Abstract In the field, locally applied fluid pressure can initiate fault slip, which may expand unstably over a wide area under certain conditions, generating elastic waves and inducing earthquakes. Therefore, examining the unstable expansion of the initial slip is important. However, reproducing this process in laboratory experiments, such as triaxial loading tests on small cylindrical specimens with inclined faults, is challenging. To achieve this, we prepared a sub-meter-scale cubic specimen, which was separated into two triangular prisms by a model fault. The specimen was subjected to biaxial compression of different magnitudes. A 2D array of strain gauges was embedded beneath the fault plane to measure the changes in shear strain with fault slip driven by fluid injection. Based on the experimental results, we discussed the features of the injection-induced fault slips that lead to earthquakes. The strain increased locally around the edge of the fault slipping area by approximately 10 με, which is equivalent to a shear stress of ~ 0.1 MPa. The fault slipping area first expanded gradually and then unstably beyond the fluid invasion area approximately 3 s after the slip was initiated. The unstable expansion of initial slips was suppressed by reducing the initial shear stress on the fault by 0.3 MPa. In this case, the initial shear stress was possibly too small for additional stress to accumulate at the edge of the fault-slipping area to overcome the static frictional strength of the fault. Our experimental study explicitly confirms that injection-induced aseismic slip can outpace the fluid migration front, finally leading up to a runaway rupture. It also confirms that the level of initial shear stress is important in controlling the rupture size under fluid injection. Graphical Abstract

Gold mines in South Africa have mining depths of up to ~4 km. Mining in such depths under high-stress conditions induces many earthquakes, which pose serious hazard to mine workers. To mitigate seismic risks and to understand the role ofmicroearthquakes in earthquake generation processes, we have conducted ultra-sensitive seismic observations, which allow acoustic emissions (AEs) to be detected down to MW −5 (typical rupture size ~ several centimeters), at two South African gold mines. We have found out various modes of AE activity previously unknown from conventional seismic networks (detectability only down to MW ~ −1): AE activity before and after an MW 2.2 earthquake, AE activity likely reflecting damage accumulation processes ahead of an advancing mining front, and AEs occurring steadily along geological faults. This paper summarizes these findings, which received the fiscal 2016 frontier award of the Japanese Society for Rock Mechanics (JSRM).

Experimental sites with potential earthquakes up to M ∼ 3 in coming few years are known beforehand from mining schedule at 2-3 km depths in South African gold mines, which allows us to deploy various borehole instruments including Ishii strainmeters, geophones, accelerometers and AE sensors. Deployment of these wide-dynamic-range and high-resolution observations in the past 15 years has led to many findings about the earthquake rupture and its preparation stage. High-sampling seismograms obtained at close proximity of M > 1 earthquakes have demonstrated similarities of these earthquakes to natural, greater earthquakes in many aspects, including stress drop, energy efficiency, and complexity of rupture propagation. Some of larger mine earthquakes are preceded by perceivable abnormal seismicity. However, no immediate precursors for earthquakes with M ∼ 2 were observed by our high-resolution strain and AE sensors installed within the dimension of mainshock rupture. In contrast, aseismic strain-step events that we had recently discovered were sometimes preceded by further slower forerunners. Ongoing projects bring in novel technologies such as field-scale AE monitoring and fast-response strainmeters, and novel targets including mines being flooded for closing operation.

A two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulation of seismic cycles on the plate boundary in a subduction zone is performed based on a rate- and state-dependent friction law to obtain insight into complicated cycle of interplate earthquakes off Miyagi Prefecture and to investigate possible precursory sliding behavior. Assuming that the complexity of seismic cycle such as the off Miyagi Prefecture Earthquake is mainly due to the heterogeneity of frictional properties, we divide the plate boundary into five segments along dip direction: three frictionally stable segments and two (shallower and deeper) seismogenic segments are placed alternately. From many trial simulation results, we find that the frictional parameters (b-a)and dc in the deeper seismogenic segment should be smaller than those in the shallower segment in order to generate earthquakes in the deeper segment more frequently than in the shallower segment. The simulation results show that preseismic, coseismic, and postseismic slip in a seismogenic segment tends to become larger when it occurs just after the earthquake in the other seismogenic segment, because the previous earthquake in the other seismogenic segment keeps on forward slip through the intermediate aseismic segment. We also find that the stress rate in the down-dip direction in the vicinity of the lower edge of the deeper seismogenic segment is compressional for the period of about one year prior to the occurrence of the earthquake in the segment while it is tensional prior to the event in the shallower segment. This result suggests that seismic activity change in a slab can be a clue to the intermediate-term prediction of large interplate earthquakes.

It is difficult to mine-widely, routinely measure absolute stress in the highly stressed rock mass in deep mines in the world because the drilled holes or cores are damaged during and immediately following the drilling. We evaluate the use of the Diametrical Core Deformation Analysis (DCDA) method, developed by Funato and Ito. The method can evaluate non-destructively the absolute differential stresses and measurement errors in the planes orthogonal to the core axes by precisely measuring the ellipticity of the core section orthogonal to the borehole axis. The five readings required to evaluate a single core take only about ten minutes to make. The measurement system is compact enough for a single regular courier parcel or flight check-in luggage. Absolute differential stresses were determined for thirty-five core samples from fourteen holes in different directions in the highly stressed rock mass in a South African gold mine. We were able to constrain an average 3D differential stress field, consistent with the 3D stress field measured in-situ with an overcoring method, with the maximum principal stress larger than 100 MPa, with a root mean square of residuals of several MPa. Interestingly, the results represent relaxation in shear stress near the fault intersected by the boreholes. The measurements require a core diameter larger than ca. 40 mm, and a core is longer than ca. 10 cm. The method assumes that there is no significant inelastic deformation and that the rock is isotropic.

We review previous numerical simulations of interaction between fault segments on a plate interface based on a friction law, comparing combined events with single events on the amount of coseismic and preseismic slip. We find out the characteristics of combined event: (i) In case of multiple fault segments nearby enough to have short delay time of rupturing, coseismic slip is increased nearly in proportion to the size of combined fault segment while preseismic slip is almost the same as single event. (ii) In case of those distant enough to have long delay time of rupturing, seismic moment magnitude is almost the same as single event while preseismic slip is significantly increased by several tens percents. We discuss several combined earthquakes in Sumatra with short-term and long-term delay times and the possibility of megathrust earthquakes following the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake occurring off Kanto and off Sanriku with long-term delay time in the near future. We point out that seafloor observation of crustal deformation and seismicity off Kanto, Sanriku and Tokachi is necessary to enhance the detection ability of preseismic changes.

We developed a strain meter that can be installed close to a crater of active volcano. The strain meter consists of strain gages and stainless bar, and it is designed by using FEM numerical code to examine the sensitivity. We installed the strain meter at a depth of 20 m of the volcano flank of Sakurajima where volcanic explosions introducing volcano deformation are often observed. The strain signals are continuously recorded with a sampling frequency of 100 Hz at the site. The volcano deformations with a time scale of a few hours were not well observed with a good signal to noise ratio, but short-period seismic waves with amplitudes of about 0.5 micro strain are well recorded.

We advanced the understanding of the deformation process before and after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake and the generation processes of the large inland earthquakes by reproducing them through numerical modeling. (1) We analyzed and modeled postseismic deformation of the Tohoku-oki earthquake, and reproduced the forearc subsidence in around 100 years before the earthquake and the stress field before and after the earthquake. (2) We analyzed the crustal deformation data of the Japanese island arc, and clarified the strain concentration zones and major fault movements in southwest Japan. We also clarified that the strain concentration process in each region of the Japanese island is controlled by thermal anomaly, crustal fluid, and geological structure. (3) We succeeded in modeling the earthquake cycle by considering fault rheology such as brittle-ductile transition and pressure solution creep, and in reproducing the dynamic rupture propagation of the recent large inland earthquakes.

Normal stress dependencies of evolution of the rate effect on frictional strength and AE activity were examined by laboratory experiments using granite specimens. For cumulative sliding distance smaller than a critical distance, the rate dependency of friction is positive, while that of the b-value of AE activity is negative. When the cumulative sliding distance reaches the critical distance, the rate dependence of friction turns to negative. At the same time, the rate dependence of the b-value of AE activity becomes negative. Higher the normal stress, the critical distance becomes smaller. The evolutions of rate effects on the friction and the AE activity can be approximated by an exponential function to estimate a characteristic sliding distance required to reach a steady state. The characteristic sliding distance is inversely proportional to the normal stress, suggesting a work done by external force to evolve fault surface topographies by wear is independent of the normal stress.

Drilling > 80 holes with a total length > 2.8 km in earthquake prone areas, conducted were multi-disciplinary studies at sites (at depths > 3km or with equivalent stress) at six South African gold mines in ever-larger scale. Microfracturing associated with a magnitude (M) 2 event as well as those in highly stressed rock mass at 1.0km depth at another mine were finely delineated and seismologically analyzed in ever-greater detail. A hole intersecting an M2 hypocenter allowed the constraint of stress. A technology was introduced that allowed to measure stress at ever-larger depths or in ever-larger magnitudes, which calibrated elastic stress modelling. Pre-seismic strain change was observed for a M0 event, which was one of the other outcomes that can be obtained only from our monitoring at the closest proximity of hypocenters.

A dense, 3-dimensional array of AE sensors with about 100-m spread was deployed in the rock mass near a mining stope at about 1-km depth in a South African gold mine. The area contained multiple geological faults. A huge number of microfractures were occurring almost exclusively either in the great proximity of fracture planes of geological faults or in the zone of high-differential stress ahead of the mining front. Relative abundance of small events was to a similar extent to natural earthquakes in the latter, but was extreme in the former. It has turned out that the latter population consists of several, discrete, large-scale (a few tens of meters), tabular clusters of a few meters thickness. Laboratory tests of rock samples from the mine showed that weak foliation affects the microfractures. Also, complexities of microfracture activity and the eventual through-going fracture were both shown to be affected by the orientation of the foliation with respect to the principal stress axis.

The main purpose of this project was to look for a temperature anomaly associated with faulting from the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake (Mw7.6) on the Chelungpu fault. Any temperature change across the fault would give an estimate of the frictional heat produced at the time of the earthquake. Determining the level of frictional heat adds valuable information to a long-standing problem in seismology about the absolute stress levels and strengths of faults during large earthquakes. For the temperature measurements we able to use the Taiwan Chelungpu fault Drilling Project (TCDP) borehole which penetrated the fault at a depth of about 1100 meters in a region of large slip. Using a high-resolution borehole instrument developed in this project, we measured continuous temperature profiles in the borehole in September 2005. The results, which were obtained 6 years after the earthquake, showed a small increase of temperature across the fault. This small temperature signal is interpreted as the residual frictional heat from the time of the earthquake. The modeled temperature data showed that a shear stress level of 0.8 to 1.7 MPa on the fault during the rupture. This value corresponds to an apparent coefficient of friction of 0.08 to 0.1, which is a very low value. If this is a representative value for the area of large faulting, significant low friction mechanisms are needed to explain the faulting. Material properties, such as variations in heat conductivity, may affect the interpretation of the temperature signal. Investigating these effects is the purpose of a follow-up project. Other studies in the project investigated physical properties of the fault zone from the borehole cores and a water pumping test was done to determine the fluid flow properties.

In this research, we have been aiming to analyze details of lock and slip on the plate boundary under the Pacific Ocean in NE Japan and to understand the generation mechanism of interplate earthquakes. The main research contents are: 1. analysis of repeating earthquakes, 2. analysis of source process of medium & large earthquakes based on broadband seismic waveform data, 3. GPS data analysis, 4. research on the property of asperities by using numerical simulation. According to the result of 1. analysis of repeating earthquakes, we successfully estimated the time variation of interplate slips around the rupture zone of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, by identifying the repeating earthquakes in all parts of the plate boundary under the Pacific Ocean from Hokkaido to NE Japan. As for the 2. analysis of source process based on seismic waveform data, we showed that the rupture area of Miyagi-oki earthquake (M7.2) on Aug. 16, 2005 is overlapped with the southeastern part of the rupture area of the 1978 Miyagi-oki earthquake. So, this means that the asperities of the 1978 earthquake located in the north and west part are left unruptured; our research pointed out the importance of continued and careful observation on this area. Moreover, we conducted reanalysis of aftershocks of Miyagi-oki earthquakes with magnitude >7 in 1930s, and found out that three asperities could have slipped separately, in three times, in the case of 1930s' Miyagi-oki earthquakes. With 3. GPS analysis, after 2005 Miyagi-oki earthquake, we detected the after slip which spread toward south of the rupture area of the event. This observation result corresponds with the result of seismic-waveform inversion analysis; the northern and western asperities are left unruptured. The result of 4. numerical simulation analysis shows that, in order to explain the propagation velocity of the after slip observed in the deep plate boundary close to land, pore pressure around the plate boundary should be extremely large. On the other hand, in order to explain the propagation velocity of the after slip observed in the shallow plate boundary close to the trench, large pore pressure is not necessary like in the case above. These results suggest the depth variation in the amount of water supplied to the plate boundary, which was caused by dehydration reaction, or the depth variation in coefficient of permeability around the plate boundary. As mentioned above, through this research, we have achieved substantial results to enhance understanding of the generation mechanism of interplate earthquakes.
