This research program empirically and theoretically investigated whether Japanese firms changed their modes of human capital accumulation in the environment of low growth and fluid labor markets emerging after the burst of economic bubbles in the 1990s. It has been demonstrated that the income and wealth inequalities between the workers who are given the training opportunities to accumulate human capital and those who are not given are likely to become severe, as the training opportunities are given to a relatively small number of workers, although the firms prioritize human capital investment over other investment activities such as R&D and fixed investment. To redress these inequalities, the government should increase the training opportunities through employment subsidies and/or transfer incomes from the worker who are given the training opportunities to those who are not.

We examined empirically and theoretically the causes of the poor performance of the Japanese economy after 1990s, with a special reference to some “long-term relation-based transactions” that have characterized the economy. In response to the economic environment that changed in the latter half of 1980s, Japanese firms attempted to switch some part of their transactions from the conventional relation-based ones to the market-based ones. However, our empirical researches found that this transition to the market-based transactions was limited, and thus that the Japanese economy was still based on the relation-based transactions such as lifelong employment and loans to affiliates. We also constructed some models that can explain this robustness of the relation-based transactions.

It is widely known that, through the ' 90s and beyond, the Phillips curve observed in Japan had become flatter than before. We examined both empirically and theoretically how the shape of Phillips curve is affected by microstructure of labor markets characterized by bargaining power of labor unions, unemployment insurance generosity, firing difficulty, easiness of turnover and so on, and found that an increased proportion of non-permanent employees can most successfully account for its flattening.

The purpose of this research is to verify the effect of Japanese defined contribution pension plan introduction from the viewpoint of the household sector, the business enterprise sector, and macroeconomics. 1. The first research explores the implications of possible bankruptcies of firms for their own wage schemes and the structure of labor market, using a two-period general equilibrium model. As a result, a substantial utility differential emerges between those who have luckily found a job of the primary market and those who have not, although there is no difference in their innate abilities. 2. We have obtained the list of 93 enterprise companies in which the article on 401k pension introduction in the new paper. The stock prices data before and after the newspaper publishing was acquired, and the news of 401k pension introduction how stock prices, corporate value, changed the event was studied. As a result, we could not confirm the effect of introducing the DC plan on raising stock prices. 3. The effect of the DC pension system in Japan on the households, savings was tested by using the data of "Family Budget Survey" from 2002 to 2006. As a result, the possibility of increasing the amount of the pension property was shown in the group of high-income working households. In addition, the possibility that the revision of the contribution limit invades aggregate savings is shown among high-income households. In each case, the effect that the DC pension system increased the pension type savings and aggregate savings of low-income households was not able to be confirmed.
