    To discuss the supercooled liquid state on complex fluids like water, we perform generalized replica exchange method (gREM) computer simulations on model glass formers, 12-6 polydisperse Lennard-Jones system with a Gaussian size polydispersity at constant pressure. We obtain the preliminary gas-liquid-crystal-glass phase diagram of polydisperse LJ systems on temperature- size polydispersity plane at constant pressure not only between the triple point and the critical point, but also above the critical point. The gREM was created to study first order transitions. This simulation resutls suggest that it is a powerful algorithm for phase equilibrium on complex fluids in general.

    Analyzing the characteristic features seen in various glass-forming liquids near the glass transition from a unified point of view based on the mean-field theory recently proposed by the present researcher, Tokuyama found the following important two types of universalities : (1) If the self-diffusion coefficients of different atoms in two different systems have the same value, the dynamics of each atom obeys the same master equation. (2) The self-diffusion coefficient of atom obeys a master equation, even if it belongs to different multi-component liquids.

    We have studied the colloidal glass transitions not only by constructing the theory but also by performing the extensive computer simulations and obtained the following important achievements. 1)In order to clarify how the hydrodynamic interactions between colloids play an important role near the glass transition, we have performed two types of computer simulations on the systems of hard spheres, the Brownian-dynamics simulation and the molecular-dynamics simulation. By analyzing the data from a unified point of view based on the mean-field theory proposed recently by Tokuyama, we have thus first shown that the glass transition can not occur without the hydrodynamic interactions. 2)We have numerically solved the nonlinear stochastic diffusion equation for the density fluctuations derived in 2001 by Tokuyama from a first principle and then shown that the long-lived spatial heterogeneities caused by the nonlinear density fluctuations near the glass transition are an important origin of a famous two-step relaxation. 3)Tokuyama has proposed the mean-field theory by deriving the nonlinear equation for the mean-square displacement from the nonlinear stochastic diffusion equation. It has been shown to be applicable not only for colloidal suspensions but also for glass-forming materials by analyzing several different experimental and simulation data. The theory thus predicts remarkable similarities between different glass transitions and proposes an approach quite different from the conventional ones to understand the glass transition, including a logarithmic decay and no divergence of any characteristic times.

  7. The dynamics of suspensions of magnetic colloidal chains confined in thin films

    The extensive Brownian dynamics simulations are performed on the suspensions of magnetic colloidal chains confined in thin films under the external magnetic field. The phase behabior is discussed as a function of the control parameter, such as a chain length, an area fraction of chains, and a strength of the magnetic field. The mean-square displacement, the radial distribution functions, and the bond-orientational function are fully investigated. The simulation results are analysed based on the mean-field theory proposed recently by Tokuyama [Physica A, vol.364, pp.23-64(2006), vol.378, pp.157-166(2007)]. The dynamics of chains and the spatial structure are then shown to exhibit similar behavior, irrespectively of a chain length.
