0.05) by dosing of a surfactant throughout the experiment. The propionate proportion of total volatile fatty acids was higher (P<0.05) in WR and butyrate proportion and protozoal density were higher (P<0.05) in WC than other treatments. Furthermore, both duodenal NAN and RNA per ingested nitrogen were greater in WC than in WR. Foam formation in the rumen indicated the beneficial effect on nutrient utilization in ruminants owing to the increase of bypass protein and of microbial flow to the duodenum.

To investigate the effects of foaming in the rumen with white clover ingestion on the microbial digestion of sheep, an experiment using three treatments - white clover sole feeding (WC), white clover sole feeding with an antifoaming agent (Ruminon^<【○!R】> 5ml/day) (WR), and white clover and orchardgrass (1:1 on a dry matter basis) feeding (WO) - was carried out with 3×3 Latin square design using three lambs. Ruminal fermentation was investigated in 2, 4, 6 and 12 hr after feeding under restricted feeding (30 g of dry matter/kg of body weight/day, 08:00 and 29:00). The foam stability of ruminal fluid was remarkably high 2 and 4hr after feeding in WC, while the ruminal fluid in WR formed little foam at any stage after feeding. Protozoal density of ruminal fluid was significantly small in WR compared with that in WC and WO (P<0.05), particularly 4 and 6 hr after feeding. Total volatile fatty acid concentration was 23-26 m mol/l higher in WR than in WC and WO 2hr after feeding. Scanning electron micrographs revealed a large bacterial population on leaf particles and extensive disintegration of leaf tissues in WR compared with that in WC.

To investigate the ruminal characteristics under grazing white clover, three fistulated Suffolk and Corriedale crossbred wether sheep (mean body weight 48.0kg) were kept in metabolic cages, and foam stability of ruminal fluid, volatile fatty acid (VFA) and ammonia-nitrogen (NH_3-N) concentrations, protozoal density and ruminal contraction were measured with the course of time after feeding fresh white clover (Trifolium repens L.) or orchardgrass (Dactilis glomerata L.) at the same level of dry matter intake (30g dry matter/kg body weight/day). The foam stability of ruminal fluid was markedly high in 2hr after feeding of white clover compared with orchardgrass. Total VFA, acetate, propionate (P<0.05) and NH_3-N (P<0.001) of ruminal fluid in 2, 4, 6hr after feeding were significantly higher in white clover than in orchardgrass. The frequencies and amplitudes of ruminal contraction were greater and slightly smaller, respectively, in white clover feeding than in orchardgrass feeding. Ruminal properties such as foam stability of ruminal fluid, ruminal fermentation and ruminal motility in white clover feeding were largely different from those in orchardgrass feeding in both respects of the level and the changing pattern with the course of time after feeding.

The induction of ruminant bloat is usually caused by the ingestion of too much clover on mixed sward. This study was to estimate grazing pattern of white clover on the clover/grass mixed sward by ruminants. Eating pattern of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) was investigated using Suffolk and Corriedale crossbred wether sheep (mean BW 38.0kg) housed in the metabolic cages. Voluntary intake of each herbage was measured with the elapse of time by fixed feeding (07 : 00 and 17 : 00) (Exp. 1) or by free feeding (Exp. 2). Furthermore, to examine grazing pattern of white clover on the pure stand, the voluntary intake in sole feeding of white clover was compared with the voluntary intake in white clover and orchardgrass feeding (Exp. 3). In fixed feeding, daily intake of white clover was larger than that of orchardgrass (white clover ; 6.44 kg/head, orchardgrass ; 1.28 kg/head, P<0.001). The intake of white clover was markedly high for first 20 minutes after feeding and decreased with the elapse of time, whereas the intake of orchardgrass was increased gradually. In free feeding, daily intake of white clover was about equal to that of orchardgrass (white clover ; 4.99 kg / head, orchardgrass ; 4.93 kg/head, P>0.1). Although intake rate (g/min) of white clover was higher than that of orchardgrass immediately after feeding, the rate decreased by 90 minutes, thereafter both herbages were eaten with a certain rate. It was suggested that, on the white clover/grass mixed sward, a large amount of white clover might be grazed by animals at a good appetite such as immediately after changing paddock or setting up the grazing, but with the elapse of the time of grazing, the intake of coexisting grass by ruminants increase. The difference was not observed between the total daily intake of herbage in white clover sole feeding (WC) and that in white clover and orchardgrass feeding (WC + OG) (WC ; 10.54 kg/head, WC + OG ; 10.10 kg/head, P>0.1) (Exp. 3), even though the digestibility of white clover is higher than that of orchardgrass. From these experiments, white clover appears to regulate the ingesting of white clover itself by ruminants under a stationary state of appetite as long term grazing. The clarification of the mechanism on the regulation is expected.

To develop the novel grazing system both to contribute to conservation of biodiversity and to improve animal production and welfare, the relationships between plant species diversity and nutrient utilization was investigated in four sites in the eastern Asia (Miyagi, Gifu, Hiroshima and Korea). 1. The highly precise evaluation technique to estimate herbage mass and coverage of grazing pasture was established by using aboveground spectral measurements and UAV aerial imaging. 2. The “bite-coding grid” of goats and cattle was established, and by using it, foraging manner of animals were characterized in species-rich grazing pastures. 3. Some forbs and tree leaves contain much minerals and amino acids than grasses, and they contribute to improve digestion of plants in the rumen and nutrient balance in the blood.

Plant characteristics of view, smell, tactile sense and taste function as information when herbivore livestock recognizes plants as feed. Herbivore livestock selected plant species by verifying the information based on its past experiences, and recognized morphological characteristics, quality and quantity in diverse vegetation. Particularly, herbivores tended to strongly prefer feeds with large bite size and sweet taste. Associative learning of these factors is effective to control foraging behavior of herbivore livestock in diverse vegetation.

The purpose of the present study is to 1) investigate the lean beef production, forage utilization, cold region adaptability, and feeding and management for the existent breed of beef and dual-purpose cattle in China, South Korea, France, Switzerland and our country, to 2) select the excellent candidates utilizable as standard cattle in the northeastern area of Asia and to 3) form the academic basis on the exploitation of germplasm stock of the expected beef cattle in the area and the sustainable increasing beef production. In the study duration for 2 years, the academic investigation was carried out on Hanwoo (Korean Native Cattle), 41 kinds of Chinese Yellow Cattle and 3 kinds of the improved crosses, Steppe Red, Xinjiang brown and Shanhe cattle in China, Belgian Blue, Salers, Limousine, Charolais and Blonde d'Aquitaine in France, Swiss Brown in Switzerland and Japanese shorthorn cattle in Japan. The results were summarized as follows. 1) Hanwoo was improved and selected on the basis of marbling score as the principal marker. The breed was smaller size and the carcass yield was about 60%. From the results, Hanwoo was not expected as a candidate as standard cattle in the northeastern area of Asia. 2) In China, Chinese Yellow Cattle are dual-purpose cattle, smaller size and less carcass yield although some cattle such as Qinchuan, Nanyang and Yanbian are excellent for forage utilization, cold region adaptability, and feeding and management. Steppe Red was improved in northern China and was good shape for lean beef production although the breed is still dual-purpose cattle. Therefore, Steppe Red was selected as an expected candidate of standard cattle in the northeastern area of Asia. 3) Belgian Blue, Limousine, Charolais and Blonde d'Aquitaine in France are large sized beef cattle and have excellent carcass yield. However, the anxiety for less environmental loading and environmental adaptability in the northeastern Asia still remains on their breeds. On the other hand, Salers is excellent for lean beef production, forage utilization and grazing elasticity although the breed is dual-purpose cattle. From the results, Salers was selected as an expected candidate of standard cattle in the northeastern area of Asia. 4) It has been recognized in our previous study that Japanese shorthorn cattle is expected as a candidate of standard cattle in northeastern Asia. In the present investigation, the lean beef production and forage utilization was confirmed to well exercise during the anniversary grazing. To develop the standard cattle in the northeastern area of Asia from the entire results, it is need to improve the crossbred between Japanese shorthorn cattle and Steppe Red, and the crossbred between Japanese shorthorn cattle and Salers and tobreed their improved crossbred each other.

    More details Close
