    More details Close

Ion‐endohedral‐fullerene has attracted growing interest due to the unique electronic and structural characteristics arising from its distinctive ionic nature. Although there has been only one reported ion‐encapsulated fullerene, Li+@C60, a significant number of fundamental and applied studies have been conducted, making a substantial impact not only in chemistry and physics but also across various interdisciplinary research fields. Nevertheless, studies on ion‐endohedral fullerenes are still in their infancy due to the limitations in variety, and hence, it remains an open question how the size and symmetry of fullerene, as well as the motion and position of the encapsulated ion, affect their physical/chemical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of lithium‐ion‐endohedral [70]fullerene (Li+@C70 X−, X=PF6− and TFSI−), a novel ionic endohedral fullerene. X‐ray crystallography confirmed the encapsulation of Li+ by C70 cage as well as its ion‐pair structure stabilized by external TFSI− counter anion. The encapsulated Li+ drastically lowered the orbital energy of the C70 cage by Coulomb interactions but did not affect the orbital energy gap and degeneracy. DFT studies were also performed, which supported the experimentally observed electronic effects caused by the encapsulated Li+.

Hot-mesh CVD with various gas supply modes for the epitaxial growth of gallium nitride (GaN) on Si was investigated for the improvement of its crystallinity and optical properties. The optimal interruption time in an intermittent TMG gas supply was also investigated. As a result, the good crystallinity of GaN films was obtained by an intermittent gas supply of TMG and a continuous supply of NH_3 gas. The best crystallinity was obtained at an interruption time of 8s.

In this article [Y. Miyamoto, et al., e-J. Surf. Sci. Nanotech. 7, 107 (2009)], we discussed formation of graphene on Si substrates assuming that the pre-grown 3C-SiC films on the Si(110) substrate are (111)-oriented. Later investigations suggest, however, that the 3C-SiC films used in this study are dominated by (110)- oriented portion, with the (111)-orientation being the minority. The comments on the (111)-orientation of the 3C-SiC films should therefore be omitted. This revision, however, does not affect our observation of graphene formation on Si substrates and the analyses thereon.[DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2009.699]

Gallium nitride (GaN) is wide-bandgap compound semiconductor, which is useful for optoelectronic devices operating in short wavelength and at high temperatures. In our previous study, hot-mesh CVD method using heated tungsten (W) with a mesh structure was investigated for the growth of hexagonal GaN on AlN/SiC/Si substrates. The GaN films grown at the hot-mesh temperature of 1200℃ showed good crystallinity and a strong near-band-edge emission. In order to lower the mesh temperature during the growth, the GaN films on AlN/SiC/Si substrates using Ru-coated W hot-mesh was investigated. By using the Ru-coated W hot mesh, the crystallinity and the PL spectrum of GaN films growth of lower than 1100℃ were further improved.

With its industrial adaptability, epitaxial graphene, a graphene film formed by UHV annealing of SiC bulk substrates, is attracting recent attention. Still, a growth technique that allows formation of graphene films on Si substrates is strongly demanded when we want to utilize graphene as a post-CMOS material. To this goal, we have developed a growth technique of graphene on Si substrates by using an epitaxial film of 3C-SiC formed by organosilane gas-source MBE and its subsequent surface modification.

Intermittent gas supplies in hot-mesh CVD for the epitaxial growth of gallium nitride (GaN) were investigated for the improvement of its crystallinity and optical properties. Pulse heating of the Ru coated W-mesh during the hot-mesh CVD was also tried for the enhancement of the high-density NHx supply. As a result, the good crystallinity of GaN films was obtained by intermittent gas supply of TMG and a continuous supply of NH_3 gas compared with other intermittent gas supplies. The pulse heating of W-mesh did not result in the improvement of the film quality of GaN.

The aim of this research project is to create a highly amorphized material using soft chemistry method and develop new electrode material group for Na-ion battery. We synthesized highly amorphous Si and Ge oxide powders by soft chemistry method. However, only the amorphous Ge oxide powder showed the electrochemical performance for the Na-ion battery. In the soft chemical synthesis, fine particles of several microns was observed by using 2-propanol, a secondary alcohol, as the alcohol species for oxidizing Zintle phase NaM. Using an ether solvent for the Na-ion battery electrolyte solution, the electrochemical performances of the amorphous Ge oxide material were greatly improved.

The electrochemical reaction for battery is elucidated from the spectroscopic viewpoint. The battery quality depends on the solvation or desolvation of activated ion at the high energy interface between electrodes and electrolytes. However, the details about the electrochemical reaction have not been clarified yet. In this study, the vibrational spectroscopic technique of the Raman spectroscopy has been carried out for the battery active materials. Obtained results give big knowledge to the development of the battery industry which needs rapid charging and discharging of lithium ion battery for electric vehicle.

In electrochemistry, it is often necessary to conduct both experimental and theoretical investigations, including analysis of the standard electrode potential, the electric double layer, the diffusion layer, the diffusion coefficient of the ion, and thermodynamic parameters. Spectroscopy has progressed remarkably in the last three decades. Advances in spectroscopic analysis have been driven primarily by the need to clarify how surface physical chemistry, such as catalysis and corrosion, are involved in chemical reactions. The present study investigates the behavior of water molecules on the surface of a Ag electrode by Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroelectrochemistry and focuses on the dynamical changes in the Raman spectra of water libration at the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte solution at various electrode potentials in alkali hydroxide aqueous solutions.

We investigated the properties of lithium ion capacitors (LICs) using highly crystalline single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films with carboxyl groups as an anode. The decrease of the capacity of LICs was suppressed at a high rate, and also the decrease of the capacitance and the increase of the internal resistance were suppressed at overcharging voltages. If the capacitance of SWCNTs is large, we can fabricate a high performance LICs. In contrast, the properties of the LICs decrease at over-discharging voltages. In the future, we need to clarify phenomena caused in SWCNT electrodes in over-discharging. We synthesized ethylenediaminated SWCNTs (EDA-SWCNTs) from fluorinated SWCNTs and investigated the properties of electric double-layer supercapacitors (EDLSCs) with EDA-SWCNTs as electrodes. Free-standing EDA-SWCNT electrodes for EDLSCs are effective as electrodes and improve the properties of EDLSCs in comparison to binder-free COOH-SWCNT electrodes.

Research plan was founded on the basic research to develop techniques to synthesize highly crystalline nanomaterials for energy and environmental related applications. We synthesized highly pure copper oxides(CuO、Cu2O)nanoparticles for photoelectric conversion and confirmed their semi-conductor properties. We also constructed Cu2O:C60solar cells and evaluated their photo efficiency. We also developed techniques to synthesize Fe-Pt and Ni-Pt nanoparticles as catalytic electrodes for fuel cells. We demonstrated that Fe-Pt nanoparticles with fct crystalline structure on activated carbon could be used as an alternative candidate for Pt in PEFCs. Furthermore, Ni95Pt5and Ni90Pt10performed comparably with Pt particles in hydrogenation reaction, in spite of low Pt concentration. Finally, we also developed techniques to synthesize Fe-Co and Fe-Ni particles as electromagnetic wave absorbers and antenna material, respectively, and measured their high frequency properties. Fe-Co exhibited particle size dependent resonance peak in the range of a few GHz. On the other hand, Fe?Ni alloy nanoparticles, synthesized by hydrazine assisted polyol process, exhibited shape dependent low magnetic lossinthe MHz region.

Nanoparticles in 1 nm dimension consisting of tens to thousands of atoms exhibit materials properties sensitively dependent on the number of constituent atoms, in contrast to those over a few nm which are regarded essentially as the bulk. This project investigates two or three dimensional networks of these ultra-small nanoparticles inducing detection, conduction, decomposition, transformation, storage of electrons, atoms, molecules and ions. The research is divided into 1.synthesis of ultra-small particles of high functionalities, 2.linking them into networks, and 3.evaluating their device characteristics. The special attention was focused on producing the smallest particles of practically useful II-VI semiconducting compounds, succeeding in finding atomically precise and perfectly monosized 1 nm particles of (CdSe)_n. The number of constituent atoms is less than a hundred and is small enough that the particle behaves like a molecule to be linked or assembled under atomic scale and precision. They exhibit functional devices realized by and based on the properties arising from special atomic arrangements not achieved by bulk crystalline structures, leading to a new approach in nanometer science and technology. Ultra-small particles of (CdSe)_n were synthesized with n= 13,34,48,60.... Such small particles exhibit their stabilities extremely sensitive to the number of constituent atoms, n, so as to be selectively grown only at these n's. Networks with these particles were produced not only by simple array formation but also by their liking with organic polymers to form two and three dimensional arrangements. These 1nm particles are further functionalized by surface modification with such as trioctylphosphine (TOP) to yield extremely high luminescence efficiency comparable to rhodamines of commercial organic dyes. These functionalities are realized by our atomically precise synthesis and characterization made possible because of their molecular nature, proven as a desirable approach in the nanoscience and technology.

Electrochemical measurement system for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs) has been constructed by developing in-situ and ex-situ electrochemical techniques. Thus far, cell performances of PEMFCs have been evaluated by I-V characteristics of the single cell. The present study has succeeded to establish fundamental methods to measure each material used in the cell properly under the cell-operation environments. Main research results are summarized as follows. First, by developing novel porous-microdisc electrode and porous-microring electrode, electrochemical properties of powder catalyst alone and catalyst/PEM layered structure have been estimated. Second, precise proton conductivity of PEM in thickness direction has become available by employing a set of microelectrodes. When the measured conductivity was compared with that assessed by the current interruption technique, the magnitudes of proton conductivities were well agreed. Third, a new method for alcohol crossover evaluation at a PEM has been attained, utilizing a microdisc electrode based on its micro-positioning feature. This enabled a quantitative crossover analysis at the PEM. Next, redox mechanism of an aromatic alcohol as a new fuel candidate has been investigated according to a spectroelectrochemistry measurement. Finally, ionic conductivity of polymer electrolyte membrane has been resolved employing an interdigitated microarray electrode by changing a water : methanol mixture ratio, which is worthwhile for operating the direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC). In conclusion, by designing in-situ/ex-situ electrochemical measurement system to evaluate the functional materials in the PEMFC, electrochemical study for the materials and the cell systems have been greatly improved.

Electrochemical measurement system for polymer electrolyte membrane/electrocatalyst layered structure, where the three-electrode system was difficult to apply so far, has been constructed by creating a series of ultramicroelectrodes. The system successfully enabled us to evaluate the interfacial electrochemical reaction based on a small-current-induced small iR drop even in the high resistivity medium. In addition, microarray electrode revealed a reaction mechanism of the electrocatalytic process. Consequently, electrochemical measurement system for polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) has been developed. Main research results are summarized as follows. First, an integrated ultramicroelectrode has been fabricated which involves working, counter and reference microelectrodes at a tip of a glass capillary. By using this, the gas phase electrochemical reactions were measured for hydrogen and methanol oxidation. Second, ionic conductivity of polymer electrolyte membrane has been measured employing an interdigitated microarray electrode by changing a water:methanol mixture ratio. Which is worthwhile for an operation of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Third, by utilizing the interdigitated microarray electrode, methanol oxidation intermediate, which could not recorded at a conventional rotating ring-disk electrode, has been detected for the first time. Next, a porous microelectrode has been made which has a microcavity at the tip to measure electrochemical properties of particulate materials. This allowed a conventional evaluation of electrocatalysts in a powder form. Finally, a porous microring electrode, which has polymer electrolyte/electrocatalyst layered structure at the tip, has been created for a purpose to appraise a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrochemically. In conclusion. By designing and fabricating novel ultramicroelectrodes, electrochemical characterization for polymer electrolyte membrane/electrocatalyst structure has been greatly progressed.

励起波長を514.5nm(2.48eV)から647.1nm(1.97eV)とすると,格子振動に起因するラマン線の散乱強度が減少した.

The present research project has aimed development of new materials for the lithium-ion secondary battery, which is applicable to electric vehicles, based on two novel techniques, one being the citrate precursor method for material preparation and the other a microelectrode technique for electrochemical characterization of powdered battery materials. (1) Under collaboration, Yamagata group obtained lithium nickelate and spinel-related lithium manganese oxides with good cyclability by the modified citrate method, which enabled us to prepare systematically the multi-components oxides with micro-level tailoring and atomic-level homogeneity. (2) Tohoku group has developed microelectrode techniques which are very versatile in electrochemical characterization and rapid searching tailored samples even in a small quantity of micro-meter size particles. In-situ observation of particle splitting due to the mechanical instability accompanied by the insertion/extraction of lithium ions, high potential (〜5V) voltammetry to examine the electrochemical stability of the particle in organic solutions, determination of diffusion coefficients of lithium ions in the solid phase by AC and potential step method, and in-situ Raman spectroscopy and in-situ conductivity measurements during insertion of lithium ions with micro-array electrode technique also have been carried. Data thus obtained were feedbacked to the partners and effectively utilized in further R&D.
