Abstract Talmy (1985. Lexicalization patterns: Semantic structure in lexical form. In Timothy Shopen (ed.), Language typology and syntactic description, vol. 3, 36–149. Cambridge, MA: Cambridge University Press, 1991. Path to realization: A typology of event conflation. In Proceedings of the 17th annual meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society, 480–519. Berkeley Linguistics Society) introduced the concept of event conflation: that two micro events can be conceptualized and expressed as a single macro event. He proposed a linguistic typology based on ths concept, and second language acquisition studies have suggested that learners whose first language is of a different type than their target language have extra difficulty interpreting and reproducing event conflation in the target language phrases. However, the degree to which using conflation patterns similar to the first language in one’s target language impedes communication is still unclear. To observe the effect of first and second language type mismatches on communicative ability, data was taken from the independent writing task of the TOEFL iBT® Public Use Dataset and the Event Conflation Finder was used to extract and analyze instances of path encoding. Framing tendencies and correlations between these tendencies and rater scores were compared amongst learners whose first languages are often argued to be one of the three major types: satellite-framed, mixed-framed, and verb-framed. I found that only learners with verb-framed first languages exhibited a clear pattern of correlation between typical satellite-framing patterns and rater scores, suggesting that satellite-framed expressions are more difficult for learners whose first language is verb-framed.

<title>Abstract</title> This study presents the results of an experimental investigation into the L2 acquisition of the core-peripheral distinction in the syntax of split intransitivity by L1 Mandarin EFL learners to verify whether or not their L2 acquisition is lexically constrained by the Split Intransitivity Hierarchy, which predicts that core verbs have primacy in both L1 and L2 acquisition over peripheral ones (<xref>Sorace, 2000</xref>, <xref>2004</xref>, <xref>2011</xref>). Two diagnostics of English split intransitivity, the prenominal past participles (PPPs) and the for hours constructions, were used to test native English speakers and Mandarin EFL learners’ gradient acceptability with respect to core-peripheral verb classes. The results of an acceptability judgment test show that both native speakers and nonnative speakers are sensitive to the core-peripheral distinction in the two diagnostics, and EFL learners exhibit a native-like sensitivity to core unaccusatives in PPPs but not in the for hours constructions. The results confirm that the core-peripheral distinction can be accounted for neither by L1 transfer nor L2 input, which suggests for the behavior is due to direct access to semantic universals in the L2 acquisition of split intransitivity syntax.

<p>This study reports the results of a non-linguistic categorization task given to L1 Japanese and L1 English speakers. The task was designed to determine if only L1 affects focus (and subsequently categorization) in motion events, or if there are other factors, namely the presence of boundary crossing or the noticeability of the manner of motion, which universally affect focus. The results of a binomial logistic regression analysis of speaker's categorization patterns revealed that L1 type and the presence of some manner types (causative, speed, default) influenced participants' categorization decisions, but whether or not boundary crossing or expressive manner was depicted did not. They also show that both groups of speakers tended to categorize manner over path when manner types at the end of the manner noticeability hierarchy (i.e. causative and default) were included in the test item, indicating that there is a tendency to focus more on certain types of manner, regardless of L1 type. Based on these results, the interpretation of some previous studies regarding motion event descriptions may have to be reconsidered.</p>

Phrasal verbs are important for EFL and ESL education because of their high frequency, but can be difficult for learners because of their number and polysemy. While there are a number of studies on phrasal verbs, the widening focus of such studies has left a gap between theory and practical instruction. This study improves upon previous studies related to teaching phrasal verbs through cognitive linguistics by combining the theory of event conflation with corpus-based research to create a list of phrasal verb particles and meanings that is concise and yet comprehensive enough to account for approximately 95% of common phrasal verb meanings. It also reports the results of an experiment in which learners taught with this particle list improved more on pre-/post-tests of phrasal verbs than learners that studied a list of the most common phrasal verbs as whole entities (p&lt;0.001, d=1.34). Quantitative and qualitative data presented in this study also indicate that learners taught with the particle list improved their ability to conjecture the meanings of novel phrasal verbs more effectively than learners who studied common phrasal verbs as whole units.

This study investigated how multimodal video materials, designed to facilitate the learning of idiomatic expressions through the repetition of sentences containing target items, impact the pronunciation accuracy and speech rate of Japanese EFL learners while they are reproducing the expressions orally. We found that learners improved at both aspects, but that pronunciation accuracy improved more. Responses to an open-ended survey question indicated that participants generally had positive attitudes toward the materials. Participants with positive feelings often left comments about idiom learning and retention, while those with negative attitudes often commented on fluency, which might be related to why speech rate improved less.

Summary writing can be challenging for Japanese EFL learners, who tend to have difficulty with over-copying from source texts, reaching appropriate lengths, and choosing information for inclusion. This study reports on three interventions taken in tandem in an academic writing class: note-taking, peer feedback, and automated feedback. The results suggest that combining these interventions into process-writing-based practice effectively enhanced students’ summary writing ability; text-length and content scores increased from a pre- to post-test and the amount of source text copying decreased. Furthermore, we found that students who had higher language ability and more of a tendency to over-copy initially were more likely to improve. Finally, students reported that they preferred the automated feedback and the greatest change in learners’ writing was observed after the automated feedback, so we think that plays an important role in improving summary writing ability. Abstract In order to solve the problem of teachers not assigning and evaluating student writingbut not completely trusting AI raters, I created and tested a rating scheme in which an AImodel would rate students’ language use based on understandable criteria and humanswould quickly check the AI responses while rating content and structure. Teachers triedthe scheme and improvements were made based on new data and newly availableresearch. An online practice tool was also created for students so that they couldunderstand how the AI would rate their language use and practice accordingly. The AIrating models were improved over the course of three semesters based on student dataand the ratings of external professional raters. As a result, an increasing number ofteachers used the rating scheme, the number of students that practiced writing and wereevaluated increased university-wide, and reasonable levels of fairness assessment weremaintained.

In this research project, I observed the effects of project-based language learning (PBLL) on EFL students’ oral abilities. Specifically, I verified that PBLL generally leads to increases in students’ spoken accuracy and complexity, but less often in their fluency. Furthermore, I analyzed what factors were associated with greater increases in oral ability and found that students who more actively participated in class tended to increase spoken fluency, whereas students who properly studied vocabulary and prepared for classes tended to increase spoken complexity. Furthermore, students who took active speaking roles in their projects tended to increase their spoken accuracy and complexity. Finally, I discovered that instructor-based scores of in-class participation were more associated with increases in fluency, whereas student-based teamwork scores were more associated with initial fluency.

Recent advances in cognitive linguistics has suggested that the expressions of motion and change events in Japanese and English are created from different focal points. Second Language Acquisition research has suggested that this difference makes it difficult for Japanese EFL learners to create these expressions in English in a typical fashion. This research builds off of these previous studies and the discovery that many phrasal verbs in English are in fact expressions of motion and change, and created a new way of teaching phrasal verbs to Japanese EFL learners. These new teaching methods were tested and it was found that students who studied using these methods felt that it was easier to study phrasal verbs, and they showed more improvement in phrasal verb knowledge than students who were taught phrasal verbs through conventional methods.
